Why is my Internet speed halved via Port Bridged Modem/Router
Omega7ven posted a topic in Networking
I hope I am in the right chat/forum for this. I recently upgraded my Internet to Telus Purefibre 1GB. When I use the Ookla speed test when connected to my Telus Modem direct from my PC, I get close to 1GB up and down. But when I go through my router (ASUS RT-AC68U) via Port 1 on my Telus Modem and it is set to Port Bridging enabled, I only get about half the speed both up and down? I have some basic to medium understanding the technology and this is my first time on this or any type of forum but would appreciate help to understand why and how to try to get the answer to this issue. -
My little bro keeps on playing only roblox beside me building him a good new pc enough to play AAA games in 60 fps in 1080p. I understand that his friends only play roblox. But he refuses to atleast try online fps games or story games and even refues to install steam. So i want him to stop playing that stupid game for like 2 weeks how do i block the website and app in my router's URL filtering thing. I did but it aint working. I do t want to use open dns

Hello LTT forum, I've been following Tomaž Zaman, a YouTuber who is planning to create a high-end router. His focus isn't solely on providing behind-the-scenes insights into the design and planning process but also on everything involved in commercializing it.... from picking components for the device and seeking investors and establishing a company. What sets this project apart is its commitment to transparency. Through his videos and posts, he intends to document every step of the process, from idea to execution. He's already uploaded several videos, ranging from the presentation of his prototype to announcing his interest in creating and selling the device. He's also discussed potential pricing based on the bill of materials he's already shared. Summary Personally, I don't know him beyond his channel, but I am very interested in this project, and I believe it deserves a litter of exposure for everyone to appreciate. By sharing this project with all of you, I hope to generate additional interest and foster a community that can contribute ideas and feedback. I have been trying FOR DAYS to get a home server up and running using the godawful ISP-provided ZTE F670L (Datasheet PDF Link). Not only that but the dashboard (or control panel) has so many spelling mistakes, sentences that make no sense at all, Wi-Fi devices cannot communicate with devices on LAN, etc. Since I live in Egypt, I cannot get another router/modem that supports a fibre cable (GPON). I thought about getting a new router/modem, connecting that to my ISP-provided piece of garbage, and using the better product to manage the network. The problem is, I am pretty new to all of this, and I did my research and narrowed my options to either the Archer C86 AC1900 or the Archer VR2100 AC2100, both from TP-Link (which I assume is a trusted manufacturer). Which of these options is better for my situation, and how can I connect the two devices (my ISP garbage and the new device) to achieve what I want? I would be very grateful if any of you wizards out there could help. Thanks!

Hello guys. I have an question. I want to upgrade my current router ( old D-link), with something with at least 2.5 GB LAN ports. My problem is that currently all of my smart switches, IoT and some of network infrastructure is connected to the current Wi-fi. Is there a way how to clone the wi-fi network ( SSID, MAC address, obviosly name and PW ) on new router ? I don't really want to open walls to reset and reconnect some of the switches Thank you all.

I’ll give the facts of what happening and what I’m hoping to achieve. My setup: ISP modem is in bridge mode, they (ISP) have provided a static IP to me for years, even when I moved it has stayed the same. So the connection is passed off to my router (ASUS RT-AC5300) for handling. I have had everything setup the way I liked for years, static local IP’s for my NAS, main computer, my dedicated server (old PC repurposed) I use to host games online to play with people once in awhile, all the ports and forwarding ports, ect.. Unfortunately I believe my network was compromised; (Which doesn’t actually surprise me as I had RDP attacks in the past that been flagged when I had to use RDP to connect to my home system from out of town). Now to be fair, last month we had rapid power surges and the Router got turned off and on repeatedly within 3 seconds about with each surge for a good 5 to 6 mins before I got it unplugged. But still feel it’s compromised by an attacker who gain access. I went to log into my router as I noticed my main computer had network activity and wasn’t suspicious, just weird as it was for a server company I used to rent dedicated systems from and it kinda looks like their DNS being used. What I was met with was the router login screen and my credentials wouldn’t work (yes I rebooted the network). My username, and password wouldn’t let me login. Which is why I believe someone else managed to get in through my ISP IP and did who knows what, and then changed my login information. - The Plan - So everything is now unplugged till I can handle it tonight. it sucks having to start from scratch again, but times have changed and maybe someone more up to date on things could help me make sure I set everything up more secure and still be able to game online and once in a blue moon host a few games on my other system. I’m gonna put Asuswrt-Merlin on my RT-AC5300 to try out. I heard it can block attacks from know bad actors by a list using ipset. Also heard it VPN function can be assigned to devices / groups instead of putting the whole router into that VPN mode. I just need to know the best way to set it up to prevent anyone outside of the local network to get access to the GUI / login page. To keep it locked down, but yet easy to host game servers. Also when I do have to open a port for a game or something, what options do I have to insure no one listening for open ports, can’t take advantage of a game port opened.

