Budget (including currency): $50? Country: United States Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: everything Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): n/a Currently working on upgrading from 7th gen to 13th gen Intel, I have everything planned out and I think it looks super clean (founders edition 4070 looks a tad out of place and small lol) So, I have this Asus M.2 PCIE 4th gen adapter, and it matches the board nice, except for the bare black PCB on the back side, under my GPU. Imo, it looks very bland. I wanted to know if anyone had any opinions on it, I was looking into if it would be safe to paint the PCB white, with safety precautions for the connections on the back, or if maybe I could aquire a brushed aluminum backplate to match everything else? Let me know what you think. (Side note. I use the adapter to make a M.2 raid 0 array from used 256gb drives that are in good running condition at work (I work as on site IT support))

Little bit of background I am in the process of building a new computer I wanted to try something new by using a RAID 5 setup, but, I am running into some problems for the most part I think I understand how to set it all up through bios but I am having issues figuring out what RAID card to get that best fits my needs been searching around on here for some answers and its kinda all over the place so I figured maybe this is a case by case sort of problem so ill list out what I have so far. First RAID 1/0/10 are not options I don't want to do them even though I understand they are simpler and require less work, I am pushing my self to do a RAID 5 setup. OS: Win 10 Drives: 6x Kingston 120GB A400 SSDs Type of RAID Card: PCIE x8 (no nvme/m.2 pcie) Don't think the rest of the computer matters at this point really just looking for information on what raid card to get; - what's the difference between Controllers and HBA controllers - is there really a need to go full controller over adaptor (maybe this isn't even the right question) - What performance hits will I take going with a lesser brand then over the industry standard brands (LSI vs Intel) - is there any other specifics about raid cards I should consider before buying one that I haven't covered. - what if any software do I need to manage my RAID 5 setup such as in the case if I lose a drive do I need software to rebuild the array. - should I have a raid card with a battery to improve redundancy or is this too cost prohibitive for typical home use. - what exactly is RAID "code" (looks like it has something to do with the algorithm that controls which data goes on what drive but im not 100% sure) and does it even matter for what I am trying to do? - when buying a raid card is ideal to buy 2 of the same card incase one craps out? (see a lot of people ask this question no real answer) - when buying a RAID card is buying used (ebay) considered a bad idea (mostly asking in terms of saving money if possible if I dont need to spend upward of 2000$ that would be nice but if its a must its a must) any help is appreciated thank you very much. edit: been adding some more questions as I am looking for the answers so you may want to refresh every so often if you are considering helping.

raid controller How to find a good raid card?
ZachTheDoggo posted a topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Hello, I have a question on how to find a perfect Raid Card for my operations. My server that i'm currently looking to build has a PCIE x8 3.0 interface. From what I can assume with Raid Cards, the two things I should be looking for is high cache value and PCIE Bandwidth. So far, I researched a PCIE x8 3.0 Connection at 8GB a second, while drives like SATA and SAS are usually 12 to 6Gbit a second. I'm going to use an external SAS Raid card so I can utilize DAS interfaces for a total of 80 Drives being daisychained together via the SAS Connection. So theoretically I wouldn't the Raid Controller wouldn't be a bottleneck since im choosing a speedier interface than PCIE 2.0 and SATA drives cannot realistically meet that 6Gbit per drive, rather than multiple drives. Atleast in my head this makes sense. ^ If my question isn't clear in short: What would be the bottleneck the RoC (Raid Controller), Drives, PciE Interface? My Raid Card i'm looking at is (https://a.co/d/i7dA0sF) Thank you -
So my motherboard won't post with a Dell Perc H700 raid controller installed in it. I know for a fact the controller is good, the pcie slots are good, and the board posts with 2 gpus. I have tried resetting the cmos, different pcie slots for both gpu and controller, nothing seems to do anything because as soon as the raid card is installed, when I turn the system on every fan spins, there is no beep and the monitor stays asleep, num-lock doesn't work either, it's pretty much playing dead. The board has the latest bios(2101), and the controller has the latest firmware as well(12.10.7). Any ideas to make it function?

I Just received a Avamar ADS Gen 3 Server. I want to set it up with Nas4Free or FreeNas and am able to install and use the GUI like normal but am unable to add the Hard drives Separately. It shows up as one disk with no stats or Information. The Raid controller is a Dell PERC 6I PCI-E Controller and I have 6 1TB Drives. I really want to set this up as soon as I can and have very little free time to work on this. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Hi. Looking for a RAID controller that supports two M.2 PCIe SSDs which would also allow me to configure the two SSDs in RAID 0. My motherboard comes with a M.2 slot but you cannot use RAID with it. I am aware this is completely stupid that I am chasing for this insane SSD configuration, but I want to anyway. SSD: Samsung 960 Pro 512GB x2.

