  1. As anyone with experience in the old IBM SystemX hardware can tell you, it's getting increasingly harder and harder to connect up to them via their dedicated internal management module (IMM). I own two EoL x3950 servers, and in order to even log into the IMM I need to run Edge in IE mode due to their use of HTTP headers that are no longer considered secure. If I want a remote GUI session, I have to run an old version of the JRE that's compatible with Java Web Start. Edge will eventually drop support for IE mode, and I'm a bit worried that when that day comes I'll have to contain my IMM access to some dumb old VM. It's doable, but more than a little annoying. I've searched around a bunch, but not found much, so I figured I'd try asking here. Is anyone aware of any efforts to modernize access to and control of these old rusty beasts? I'm thinking of things like: Modded firmware that modernizes the web UI authentication flow and/or replaces console access with the VNC protocol FOSS clients for remote console access that don't require a stupid old/insecure Java version installed Reverse proxy setups (e.g. via HAProxy or Nginx) that handle the login flow in a way that's friendly to modern browsers
  2. I bought an Insignia NS-SBAR21F20 and was trying to control its volume my LG remote controller (I have a OLED B8), but I’ve can’t find a way to do it
  3. Overview Budget (including currency): 2000 - 5000€ Country: Sweden Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: - Games - VR - Programming - VMs - 3d software (Blender) - GameDev (Unreal Engine 5) - probably some AI stuff (neural networks, image generation, etc.) - CUDA compatibility is a plus in some cases - no video editing or streaming plans - no mining Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): - practically no existing parts - I'm planning to buy something before the end of the summer - resolution and refresh rate: I'm planning to have 2 screens, either 1920 x 1080 or 2560 x 1440 (I don't think I really need 4k) and I want to try 120Hz since I've never tried it before. Also it would be cool to have great colors, brightness etc. (But I assume it has mush less to do with specs of the PC). But also I'm thinking about buying a VR headset and I assume it's basically 2 quite dense high resolution screens. Intro Hello! A short intro about me: I want to get an advice in 2 areas: - component selection for a PC build - organisation of storage for multiple devices (I'll talk about it in the end) Computer part Overall I want to have some latest components like: - a modern cpu like i7, i9 or Ryzen - a modern GPU: either Nvidia 30** or AMD equivalent (or maybe 20** if it makes sense) - a lot of DDR5 memory (32gb or 64gb) - pci 4.0 NVMe SSD or 2+ Tb (ma-a-aybe 1 tb will be fine as well) - mother board, PSU etc, that will support it Preferences: - I would like it to be silent. Not as silent as possible at all costs, but quiet with reasonable performance compromise. (e.g. 5% less performant but 30% more silent, or 20% quieter for extra $200 etc.) - I don't want any RGB, I want it emit as little visible light as possible (I don't mind some small indicator LED's, but not glowing fans) - I want it to be AIR Cooled, water cooling looking quite neat for me TBH, but I want to make sure nothing can leak anywhere as I want to be able to leave it running unattended (or minimize the risk of doing that) - I want it to be stable rather than cutting edge performant (no BSODs, no burn out components etc., so I guess less overclocking to be on the safe side) Note: down in the text I ask questions like "Which Nvidia cards support GeForce now?". While I can google such information I do ask it anyways because: - you may have some not obvious knowledge (e.g. "rtx 3080 support it, but 3080Ti does not", or "all 30** support it but it's unstable on AMD CPUs" etc.) - if you want to recommend me a particular piece of hardware (e.g. Ryzen 7 3700x) I want you to be able to consider these additional requirements in the form of question (e.g. will it support GeForce Now) Special needs: That's the biggest reason to create this post. - good virtualization capabilities (mostly GPU passthrough) - remote access technologies (e.g. vPro https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/business/enterprise-computers/resources/kvm-over-ip.html) - and potentially some other non-obvious features 1. Virtualization I really wanted to have setup that uses VM tech heavily for a long time. What do I need it for: a. separation and isolation of working spaces. I want to be able to fully isolate an environment which I use to work, from one I use to game and from ones I use to download a sketchy software to try it out etc. b. repeatability and repairability or OS state. i.e. I want to be able to create snapshots of states, apply and manage them freely. (E.g. I want to be able to install 100 mods on Skyrim save a snapshot while it works, then install 30 mods more, realize it's broken now and go back to a working state snapshot.) c. get best of Linux / Windows world. - I want to play games, use some software (Photoshop, Unity, Unreal Engine, some less popular ones) - On the other hand I want more control over my system, I want to be more sure it does not spy on me, that it will not decide to reboot and install super urgent updates