I am genuinely disappointed in how little progression has been made in UltraWide Display Tech in the past few years. More than 5 years ago, I bought my current Asus ROG 34" 3440x1440p 100Hz monitor for $699.99. Now days it seems the same money barely gets you the same features plus maybe HDR and an upgrade to 144 or 165Hz and honestly Im not sure if I even want to do it. Sure, my new Radeon RX 7900-XTX is easily blowing right by 100 FPS even at Ultra settings, usually delivering 130-140 FPS, but people forget that what your eyes see versus how the game responds are two completely separate things. Running 120+ FPS on a 100Hz monitor is slightly beneficial as the game can feel ever so slightly better and your actions have less input lag. And 100Hz is more than enough for your eyes anyways. On top of this - the ROG display is incredibly capable - even with games that run at 200 FPS and beyond, I see no screen tearing of any kind. This Asus ROG display is already an IPS 1ms response panel, the only downsides are that Im blowing by the maximum refresh rate with ease (and yes the display is already OC-ed, stock out of the box its a 90 Hz display), and this is a G-Sync only monitor so I can no longer use variable refresh rate tech. But I can enable V-Sync in games to limit FPS anyways and your eyes don't really need more than what I already have. I usually just enable a custom FPS lock of 120 and just enjoy a smooth experience at completely maxed-out Ultra-Everything Settings hardly ever seeing the FPS drop below that 120 limit. But I kinda want to upgrade just to better utilize the power of my new GPU and maybe for AMD FreeSync and possibly HDR compatibility and thats about it. As far as I can see, there are only two options currently available that fit the bill for a similar price - The LG UltraGear 34" 3440x1440 144Hz (160Hz OC) "AMD FreeSync 2.0" Nano-IPS 400 Nit Curved IPS Gaming Monitor - HDR NOT officially supported - $699.99 - BenQ EX3415R - 34" 3440x1440p 144Hz (MPRT) "AMD FreeSync Premium" HDR-400 Certified, Curved IPS Gaming Monitor - $799.99 Wow, so 5 years later and almost no progress for the price you pay. So should I just wait another 5 years and maybe eventually a decent option will show up for a decent price, or just go ahead and save for one of these options and just deal with the poor value? Of course I could sell the current monitor to make up for some of the price difference but I won't realistically get more than $250-$300 for it at best. I was genuinely expecting to find 34" IPS Panels at 3440x1400p 144Hz with HDR for under $500 considering its 5 years later and 16:9 1440p displays have already moved beyond 240Hz and you can get a 240Hz IPS 2560x1440p panel for like $300. By the way, I have no interest in 4K - and before you ask - its because yes, I am aware that there is basically ZERO improvement to the human eye going from 1440p to 4K unless your eyes are less than 18 inches from the screen on a standard-sized monitor under 50". Plus I enjoy UltraWide gaming and 4K UltraWide (5120x2160p) will probably be too much for the XTX if I want High refresh rate (which I do, I prefer at least 90 FPS and am completely happy at 120 FPS).

I'm asking, because I think this is what is causing the stuttering in certain games like Hitman 3. Every fifteen seconds or so, the screen freezes. And I know its my ethernet causing the device manager screen to constantly refresh because it stops refreshing when I disconnect it. What gives here? I've tried reinstalling the drivers for my NIC Adaptor, even went with the nuclear option and reset the modem.

