Hi! TL:DR - need advice on building a NAS Context My recording studio in the UK is starting to take off, and over the lockdown period we've had a lot of virtual choirs/orchestras/concerts come in. Naturally, this influx of both audio and video content is starting to take up a LOT of storage. I've got 13TB of total internal and external storage (1TB OS SSD, 1TB project HDD, 11TB external USB 3.0 drives), about 5TB of which remains. While this is likely to last me a good year or so before it's filled up, I do want to find a viable solution both for archiving my old projects safely, and for backing up my project drives/OS drives on a daily basis. My Spec - Mac Pro 5,1 (2x 6-core Intel Xeon, 3.06GHz) - 32GB RAM - Radeon RX580 (8GB) - 1TB OS SSD - 1TB project HDD My Idea Having had about a month to think about this, I've thought of using a NAS to back up everything, and have all files accessible through both a wired 10Gb/s connection, and also remotely as a "personal cloud" kind of thing. I'm thinking of a 40TB RAID 10 setup in the long run, but am open to starting with something a little smaller for now. I've been looking into FreeNAS for running this device, and have also been investigating how to set it up for remote access similar to Dropbox (a recent job paid for a 3TB one year subscription, for which we don't want to continue paying £200/year) so that we can integrate receiving large groups of files from clients. I wanted to see if I could sync a cheaper 100GB subscribed Dropbox folder to this NAS so I could transfer and clear our Dropbox folder to the NAS on a daily basis. I've pasted a link to my PCPartpicker build, which raises another question... ECC memory - yes or no? I've done *some* research on how it works, and am really not fond of the idea of a bit of information changing (eg. in an OS drive), to result in total data loss of a NAS. Budget is a factor here, as you'll be able to tell from my choice in the spec below. Intro My very first PC build. I want one great box next to my TV instead of several good ones. Broke college student. Bang-for-buck was heavily considered. For home recording studio; low noise is a major factor 60 fps gaming ; 1080p (1440p down the road) Some video editing and 3D modeling also Budget ($837) Ryzen 5 1600 ($195) Beast. Totally crushes anything. Ryzen 3 would've been plenty, honestly. Good for long-term though. GTX 1060 3GB ($199) Great value for mid-range card. Will get high-end card eventually. Scythe Mugen 5 ($46) Big, but it fits. Silence and great cooling ASRock AM4 Pro4 MATX ($60) Overclocks. Works fine, but no wifi. Good BIOS once updated. Limited fan inputs. Needed splitter. Probably should've gotten a better one though. Rosewill Capstone 550w ($55) Does its job well. No power issues. Quiet, but not silent compared to other parts. Will get a silent PSU eventually or replace fan. Semi-modular is good (way better than non-modular) I do kind of regret not going full modular. GSkill Aegis 3000 MHz 8GB RAM ($75) 8GB is enough for me, no problems. If I ever need more, I can always buy it. Intel 120 GB SSD ($37) Amazing value. Works like any SSD (really well) 1 TB 2.5" HDD (from old laptop) ($0) Free. Can't complain. Makes some noise. Would've bought External, otherwise. I hope to be SSD only someday. Fractal Design Define C Mini ($67) Heavy, bulky case. Not "mini". Good build quality all around. Clean professional aesthetic. Apple 2007 Wireless Keyboard ($35) Excellent build quality. Holds up. Thin, dense, highly portable. Perfectly responsive and firm keys USB Bluetooth and Wifi Adapters ($12) Mostly reliable. Good price. It's 2017. Why don't all boards have these? Be Quiet! Pure Wings 2 140mm x2 ($23) Great price and build quality Lots of airflow. Inaudible unless ear is next to it. Antec Truequiet 120mm ($10) Good quiet fan with manual settings. Needs molex cable to work (ugh) Noctua Thermal Paste ($5) Cooler came with a tube anyway... Wired Keyboard ($4) You need a wire keyboard to run BIOS. Got at Goodwill. I keep it in my closet. Deepcool 350 RGB LED Kit ($14) Aesthetic, but worth the money. Allows me to monitor my parts. Future Upgrades 1440p IPS 60Hz Monitor Another 8GB RAM Stick Gaming Mouse Noise Test Runs at 25-30 db (40db at most) Not silent, but definitely quiet. Mostly satisfied. Tips for Beginners Watch a full-length building tutorial (not a 5 min one). Know where each cable goes before you build. Disassemble the case at first for more room. Place IO Shield (from inside) before installing motherboard. Install the video card last, so it doesn't obstruct your view. Download Windows update before trying to resolve driver issues. Download an anti-virus ASAP (seriously) My Next Build Several years from now. 15-30 db noise is the goal. Mini ITX. Micro ATX is way too big. Motherboard w/ USB-C, wifi, bluetooth. Windows OS, possibly Hackintosh. Not looking to overkill. Named "Thriller Rig" because I plan to use it with the SMB7 Microphone for recording.