when I go afk for an hour etc. d. why not dual boot: I have it right now on my laptop and it does not work for me. I want to be able take a pause on my work, go to another screen, play some CS:GO, then after 15 minutes go back to my code/3d-project/etc and continue here. Or even switch back and forth while I'm dead etc. So the need to reboot kills it for me and one of the systems slowly gets forgotten. How I see it working: - I have a host machine setup - it is connected to needed peripherals (screen, keyboard, kvm-switches, etc.) - it has a hypervisor installed (VirtualBox, or most likely Qemu/KVM) - the hypervisor is able to pass the GPU to the VM's so I expect them to gain close to host performance (at least 90%) Whenever I want to play let's say Skyrim, I run a dedicated VM with ready to go setup, it appears on one of the screens, while I still have my linux desktop on another monitor so I can watch youtube meanwhile (it's an example). If I want to work with UE5 I run it separately as a VM as well. If a friend created a hello-world game and send me it as `totally-not-a-key-logger.exe` I can safely run it in a VM as well. If I want to work on my docker based project I can run a linux based VM. If I liked a really promising GTA5 mod that extends the gameplay dramatically, but it patches a bunch of exe files and is published on some smallish website nobody ever heard of I can easily install it inside a VM far away from the workspace where I store I credit card details and pay the bills. etc. Hardware support Why am I writing all this rather software configuration stuff here is because I want to buy full VM friendly hardware. Most obviously I want to be able to passthrough GPU. I tried it in the past unsuccessfully and got stuck because of some Nvidia specific issues. But I tried it with the hardware I had on hands. Now I have freedom to choose stuff which is proven to work fine. So the questions I have for this part are: - What should I look for a good VM support in CPU's? As far as I know virtually all modern CPU's support VT-d, AMDvi etc. But I might be missing something big here. (e.g. whether it matters to have integrated GPU etc.) - Is there a difference between Nvidia vs. AMD right now? As far as I remember there was in the past and Nvidia drivers are more 'closed' ones so it's harder to do some of that stuff with Nvidia's cards. And it was even recommended to buy AMD ones. - Is there a difference within the same brand of GPU and what to look for there. e.g. let's say it's known that 30 series support Passthrough while 20 series don't. - Should I have some considerations choosing some other components? e.g. DDR5 memory does not work with VT-d (as an example) and I would like to know something like that. - It would be great to see some ready to use proven to work setups. - I'd appreciate any feedback and personal experience with that system. - How much software I can expect to run this way? Will I be able to play AAA games, or performance would be far from host? Will I be able to play CS:GO or I get immediately VAC banned because they'd detect I run it in a VM? Will I face lots of instability? Frequent crashes, BSODs etc. Remote control capabilities. vPro? I find it really useful sometimes to be able to remotely control the machine, and I mean to control all of it, including OS installation and restoration, BIOS settings etc. This can be achieved with KVM-over-IP setups. But as far as I understand intel support something like that natively (vPro, AMT etc.) Here I want to understand: - if it's worth to have it? - does AMD have something similar? But overall I can easily sacrifice it if it requires a performance drop, significant price increase or lack of other features. Nvidia GeForce Now If I understand it correctly this (and probably other similar) technology allows not remotely control the host, but game on it with some comfort. I expect to see some picture quality / framerate drops as well as some reasonable latency increase. Of course I don't expect to be able to play CS:GO competitively with such setup but it'd nice to be able to play some slow to medium paced games (Skyrim, Sims etc.) remotely. The question is: - is it limited to Nvidia? - which Nvidia card support it? - does AMD support something similar? - is it worth it? How I want to use the PC - as I mentioned before I want to be able to use VM's extensively - play games - play VR games - software development - 3d modeling - game development Programming I want to be able to have many IDE instances opened, a few dozens tabs of stackoverflow and potentially a few VM's containers running. It's one of the reason I want to have some extra RAM. But from CPU / GPU perspective I expect to be way lower than AAA game consumption. In some rather techy applications it may be beneficial to have CUDA cors (if a piece of software is only support CUDA or optimized for it) 3d modeling Sometimes I feel like my laptop struggling with my highly unoptimized Blender models, so this area may benefit from an upgrade. Game development I really want to try out new UE5, but not even dare to install it on my current laptop. So it would be great to be able to play with it. I don't think I need enterprise level gamedev working station though. Something that is suitable for indie gamedev would be good enough. Games