I am building a storage server soon to hold about 40TB of storage, I need ecc ram and would like it to be a good dedicated storage server. Also if you have any advice on RAID controllers that are 8 ports then that would be great, the hard drives i am using are the iron wolf pro 10tb drives with one extra for redundency. I am also looking to have an ssd cache but am still undecided whether to go m.2 and less storage capacity or pcie and less storage or the most storage but slower performance with sata interface (i know this is a rough description. There are more elements). If there are any good cheap rack mount server chassis that would also help.(2u-4u).

I am looking to expand my File/Media server. I already have 16 4TB drives but i am running out of space. I was looking to move up to a 24 bay server rack. I was told it is possible to move my 16 drive to the new server that has a new RAID card. Can anyone give me any advice as i really dont want to loose all my files and folders Also could you recommend any relayable RAID controllers for 24 disk with a UPS if possible

I am looking at using an Old ARECA Arc-1680IX-24 for my Ryzen Desktop Machine I use for Work as I do data salvaging and Large Data Pulls form Failed Arrays and also Work on Big Data and am looking for expandability past the 6 Onboard SATA Drives built on my X370 Asrock updated to support Ryzen 3K series CPU's motherboard. I want something that can support all the way to RAID-60 Configurations as I deal with those types of arrays on a Daily Basis. If anyone has any knowledge or a well built compatibility list with tested or even possibly untested RAID cards using PCI-E 2.0 or 3.0 x8 cards i would greatly appreciate it.

So I resently got a new Server (Dell Poweredge R510) and im trying to install the raid card driver after I installed FreeNAS to a USB stick which is Internal on the motherboard. Due to not having the driver, FreeNAS is unable to detect any drives connected to said Raid Card. If anyone knows how to help that would be great. Thanks Server Specs: Dell PowerEdge R510 Intel Xeon E5640 (Just untill I get some new CPU's) 8GB DDR3 ECC (Testing with ram I knew worked) PERC H700 Raid Controller with 1GB cache. So i own a dell power edge t610, i upgraded the raid controller, when i was testing the file transfers first everything seemed to work perfectly, i transferred 90GB of files to 4 different drives as my old controller was giving me issues. i had no issues, so i powered off my server, put it back in my room and started it up, left it on for a few hours before i went to work on it, well i was backing up my files to my backup drive and next thing you know it, my server froze and reboots the new controller i installed is a perc H700 so i am going down the list and running out of options here and hope a new OS install will fix this issue but i do not feel like to reconfigure everything again as this took me days to get everything set up im running windows server 2012 r2 i have done a clean boot, update firmware driver to the raid card, there is no one on my server, server is up to date on updates, the bios has been updated, still i faced this issue. it worked before no problems and now this, any idea what it can be or any ideas i can use to fix this server before i just reinstall the OS, please help and thank you server Specs Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard 2 CPUs xeon 4 core X5550 32GB DDR3 RAM 1 146GB HDD 2 1TB HDD 2 4TB HDD

I have some dreams but I am not well versed in raid or nas to properly wrap my brain around what I should do. I have a Antec DF-85 Black Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case which has a huge capacity of holding drives. What I want to suggest doesn't seem practical but its definitely getting necessary as my moms computer went down and luckily i was able to recover files but I want to take drive images nightly and save offsite at my place. I am looking to possibly do an 8 1tb raid 6 which i believe gives me 6 tb of usable data. giving myself hopefully faster rebuild times for a drive failure. I also want to have either a nas just built into the backup raid or separate and have 2 raids... I do not know enough to figure out which option would be best in that scenario. Let me first say that I am not looking for the fastest and most expensive way to do this. Ideally I would buy a server motherboard and hook it all up right, but the data I am saving is computer images and personal data (pictures, movies, documents) to free up the hdd on main computers to not be bogged down with all that data. I do also have that data backed up on onedrive and google drive and the free is enough for that data so I have data covered but what I really really! want is for my moms cop to crash and I can just load an image and get her up and going again... Please for those of you still reading if you could advise me with what you think would be best... at the moment I dont have a lot of $ but my personal comp runs just fine and I built it (yes a while ago) but for gaming in mind so I have 2 gpus and 16gb of ram (yes ddr2 non ecc) so optimally i know ppl are going to say no you need to upgrade... but if its performance I am not housing a video media archive (just yet) so backups and data is just what important and I haven yet but i can water cool with a triple fan on top... this rig has the setup for great air flow and I have a 6 fan controller to controll speeds and fine tune the noise (yes I know it will be noisy but its backups and data... shouldn't be bustling all the time. Lastly my CPU I cannot really remember the size but I think its a 3. something ghz 6 core or 8 I can remember Thank You for your time.