Operating System: Either Windows or Mac is fine. It's not 2007. The gaps between them have mostly been closed. Monitors: 4K is good for the largest real estate, but it would work best with a larger screen and if its mounted to the wall to save desk space (and to increase viewing distance). A dual-1080p monitor setup can work for having a DAW on one screen and other tasks on the other screen. 1440p offers a lot of real estate too, as does having a laptop on the desk too. 1080p worth of real estate is bare minimum, and more than that is preferred. CPU: While Ryzen's computational power commands respect, Intel's integrated graphics means a leaner, cheaper, quiet, energy efficient build. DAW's do require more processing power than MS Office and Web Browsing, but not as much as film editing or streaming, of course. Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5 and 6th/7th gen i5's. Overclocking can't hurt as long as it can be turned off at will. i7 and Ryzen 7 are overkill. Motherboard: As long as it has wifi, a good sound card and capability for numerous USB-3 ports, for audio controllers, it's good. RAM: 8GB minimum. 16GB can be very beneficial but those on a mid-range budget may want to try 8 and see how it works before upgrading. This is not film editing. 32GB is not needed at all. Storage: SSD, of course. It depends how many DAW's you are using. Professional studios may want a large size like 500GB so the samples/midi instruments can be loaded faster. HDD storage is also essential for storing a lot of sound files, but they do make noise. I know there is a feature in Windows to disable them when they're not loading files. Maybe a rubber encasing can silence them. Power Supply: A fanless PSU would be nice but isn't economical. A studio build won't require more than 150-200w of power to begin with, but a PSU with a quiet fan can help. Form Factor: A more compact PC can fit in a desk setup easier, which is why Metis Plus is appealing. Closed case for silence. Sound dampening foam is good. Larger cases can have more air circulation, but it's not like this is a gaming rig. I was a bit unsure which thread to post this one in, networking seems like a good bet. So I'm not overly tech savvy - I can build PC's and understand the basics but this is a one I can't quite figure out. I'm building a new production/ recording studio at the minute, and I want to keep all the machines in a separate room to reduce noise. I'm wondering what the best way is to run displays/ peripheral's from over 20m away. My first thought was networking, but I couldn't find a comprehensive guide on this topic. There will be 3 monitors total in each control room, one of which is 4k, the other two likely to be 1440p. I know it's been done before. People like Junkie XL, Hans Zimmer, and more run similar rigs. But there's no information online on how it all works. Hope there's someone out there that is able to help!

Hey guys, I run a recording studio and I have cameras set up in each room (Control Room, Live Room, Vocal Isolation Rooms, and chill spaces). I want to stream the writing and recording process with bands that come in. I also want watchers to be able to choose which room they want to watch, like in security software...but I don't know if security software is the right way to go. So that they can be watching a guitarist track his guitar in the control room with the engineer, and then switch to the rest of the band playing video games, or arguing about a lyric in the chill room. I'm not sure what the right way to go about setting this up is. I was looking at security systems, but I feel like that wouldn't be appropriate. If anyone can help me, I would REALLY appreciate it. I realize any real solution will probably cost a couple thousand dollars. This is a serious project, and we're trying to go the distance. If anyone has any experience with this, any information would be appreciated.
