I recently replaced the thermal paste on my RX 480, it was getting quite toasty while gaming (around 80°C). But after replacing it, the thermals skyrocket when trying to game (over 90°C). To the point where I completely lose image and have to restart the PC. Any ideas on why this is happening? I was considering bad contact between the GPU and the heatsink, but after disassembling and double-checking while reassembling I couldn´t really find anything out of the ordinary (take in mind this is the first time I replace the thermal paste on a graphics card). I figured that by removing the thermal pads on the memory chips I can assure contact with the GPU, but I'm quite sure it's rather risky... (because of overheating on the memory, I figure). Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance! I attached a picture of the state of the thermal paste before changing it (completely dry and crusty) I really can´t understand how I could worsen the situation by replacing it lol.

I changed from a Gamemax GP-500 (500w bronze plus) to a Sharkoon Silent Storm 650w gold plus. And now my GPU only works perfectly undervolted in power limit radeon wattman as low as -50, tried -40 choppy gameplay, -30 even more choppy gameplay,-20 choppy gameplay some games crash pc. Is this a PSU Voltage problem. Or is my GPU to old to handle a new PSU?. Just in case at stock wattman settings so no power limit change it can play some games perfectly, but it dies in games like Witch it, Rainbow 6, Remnant from the ashes, and recently the beta of riders republic(just after the first cinematic jump into gameplay). Also changed from a b550m pro vdh wifi mobo to a b550m gaming edge wifi In case this is the full rig Msi rx 480 gamingx 8gbs x2 G.Skill trident Z 3600mhz(xmp on) Ryzen 5800x Msi b550m gaming edge wifi Sharkoon Silent Storm 650w gold plus

I bought a Sapphire Rx 480 Nitro+ 4GB that the seller said was bricked. I know, I assumed the risk. I connected it, started the pc with the iGPU and started ATI ATIFlash / AMD VBFlash. I checked the exact model number GPU-Z gave me and downloaded the exact bios for my card from TechPowerup. I tried to flash it and It said "this version of bios is already installed" and when I tried other bioses (bioses? plural of bios) they all said "subsystem id mismatch". Before this GPU-Z didn't recognize it, but after the first intent to flash and a restart of the pc it now recognized it. Both Windows and GPU-Z recognize the card as an Rx 480, but GPU-Z doesn't detect any clock speed or memory or temperatures, and windows says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)." I checked the drivers and tried downloading them again from AMD's website with the adrenaline program, but still the same problems. I don't think it is dead because windows actually recognizes it, but is it dead? should I try to force flash a different bios? My PSU is an EVGA 850 B3, so enough power I believe. Also, one of the fans, the first one, doesn't spin and the second one is always very fast and loud. I guess this could be part of the problem, but I also assume they are unrelated and I can fix the fan problem after having the card recognized properly, but I guess is importart for you to know. Finally, my Sapphire Nitro+ (or OC, OC NITRO, OC NITRO+? I actually dont understand this models) is a weird model that is not the regular 4gb one with double bios but one with only one bios and lower clock speeds, I think. The model number is 1002-67DF-174B-E353.

Recently I decided to update my graphics card on the cheap so I decided to go with an rx 480 8gb I bought it off of ebay started it up everything was fine except the fan speed of the gpu is very slow around 800rpm too slow so i tried to increase its speed through radeon settings that didn't work so I cleaned it out and tried again still too slow , so I put a bit of load on it and the card got really hot really quick just wondering what the problem could be as there isnt any noticeable fan noise coming from the card itself

