Hi, I am looking forward to my first PC build and I would like to go with something cheap, suitable to get my hands on building a PC, overclocking and overall tinkering with the system. At a later point I will upgrade to modern age hardware. For now I plan to do some light to modest gaming on this first build. I found an old Xeon x5650 for around $100 and also DELL PRECISION T3500 with 12 gigs of ram for ~$240. I plan to put the x5650 in there, overclock it to 37-4.0 GHz, replace the PSU with Seasonic M12II-750 and throw in an rx480. I know the mobo only has PCI-E 2.0 and the rx480 is generally meant to be used on 3.0 slots, but it looks like a big part of the internet says that the performance difference in gaming is not that big between 3.0 and 2.0. I only play WoW anyways (I might try some other games as well now :D). Do you think this will work, what will I be giving up and what should I expect from this system? I plan to re-use the PSU and the graphics card in my next build. Note: One thing that worries me is that I have no idea whether the mobo that comes with the T3500 supports overclocking, so if anybody knows, pls share. Thanks

Linus, you told such a BS story to the 980 guy (nice acting btw) and he was so nice to you I would think it would be a good idea to send him a 1080ti as a gift. You know since you guys have about 35 of them and he helped you possibly win this seasons scrapyard wars performance wise.

So I took apart my old laptop for fun and to salvage some parts because why not right? (It had a hard drive issue that I fixed after I past the point of no return on the disassembly. yes I now regret it but oh well). As long as the socket is the same on the mobo it will work, right? Since I have a few of the pieces laying around why not try and build the rest for cheap? I have the CPU, soon a PSU, and an HDD. So I just need a MOBO, RAM(I'm thinking 8-12gb), CPU cooler. And maybe a GPU, and maybe a case. I would like to have the case as small as possible so I may build my own. Also I would like to have an SSD for windows if it fits in the budget. This pc would be used for very light gaming, web browsing, and streaming video (Netflix, YouTube, etc). My budget would ideally be below $200 USD. But I might be willing to do $250. (Budget is for the parts I do not have. CPU, PSU, HDD are $0. Also exclude OS from budget) here is what I was thinking: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/TheWeazel/saved/pZFpgs CPU: AMD A4-3300 2.5ghz Dual-core (have from laptop) Cooler: Arctic Alpine 64 GT 25.6 CFM MOBO: ECS A55F-M1 micro ATX FM1 RAM: Crucial 8gb (1x8gb) DDR3-1600 GPU: EVGA GeForce 8400 GS 1gb PSU: EVGA 500w 80+ Certified ATX (have from pc) HDD: WD 250gb (have from laptop) Case: Xion XON-350 BK ATX mid tower What does the internet think??? Any suggestions???? Thank you!

Dear Linus, I'm not the first to post this kind of message, which in all likelihood you'll never even know existed (I've never received a reply or acknowledgement from any actual heartfelt...post...to any person/channel/company/conglomerate and I'm not deluded, the chances of this reaching you yourself are equal to lottery ((even better 'like these 14 things and bend over' competition)) odds. Big fan. Again, not delusional, 1M+ views these days is fan-McEffing-tastic and I'm glad the business is looking likely to succeed. BUT (hate it, some actor said "Everything that precedes the word 'but' is horseshit") I don't even watch your content anymore as you've adopted the face reddening trend of making every clip title a crumby click bait title. I KNOW it's probably working in favour (favor) of hits/views/revenue, but I'm guessing (Ye) 'Ol Linus' promised to avoid that when it all beganified. So please, if it's not too financially damaging, go back to titles that just explain the content - rather than saying something like 'WE'VE BEEN GIVEN FIRST PREVIEW OF SOMETHING BEFORE ANYONE ELSE AS USUAL, BUT IS IT ANY GOOD...OR MAYBE IT'S PANTS FOR THE MONEY???!?!?!!?!?!!?!? WHEN IT OBVIOUSLY IS EITHER GOOD OR PANTS.....' The view from my tower is SPECTACULAR, but I am given no choice to say....you're better than that. Secondly, you having helped build my own baby over the years through advice and such, I personally think your next S.C Wars theme should be, how much/well/efficiently can you upgrade a LAPTOP for gaming...I'm after a new laptop so of course it's self indulgent, but hey, content bebay. Yours undoubtedlyunknowingly, Joseph PS. I'v asked you for a job like 5 times already, don't MAKE me ask another 200-300 times...speaking of which, how's your firewall? PPS. THAT'S NOT A THREAT AND I'M NOT A HACKER. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE DAYS WHEN YOU COULD TELL A JOKE.

So I need to cut a few things in my crappy dell case but need to know the name of this tool which he is using. Screenshot below. Thanks!