Hey there, as stated in the Title, i had a happy little Accident and now i need some new PC Parts considering that i need the PC for my Work. I think i stated everything pretty well, but please feel free to ask any Question! OS: Windows 64bit 10 Pro I will probably move to Linux once i can get drives and setups for all my software/games, but this shouldnt be an issue for PC Parts now. Budget As ive already bought the majority, so GPU and PSU. I only need a CPU Cooler, CPU, Mainboard and 3x new top 120mm Fans. 1300€+ should be fine as far as i calculated, but anything lower would be great. Country: Germany Monitors 2x LG27GP850-B Peripherals Hyper X Alloy Origins Keyboard Logitech Pro Wireless Steelseries Artics 7 Headset Marshell Stockwell 2 GoPro Hero 7 Black Verbatim 4 Blue Ray Player via USBC 3.2 Gen x2 Rode Podcaster (USB) As you can see i need a lot of USB Ports, so this would be needed on the Backpanel of the Mainboard as well as the Frontpanel Ports of the Case. Of the 6 available USB 3.0 Ports mostly all are used constantly, anything more would be super great, but i dont necessarily wnat to get PCIE USB card, if possible? Old parts ( that will be reused ) NZXT H710 Case 2x Samsung Evo Pro SSD (total storage: 1tb) 4x HDD 7200 RPM HDD's (total storage: 10tb) Elgato 4k Mk.2 Capture Card 32GB Trident Z 3000 mhz DDR4 (probably needs to be replaced but i am unsure) CL14-14-14-34 (F4-3000C14D-32GTZR - sadly not available anymore) Why are you upgrading? So i was using a i7-8700k together with a NVIDIA 980ti, there was actually no need to upgrade as everything was running fine. Well until Christmas 2021, my Graphics Card somewhat exploded. Sadly and thats basically the main Reason why i have to upgrade, the PCIE Slots are not working anymore on the Mainboard properly (its a Asus Maximus Hero X). Right now i am stuck using the internal GPU. The PC is needed for work and general Gaming/Streaming and Video Editing. As a Developer i compile a lot of Software so generally a lot of CPU Cores are welcome. Current Plans Usually i plan all my PC Components myself, but this time i am not so sure anymore! First of all ive been using INTEL for the last 12 Years now but i thought due to the recent rise of Ryzen it might be worth considering a Change. I was planning on moving maybe over to a AMD RYZEN 5900x or 5950x ( together with a Asus Maximus Hero VIII ), never used AMD so its more a wild guess. Unfortunately i cannot wait for new PC Parts, otherwise i wouldve probably waited for AM5.. Quick Note: I have already bought a MSI NVIDIA RTX 3080ti Ventus and a BeQuiet Titanium 1200W for the new Setup. Okay so basically i need some more recommendations for Mainboard, CPU, CPU Cooler and a NAS with 2-4 Slots should be fine! New Setup plans for now: AMD RYZEN 5900x or 5950x Asus Maximus Hero VIII Noctua DH-15 ? 3x 120mm new top fans ( not sure whats good here too ) 1-2x NVMe Samsuns Pro ( need some more faster storage ) NAS, oh boi after the explosion, i gonna hook that up tho. Thanks for reading and i appreciate any help!

Hello, Up until recently i.e. this week my Ryzen 9 MSI RTX 3080 TI PC has been running perfectly at 1440p 165HZ BUT in the last few days it has randomly started to micro stutter framewise even in older games and even if set to 1080p e.t.c. I have tried the general troubleshooting steps: - Update drivers - Reseat and Reset parts - Close background tabs - Turned off G-Sync / Turned On G-Sync same with V-Sync to see if makes any difference I am looking at rolling back my graphics driver to version before 20/9/21 see if that does anything but really looking for help as this system was running perfectly until this week PC Specs: 64GB 4x16GB DDR4 3600Mhz Ram AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor 3.70 GHz MSI RTX 3080 TI 12GB VRam The PC was running perfectly fine and at 1440p 165Hz no problem on ultra settings for the games I play but now just stutters randomly and also when alt-tabbing (which I know can be caused via G-Sync). Monitor is a Gigabyte G27QC A Video evidence: https://youtu.be/aEZkt4pMgBU GPU Voltage was around 95-96% when this was happening again I changed NOTHING from how it used to run.