BACKGROUND I am the IT of my house. I manage the network and deal with the subsequent issues. About 3 years ago I purchased the best of the best TP-Link Archer AX10000 router to go with our brand new symmetrical fiber gigabit. The router is located in the basement and was having issues reaching the middle and top floor. About a year and a half ago I purchased 2 range extenders compatible with the TP-Link OneMesh system, an RE505X and an RE605X. PROBLEM For the past few months our network has been absolute hell. Seemingly random connection drops from wireless AND wired. One device getting a perfect connection while another cannot load a webpage. BG3 will kick whoever I am playing with every 10-20 minutes. Wi-Fi is significantly worse than wired but neither are functioning as I would hope. Sometimes restarts temporarily fix the issue but other times do nothing. I tried decoupling the networks from OneMesh but when I do that the 5Ghz channel is seemingly not getting a boost from the range extender. The ISP claims there is nothing they can do and all their equipment is functioning properly. This has been such a frustrating process but I have some theories about what is happening. My potential theories: 1. The router is failing 2. The router got a firmware update that screwed things up 3. The network extenders plus OneMesh is making the network too complicated 4. Somehow my server computer running game servers is messing up the rest of the network 5. The ISP is actually the issue and they either are lying or don't realize it NEXT STEP Do any of those make sense? Is there any more troubleshooting I can do to remedy this? What would be my best wireless solution for my house? I am looking for any and all help or ideas.

I, like many others, have received an email from Google Domains advising the transition to Squarespace will no longer support DDNS and to find an alternative before the transition. I'm still a bit new to self hosting stuff, so not sure what my best options are? Is it better to get a 3rd party DDNS to work on Squarespace or migrating to another domain provider that has DDNS? Currently I have my ASUS AX86U router doing the DDNS, but it only seems to support very limited DDNS providers. (image) Some of the sites I've looked up so far don't have a free tier with DDNS that I can use my existing domain on. Currently I use the DDNS to externally log into things on my network, like the router, SFTP on the NAS, Plex and other useful pages hosted from the NAS. As I said, I'm still learning all this web domain and name server stuff, so any tips/tricks for this would be appreciated. I have been looking up stuff via networkchuck and similar, but they all seem to be running things like this on Raspberry pi's or Linux servers. So I'm not sure how to translate that on the setup I currently have.

I recently moved into a new apartment, bought new WiFi 7 2.5 GbE routers and the set-up is a bit different. As a result, I can't use Storage Plug & Connect on my QNAP NAS for permanent drive mapping. I've attached a diagram of my network with as much information as possible. I understand the issue is caused by the order of my network: internet > switch > NAS & routers & laptop (wireless) I'm trying to figure out which is the best option to resolve the above issue. move the Router from the living room into the networking closet This is probably the easiest to do but would negatively impact coverage (all walls are concrete). Use one of the Huawei wifi6 routers I'm not using from my last place - free I don't know if this would cause issues due to different brands. Would it work well if I disabled wifi? Buy another TP-link router I could buy either a cheaper WiFi7 or WiFi6 router for TP-link and disable wifi - around $40 CAD I could buy the more expensive WiFi7 BE6500 - $100 CAD some other switch I don't know about I'm looking up SOH, Omada, ethernet switch The less I need to configure in the router the better as it's all in Chinese.

I live in an old house built in the 1960 in Stockholm, Sweden. The house doesn't have fibre internet installed and instead uses the old TV-cable (coax) in the ground for networking. The area is "K-märkt" (rough translation from Cambridge Dictionary: "to designate as a cultural heritage site that warrants special protection and preservation"). This means that we won't be able to install fiber/newer internet cables in the near future, and I'm stuck with paying $30 USD per month for 100 Mbit/s and using and old coax router. On the roof of the tower block right next to my house they recently installed brand new 5G antennas, which means I get about 600 Mbit/s over cellular when using my phone... We are 4 people in my household, each with their own phone, tablet and computer, no one is gaming but we stream a lot of 4K videos/movies.

Hello everyone, so I just moved houses and the only two providers told me that in this area the network is too crowded and could take some months (if ever) for a line to be available and even then the speed would be quite bad because the the are no fibers installed near where we live. The solution both providers offered was a sim card with unlimited data for 30€ a month but I will have to get the router for the sim myself. With my phone on 4G+ the speed flactuates between 20 and 80 Mbps through the day with a median of 30-40. On 5G I usually get slower speeds than that... So my question is, should I get a router that's just 4G or 4G+? Considering the speed is already low would the 4G+ router be redundant or do you think that because I get said speeds with 4G+ on my phone the router with just 4G would be even slower? The reason I'm asking of course is because the 4G+ routers from TP Link (like the MR600) are twice the price from the 4G ones (like the MR6400) and I don't want to invest in equipment that the network may not be about to utilize, hence not even considering a 5G router. If I'm gonna have shitty internet I don't need to overpay for it too...

