  1. So, I'm setting up an Ubuntu server that should host network storage for the rest of the house, where Linux and Windows machines exist. I've created a raidz pool and shared it using Samba, although I haven't messed with the Samba config file at all. Instead, I just added my user to Samba (smbpasswd -a <user>), and changed ownership in the root folder of the storage pool (with -R) to the group "sambashare". I changed permissions to 770, as everyone in "sambashare" should have full access, whereas anyone without authentication should have none. From windows, I connected to the shared folder using the password set on the server with smbpasswd and got access as expected. Then I proceeded to copy a bunch of files from the Windows PC to the samba share. It went fine, as far as I can see. The problem is, the folder I copied (I assume the files within as well) have "owner <user>, group <user>", not "sambashare", and therefore other users with permissions to the main folder cannot write inside the folder I copied. This is not intended behavior: inside the share it should be free for all for any authenticated user that's a member of sambashare. I can change ownership and permissions of those files after the fact, but that's clearly impractical. How should I configure either Linux's permissions or Samba so that anything added to the shared folder and its subfolders, especially when done from client computers, is by default available with full access to all members of "sambashare"?
  2. Long story short I'm trying to connect my 2009 Imac (MacOs 10.13.6) to my PopOs Samba share (Ubuntu 18.04) on my lenovo yoga book locally. I used this tutorial: https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/install-and-configure-samba#1-overview So everything appears to have gone as it said it should. I saw on my finder window under 'Shared' SAMBA24 which I recognized under the smb.conf so I tried connecting but it keeps giving me the "cannot connect to server maybe it doesn't exist or you typed in the ip wrong" blah blah blah. So I changed the name of the samba under smb.conf just to see what would happen and sure enough the name under 'Shared' in finder changed...but can't connect. I tried doing it manually by hitting >go>connect to server> and typing every version of smb://ip/ or smb://ip/sambashare that I could think of and nothing. It certainly isn't an issue of them seeing each other because of the name being able to change and my Popos laptop can access a samba share on my mac if I set it up....but that's not what I'm trying to do. Further more I have tried doing research on the smb.conf to see if there's anything I was supposed to mess with but besides interfaces and host allow nothing else would make sense to do (ontop of that I'm afraid attempting to mess with those has only made things worse). I need help to say the least. Could this be an issues of something I'm unaware of like PopOs having their own weird configuration that I just clashed with my set up or that this guide is out of date? Could it even be my mac? Please and thank you ahead of time that's really all the info I can give atm. Thank you in advance.
  3. Hi LTT forum. I have a problem with Samba on CentOS 8 that I have been unable to figure out over the past few days. I can see on Google that i'm not the only one with the problem, but haven't yet found a solution there work for me. I created a directory like many others with the same access and Samba setup, but for some reason I can't seem to get rid of a specific error, that make the content in that shared folder unavailable. Directory and Samba information drwxrwx---. 2 myuser mygroup 6 Mar 11 16:37 myfolder chcon -R -t samba_share_t /mnt/myshares (myfolder is in-side that directory) semanage fcontext -a -t samba_share_t "/mnt/myshares(/.*)?" 4. People are often intimidated by the idea of setting up a server using nothing but a CLI (Command-line Interface) but it's not as difficult as you might think. For the most basic setup there's not very much to it. What I'm going to be using for this example: Debian Linux - Ubuntu Server 19.04 File System - ZFS (software RAID) SAMBA - CIFS/SMB (for Windows clients) SSH/SFTP (for remote clients) Index 1. Preparing the Installer 2. Installing the OS 3. Installing Programs & Drivers 4. Configuring ZFS (zfsutils-linux) 5. Configuring SMB/CIFS (samba) 6. Configuring SSH/SFTP (openssh-server) 7. 5. Hi guys, I want to convert my old PC into a home server but I need some help picking an OS. I've heard that Ubuntu Server, Debian, Fedora, CentOS and OpenSUSE are some of the best but I need help picking the right one for my needs as I'm still fairly new to the Linux scene. The server will function as: SAMBA file server Plex Media Server Pi-Hole - Sorry Linus. It's the advertisers' fault, not the content creators'. I'll buy a LTT hoodie and some t-shirts. (Please make women's LTT underwear too!) I may also add other services in the future if I need them. The OS needs to be stable and, most importantly, secure. It also needs to be lightweight because it'll initially be running on fairly old hardware (see below). I would like to use a Linux-based OS so I don't need to run Pi-Hole or Plex in a VM/jail. (I know FreeNAS has a Plex plugin but it can only run Pi-Hole in a Linux VM, adding overhead.) It would also be nice to have long term support or a rolling release so I don't need to fully upgrade the OS every few months. I've tried Ubuntu Server 18.04 LTS on a VBox VM purely just to play around with it and test the functionality of the services I'll be running. I don't mind using CLI/SSH for most things but I would prefer a desktop environment or a web GUI for tasks that either can't be done over SSH or would be easier in a GUI, (e.g. network config, managing storage, etc.) so that kind of rules out the LTS version of Ubuntu Server unless anyone knows how to install XFCE on it. Initial hardware (subject to future upgrades): CPU: i5-650 3.2GHz (3.4GHz boost) Clarkdale Mobo: MSI 2A9C (MS-7613 from HP Pavilion 6000 series) RAM: 16GB DDR3 Storage: TBC - I'm thinking boot from USB and use IronWolves in RAIDZ for storage PSU: CiT 500W 80+ (I know it's cheap crap but it'll do for now till I get better hardware) Thanks in advance for any advice. Leah
  6. So i wanna setup a Samba share and this is my config but i get a weird error. And this is the error i get in a phone client Any help?
