Hi all, I have a Lenovo Ideapad with 8gb DDR4 and a 10th gen i5. Pretty decent stuff for gaming. Problem is, it only has Intel HD graphics. I have a beautiful rig with a 2070 Super at home, but it's a pain taking my PC setup with me to college. For some reason, I have seen back and forth information on what kinds of laptops can actually be compatible with an e-GPU. My laptop has a USB-C port, so is that good enough? Does it have to be a certain kind of port? If so, what kind of port do I need to be able to use an external GPU?

Budget (including currency): <500 USD (for the pc itself) Country: Mexico Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: An always-on, probably Linux, server pc hosting all sorts of stuff. Should be able to connect to eGPU for remote heavy lifting. Other details I've got a standing desk, a 2020 Acer Spin, and a Razer Core Chroma. I will be buying a GPU for it as it becomes available. My goal here is to have a no-compromise setup. A good laptop, portable GPU power, and a server PC back at home to take advantage of the Core when it's not with me. I also want the setup to look as clean as posible. I attached a few images of how everything looks right now. Please excuse the bad cable management. Surge protector should be glued/screwed under the desk, and egpu cable should be longer and go trough the arm, so it looks cleaner and it is long enough for the laptop to charge while being used in the bed. I plan to add more monitors down the road, as money becomes available. End game is four arms and three monitors (plus the laptop one). Now, here comes the brainstorming... My first thought was to have a mini PC like the intel NUC, and hold it to a VESA mount behind the laptop arm. This way, when I unplug the laptop I just plug the cable into the NUC, which would be right there, and it's all done. This could also take advantage of the custom cooling I made for the laptop (see pictures), as it would be in close proximity to it. Nevertheless, this would add unnecessary bulk to the laptop arm, making it harder to maneuver, and probably cost some flexibility when expanding. The "server" pc is meant to be fixed, so it could just as well be screwed below the desk. An ideal scenario would be to have some sort of switch that "connects" the core to the laptop whenever its plugged in, but "connects" to the server when it is not. I am not aware of any device that does that. I don't want to need to dig below the desk, or accidentally forget to plug it back every time I leave. So, condensing everything into questions... What is a good and discrete solution for the server pc device? What would be the approach for managing the server/laptop switches?

Hi everyone, I've a Dell XPS 15 9570 with i7-8750h and 16gb of ram (I'm not sure if this matters). I'm planning to buy an eGPU solely for gaming. I've done sone researches and I'm pretty sure about going for the Razer Core X but I'm open to advices on this one too. Anyway, the main question of this post is: what GPU is recommended to pair with my laptop? I was initially thinking of a GTX 1080 or a RTX 2070, but I'm afraid my laptop would bottleneck it and it would be a waste of money. I'm basically looking for the best quality/price ratio where i can get the most out of the GPU. Thanks!

So...This thread was posted in Razer forum about 10 hours ago, but for some reason deleted. Don't know why. I'm about to make my purchase, but something about Razer Core still confuse me, hope I can get some help here. My plan is to use windows in my laptop for some non-Linux task, MS Office, games, etc. And I'm planning to install Ubuntu in a Hyper-V virtual machine, then use a PCI Passthrough feature windows provided to pass my dGPU to Ubuntu VM, so that I can run some GPU compute task(not gonna use it for display). Tutorial about how to use such PCI Passthrough feature can be found here, it's well documented. And it should work just fine if you're using up-to-date Windows 10 Pro(not Home edition), or Server 2016. However, since Razer Core is using some other magic, I'm not sure if the driver of Core will conflict with the PCI Passthrough feature. It would be of great help if someone have Core can do some experiment, and share some results. Thanks very much. Introduction to Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V Discrete Device Assignment.pdf