Hi all, I've had my pc for a while now and just recently (about a week or so) my desktop applications have been intermittently turning into white sheets for roughly a second, then turning back. I have no idea if it's my desktop refreshing or corrupted files. I've tried restarting my computer and following various google tips but nothing seems to work. On my other pc (which does the same thing) I tried doing a complete system wipe and the problem still persists. Thanks, Alex

I got this as a birthday present but the issue is when we connected it with VGA to a laptop it says 120hz, but when I plugged it to the desktop with a HDMI to DVI cable it only gives 60hz? What gives? Arent DVI able to do 144hz+ or am I mising something? The spec sheet I found online said maximum 85hz... :I

I recently switched away from a B250 + i5-7400 combo to an H310 + i3-9100F one... The i3 is a pretty decent CPU and for now is serving me well, as I rarely do 3D gaming (but when I do I play flight simulators or space simulators such as SpaceEngine [not Space Engineers]). Also I like virtualizing alternate operating systems for testing. Wanted to exit Kaby Lake which has been discontinued and offered no affordable upgrade path, and went to 9th gen (as Comet Lake is still kinda expensive in Brazil)... So chose the MSI H310M PRO-M2 Plus Mobo + the Core i3-9100F. Is the i3 enough for my usage or will I need a CPU upgrade in the near future? If yes, which one will give me the best bang for the buck? The 6-core/6-thread i5-9400F or the 8C/8T i7-9700F?

Clearing up the AMD 300 series confusion
harrynowl posted a blog entry in Dispelling some R9 300 series confusion
OK, so there's a bit of a debate about it recently and a few tech YouTubers have also given their opinion, so it's only relevant that some random nobody with too many posts on a tech-forum also gives theirs. I'll start off with what GCN cards AMD has released since 2012. 300 Series: R9 390X - Hawaii XT 2816 Stream processors based on GCN 1.1 R9 390 - Hawaii PRO 2536 Stream processors based on GCN 1.1 R9 380 - Tonga PRO 1792 Stream processors based on GCN 1.2 R7 370 - Pitcairn PRO 1024 Stream processors based on GCN 1.0 R7 360 - Bonaire PRO 768 Stream processors based on GCN 1.1 200 Series: R9 290X - Hawaii XT 2816 Stream processors based on GCN 1.1 R9 290 - Hawaii PRO 2536 Stream processors based on GCN 1.1 R9 285 - Tonga PRO 1792 Stream processors based on GCN 1.2 R9 280X - Tahiti XT 2048 Stream processors based on GCN 1.0 R9 280 - Tahiti PRO 1792 Stream processors based on GCN 1.0 R9 270X - Pitcairn XT 1280 Stream processors based on GCN 1.0 R9 270 - Pitcairn XT 1280 Stream processors based on GCN 1.0 R7 265 - Pitcairn PRO 1024 Stream processors based on GCN 1.0 R7 260X - Bonaire XT 896 Stream processors based on GCN 1.1 R7 260 - Bonaire PRO 768 Stream processors based on GCN 1.1 7000 Series: 7970 - Tahiti XT 2048 Stream processors based on GCN 1.0 7950 - Tahiti PRO 1792 Stream processors based on GCN 1.0 7870 - Pitcairn XT 1280 Stream processors based on GCN 1.0 7850 - Pitcairn PRO 1024 Stream processors based on GCN 1.0 7790 - Bonaire XT 896 Stream processors based on GCN 1.1 7770 - Cape Verde XT 640 Stream processors based on GCN 1.0 7750 - Cape Verde PRO 512 Stream processors based on GCN 1.0 Versions of GCN and improvements GCN 1.0 - Initial release with the 7000 series in 2012, uses a SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) arcitecture instead of the old VLIW design used in previous arcitectures like the 5000 and 6000 series. Each GCN compute unit totals 64 stream processors. AMD launched it as a long term building block for future GPUs, which is why they still use it today. GCN 1.1 - GCN 1.1 was a minor iteration that added feature support for TressFX and TrueAudio, and improved PowerTune support. Most of the improvements were compute and HSA focused for the APU side of things. GCN 1.2 - GCN 1.2 is a release we have only seen in Tonga and Fiji so far, the big focus with the release of the R9 285 was power efficiency improvements, AMD improved their instruction scheduling and added newer instruction support, the additional 16 bit Floating point & Integer instructions means that less power can be used on applications that do not need the mathematical accuracy of 32 bit instructions. The new Fiji GPU has a reworked memory architecture so it works with the HBM memory. Improvements in manufacturing So a term thrown around a lot is "refinements", unfortunately no-one has been too specific about the refinements but there are board level improvements and the process used has seen improvements. Both AMD and Nvidia have used the same TSMC 28nm manufacturing process since 2012, over time as the process matures the ability to produce big chips consistently improves, and performance consistency also improves. We get less leaky chips. Which means we can have higher stock clocks, better overclocking and the better chips achieve this with the same or less voltage than before, which leads to a lower average power draw. This is very similar to Intel's Haswell Refresh/Devil's Canyons (note how people are fine with this being called refresh and not rebrand?). The new cards have also received higher clocked VRAM, from 1250 to 1500MHz. VRAM AMD have generally been more generous than nvidia when it comes to VRAM in the past. This is still true for the most part, the Hawaii based products now offer 8GB of VRAM, AMD were saying a lot about Crossfire technology and have improved crossfire support in their new drivers as well, AMD would like people to pair multiple R9 300 series cards to play games at 4K and above resolutions and they've given us the framebuffer to achieve this, reviews have demonstrated that above 1080/1440p the R9 390 and the 970 begin to make more of a gap in the 390s favour and some games will cap out the 970s effective 4GB VRAM. They also offer a 4GB version of the R9 380 at a similar price to nvidias 960 4GB. Pricing Here I'll list the MSRP launch price of the products from the 200 and 300 series and the 900 series nvidia cards, a lot of people are saying you might as well pick up the 290X as it's very close to the 390X and is cheaper, which is true. You also need to consider that the 7970 was cheaper than the R9 280X until it went out of stock... very quickly. So if you want to buy you may want to buy now, as this will not hold true for long. Note I am only listing the 200 series cards that have a 300 series equivalent. 300 Series: 390X 8GB: $429 USD 390 8GB: $329 USD 380 2GB: $199 USD 370 2GB: $149 USD 360 2GB: $109 USD 200 Series: R9 290X 8GB: $459 (note: the 4gb price had been cut to around 399 by the time this card launched) R9 290X 4GB: $549 R9 290 4GB: $399 R9 285 2GB: $249 R9 265 2GB: $149 R9 260 2GB: $109 900 Series (including 700 series maxwell): GTX980: $549 GTX970: $329 GTX960: $199 GTX750ti: $149 GTX750: $119 Performance: R9 390X: This card is priced a bit lower and performs a bit worse than the 980, but will beat out the 970. I'll use GTA5 as an example here due to the cards high end nature.- 4 comments