Hello guys! I've been following LinusTechTips forums for a long time and finally decided to register. Thank you for all the help during the years :D I want to ask some general questions as it seems I'm not so good with understanding computers the way I though I was :D I was a PC "master race" member my whole life. But at some point I stopped care. (maybe I got old, I don't know). So my PC build is quite old, 2014 old to be exact (except the GPU that a friend of mine gave me) :D Last year I bought PS4 for some cheap price and I just cannot understand how is it possible for the black box to give me better experience in gaming. (I don't want this feeling, I was a PS4 rebel ffs). Yesterday, I wasn't able to sleep of hating this fact. So I decided to make a profile here with you so I can cry on your shoulder. My PC has the following specs: h97 anniversary motherboard i5 4460 + some cheap cooled - blizzard t2 I think. RX480 (8GB) 16 gb ddr 3 memory - a-data 1600mhz 700W PSU - cooler master master b700w ssd 120 gm Kingston and some hdds My first question is: Is my CPU bottle-necking the GPU? Is not possible for this GPU to be so pathetic. Like, my computer tends to restart when I try to play 3d action game: cod warzone on low-mid graphics (1080p). Some guys on youtube are having the same specs and showing way better results. I have latest win10, latest radeon drivers. 20.2 or so, new thermo-paste, etc, but my general gaming experience is awful (also 1080 editing is bad). At the same time, the ps black box is showing beautiful views on god of war, mk11, and this just feels strange to me. I believe the gpu's price was kinda same as the whole ps4 when released. I cannot withstand the fact, I need 1000 euro PC to fight 250 euro plastic box. My second question is: If I decide to upgrade to r5 3600x should I change the GPU? I like editing a lot and I think of this exact Linus build: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_HKRUPN1Mk Other question: Should I safe for 3700x (r7)? I could use the price difference for a better monitor but I don't want to sacrifice performance a lot. At this point I'm afraid to upgrade, because just maybe, the ps4 will continue giving me better experience than r5 3600x and I will really hate this. Thank you for letting me cry on your shoulder. Be safe guys!

So I just finally bought my RX480 after some time, and deciding to whether wait for the refreshed cards and wait for the price drop. Just to know that that doesn't really apply to where I live (sad) What I need advice is what do I use to monitor its temp? Right now I use gpu-z, is this enough? I've read that people use wattman to OC this card, I'm not really into OC'ing but I wanted to test this card for defects - problem is I can't find wattman download link in AMD's site? (sorry for being dumb) And please, you are all welcome to give some of what are your go-to's when having a new card to test out during the replacement windows. BTW, I will game at 1080p and I am using dual setup with an i5 3rd generation 550w vs550 PSU

I just bought a rx 480 to replace my aging gtx 660. I am getting good fps on my recent games(Doom, ROTR, Fallout 4, BF1 etc) and the OC seems stable. I fired up crysis 1 just to enjoy the performance differential between the 480 and my old gt 9600 (with this gpu I played crysis back in the day). The fps with 480 seemed way too low and the gpu/cpu utilization was very low too. I reinstalled the 660 and got better fps. Plus with the 660 both the CPU and GPU seems to be hitting 100% utilization. I am seeing the same thing with borderlands 2, getting less than 60 fps sometimes - mostly at 90fps. I have cleaned both nvidia and amd drivers with DDU, installed 17.2.1, 17.3.1 and 17.3.2 drivers after DDU cleaning each. Now I am just sitting here scratching my head. The processor is a i5-4590 btw.

So I have made a topic like this before, but on Amazon I have seen some nice deals, and I want to know which one is a RX 480 that can last me a long time. Sapphire 8GB Nitro + MSI RX 480 Armor XFX RX 480 So which one on Amazon should I get? Or you may suggest me another one on a different site, like Ebay.

Will a random 350 watt psu from an unknown brand be enough for the i3 3240 and the rx 480?
-
How will an I3 3240 and a rx 480 8gb will perform in games like doom, fallot 4, assassin's creed, gta v... This is an old pc that I want to upgrade for my cousin. Also I play at 1080p 60hz. 8 gb ddr3 ram. I think he'll use the rx in future rigs with better cpu's. I can get the gtx 960/for 30-40$ more the gtx 1060 6gb. What do you say?