Hello Peeps, (First off, am I on the right forum?) What would be the best Laptop to buy to couple with an External GPU for the purpose of College work and High FPS (60+ at least) Gaming on Ultra settings @ 4K? What would the External GPU Unit (Razer Core, Alienware Graphics Amplifier, etc) be? For example, the DELL Inspiron 15 @$950 with the i7-7700HQ and the 1050Ti looked like a good option, as does the Alienware series with the GTX 1070. Would you recommend either of these, or are there other better options at the same price range? If I'm going with the Alienware 15, is the Alienware Graphics Amplifier, a recommended buy, to the Razer Core? Do the current External GPU units support the 1080Ti and cards, after? (Optional) Could you elaborate on the reasons behind your choice? Some relevant videos/content on this subject, would be excellent! (Apart from Linus' and Dave Lee's videos) What are some excellent Laptop+External GPU combinations? Some more questions What other overheads/circumstances would you advise taking into account? It appeared from some sites that CPU bottleneck could be an issue, with that in mind, will the current processors (i7-6700HQ being among the most popular) or the processor on the laptop you mention, bottleneck the GTX 1080/1080Ti? Also, what are the pros and cons of linking a Laptop of one Manufacturer with the External GPU unit of another for optimal performance? (Example Alienware with Razer Core) Thanks in advance!

Captain Pepper Linus Tech Forums 1/31/17 Jerry Rigging a Razer Core I've seen it done before, but I've only seen one true DIY version. I wanna know if it can be done without having to purchase something like the Akito Thunder (https://www.amazon.com/Thunder3-Pcie-Expansion-Box-Currently/dp/B01K5Z13I2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485886399&sr=8-1&keywords=akito+node) and I thought no better place to ask than here. I have seen a really sketchy looking one where a guy chopped up an old PC case to do it, but I really wanna see if there's a way to make one that will look better than that.

Hey guys, longtime Linus Tech Tips watcher but this is my first time in the forum so please pardon my inexperience. I built myself a desktop gaming pc in the Fractal Define R4 while I was still in high school but now I'm in university and have been missing pc gaming. I already own a Razer Blade Stealth so I wanted some input as to whether it would be worth it in my case to buy the Razer Core and use the 780ti I have in my desktop whilst I'm at school or if there is a better, more cost effective option. I'm very limited on space (going to school in NYC) so shipping my desktop back and forth is not an option. Also the $100 dollar coupon for the Razer Core has expired for me so it would cost $500. Thanks for the help!

i just came up what a amazing idea, a razer core runs at a 4x pcie 3.0 link, AMD radeon needs a 4x pcie 3.0 link to run crossfire razer core needs a thunderbolt 3 (type c) link the macbook pro 15inch has 4 thunderbold 3.0 (type c) mac needs to run in windows?! for crossfire support?! so in theorie you can run 4x rx480 or 4x a custom r9 fury. if this has been done already please give he a LINK! if you are going to try it, PLEASE LET ME KNOW (total price ca 2800 x 4x 500 (2000) = 4x220 (880) = 5680 usd mac + 4x razercore + 4x rx 480 = AWESOME maybe this can go in the wan show of today?! send to @LinusTech at twitter *YouTube link removed*

Hi everyone in the community! I want to ask if anybody has any idea about a gaming laptop gtx1060+ thats compatible with a thunderbolt 3 external graphics card enclosure (for some future proofing). (Razer Core.Akitio Node.Powercolor Box.*ASUS XG2*MSI GUS*) I currently own an ASUS G751 970M and I plan to buy a new 17 inchgaming laptop, but I wanted it to be with me for quite some time. Razer's 17inch is too much as I can only fork about 2.5k usd for now. Thanks!

Going to Uni, needing an upgrade. So, I sold my old rig and had an extra 980 left over and some storage + files. Should I build a new rig (which has to be mATX or itx for ease of transportation) or deck out my current blade stealth to use in my dorm with an external graphics card dock, NAS, and a display? My budget is around $1000 CAD (700 USD). For a new rig, I already have the graphics card and the storage, and I'm planning on going Ryzen. Which is more suitable and economically viable in the long run? A new separate rig? Or an upgrade to the Stealth to suit dorm room use?

Everytime my razer blade stealth goes to sleep plugged into the razer core the core's fan (not the graphics card inside) will speed up to full and stay that way nonstop for some reason i'm trying to solver e. The graphics card is a nvidia GTX 970 and this doesn't happen when restarting the computer or if the graphics card is not inside at the time. My drivers are all up to date, I didn't overclock, and I've been trying to solve this for months now PLZ HALP. Edit. As long as the core is plugged in and the computer is sleep/shutdown then the fan thing will happen. Don't know how it changed but now its worse.