  7. Hello, I am trying to connect from one Debian 9 server to another Debian 9 SMB share (access to which work perfectly from Windows 10 PC), and I get an error: SMB share mount error(95): Operation not supported I tried to mount using: sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.2/srv /home/srv2/mnt -o uid=1000,username=uname,password=pass,vers=2.0 sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.2/srv /home/srv2/mnt -o uid=1000,username=uname,password=pass,vers=1.0 sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.2/srv /home/srv2/mnt -o uid=1000,username=uname,password=pass,vers=3.0 Without success. P.S.: Samba server settings from smb.conf: [global] min protocol = SMB3 client min protocol = SMB3 ## Browsing/Identification ### # Change this to the workgroup/NT-domain name your Samba server will part of workgroup = WORKGROUP upd2: dmesg | grep CIFS return: [ 2204.076141] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -95
  8. Ok we know modern consoles need massive drive for games. They usually only take 3.0 external drives but don't allow NAS connections. Is it possible to configure a raspberry pi or arduino to read from a samba server and translate that to read the network drive as usb drive? This seem like a simple hack to getting NAS storage. I don't know of any soft mods.
  9. so i made a new user george then i went i enabled samba. after that, i changed the samba permissions on my share so that user George has read and write access but when i try to log in from windows i get btw i am sure the password is correct. i changed it aswell again just to be sure and i still get this error what am i doing wrong? @Electronics Wizardy
  10. In my home I run a Windows 7 box with UniFi, Plex, and some Samba shares. I have it configured with a static IP and DMZ hosted for access outside the home network. Recently, my main rig couldn't find the server. It appeared on the network, but could not connect. I did the windows troubleshoot, and it said the server was online but not responding. I already checked that the firewall was off and the network was set to private. I also tried using a spare router in hopes of it working. I do run microsoft security essentials to keep the PC, secure. Not shure if that's the problem. I also tried to update the PC but no luck. Also, when i go to the folder im sharing, if i right click and click on properties, then sharing, the server momentarily freezes and explorer sometimes crashes. Please help as i really need this server to work as soon as possible. Thanks in advance.
  11. First off, I have no idea where to put this, I'm putting it here since it's a Linux issue. Secondly, no matter which OS I'm using, rather it is Arch or Windows, I cannot access my SMB shares. I have to SSH into the device (or walk over to it and log in) and type: sudo systemctl restart smbd It's annoying since I have a script that will run pacman and update the system and once updated, it will restart it. Problem is, Samba won't load/broadcast any shares listed in the config. Please help.

  14. Okay, had this happen today. My server is running a) My Minecraft server (about 2-3 players every hour) b ) A FTP server (people check in every hour or so) c) uTorrent, seeding (10 torrents ATM) d) IP-cam server e) My 8TB's worth of storage space Here's the problem that occured today. It happens at random, but escpecially when I stream/copy files to my main desktop At some weird moments the stream/file copy will lock up, and on my server all the users on my Minecraft server will be disconnected. I am using a Intel NIC, which has been working great since I got it, but sadly I have these problems now. I also tried to disconnect the switch at my computer room and run it directly into the NIC, but it didn't help. Any idea what might cause this? I need to get it fixed fast, since I'm going to help out at a LAN party, which will keep me busy. The rest of the specs are in the BOTTOM of this thread http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/107934-storage-server-most-are-set-but-need-input/ Thanks in advance, Kristoffer

  16. Hello, as 10GbE is rather new at consummer grade level, I found this usefull to start a generic thread for sharing experiences, setups, tips... My own experience is 3/4 month old... based on 2 intel X520-DA2 cards and two intel x710-da4 cards, One x710 is in a RS3614xs from synology other cards are in workstations and hooked to a used Arista 7124S switch grabbed on ebay (very very noisy... but do the job for learning !) All is linked with twinax direct attach cables (1m, 3m and 10 m DAC with SFP+ conenctors) I had bad experience with some 10 m active DAC cables from Cisco (reference SFP-H10GB-ACU10M which despite missing the + are SFP+ cables) : those cables are not recognized by the switch. I had chance to test in other switches and it was the same... (but they do work in direct link from machine to machine...) It seems that vendors are not willing so much to go for standardization on this field... So far, getting 10Gb/s performances is not too difficult when testing pure network side with iperf tool (https://iperf.fr/) .This tool allow to avoid bottleneck of drives etc... Tuning of intel drivers offers a lot of knobs, you feel like a newbie in the cabin of a jetliner... and all what online help says is basically "leave to default" which is not such a good way to educate users I guess. What is your experience with that and also other vendors hardware ? The rather difficult part is Samba and shares from the NAS... although thoeretical performances of the drives (SSD loaded in the NAS) should allow to saturate the link, it does not seem that simple and read performances are a little under what is expected : around 850-900 MB/s instead of the expected 1200MB/s (thanks to cache, write performance is Ok even for rather large files/transfer chunks) Also there is this LACP issue on windows 10 and intel... where both Microsoft and Intel are saying that the other part is reponsible, leaving basically Windows 10 without VLAN or link aggragation capability... (not a pure 10GbE point) That all for now, the aim was to start this thread and see what we can share !