I plan to play a few older titles and I want to highlight a few modern-ish titles I have interest trying out or playing. (it actually would be nice to know if some newer hardware does not support older games e.g. Morrowing won't launch on rtx3090) Older ones: - TES Series (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim) + lots of mods - GTA5 - CS:GO Newer ones: - Insurgency: Sandstorm - Escape from Tarkov - Witcher 3 - Cyberpunk 2077 (probably) VR Gaming I don't know what to consider in regards of VR Gaming. I'm not sure I'll buy a VR set right away, but I want the PC to be able to handle it in the future. I'm leaning towards buying Valve Index in the future. Game-wise I'm looking for: - Half-life: Alyx - Skyrim VR and any other compatible titles. Network and organization of space Previously I described only the tower part of the setup. But besides the case I expect to have more equipment in the future: - PSU - ethernet network switch - NAS - some smaller network devices (e.g. raspberry pi) - KVM-over-IP device - separate server like pc etc All of that will be interconnected through wired network and power lines. If I keep all of it under/on the table it would supper messy. So instead I thought about storing and running all of in some sort of a shell. Something that looks like a server cabinet, where I can put my tower pc, some other devices and manage external cables. Plus I can put a few fans there to help cooling the PC and other devices. Questions: - Is it a reasonable thing to do? (or e.g. it will inevitably lead to overheating) - What can I use as a cabinet/shelf? The real server cabinets cost quite a lot and I don't think I need them. I also found this server looking shelf in IKEA https://www.ikea.com/se/sv/p/ivar-skap-med-doerr-gra-mesh-60483972/ and wondering if it's possible to reuse some general purpose furniture for that idea? --- I'm looking for any ideas / feedback from you

Hello Guys I Bought cooler master TD300 MESH and I have a question , can I control the RGB Fans in the Case by My phone ?
  5. I just seen this video, and it got me thinking… this shouldn’t be too hard, and it would save me money, time, and headaches of AA batteries. Does anyone know of any pre made kits designed for the Logitech Harmony 665? Something that would fit in place, Dremel if I need, I can solder in and it has a nice replacement battery door with a usb charging slot built in? Preferably with the logic board that prevents over charging and allows “play and charge.” If a kit like that doesn’t exist, could someone recommend a battery and the logic board that isn’t going to catch fire, and would physically fit in the Harmony 665, with or without slight modification.
  6. I’m planning on building a Pop! OS Linux desktop to pair with my Mac Mini M1. The Mac sits on top of the desk, acting as the primary daily-driver and light-duty device. It’ll be connected to a couple of displays, and a mixture of daily-use and gaming peripherals. The Linux system, which I plan on effectively building inside of one of the desk drawers and liquid cooling out of a nearby window or something, is meant to pair with the Mac as a separate processing device, and is meant to be the grunt behind the work I do on the Mac Mini. However, I do not want to switch between these two systems, I just want to work through the Mac Mini. For example, to play games, I want to be able to open an icon on the Mac’s application bar, and it opens Steam on the Linux machine, and routes the video through the Mac and the display attached to it. I’d like to be able to put something together in Blender, then have the files sent to the Linux machine for rendering, with the final result coming back to the Mac Mini for viewing and/or further editing. If possible, I’d like to have full control of the system through the Mac, including power on/off, sleep/wake, and updates. Ideally, the only hardware video output for the Linux system will be for a small monitor showing diagnostic data. What would be the best way to go about this? Are there any apps that I should install on one or both systems? Should the Linux system be run through a hyper visor? Is there a way to be able to open up the drives connected to the Linux system in Finder and interact with them? I know that networking over Thunderbolt is an option through SSH or something, which might solve some of these questions, but— and I don’t know if this is a thing— I’d like something more… direct. Something that utilises the full 40Gb speed of the Thunderbolt connection, instead of just a 10Gb network passthrough. Budget (including currency): US$2,048 (Including custom liquid cooling) Country: North America. Probably. Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Games: City Skylines, Euro Truck SIM 2, Assetto Corsa, Left 4 Dead 2, Don’t Starve Together, FTL. Applications: Blender (rendering), Photoshop (rendering), CAD, code compilation. Other details M1 Mac Mini Two displays connected over a Thunderbolt hub in the first port. OS CPU: Ryzen 5700G Graphics: Ryzen 5700G RAM: 32GB of Corsair DDR4, 3200MHz Networking: 2.5Gb Ethernet to internet, pass through to Thunderbolt 4 Bridge for the Mac Mini, ideally. 7. I wanted to buy a LG Magic remote for my LG43UJ634V but they're really expensive, is there any good thrust worthy site that as better prices?