I can be in an episode of Scrapyard Wars now right? Lol Anyways, I was walking down a trail and decided to drop on by my local Salvation Army store just to search around and took a look in the electronics section. Staring at me on the ground was this black case and this nice looking front panel. Went over to it and saw the $40 USD price tag but I took a look inside and saw a GTX 460 was like damn.Opened up the side panel and saw a shit a load of dust but then I saw the Corsair Ram and CX 430 PSU. Just had to pick it up after that. Took it home and cleaned it up and tried to fix the cable management. I popped in a spare 500GB HDD, installed Windows 7 and everything seems to be working fine. Going to use this as a secondary rig for a little while and then maybe sell it to one of my friends who wanted to switch to PC Gaming or part it all out considering how rare LGA 1155 overclockable mobos are coming. Hi all, This Christmas I want give my family a decent computer. Our current computer is coming up on a decade( I'm talking Pentium dual-core y'all) and was an HP from Best Buy. This will be my first build so the pressure is on to perform. Now I went about it kinda back asswards by buying a 1080p Freesync Monitor( Asus VG248 144hz 1ms on sale) so why not run with it and start there. Here is a list of what i'm looking for: 1080p@60fps gaming performance Compact size like Mid tower or microATX (small desk) Upgradable to 4K in a couple years Graphic card with Freesync compatablity $400 - $650 USD budget RGB and tempered glass are not a priority At least 1 bay for DVD/Bluray drive (from the old system) If you could, please, along with parts lists can you share some in site on why you made those choices. Also I am not opposed to doing some digging for used hardware so any suggestions for sites or if anyone near the Dallas, Texas area has info on where to look locally that would be helpful. Thank you for your suggestions.

What Mics are they using in scrapyard wars when they're just walking around, or out of shot and the mic pics up just fine. I assume they're lavaliers, but, does anyone know the model/brand mics they are. The quality is so good. I want to price some out. I'd pay a pretty penny.

Venturing into the world of privately sold used computer parts for the first time (specifically cpu, mobo, ram.) And am wondering if there's any seasoned vets out there that would have any advice for me to help me not get ripped off.

Kind of a weird topic for the case modding section, but I don't know where else to post this, and seems to fall under "other mods". Please let me know if there's a more appropriate place to post. I'm trying to source a supply of used laptop hardware. My screen is pretty much on it's last legs, and I'm looking to just splice in a new panel. I don't know where I could get one though. I'm looking for a 17.3" 1080p display, preferably 100Hz or higher. Anyone know any online shops that deal in old hardware and used parts?

I bought a PC from a garage sale for $10. The guy said it was a gaming PC but, I wasn't getting my hopes up for too much. It actually turned out to be a pretty good machine. It has a 1st gen i7 950, It has an ASUS P6T6 WS REVOLUTION Workstation motherboard, 12 GB DDR3-1600 RAM. I put in my SSD and HDD into it. (It came with a 120GB SSD and a 500GB HDD but didn't include an OS) It has an HD 5750 which I overclocked to 850mhz. I can't tell what kind of case it is. It has both Thermaltake and Ibuypower logos on it. There is a sticker that says "Ibuypower I series 901" I looked this up and it just showed me a prebuilt core 2 duo pc. This case ins't bad but it feels old. I don't like that it doesn't have a cutout behind the motherboard to change the CPU cooler. But, it does already have a hyper 212 on it so I don't think cooling is much of an issue. It has a 1250 watt unbranded power supply that hasn't caught on fire yet, which is good. (I'm still keeping a fire extinguisher nearby) I would like to replace the Graphics card but I'm not sure what this CPU can handle. I was thinking of a gtx 1060 or something similar. Even something used would be fine if i could get it for a good price. I really don't want to spend more that 300$US. I am using one 1080p monitor. Here is a link to the user benchmark score for this pc. http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/10361380

