I can't really seem to find a decent answer to this so I was wondering: What is Intel's Rapid Storage Technology and is it useful? Thanks!
I want to install Ubuntu in my HP Pavilion. For that it need my Intel RST to be disabled. My BIOS have no option to do that. Only way I'm able to install Ubuntu now, is install 18.04 version that does not give Intel RST error. And then upgrade it one-by-one to higher versions. I want to install clean latest version with ISO Help me!
I'm trying to install Linux on my PC but the problem is it's in RST with Optane mode and Linux never picks up my SSD. I have tried to switch it in the BIOS but the option is greyed out already. I'm using an Acer Aspire 5 a515-54G. I also tried hitting Ctrl+S while in BIOS as stated to to enable hidden configurations but it won't work. What do l do? Please help
Running: Windows 8.1 Pro w/ Media Center Intel RST 15.9.0.1015 (AFAIK latest with support for Win 8) Hardware: ASUS Z97 Deluxe WiFi/NFC i7 4790k at stock, MCE on. Noctua NH-U9S w/ 2x NF-A9 Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+ Storage: see image. EVGA 80+ White 800W Custom SFF case (~ 20 Litres), 2x NF-A8 intake, PSU exhaust. Description: The above Task Manager screenshot is not long after boot, and I’d just restored a Chrome session with a bunch of tabs. Regardless, latencies >1s are common. Between POST and the Windows boot option between 8.1 and 10, it takes ~2 mins where the spinny circles are spinning. This is considerably slower than when I was running just a single 250 GB drive; see bottom paragraph. I should add that when little IO activity is taking place, I have seen latencies as low as 0.1 ms - it’s only when there’s significant amounts of IO - which RAID 0 is supposed to be twice as good at compared to a single drive. My thoughts and potential diagnoses, in order of what I think the probability of fixing the issue is: (1) The stripe size is sub-optimal (though I followed what appeared to be the recommended configuration from Intel) (2) I am running in a SFF case with not brilliant airflow, so the PCH could be overheating and throttling (3) a reinstall would fix this due to the way I migrated my install onto the RAID. (see next paragraph) Migration process: RAID’d the two SanDisks inside Windows 8.1 running on my single Samsung 850 Evo 250 GB, (did a bunch of upgrades accross multiple machines and ended up with 2x 120 GB drives I figured I’d RAID 0 in place). I then used gparted after installing mdadm in a live Ubuntu Linux to clone all partitions across, though had to move the start of my Linux home partiton forward due to migrating from a 250GB to a 240GB volume. The above text is duplicated in the imgur post. What could be causing response times so slow, and what could be done to fix it?
As part of the Role Expansion Plan, the PC I built a year ago is undergoing further expansion to have a separate Ubuntu Linux partition while Windows 7 remains as my primary, turning my build into dual-boot capability. However, the installation process has its issues when RST mode rendered all SATA drives accessible unless I switch to AHCI in the motherboard settings, forced to install in AHCI mode to designate a HDD as its system and mini swap partitions. In RST Mode, Ubuntu fails to boot while Windows runs, while AHCI causes the boot results to be in reverse. Ubuntu has failed to find and install Boot-Repair despite my efforts on 'apt-get install' process with superuser privileges. Since I have work several hours away and need to rest for expected heavy work, I would like to ask for advice to look into and test. I will respond in the next day, but I can leave some other considerations to take note of: Add Edit 1: I'll elaborate further that during Ubuntu install process, the USB containing the Ubuntu Linux live session and installation failed to find any SATA drive (HDD or SSD) and M.2 drive in the process, thinking only the USB flash sticks and external hard drives are only available. And that is only possible when the motherboard is using Intel RST mode, and efforts are made to find the drivers while so far unsuccessful in the endeavor. I do not mind reinstalling Ubuntu again so long as I can get this actually detectable.
So I've been trying to get Intel's RST software on my computer for a few weeks on and off, but to no avail. It claims there is no compatible hardware found, but I know I've been using it earlier, waay back when I didn't understand it. Looking through the logs, I can't seem to find any direct reason for it to fail, but I will ofcourse add the log here for those interested. Now, I believe this might be due to outdated hardware. I sadly bought a quite expensive motherboard from MSI which at the time was their hype, but it broke as soon as I raised the base clock from 100MHz to 110MHz, so my system is having some difficulties on its own. This however doesn't give me reason for the install failure, since then components would have to be broken for real, in which case I'd assume I'd see really noticable side effects, beside the CPU not getting stable power and needing +0.15V just to stay on the base clock. The motherboard is MSI z68a-g65 and the CPU is Intels 2550k, running windows 10 64-bit.