  8. If you have a couple of different systems running BOINC and want to manage them remotely using the included BOINC Manager program or other software such as BoincView here's what you'll need to do to get it up and running. For example, say we want to manage the system from IP Address 192.168.1.17 on our home network On a remote Ubuntu Linux system: sudo echo 192.168.1.17 >> /etc/boinc-client/remote_hosts.cfg Optionally, if we want to use the password "boinc": sudo echo boinc > /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg and we need to restart the BOINC Client service for the changes to take effect: sudo service boinc-client restart On a remote Windows 10 system you either have to create or edit these files which should be in c:\ProgramData\BOINC and then use the BOINC Manager on the Remote System and Select "Shutdown Connected Client" from the File meneu and then restart BOINC Manager from the Windows Program menu. Now from the system you want to manage the systems from you just need to have the BOINC Client installed (it doesn't have to be configured though) and run BOINC Manager from it and click "Select Computer" from the File menu and enter the hostname or IP address of the Remote system and, optionally, the password.
  9. I was hoping that you guys could give me some recommendations. I can't use RD because the pc I want to use on the same lan network has no password. and you can't use RD without a password.
  10. So, I have a remote SSH connection to an Ubuntu Server machine about... 100 miles away and I'm trying to configure an email server on said machine. Trouble is, I need to get into the router, that's 100 miles away, to do some port forwarding to allow those ports to go through. Now if I were a sane person I'd have installed a VPN, or remote control on a computer on that local network to talk to the router, but I'm not a sane person, so I didn't. I have a couple questions, starting with: CAN THIS EVEN BE DONE? Keep in mind that the OS that I'm talking to from 100 miles away is the Server version of Ubuntu, and, therefore doesn't have a GUI, so, it can't render "graphics" past ascii, so I can't do the linux equivalent of going into windows and setting up a remote desktop connection. The router in question is a "cisco dpc3848vm" it was stock from the ISP in the area. What do I need to do to set this up in any semblance of a timely manner? If there's packages that need to be installed on the Ubuntu machine to talk to the router itself Will there be any funny business to get the Ubuntu machine to communicate to the router? What's the process to do this sort of thing (if at all possible) Meaning, the installation process (if necessary) Configuration of any packages that'll be required Getting the Ubuntu machine to communicate to the router Getting the port-forwarding to happen.
  11. Tech genies help! I have a dell poweredge 2950 server, and it had a drac 5 controller installed. I've never used something like that before and i'm having some trouble. In the setup there are a couple of options. I've seen some tutorials but they don't explain much for someone who has not used remote access controllers before. A picture of the configuration menu is attached. These are the two places where the tutorials did setup. Does someone know how to set this up?