Budget (including currency): $2,000 USD Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Computational modeling (MATLAB, python, more), CAD (Inventor, SolidWorks, more), Civ games (Civ5/6, Anno, more), some cinematic games (Witcher, Elden Ring, etc), League. Definitely some minecraft. Other details Sample build I made is listed here. Items moving from current to new build are listed as purchased. Hey everyone! I've been out of the loop for a while (grad school) and I could use some help with a new rig refresh. My current PC has been working great since about 2016, but I've been getting into more computationally demanding work and now it can't keep up. I ran into some money and have decided to throw it at a new upgrade. The biggest problem is that I am just not up to date with the best price/performance at each tier now! I could also use some help ensuring compatibility with a few things: CPU/Board updates? I know there was the whole fiasco with needing a sample CPU to update the BIOS or something a while back. It seems that pcpartpicker is still showing this warning? Should I worry? Power supply draw? I'm hoping to roll over my 650W from my previous build, but I know the new CPU lineups are crazy power hungry. Any issues here? I probably won't be overclocking any time soon. Peripheral upgrades are definitely a must. My 2010 razer deathstalker and 2011 razer naga are showing their age. I'd like to make the switch to a mechanical keyboard (preferably without dropping $953,403,203 on a new one), but I'd like to keep the "gamer-y aesthetic" to a minimum (ironic I know with current razer peripherals). Monitor addition is also a must - my current Dell has started getting some dead pixels and other issues. I'm going to use it as a secondary monitor till it burns up. Monitor compatibility with arm mount? I've never arm mounted a monitor before and I'm not sure how to go about checking the compatibility for this. Can someone link a guide or give the tldr? I'll also note that the local used market where I live is pretty ~meh~. I certainly wish I could find some used parts that were decent, but I think the pickings are pretty slim.

