Microsoft Defender is right now using over 11 gigabytes of RAM (I have 16). It is unfortunately beating Chrome and Firefox put together. Oh and CPU usage is around 30%. I tried turning off every setting under "Virus & threat protection settings". I tried adding Defender's own files, and MsMpEng.exe, to the exclusions. I added DisableAntiSpyware to the registry under Windows Defender, tried setting it to 0 and 1. Nothing is helping, the RAM usage is literally climbing through the roof, to the point where Firefox starts crashing. Is my only solution to use a different antivirus, thereby disabling defender? How can I figure out what is causing it to shoot up? I'm running on Win10 Pro 20H2.

Greetings community, I'm kinda new here and also a newbie in the "PC" world, so pls hear me out. I'm using a laptop, MSI Alpha 15 A3DDK, released on Q4 2019 I think. Next or maybe next NEXT month I wanna upgrade my RAM for a dual channel, but for the time being, I'm trying to reduce my RAM usage for my integrated GPU as I'm using my laptop always on plug so my discrete could perform a lil bit better, so I don't really care about power saving. CPU on my laptop is AMD Ryzen 7 3750H, with Radeon RX Vega 10, consuming 2,1 gigs of RAM with 8 gigs onboard RAM 2666 MHz single channel but read as 2400 MHz (is it fine? why only 2400?) so the available RAM is only 5,9 gigs. Two days ago, I found a tips on the net how to reduce RAM usage from BIOS on the iGPU and tried it. I could reduce iGPU RAM usage as small as 64 MB only and available RAM for 7,9 gigs, and after save and reset, I think there is no problem for a while while using it for gaming or working on light 3d modeling. Then I got greedy and think, how if I disable the iGPU, would the performance goin kinda crazy? And as I tried, my greedy ass got whooped. After save and reset, BAM, the display goin black while the keyboard backlight still lighting up. Hard restart, nothing. Hard restart but make it 15x, still NOTHING. Goosebumps creeping on my neck. Head kinda felt spinning. Hands trembling and armpits got sweaty. "Fck! My only device that I'm using to work and gaming is dead! I fcked up big time!" Confused as fck, of course the net is the first one that I'm reachin to. Net says, just remove the CMOS battery to factory reset. I think ah I'm saved. But then I wonder, how if the CMOS battery under the set inside and I cant find it? Sh*t goin crazy in my head. Then I say fck it, give it to the pro. Driving to my friend's go-to regular pc mechanic. Mechanic says came back tomorrow. Okay, I think I'm saved. Next day, I picked up my laptop. Checking RAM on board, back to 5,9 gigs. Damn! All that crazy stuff just for NOTHIN! So, long story short, I'm still not satisfied. I wanna change it again to 64 MB. But this time, I just wanna ask for input from y'all. Is it fine to change it that much? Or maybe I should tone it down to like 512 MB or 1 gigs only? Also is my 2666 MHz RAM read as 2400 MHz caused by the limitation of my CPU? If I'm gonna upgrade to dual channel, which one should I buy? 2666 or 2400? Thanks! Good day y'all!

I have no clue wtf just happened. I was reading a book when suddenly my PC just blasted the error sound. I look over to see like a 1024x768 resolution with WerFault.exe having stopped working with a huge error. I go to task manager to see what's up, and I've never seen this before, Task Manager told me that my system memory is low and showed that STEAM of all things was using up "76%". I have 8 gigs of RAM. My PC was literally just idle. I then tried starting my browser to see what WerFault.exe even is, but it completely froze up with my hard drive going crazy noisy and the HDD light not flashing, just plain being on for a minute straight before I force reset. WTF happened? Should I be worried? I also recently got a UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION BSOD. I run Windows 10 Home 64-bit.

I noticed today that RAM usage shown in task manager under the processes tab doesn't seem to add up to very much. So I added up the usage from all the processes listed (then realized I was stupid because you can see the total of all of them under the Users tab) and I realized that it's nowhere near accurate. When I go to the performance tab, it informs me that about 4GB of my memory is being used currently, which seems right considering I have a browser and a couple other light programs open, and other monitoring applications back this up. However, all the processes listed add up to about 1600MB as it's listed, or about 1.6GB. Is this a known issue, and perhaps Windows itself is using up memory with parts of the OS it doesn't consider a 'process'? Or should I actually be concerned?

