Ok, so I was thinking about buying some more hard drives. Now I know I sound crazy for wanting a bunch of hard drives, but I think with the money it could be a good idea. So if I bought a 200gb ssd nvme m.2 hard drive for only windows 10, then bought another ssd nvme m.2 but with 1tb for video games. Would separating the things in my pc like this improve performance? Currently I have a hdd hard drive with 2tb for only videos, pictures, and of course minecraft mods. I also have a 1tb hard drive that I'm currently using for my video games and windows 10. If I reinstalled windows onto the 200gb ssd, reinstalled my video games on a 1tb ssd, and used the previous 1th hdd for just vr games; would separating everything improve performance? I do think doing this would definitely give my data a less of a chance for corrupting and losing everything. In the future I may even get another hdd or ssd for Linux. (btw I have 6 sata ports on my motherboard.) Could this possibly even slow down the pc since it's searching through multiple hard drives constantly?

Hi guys, I recently bought a SanDisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD which I will be using for fast file sharing and some sensitive data storage. I need to encrypt some specific folders on this drive. Since this drive will be used on Android (extensively I might add). I need some solution which allow me to access or encrypt / decrypt the folder(s) on both PC and Android. All the solutions I have looked at have been either Android or PC but I need a solution which allows me to have access/encryption/decryption rights for both Android and PC. Thanks in advance. Excited to a part of this community going forward

I'm pretty much new to the NAS world and am currently planning a TrueNAS ZFS NAS build. I was wondering if there is a way to use a large SSD Pool for fast Data writes, that automatically - after a period of time - sends the Data to an HDD Pool for long term storage and after completion empties the SSD Pool for reusing. Thinking of this, as ZFS caching does not speed up the Data writes.

My empty 1tb became 250gb when I used a cloning software to move my files from my (C:)250gb to (:D:)1tb. Can my 1tb drive be recovered from having only 250gb?

Hi, I have a Asus ROG STRIX Z390-F motherboard and a Samsung 970 nvme m.2 drive and I installed it on socket 1 on my mobo it isn't covered with a heat sink because I lost the stand-offs for the heat sink one and installed windows on the drive and am using it in that socket but I found the stand-offs and want to move the drive to the socket with the heat sink but will that damage or corrupt the data on the drive or confused the computer or will it be safe and easy to do? Thanks,

Hey LTT, Let me start by saying the some of the problems I've been having have been occurring for almost a year. Do I Think They are all related? No, but I do think my SSD is part of the issue. (Note: SSD only holds OS, and a couple games I play on steam.) I'm not here to tell you what I think though, I'm here to hear what you guys think and to seek help to fix my problems. Problems that have been occurring for about a year When booting PC, it will get stuck on motherboard screen. If I hit the restart button it will restart just fine and go to login screen. (once in about a month it will boot without needing to hit the restart button). Sometimes the PC will freeze, requiring me to "hard kill" it (by holding down power button). Sometimes after doing this, the PC will power back up as if there is a little ghost in my room playing games with me. Recent occurring problems Programs have start to not respond, more often than they should. Notifications from action center don't go away till restart. No longer can open action center Now with the info gave, what are somethings I can do to get to the bottom of this? Thanks for the help that will be coming my way shortly. If I left anything important out please let me know.

I have a bunch of Smart 32Gb SSDs ( around 5 of them) lying around here, and I want to do something with them. Is there some project or any crazy stuff that could be fun ou useful to do with them? Please give me your thoughts and/or ideas!

Hey everyone I'm having trouble downloading games off of steam after i did a complete restart on my pc. Only seems to happen on steam from what i can tell as have downloaded other things like autocad and heaven bench mark. I've done a disk check on both of my drives and downloaded seatool to test my hdd. SDD is a Samsung 840 EVO Series 120GB SSD HDD is a Seagate Barracuda 3TB ST3000DM001 have 80gb space on sdd and 2.7 TB on hdd. Anyone have a problem like this before or know of anything else i could do in either tests or needing to format drives? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hello there everyone. i'm new here so yay. ok im here cusim having a few problems and they might be too obvious but i want to know if there is another way. anyways, just got a 120gb ssd. i have a 1tb hdd and my everything is there but what i want to do is move the operating system from the hdd to the ssd. i went to MyPc and went to properties for the C: drive and i see that there is 558gb used space. to my assumption, thats a little to much to move from the hdd to ssd. all i want to do tho is move the operating system from the hdd to the ssd. please, what something i have to do to accomplish this. ive cloned a whole hdd to a new hdd but never had to migrate the OS from a 1tb hdd to a much smaller SSD. please if someone doesnt mind helping me out with my little problem. please and thank yous.

I have a Lenovo Idealpad 110 (https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-100-series/Lenovo-IdeaPad-110-17IKB/p/88IP1000780) with only the HHD drive of 500Gb, and I want and SSD but the laptop don't have a m.2 slot and I don't want to lose the 500Gb of storatge that I already have. Thas why I thought to buy one adapter (like these: Link on Amazon) to use an SSD 2.5'' instead of the optical drive. I don't quite know if it's compatible with my laptop or if is somewhere a good idea. Would be a good way to have both drives? Wich model should I buy? Thanks for the help.