Hey everyone! So i set out to build something to gift to my cousin for his birthday and tried to do my best with keeping performance somewhat high, but costs low. Had a spare Xeon w3550 i took out from the original Z400 build i did a long time ago (which got swapped with an x5687), so found me a deal on ebay for a complete Z400 system with a crappier CPU but 8gb ram, 250gb HDD, PSU, case, board, cooler, etc. Turns out you cant use the Z400 stock cooler without the backplate that you cant use if you transplant the system into another case, and the Deepcool Gammax 300 for $13 stepped in. However, if anyone builds in a Z400 as-is, then its a moot point. Threw in some other spare parts i had (128gb boot SSD, 500gb storage drive, LED strip, transplant case, a few extra ram sticks, 24pin/4pin extensions) but the basis of this build was the complete Z400 system for $100, a Xeon W3550 (like $7 on ebay), and a GTX 960 4gb ($100 local, used) and thats right about $200 and good to game! Furthermore, this socket/system can support six core CPUs like the w3680 (i7-980x) and w3690 (i7-990x) which are still very strong processors, but the caveat i found out is that using an unlocked processor even on a locked system like this, programs like intel XTU and Throttlestop can lightly OC those CPUs still! Ive read of some other folks hitting 4.0-4.2ghz with those, with the software overclocking those utilities provide. 6-cores at 4+ghz is nothing to scoff at, even if it was 1st gen era. Moving the Z400 board into a non-stock case though introduces some issues, the main ones being a sense pin on the yellow USB header needs to have a jumper placed on it (easy), the 5th pin on the CPU fan header needs to be grounded (also pretty easy, i just cut a spare front panel wire from a different case down to a single pin, stripped one end, placed it on the 5th pin, routed it out the back, and screwed the exposed ground wire into the chassis), and the rear fan header needs a PWM fan on it (easy, just install a PWM fan on the rear of the case and plug it in there). BIOS will throw a 1394 header error, but just go into BIOS and mark the 1394 header as 'hidden' and voila, boots without issue and not needing "to press F1 to boot" and you'd be hard pressed to find a difference in performance or function at this point. Also, the fastest stock CPU for this is the x5687 Xeon. 4c/8t, 3.6ghz base with 3.9ghz turbo. Cant OC like described above, but has plenty of grunt at stock speeds and there was no i7 counterpart to this one. This Xeon is faster than any i7 on the x58 platform stock. Pretty interesting! Check it out and lemme know what y'all think! also talk about this in vid form

I'm looking to build a first gen I7 theme PC with some parts I have laying around. I have an ASUS P6X58D-E, I7 960, and a 590 on the way. What recommendations would you give for a PSU, RAM, and Hard Drive/SSD, Case and Cooler? Looking for the parts to be fairly enthusiast grade for the era they would have been in. On the RAM I'm confused as Intel lists the max RAM speed as 1033; so does that mean that's the max speed I can use? For the case I would like something that looks like it was from around that time period as well. I'm looking to spend hopefully under $300 total for the rest of these parts. I know it's a little tight since I'll need a fairly large PSU if I ever get another 590, but any help would be appreciated to help me cut some corners and save a bit of money.
-
So I had some old parts laying around, and I decided to build a random computer out of it and I'm looking for suggestions for GPU's now. Currently I have an MSI P6N SLI Platinum Mobo with a Xeon x3320 CPU and 4GB of OCZ DDR2 800MHZ, and a GTX 460 1GB. So what I'm mainly needing is GPU suggestions. Should I got for another GTX 460 and SLI them, or go for another card and SLI them? I'm really wanting to do something SLI and preferably under $120 for both of the cards. Wanting older hardware as in pre 700 series from NVIDIA, but I would not be opposed for going AMD either. This is really just a kinda wacky and random build, so I'm not really concerned about total practicality. Just more of a top of the line for the era kinda thing. PSU is not an issue either as I will buy whatever is needed to power the GPU's since I know older parts suck up lots of power. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, does anybody think it would be interesting to see them try finding deals right now? And i don't mean for a mining rig, which i saw people talking about, i mean a regular gaming build, just do it in the current state of market. Did the already talk about it at some point?
-
Hello all, with the new mining series that Linus is working on, and the growing similarities between all the scrapyard wars, I want to throw the idea out their for a new scrapyard wars $1000 budget No new hardware Computers will mine on a cryptominer(both on the same one) and the winner would either be the one with the most profits or best ROI time (let me know which would be better in comments) All in all this would be an epic scrapyard wars and I really hope they make it. Let me know your thoughts bellow
-
So I have been waiting sense Nov. 4th for the next season of scrapyard wars. Does anyone have any idea who will be in it, what the budget is, and when it is happening? If no-one knows, Lets give some suggestions to Linus and his team.

So i bought a pc without gpu, with q6600 2.4Ghz, intel mobo, 2 gb of 400mhz ram I bump into loads of problems. Paid 60euros. I got some parts from my friend for free, a 9400gt gpu, and 7950gt, but it requires 6pin connector. Got some 533 ecc ram. (2x 1gb) when i put in the ram pc just beeps and nothing shows up on monitor, old ram works. ( i think i should take motherboard from a pc with my cpu socket from which i took the ram from. I put in 9400GT and fan is not spinning, i thought it would spin under load or smth... I touched it for test and heatsink was hot, so i put about 140mm corsair fan to keep it cool, it worked. then i spined the fan few times with my finger and it started spinning super fast, so i touched it again and it spins normally now. Windows doesnt detect the gpu, well im installing Nvidia GeForce experience and its stuck loading... I'll try to get a molex > PCIe adapter and run the other card. Any ideas how to upgrade my shitty rig???? now it runs very slow