I've heard a lot about how web browsers (specifically Chrome and Firefox) use a LOT of memory. However, when sitting idle, how much to web browsers use the CPU? In other words, does having a web browser open in the background while playing a game affect gaming performance in ways other than eating through RAM?

Some guy on World of tanks was saying a 6 core CPU is a waste that you would need 1tb of ram to use it to its potential. This sounds like BS to me, but i could be wrong. I know that I used the 6 core AMD 1055t with 16gb ram it ran at 100% with a GTX 970 and bottle necked it and didn't come anywhere close to using 8 gb ram. Maybe hes talking about something else.

Hi! First post here! So, recently (for the past 3 to 6 months), my computer RAM usage has been skyrocketing but I can't tell why. In idle state/startup, half of my RAM is used (4-5GB of 8GB). I did deactivate apps in the "Startup" section of task manager and only kept the important stuffs (Steam, Uplay, printer status...). Then, for example, when I download a game, the "Performance" tab in task manager tells me that there's over 90% of my RAM used and system becomes barely usable (mouse pointer going at 3fps). But when I go to the "Processes" tab, the highest RAM usage app uses only 5-10MB (which is Steam or Uplay because I'm downloading a game). Plus, if I do some quick calculation, the RAM usage of the first 10 apps doesn't even add up to 1GB. You can see it in the picture attached (taken on cellphone because can't even take a snapshot). When I play games, it is fine only when I have my game running (In this case, I can see that my game takes 1-2GB of RAM in task manager). If I open up Chrome for example, system goes chaos and mouse pointer moves at 3 fps. Searched online but most of them says the same thing (uncheck startup apps, end apps that you don't use, product placement of RAM management software...). It doesn't help me... I hope someone can sort this out for me, as I don't understand what's going on why my computer. Thank you!! NHL. *Edit: Now my computer won't shut off when I click on "Shut down". The only way I can turn it off is to force shut down by holding the power button.

Hello! I've had this lenovo yoga 720 for about 8 months now, but during christmas this thing started behaving really strange. Long story short, it uses a BUNCH of RAM in idle mode, and it has CPU spikes over 80% for no apparent reason, all which makes my fan noise go through the roof. I can't even open a second tab on chrome without it going full vacuum mode on me. Funny thing is I've never experienced any temperatures over 50 C. It's even embarrasing to use this thing during class. Another thing that might be connected or perhaps someone could have an input on might be why streaming content (on youtube) on 720p makes the cpu usage to above 80%? 480p is barely getting me over 30%. With the fan being as loud as it is, I have to wear headphones to watch it! Wierdly, it does not do this on Netflix for 1080p or other streaming sites. The things I've tried to do are; 1. Chaning the bios settings for the thermal control from "performance" to "silent" which does take it down a notch, but only 10% of what I would like it to do. 2. Installed tab suspender extension for chrome and removed old bloated ones. I've attached a picture of what the idle system looks like. Thanks in advance!

Ok, so I was looking around on my old computer which has 4GB of ram using Windows 10 pro and I noticed on task manager when I literally had two empty tabs open on google chrome it uses like 600mb - 900mb of ram and I was like WTF?! I have no idea why this program uses so much ram but maybe you guys do so...? Anyways thanks for any responses!

As i said in the title, my rig is using 7.7 gb of my 8gb ram while streaming 360p videos and browsing ltt (3 tabs in total).I´ve ran windows defender and i have 0 viruses (definitions where updated about 2 day ago).Does anyone know why it is behaving so wired? It does that pretty often ... about 2 hours afer reboot it hits the ram cap.

I'm having this battle the whole day, tried several things and nothing helped. So the problem is that after some time my pc goes retard mode. The mouse, every program starts not to respond. And I'm forced to restart the pc and then everything is fine. I ran malware bytes full scan on my ssd and hdd, ran full scan with bitdefender and yes they found some issues and some malware but as you can see didn't fix a thing. ntoskrnl.exe is the main suspect I guess its always on the top of my task manager. I'm out of ideas please for god sake help! I has come to this point that I'm writting this topic on my phone and taking pitcures of my screen with it...

