I have an Ironwolf 4tb in my regular home pc. I choose Ironwolf because it's said to have better reliability than the Barracuda drives. It's not an Ironwolf Pro, but a "regular" Ironwolf. I've read that it's primarly meant to put into a NAS with a RAID controller. Now I have stumbled across an old forum thread from Quora stating that harddrives made for NAS are lacking some built-in features that "regular" harddrives have when it comes to handle suspicious sectors. A regular harddrive would try to read the suspicious sector several times and if successfull reading it will relocate the data to a spare sector, then mark the suspicious sector as perhaps a bad sector or current pending sector. However a NAS harddrive would lack this feature and if it finds a suspicious sector it will directly mark it as bad and not try to retrieve any data there. For that you need the NAS drive in a RAID controller. Now I know how much weird and false info are circulating around the net. But I don't know enough about NAS drives if this is true, and I don't know if my Ironwolf 4tb (ST4000VN006-3CW104) is considired as a NAS drive or just a high-end regular harddrive. I did chat with Seagate's live agents support service but I didn't get a clear answer really... Can anyone of you give a correct answer? For those recommending me to replace it with an SSD instead: Yes I will eventually, whenever I can afford it. The larger SSDs are still much more expensive than harddrives so I'll have to wait until I can. And yes I do make backups of my important stuff. I got my Ironwolf in october last year and so far no errors reported yet.

So I need a drive for backup, for now I only do manual copy and paste every 2-4 weeks. Then I will let BackBlaze handles off-site back up to complete my 3-2-1. Currently, I have data in 2x 4TB drives. One is a WD external (from BackBlaze) and one is a Seagate Barracuda Desktop (from shady source and failing...) The 4TB drives are filling up with 150GB left, so I need a new backup drive. I plan to use the New 8TB hard drive as primary back up. Continue using the WD external drive as partial secondary back up for most important files (40-50% of total). the failing Barracuda will hold on to movies/Disk images/etc. files not that important (50-60% of total). The New drive potentially may become part of a NAS.. I don't foresee the drives been filled by then. Heck I am not even sure about turning it into a NAS... So I have my eyes on several 8TB NAS drive with buying 2x 4TB drives as alternative, the price are the best from reputably sources I can find in my area. The candidates are (They are all on sale, which I denoted, price are sales price, not original): Toshiba N300 8TB HDWG480UZSVA @ 1799 sek (-15% sale) 2x Seagate IronWolf 4TB ST4000VN008 @ 979 each (Total 1858 sek) (+3% N300 Price) (-10% sale) Seagate IronWolf 8TB ST8000VN004 @ 2349 sek (+30% N300 Price) (-10% sale) WD Red Plus 8TB WD80EFBX @ 2190 sek (+22% N300 Price) (-18% sale) My motherboard can support 1 more drive and I do have a 2 bay external dock, so choosing the 2x4TB option is feasible. I am wondering should I go with one of the 8TB drive or go with the 2 wolves. If I go with 8TB drives, which one? My concerns are : 1. If I go with 2x4TB, I will likely have one IronWolf back up Barracuda (on once a month), and other Ironwolf back up WD external drive (Every 2 weeks), but this may cause one drive worn out a bit more. will it be a bad thing? I already have a 1TB dive sitting around and used as Windows backup drive). Plus if I want to turn the drives into a NAS I might need to look into a 4-bay NAS instead say a 2-bay NAS. 2. Toshiba N300's price is really attractive, given their datasheet is very similar to Seagate IronWolf and WD Red Plus.(Warranty, MTBF, Power-On-Hours Rating, Max # of drives per bay etc.). But I don't think Toshiba is as popular as WD or Seagate... Speaking of which WD had that CMR/SMR fiasco... I am wondering if I should be better off stick with Seagate IronWolf (Yes I am a bit bias'd towards Seagate, most of my drives are Seagate...). * I didn't do too much research on software features. But I heard IronWolf have a management software for failure prediction.

Here's what I need to do here. I use a program called Hard Disk Sentinel, and I have the pro version. This allows me to read the drive status of NASes, if you can get them to output a file. I recently setup a Synology DS418, and I would like to get it setup to output the smartctl results of all 4 drives into one textfile into "volume1/HDSentinel". I have 4 Seagate Ironwolf 10TB drives inside it. I tried to do it by myself, but the whole linux command structure is Greek to me. Here's what I was able to make: Can anyone help? It'd be sweet if I could monitor the drives from within HDSentinel. Hey, all... frustrated here. I cannot mount my new Ironwolf 10TB HDD. The motherboard (MSI Z270 variant) is showing it in the SATA1 slot. The OS (Linux MInt 18.3) is showing it in the Drive file, along with my M.2. However, it will not Mount. I have tried sudo mount, using Gnome Disk utilities, and physically swapping cables and SATA ports. It just will not mount. Please help.