A Hong Kong-based outlet has acquired 10th gen Intel Comet Lake S parts, complete with fully functional boards, BIOS and microcodes. The i7 is just more of the same (basically a 9900K rebrand) while the real shitstorm are the lower end CPUs. The i5 appear to be standard 6/12 affairs with disappointing performance even compared to Zen 2, I can only imagine how much worse they'll get annihilated when Zen 3 comes in a few months. As expected, LGA1200. I can already imagine Intel executives' mouths watering at the prospect of selling yet more chipsets. EDIT: Comet Lake-S PL2 and PL1 limits revealed. OUCH. That's just absurd. THOUGHTS: Disappointing, very disappointing. I hoped at least some cache or clock improvements would push these CPUs further but, as it stands, they're no better than existing 9000 series models. THOUGHTS 2: Power Overwhelming [Cheat Enabled} Source 2:https://www.notebookcheck.net/Comet-Lake-S-may-require-hefty-CPU-coolers-Core-i9-10900F-shown-to-have-a-170-W-PL1-TDP-and-224-W-PL2-for-a-4-6-GHz-all-core-boost.460196.0.html Source: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Hong-Kong-outlet-leaks-Comet-Lake-S-performance-review-i7-10700-i5-10600K-i5-10500-and-i5-10400-go-up-against-AMD-Ryzen-3700X-3600X-and-Coffee-Lake.459680.0.html

If anyone has been keeping tabs on me, you'll know I'm deep into this USB SD card reader project of mine. I'm at a point where everything seems to work, but there's a catch. If I plug my USB SD card reader into the PC first, then plug my SD card into it, the computer doesn't see the SD card. If I plug my SD card into the reader first, then plug it all into my PC, the computer sees it. Problem is if I remove the card and try to reinsert it, the computer won't read it again. With or without the card, the computer still chimes when I plug the USB reader into the port, so the stick isn't dead. From what I understand, the USB SD card reader attempts to read what's plugged into it only once at the point it receives power from the USB port. Is there a way for me to re-program the stick or my computer to keep making the stick re-check itself for an SD card? Of course I don't want it to keep re-prompting me over and over again if I leave an SD card in it. Is there a way I can keep my USB SD card reader alive and open to me inserting and removing SD cards while just leaving the stick plugged in? (PS. The answer is not to buy a new reader.)

I was playing GTA and noticed that my refresh rate was locked at 60, so I was tampering with all the settings to get back up to 144. I switched back into GTA only for my pc to freeze, so I shut it down and waited to deal with it in the morning, morning comes around Windows wont even boot, it says there is an issue and needs to restart and just keeps taking me to the same old choose an option to boot my pc, but nothing works. I tried putting the cable into my mobo slot instead, taking my GPU out, running a different monitor but windows wont boot. Linux works fine, but I really don't want to reinstall windows and I tried restoring it but that didn't work either. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Ok, so I am currently using a 30" 720p TV as a monitor (and yes I know this is unacceptable lol) and as such I am currently looking into upgrading to an actual monitor. My choices are a 24" 1080 monitor at 144hz or a 24" 1440 monitor at 60hz. Which should I choose? also I'm running a 960 with an a10-7700k for a cpu, so my frame rate won't be pushing that 144hz limit so I'm kinda leaning toward the 1440 monitor. But I would like some extra advice, thanks in advance!