I don't know if this is a specific problem to me, but anyways I have a problem where windows just outright forecloses my games when I have other programs open, using ram. This happened on windows 7 as well. I currently have 8GB of ram installed in a dual channel configuration. I have windows 10 on my 120GB ssd with hibernation disabled and a page file of 512MB. Note: If I disable the page file, windows creates a huge one anyways... I always have "a few" chrome tabs open when doing anything else on my computer, ram usage mostly hovering around 50% usage. I can start up a game like csgo and play fine, ram usage around 60%. Windows decides to abruptly close games like Shadow of Mordor and The Witcher 3 when ram usage only spikes to around 75% usage. WTF? I have since used chrome session manager to save all my tabs and close them to run a game, and then load them all back up when done. Kind of annoying. Although with the recent Newegg ram sales, I could pick up another 8GB kit of ram and have 16GB. Think windows would still do the same shit?

Hello guys, I want to upgrade my old system to Windows 8.1 from Windows 7... since it is old system (Core2Duo,9800GT,4GB DDR2) will it be better? I was searching all over the internet and most people say windows 8.1 is ligther on resources (less ram usage) etc. while some strongly dissagree on that. Which of that is true? Also I was looking drivers for my mobo and I've noticed there are no drivers for On-Board LAN... what does it actually mean? Will I be able to have internet connection on windows 8.1 (RJ45 not wireless) I ran Windows Upgrade Assistant and only issue it found was this: Secure Boot isn't compatible with your PC Your PC's firmware doesn't support Secure Boot so you won't be able to use it in Windows 8.1. Which I don't mind.

Hello! Currently I've been noticing a higher usage of my RAM than I used to have before. I have 8GB of normal Kingston ram(4x2GB). Two of the Dimms are old(maybe 5+years old) and the other 2 dimms are less than a year old. When I installed the new dimms my ram usage playing league of legends and with the usual two chrome tabs opened was around 2-3GB. Now I've noticed an increase of that amount to 4-5GB. I havent changed my ways of playing and I havent been opening more tabs/playing several games at the same time. This brings me to two questions: Can RAM get slower over time(per example the 2 old dimms). And if so, swapping only the two old dimms by new ones will decrease ram usage? Thank you

So, I recently upgraded my PC and I have been having two issues with what I assume is my motherboard. My rig currently has an ASRock Fatal1ty H97 Killer motherboard, 8GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM (I am unsure of it's speed), a Nvidia GTX670 and an intel Core i7 4790K running at 4GHz. I am running Windows 8.1. After gaming for one or two hours, or watching videos for a while my PC slows down to an almost unusable state. I haven't recorded temperatures of this, but my RAM and HDD usage spikes to 98%-100%. As I said, I have no idea what is causing this. I can recreate this issue in order to record anything that may be needed. On to my other issue, this is probably me just being an idiot and missing something completely. But on my old setup, I went into my BIOS and turned on integrated graphics to use another monitor, for watching movies or having chat open on, running from my motherboard as well as a main monitor to do things such as gaming. As my other screen is just a plain old television it is not detected by my graphics card but it can run from my motherboard when my other screen is unplugged. Any idea how I could go about fixing either of these? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

So lately ive been getting crazy fps jumps in both single player and multiplayer, so whilst in a match i alt tabbed to task manager, and saw that RAM usage was 3.28 GB out of 4GB. Is this causing the game to lag, and give these fps spikes??? other specs are: EVGA GTX 660 SC, and FX-6300 thanks

Hey i was wondering if anyone could help me out? I Just build my first ever gaming pc (amd fx 6300, R9 390 sapphire, 16 gb hyperx ddr3, crucial 120 gb ssd, cx750m psu, and corsair h60 watercolor inn a Cooler Master n200 case. The big question is I render some league of legends videos on my computer with Sony movie studio platinum 13 and am wondering how to decrease render times by allocating more ram specifically to this program. I have 16 gb of ram and currently when rendering in 1080 it shows only 2 gb out of 16 gb for ram usage. So i was thinking if I increased the ram available for this program render times could decrease? And second off, is there some way to dedicate more of my graphics card during rendering to help speed up the render time. I do use open CL with my r9 390, and just wondering if theirs some way I could boost this? Thanks for any help!