So pretty soon I'm going to have to swap my current tower PC for something more portable, but I still want to keep playing my library of games. I've settled on either of the new Dell XPS laptops, and while the 15 would give me a dedicated graphics card and an easy solution I'd prefer to take the smaller XPS13 for its portability. Thus I'm considering an external GPU solution, such as the Razer Core or ASUS ROG XG Station 2, running out of the thunderbolt 3 port on the laptop. However after reading various forum posts it seems like the Dell laptops won't play nicely with either of those two options: https://insider.razerzone.com/index.php?threads/anyone-got-the-razer-core-working-with-the-dell-xps-13-9350.15177/ https://egpu.io/forums/pc-setup/dell-xps-15-9560-asus-rog-xg-station-2-a-tragic-love-story/ Can anybody confirm this and tell me why? Would it be possible to use another option (such as perhaps the AkiTio Node?) that doesnt seem to be locked to only for its manufacturer's laptops? Or are these problems now fixed with the new generation of XPS's? Many thanks for any help..

Hi, I actually have a DELL XPS 15 which does have USB-C with Thunderbolt 3 supported. Okay, I want to use a external GPU in this laptop, BUT! the Razer Core is too expensive and there is another option, a GPU dock. But this device use a HDMI to Mini PCI port which does under your laptop on the Wi-FI card slot. I need something more fancy men. So, this is my idea, from the GPU dock goes a HDMI cable to a HDMI to USB-C adaptor, then the USB-C to the USB-C port in my DELL laptop. Would this work? I mean, replace the MINI PCI for a USB-C. I don't know if this is going to work but, it's interesting. PD: I found a USB-C to HDMI adaptor in Amazon that supports Thunderbolt 3, thats great and it's very cheap tho. Link: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Thunderbolt-Compatible-Adapter/dp/B00X4S5C7G/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1476712749&sr=1-5&keywords=usb+c+to+hdmi Hope someone with those resources (LIKE LINUS HUEHUE) can do that test. It would be just amazing spending $100 instead of $500 in the Razer Core.

I bought a Razer Blade Stealth about a year ago for deployment with the idea of also buying a Razer Core when i got back, however, it now appears to be out of stock. Are there any options that don't include buying a whole new system from another brand or am I out of luck until razer decides to restock or come out with something new akin to the Core?

So im thinking of buying the new hp spectre x360, but i do have a concern. I want the 15 inch display, but it comes with an mx150 graphics card. I was thinking about getting an egpu with a much higher graphics card. My issue is that i read somewhere you cant use an egpu on a laptop with a dedicated graphics card. So is there a way to make the laptop integrated rather than dedicated, through the bios or something? Or will there not be any issue depending on which egpu i get? I saw linus reviewing the razer core by plugging it into a razer stealth laptop which has dedicated graphics, so im kinda confused.

I was on youtube and saw a video about this product http://www.gearbest.com/laptop-accessories/pp_229101.html I thought it was extremely interesting, but all the videos I have seen have only shown the after. They didn't do a good review of things like how much performance gains there were and they didn't test different gpus and things like that. I think this would be a fantastic product for LinusTechTips to review on a Holy$hit episode for cheap gaming or something if it actually works well. It would be interesting to see how it goes. Please give it a shot. Sorry if I am breaking any forum rules. Thanks

Apparently someone on Reddit has managed to get the Razer core working on MacOS Sierra using a utility which "patches a kext in Sierra to enable TB3 devices" - solving Linus' complaint from WAN show (Dec 16th). Has anyone else tried this? (link:

I'm helping a friend with an external GPU enclosure for her new Macbook (I know, she got it against my my suggestions). Anyway, we have decided on the Razer core X due to it's availability in Australia and it just is generally nice. However, when looking at GPU's all the documentation from Apple says they only support AMD cards. As far as I am aware the 10 series nVidia cards introduces macOS support. Are we limited to AMD cards? Would an nVidia card still work?