Hi, i have a router Mercusys AC10. I had turned it off for a week because i wasnt home. Before this it was working perfectly ok. When i tried to turn it on, it said connected but no internet. Tried to restart it, same problem. I noticed how when I restart it i have internet connection for 30 seconds, then it says no internet. I tried resetting the modem also, no changes. The modem is ok. I tried direct wiring from modem to pc, it gives back stable speed. I noticed for the first 30s after resetting when it's connected to net, the WAN LED light on the router is light up constantly, but when i lose connection, it starts blinking. The user guide of Mercusys says: (WAN) Off: The WAN port is not connected. Flashing: The corresponding port is sending or receiving data. On: The WAN port is connected. Please share any help, thanks.

Hi, I'm in search of a new router as my current router(Zyxel AX7501-B0) is creating a lot of Bufferbloat. I'm mostly noticing it when streaming with parsec. I checked on https://www.waveform.com/tools/bufferbloat but all the routers recommended there are "slower" then i would wish. I currently get 25Gb Fiber into my apartment and it would be cool if the router also has at least 1 10Gb Ethernet port. I hope this is the correct place to ask, thanks a lot for your recommendations already.

Hello! I'm having a problem and I can't find any old topics that'd help. My PC was connected straight to a fiber optical router (Halny HL-4GMV4) via cable and I recieved 40-50MB/s of download speed (which is what the internet provider is promising) and all was well. Then I moved to another room in my house. An old router was connected here already through the attic (via cable of course) but I knew it'd be too slow so I changed it to something newer (TP-LINK Archer C6) which promised 1GB/s download speeds but all I'm getting is... 10MB/s download speed now once I connected it to my PC. As far as I'm aware (if my provider would provide me that much speed) I could even be getting up to 100MB/s in theory. 10MB/s isn't bad, it's just less than I expected. The cable connection goes from the LAN port of my Fiber Router straight into the WAN port of my new router. Then from the new router to my PC. My question is: Where did I mess up for my internet speed to be lowered like this? Is this a connection issue/router setting issue or maybe I got something else than promised? I'd appreciate any help you could give me. A (hopefully) helpful diagram is located below for y'all.

So I just built my own machine and when I went to download a game it only says that it is downloading at 10mb/s is it the computer or router?

So my house has thick brick walls and an L shape. The fiber cable comes from the attic at one of the ends of the L shape home. There is a wifi 6 isp provided router. The previous solution was a mesh nodes next to the router and another mesh node at the other and of the L shape home where my TV is. The isp provided router wasn't set to wifi, only the 2 mesh nodes. This solution started dying and the network wasn't even there in the middle of the L shape. Now I'm thinking of buying a 3 pack mesh, but there might be a better solution for this. Can you help me find the best solution? I have 1gbit internet and the cable comes down at that end because my PC is there, so it has wired connection.

Hi there! I'm looking to buy a 3 piece mesh network. I found the Cudy M3000 with AX3000 Wifi6 speed, seems decent. The tplink deco x50 also seems decent but a 3 pack will cost significantly more. Is Cudy a good choice? I can't find people talking about their mesh solutions. Thanks in advance!

I have been struggling to get good wifi signal and speeds in my outbuilding where my office is. Currently the download speed in the main house is 60 download and in the outbuilding only like 10. When I try to play games Im lagging a lot as the latency is spiking up and down. I have tried to use a wifi extender to make a bridge between the two buildings but still no good and then I have now incorporated powerline adapters but still no success. Any ideas how to improve my wifi signal and speeds?
-
Why does this keep happening? While my routers CPU core hits 100% i get a huge latency while i.e. pinging my router. Ive ordered a new asus router with 4 cores. And hopefully that wil solve the problem. But my question is, does anyone know why this happens? We are only 2 people living in this apartment.

Hello, I'm in the process of setting up a pfSense router for my 1Gbps/2.5Gbps home network. I'm looking for recommendations on suitable hardware components or pre-built mini PC systems that are known to work well with pfSense. My primary requirements include achieving reliable throughput, using energy-efficient components, ensuring compatibility with pfSense, having the option for expansion, and selecting hardware known for its durability. If you have specific models or brands in mind that have worked for you. Thank you in advance for your insights. Best regards,

Afternoon, all. I'm currently seeking a modem/router combo that won't start flaking on me in three years. I currently have a Netgear c7000v2 Nighthawk AC1900 modem/router that, for some reason, seems to only be able to hit 100ish mbps. According to my ISP (spectrum), I'm supposed to be getting 500mbps. I've run speed test right next to the router with my S21 and hardwired a laptop to the device, but it won't break 120mbps. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi all, I’m currently at university in the UK and my apartment has a rather restrictive Wi-Fi deal that allows Upto 5 MAC addresses for free. Last year I was in another accommodation and just used an old BT hub 5 to act as my own router and wanted to do that again this year (Also would like to not be restricted to 5 devices). Trouble is they don’t use ‘regular’ ip addresses that you’d usually see (192.168…). So when I go to setup the BT hub, switch the IP address of the hub and turn off DHCP it doesn’t work. Does anyone have any clue as to how I can fix this? I’m at a loss now and have tried everything I can. Thanks in advance