  12. So i want to use my beefy home PC from school, and i know i can use LogMeIn to do that but i dont want to leave it turned on always. 15. Hello, I recently repaired my old Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2 with Windows 8.1 Pro which I got from the company where I worked before and somehow I can't upgrade it to Windows 10 and also I can't dual-boot Debian (installed with wubi) which I installed on internal memory and also if it is installed to my SD Card. My question is if there is any 2018 method to upgrade to windows 10 Pro (I have actually an 10 Pro Retail key) and my second question is if I could somehow create an VM with Debian on it and let the Tablet boot into it over the network without needing to boot into Windows first. I actually already done something like this on my Dell thin client but this method doesn't work on this tablet, however I can boot it into Windows 10 PE if I use my USB SSD drive which is actually getting 289mb/s Read - 214,5mb/s Write on this tablet. Does anyone have an solution to my problem? I actually don't care about the connectivity issues because I have an SIM Slot in the tablet and I also have unlimited data contract
  16. Hello, So a couple days ago my sister noticed that the mouse was moving on her screen. Someone was remotly controlling her computer. She then reset her computer to factory. The a couple minutes ago. I got up from leaving my computer alone for an hour or too and saw that I was on a new google chrome tab with a mstsconnect popup. The popup was asking for a username and password. I did not see anyone controlling my pc but I know for a fact I did not open that and have never messed with msts. I dont know if they ever did control my pc and what info they did get. What can I do to stop this. I have sesitive information on my computer I cannot have other people having. What can I do. 4 people use the same IP address so are we all in vulnerable situation? I have not been on any sketchy websites either. Recently I have just been using reddit, youtube and my schools website. Please help Thanks, Dylan
  17. So I have a Windows laptop that is a workbench PC and my MacBook that is my daily use device. What software/type of deal is best to use to control my Windows PC from my MacBook? They are usually on the same desk right next to each other (the screen is always closed on my PC, but it's always on). I tried using the free Windows remote desktop control program but it says they are not in the same network - I'm using dorm internet and although all ports are open, I think there's just too many bridges and stuff in the wifi network so it's not possible to connect to it locally. Same reason why wifi calling doesn't work between my iPhone and Mac. Nothing I can do to fix this. Only program I can think of is Teamviewer but I hate the latency. Any other recommendations? Free is 100% preferred but if you can offer some amazing solution that is paid, I'm open to it. Thank you!
  18. Hello guys, I have a raspberry Pi with Raspbian that is being used as a PLEX server (with an external HDD) and I also want to set it as a download station, so, for this I would like to remove access it from my windows 10 PC. I read some way for team viewer to work in the Pi. I also read a VNC option, willing to try both but want to k now which one would be the better option. ALso, how well does the Team viewer will work in it? I already use it to manage my other PC so it could simplify stuff on the windows side at least. Cheers.
  19. The title says all, I just need a cheap high-quality PC light strip, any recommendations?
  20. This mod was completed in entirety between 1:30am and 3am this morning. Fumbling around in the dark, I was too lazy to get out my soldering iron and make an internal wiring/mounting solution. As there wasn't a hole in the rear of the case large enough to put the power cord/plug for the bulb socket through (I wasn't going to get out the Dremel at 2am with my 8 year old directly above me asleep in bed,) and after deciding that I actually wanted the side of the case closed, but that just setting the bulb against the lowest expansion slot with the cover off was TOO ghetto, I engineered this marvel. This is not exactly a shiny, new gaming rig, it's just my 80's-90's ConsoleEmu rig, so ghetto is fine. Parts: -Cheap (about $5 shipped) LED bulb with E27 screw base and remote control. (I've had this lying around for years) -Cardboard -Tape Tools: -Pirate Revolver Mini-Switch-Blade (ESSENTIAL TOOLING: REQUIRED! :p) , Prep: -LPT & Serial punch-outs removed from rear of case Steps: -Cut cardboard to fit -Put bulb in cardboard -Tape/Mount cardboard and bulb to case over open punch-out holes -Clamp cardboard to back with side panel -Attach cord to bulb -Plug in cord to wall/socket (do this last so cord isn't twisted) -Reassemble case -Select color/pattern with remote Result: BOOM! Remote control RGB case lighting on the CHIZZEEAP!
  21. Welcome to the new LinusTechTips Hobby Grade Remote Control thread! **Please Don't Quote Pictures!** What is Hobby Grade RC? Hobby grade RC's are not toys. they are fairly costly and require maintenance. However, they are customizable and lots of fun to run! What is this thread for? Post about RC! Show off your vehicles, ask questions, really anything related I currently own two RC's: Redcat Racing Tornado EPX: It needs a new ESC and Motor, 2s Lipo(s) with a charger, new front bumper and a new carbon fiber spoiler assembly. Cool little buggy though for $200. Redcat Racing Volcano S30: Don't have any pictures at the moment, as its in pieces needs a new gearbox and exhaust pipe. Pictures soon!