  17. Hi, i am trying to make network file server using ubuntu server I would like to make it with shadow copy. Can anyone help me with this? I have tried so many option and search so many techniques in google but all are not working for me.
  18. I have a dual x5430 28 Gig of ram 7x 4tb hard drives Ubuntu 18.08 I am maxing out my 10 gig nic at 300MB/s or 30% of possible throughput. I want to get my full speed. Can I set up a hard drive cache on my SSD. Create a RAM disk for it? I want put in a dual 10gig or even 40gig infiniband. Anyone one have advice. I am about to upgrade to some MikroTik 10gig switches.
  19. So I finally have a 10gb connection from my gaming rig to server. But now I am hitting bottle neck because of the hard drive speed. Is there any linux software I can use to create a ssd buffer that takes the data first and automatically transfers to the zpool I have?
  20. I have a great base system for my file server. Dual Xeons 2.66Ghz 48gig ecc ram 6 Sata ports 8 Sas ports I want to add 6 4TB hard drives also 8 2TB hard drive. Now I was wondering I currently have some 4tb drive in Raidz2 and some 1tb drive in raidz1 in 2 different zpools. What I want to do is to put 8 2tb drive in 4 different 4tb vdevs then add those to the other 4tb drive in raidz2 for a total of about 32tb of redundant storage. Is this good I not sure how to create those vdevs though.
  21. Hello, I am trying to have a samba and owncloud server running on my raspberry pi. I am trying have them run off of a 2TB external drive. I can have on or the other running at any given point but not both of them running of the external drive at the same time. I know that the problem is due to permission so what I was wondering if anyone know how to change the user that smaba or owncloud uses to access files from the raspberry pi or any other solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks squackley!
  22. When I try to connect to my newly configured (read: poorly configured) samba server, I get the error NT_STATUS_NO_LOGON_SERVERS. Here's my smb.conf file: [global] netbios name = PIKACHU workgroup = NOT_A_WORKGROUP security = domain encrypt passwords = yes smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd [fs1] comment = Master file share of zpool path = /pool writeable = yes create mask = 0770 force create mode = 0770 locking = yes browseable = no valid users = zee I'm not sure what other information I can give to help, but the server is running Linux Mint 15, the client that I'm trying to connect with is also running Mint 15, the client is a virtual machine, the host is running windows 7, and I'm able to connect to this samba share via the host.
  23. OK so I've been trying to set up a home server the last few days. 2 days ago I got Samba working on Debian 8.6 (finally) and I could access the files from the Windows computers at home and I copied the files from our old hard drives over to the network. Then yesterday I shut the computer down to re do some cabling and stuff and I was working on trying to get it so I could access the home server even when not on the network when I realized it wasn't even visible on my home wifi network anymore. Wat. So following some instructions I completely reinstalled Samba with : sudo apt-get remove --purge samba sudo apt-get install samba and then sudo apt-get remove --purge smbclient libsmbclient sudo apt-get install smbclient libsmbclient (Well without the sudo. I already used su so I was root). And I went into the smbd.conf file and edited it to add all my network shares at the end, and... It worked. It showed up. But then completely randomly it disappeared from the network. So I want to make sure, after reinstalling Samba, is this what you're supposed to do, assuming I have folders /home/user/family, /home/user/user1, and /home/user/user2 that I want to setup and users user1 and user2 and both should be able to access family, only user1 access user1, and only user2 access user2 (also assuming I've already made the folders)? smbpasswd -a user1 (enter password) smbpasswd -a user2 (enter password) chown user1 /home/user/family chown user1 /home/user/user1 chown user2 /home/user/family chown user2 /home/user/user2 cp /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.bak (just in case) nano /etc/samba/smb.conf Now, I'm not sure on what I'm supposed to do with the smb.conf file. Do I just add in the following to the end? Do I delete everything and redo it? [family] path = /home/user/family valid users = user1, user2 read only = no [user1] path = /home/user/user1 valid users = user1 read only = no [user2] path = /home/user/user2 valid users = user2 read only = no Any help is greatly appreciated
  24. So I am trying to setup a samba server where I can regularly send my windows backups to this server. But windows can recognise the server, but won't access the files within it. I have been at this for a couple days and do not know the problem. If you need any logs or files I will send them. Please help! Thanks!
  25. So I've been trying to get a webserver set up and also need to get Samba share to be working. Below is what happens when I try to install any software that touches those two packages. Any ideas other than a clean install to fix this?