Hey guys, I want to add multiple different dates and times (now()) in google sheets but every time I change something all the cells refresh with the current date and time. how can I deactivate that refresh and keep the old value in the cell? I use Sheets because I have to access it with a browser. Please help, I couldn´t find a working solution for about 2 hours and I desperately want to have it working. Helge Neumann

Alright so this is in part because I'm looking to upgrade my display but I'm also curious what people think on the topic. For gamers who play faster moving games like many shooters, I hear people emphasize having higher Hz like at 144 Hz if you can get it. Then there's 4k and up on resolution giving a sharper, more realistic image. Granted, you can get a monitor that combines good refresh rates with high resolution. However, what I want to know: Which would you emphasize over the other and why? Would you emphasize that 4k+ resolution or would you emphasize that high Hz in your monitor choice?

Greetings. I've been experiencing some problems with Windows 8.1 Updates (thread here), and thought to use the 'PC' option in the recovery tab of the PC settings menu to solve these problems. However, while it says my PC will be refreshed without affecting my files, it also says that 'Any apps I have downloaded from the internet or installed from CDs will be deleted', and a list of them will be on my desktop. What I don't understand is what it's going to delete and what it's going to keep. Will all my documents and files be there, I'll have to reinstall literally every single program I have? Do programs installed to C/Program Files or C/Program Files x86 get deleted? Or is it referring to Windows 8.1 apps, and not programs? Among other things, I have Steam and a slew of games, Tracktion 4, Sony Movie Studio, and several other programs I absolutely cannot afford to lose. I'm in dire need of assistance, and will be extremely grateful for any. Regards, Aereldor.

I recently bought a G3258 and a gigabyte g1 sniper M5. It's a z87 board and I heard that the haswell refresh cpu's need a bios update to work on this board, however I'm unclear as to whether the g3258 is indeed a haswell refresh. Can anyone clarify this for me?

After watching the wireless charging video, I couldn't help but think that it would be really cool if Logitech just took the g303, with the same exact design and specs, and added the wireless charging plus wireless mouse feature to it (at the same price that it is right now since the 703 is around $30 more expensive right now and the old g303 is, well, old). I have the g302 and really like the shape of it, it's like (not as light as the Abyssus or Final Mouse but light enough), sensor can use a bit of work since it's the old g100 sensor, but otherwise I think it's great. Only posted this here because I remembered that Logitech has the unsolicited submissions policy, which is unfortunate.

Hey! Quick question what is the best way to make your page refresh/update live immediately when a CSS, HTML or JavaScript file changes? I noticed there where some Chrome plugins to do this, even some JS code i believe? Not sure what the most efficient way is Thanks!

I don't know with which update this started happening, but when I wanted to start streaming again this months I noticed that my 240hz monitor will throttle to 60hz when streaming. This is obviously not very amusing if youre used to 144hz and 240hz for years. It only happens when I got OBS on my 2nd monitor open. This seems like a Windows problem from what I gathered online, since Win 10 seems to be too stupid to handle rendering stuff on monitors with different refresh rates. IT USED TO WORK PREVIOUSLY and I don't know what exactly changed happened to change that. Does anyone know how to fix this besides putting OBS on my main monitor or fucking buying a 2nd 240hz

So a few days ago I was trying to record a clip from a replay file in League of Legends, and as soon as I clicked record, the frame froze, and then the screen went black. I turned to computer on and off, and nothing seemed wrong until I noticed the Nvidia Control Panel was missing. I figured I could just uninstall and reinstall the drivers for my GeForce GT 640, so I removed it from the device manager, uninstalled all programs accosiated with Nvidia, and finally went to remove the NVIDIA Corporation folder in the Program Files folder. I was using an admin account, but windows kept telling me I needed permission to view or alter the contents of the folder, which led me to refresh my pc, thinking this would get rid of the folder and give me a fresh installation of windows and save my files. I was very wrong. When the refresh finally finished, the stat button was missing and in the start menu the power button was missing. I was also unable to find the device manager or control panel. When I signed out, the screen went black (but the monitor was still on), and stayed this way. When I turned it on and off I still had the same issue. Any advice? Also I'm using windows 8.1.