I bit the bullet and decided to upgrade my system with an ASUS X299-Deluxe Motherboard and i7-7820X CPU. However, I am unable to detect any hard drives in BIOS! I can confirm that these are working drives and cables because I tested it with the old motherboard afterwards. I've used the old system to reformat the HDDs and SSDs to GPT and MBR, cleaned the drive with diskpart, and made sure the drives were listed as Primary and not Logical. I've also upgraded my BIOS firmware to the latest version. Any help or tips to get my new motherboard to detect my hard drives would be appreciated!

So, you want to speed up that old OEM system in your parent's den, well I have some tips for you. I have 24-years of experience in not having money to get decent performance. I've tried(or thought about trying) of Everything under the sun and I'm here to share 3 steps Sandisk and Adata don't want you to know. 1. Short Stroking: reducing your drive space may seem like a detriment, but since you are probably going to kill yourself before filling up that 5,400rpm drive, it's better to choose more speed. 2. R.A.I.D.: Godsent for older drives, everyone got em, no one wants em, and you can stripe 2 or 3 for double the money(considering you bought shit hard drives, that's like $3.50) 3. Combine: That's right, you just made a glass cannon build of using old hard drives in a non-recoverable array, enjoy 75% of the performance of an SSD(bottlenecked by sata 2) for a fraction of the costs and 300% the noise! Note: Linus should 100% make a video testing this BEAST of a rig and see if its worth doing! I mean they have to make a video everyday so this shit would be better than fucking "anti-RGB" build.

Hello, My wife's Macbook Air mid 2013 storage has been playing out a bit and its internal capacity is a complete joke. Browsing online for m.2 I've cornered myself with a set of new terms I'm unfamiliar with and I might need a bit of help. Browsing newegg, I found a few drives appealing such as the corsair force MP300 (Corsair Force MP300 M.2 2280 480GB PCI-Express 3.0 x2, NVME 1.3 3D) or the Samsung 970 evo (SAMSUNG 970 EVO M.2 2280 500GB PCIe Gen 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.3 V-NAND 3-bit MLC) which can be fitted to the macbook air via an adapter... Incidentally, this adapter indicates it does not support pci-express x2 or x4 transfer mode and it only supports NGFF (or SATA) (https://www.newegg.com/global/au-en/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6V86JM5118&Description=m.2 adapter apple&cm_re=m.2_adapter_apple-_-9SIA6V86JM5118-_-Product)... At this point, I was a bit confused and dug out a bit more trying to understand what the actual difference between nvme and ngff... ended up more confused. Could anybody elaborate a bit more? I was trying to find a linus tech video explaining all the different nvme/ngff variations and which one could be mixed with what... but no luck. I understand nvme is a different spec capable of extremely high speeds in comparison to sata iii, and I imagine the bus on the macbook air is set to be sata iii as opposed to nvme in full... Do they use the same m.2 port to indicate these two are compatible (rendering the nvme drive slower maxing out at the same speed as the sata iii drive)? or will it be completely incompatible? Just in case, the reason why I liked the corsair drive is: 1. the spec indicates it is meant to run cooler. 2. its average power consumption is lower than the samsung 970 500gb I was looking and to be honest, this will just extend the operating usage of her computer as she does not want a new computer (and doesn't want any of the new macbook air)

I am having computer problems, can someone help? So I bought a new SSD yesterday and it came today but when I copied my old SSD on to this it only had a 120gb partition but there was still 120gb unallocated. In disk management, if I right click on the main partition and click extend to add the other 120gb it won't let me do anything. any fixes? Thanks, Will

so i have a question around cloning my HDD to a new SSD using Acronis. . i bought a crucial mx500 500GB SSD and it comes with acronis software so i was going to use that and clone the drive. but i was reading something that said you can't use clone option if drives have different sector sizes. the crucial drive has 4096 physical sector size, and my mechanical drive is a Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM006 and when i check system information in windows and check the disk section the bytes/sector field shows as 512. can someone explain if this means clone is not an option. ? when i check the specs of my HDD online it says physical sectors are 4096 so i am assuming what i see in windows is the logical size and i will be ok to clone. ?

TL;DR Need a cheap and reliable PCI-E 1X Sata3 Controller and no need for raid... I'm looking for a decent PCI-E 1X Sata3 controller for an old rig that only has Sata2 onboard... I need something reliable but not too pricey and don't need raid.. It's for an old gaming rig I dug up for my 10y/o niece when she moved in with me. It has a C2Q Q9550, 8Gb DDR3 ram and a 4Gb GTX680 and runs most fairly recent games well (so long as they don't need SSE4.2). But the Sata2 controller seems to be a sticking point for games that stream a lot in from the HDD such as open world games like Fallout, Skyrim (non-SE) and GTA IV/EFLC. Frame rates are decent once and area is fully loaded but as you cross the map it stumbles quite a bit as things try loading in... Now I played Skyrim on this HDD and Video card before and it ran fine, And the CPU is better then I had back when that game was new so the only weak point I can see is the Sata2 interface. So I'm hoping an Sata3 interface and an SSD with help smooth it out