Hello dear LTT-Community, I've recently bought a MSI RX 480 to replace my R9 280x from HiS. Ever since, I've encountered a problem with current monitor setup. Old setup was this: ASUS VE247H <- MiniDP-to-DVI-Adapter-Cable <- R9 280X -> DVI cable-> BenQ XL2411Z (Appearently on firmware v3) <- HDMI cable <- Xbox One (Boo-freakin-whoo) with this setup, I had problem with the Asus monitor. I would encounter artifacts in some pictures, the colors in general looked not as great as compared to the BenQ monitor, with the UFO test from the guys at Blur Busters it fail miserably. the new setup is basically the same. Replace the graphics card with an MSI RX480 and the MiniDP-to-DVI-Adapter-Cable with an HDMI cable and there we go. At first, after getting a new driver von the red team, nothing unsual happened. Once I turned on my xbox and switch the BenQ monitor from DVI to HDMI input.... well... the graphics card "lost" connection with the monitor. not only that, once I switched the monitor back to DVI, both of the monitor blinked for a second or two, the Asus monitor got back like nothing happened and the BenQ monitor either gave me something like a colorful snowstorm in my face or like yesterday, my regular desktop came back but without a background picture.... and that kind of killed my explorer.exe.... Oh and did I mention that the colors went to 'not as fine before' and the Asus monitor magically transmitted the artifacting disease to the BenQ monitor? yeah... I really like having artifacts in some pictures. viewing those pictures in a browser is totally fine, but oh hell no, dont eve think of using the regular windows picture viewer! do you want your eyes to get cancer? because that is how you get your eyes cancer. okay, enough with the rant already. I have no idea what the heck is wrong IF anything is wrong. everytime I switch from DVI input to HDMI input, it happens again. the card loses connection with the monitor. if I try to power off the monitor, it's literally like switch telling the card to run no power whatsoever through the DVI port and ONLY using the Asus monitor as the ONLY connected monitor. any advice of what you might think is wrong, I apprecciate it. if anything is unclear to you, just ask away. gonna try and explain as detailed as possible. thank you guys in advance best regards, Artur

Unable to change core voltage for overclocking a reference RX 480. I would rather use MSI Afterburner than WattMan if possible, but if need be i'll attempt to learn to use WattMan.

Hi! Ok so I am building a second rig for my mom's house, and I wanted to go full AMD. So i'm getting Ryzen basically just so I can go DDR4 for my RAM cause there are NO F*CKING MOBOS THAT HAVE DDR4 SUPPORT OTHER THAN THE ONES WITH B350 CHIPSETS!!! So, I of course want an AMD GPU. I checked out the RX 480, and to go with my color scheme (Mostly black with red accents), I was gonna get the XFX RX 480, but I looked at the reviews and they all said it's an amazing card except under load it runs at about 80-85 degrees! Others said that the heat wasn't the problem but it sounds like a jet engine taking off! I really want to get this card, but i'm skeptical about the cooling performance and acoustics on it. So, i'm thinking i'm gonna replace the cooling. I have no clue HOW to do that, so I was wondering if the LTT community would know anything about that.

I have an Antec NeoECO II 450 watt PSU. My PC has I5 7400, Gigabyte b250m hd3 motherboard, 8gb ddr4 2400 ram, 1TB WD HDD, 240gb PNY SSD, 2* 100mm and 1* 120mm Case Fans (all of them are Antec). So I am planing to buy an AMD GPU as my monitor has freesync. Is my PSU enough for the RX 480 4gb???

I just built my PC Yesterday, and after about an hour of use, I began having display issues with my Sapphire RX 480. It first began when I downloaded Sapphire's TRIXX software and was messing with clock speeds. The screen began bugging out so i rebooted my PC. Now, when I boot up windows, the screen is glitching wherever I move my mouse. Its a bit like screen tearing but only on certain parts of the screen. Additionally, when I went into my bios and peeked around, It was telling me that my card was in a PCIE x16 slot running at x1. When I took out my GPU and reverted to HD 630 Integrated Graphics, everything worked as intended with no bugging. Here's a list of everything I know: - Screen glitches occur while posting in BIOS AND in windows. - Only occurs with my RX 480 (Integrated Graphics work as intended without issues) - x16 PCIE slot is running at x1 Speed Things I have done to fix the issue (without success) - Reinstalled latest drivers - Reverting all BIOS settings to Default - Switching from HDMI to DVI - Re-seating GPU - Uninstalling SAPPHIRE Trixx Software Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.