I’m building a new computer soon. One of my main focuses is reliability and security of stored data. I plan a having 2 8TB WD Red drives in a Raid 1 array for file storage. The Raid array will not be my boot drive. I want to use BitLocker on my Raid array but I understand I will need a hardware Raid controller card because BitLocker doesn’t work with software Raid. I will be running Windows 10 Pro on a MSI Z370 PC PRO motherboard (2 x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots [supports x16/x4 mode], 3 x PCIe 3.0 x1 slots, and 1 x PCI slot). What Hardware Raid controller card should I purchase that won’t create a real bottle neck and won’t destroy my budget? Please advise.

So this is my current, future-build parts list: PC Parts Picker List I am really interested in trying to set up an m.2 RAID array (just because and to see if it is possible). But from what I have read, there seem to be a lot of issues surrounding such arrays, the biggest being: X99 MOBO's (which I want to use for the 6850k) only have a single, native m.2 slot, but support 40 lane CPU's. Z170 MOBO's have dual on-board m.2 slots, but only support 28 lane CPU's (6700k), which means no dual GPU setups without lane throttling. Correct me if I'm wrong on this. An Asus Hyper m.2 Adapter in a PCIe slot is possible, but apparently you can't boot from it, which limits the user to a Windows software RAID. There could be possible CPU or MOBO performance ceilings / bottlenecks for the new, super fast Samsung 960 Pro's (each of which hits 3.5Gb/s individually). Not too sure about the specifics of this point or the upper limits of 6850k's or x99's, but I do worry about it rendering the entire array useless. But then I got to looking around the interwebs, and stumbled across this very interesting 2x M.2 NGFF SSD RAID Controller Card that claims to support dual onboard m.2's in a single PCIe x4 slot. Possible work-around for some of the above issues? Question: is this the magic bullet that will finally allow an easy m.2 hardware boot RAID on an X99, or is there some kind of catch or drawback or limitation to it? Seems almost to the level of "too good to be true."

I've attached pictures of my raid controller bios, device manager, computer management, and my computer, as well as a picture of the physical computer itself. Essentially the issue I am having is that the raid 10 set i configured is not showing up. All 4 drives are showing up in the raid controller bios and show no errors or conflicts. The controller itself shows up in device manager. All cables in the system are secure. All drivers are up to date. Windows is up to date. On rare occasions when starting the computer, the raid set appears fine and i can browse/move files around. It then disappears again after a few minutes and any programs that run off that crash immediately. Usually however, it does not show up at all. Help? Suggestions? Thanks in advance, Ken

Hi LTT Community, So I happen to have 4 - Seagate 2T NAS HDD (ST2000VN000) drives that I originally purchased for a Buffalo NAS build, but I ended up selling the Buffalo before I had time to really utilize the system. So now I'm wondering what I should do with these drives. I would like to have a large and slightly redundant storage drive available to throw media and documents onto so that I have more room on my main SSD drive that I'm using for boot and some games. I'm thinking 1 of 2 options: 1) Thow the drives in my gaming rig and utilize the motherboard raid or a controller to build a RAID 10 array. I'm not really looking for any more exotic raid setup than 10 (say 5 or 6) and I'd purely be purchasing a raid controller in the event my motherboard coughs up a lung. 2) Return to the previous intention of settuping a NAS box by buying a Synology DS411. I got a chance to play around with the Buffalo setup, but was a little underwhelmed with the software, which is why I'm attracted to Synology. I'm somewhat of a power user and would normally elect to build my own or try FreeNAS, but I'm also incredibly lazy and just kind of want something that works out of the box. So the features that would come with the NAS setup, like apps, media serving, and remote access to files would be nice, but I'm not sure I really want to shell out that kind of money when my real concern is just have a decent bit of redundancy for my media. Please let me know what you think. If option 1, let me know if you think the raid controller is worth it or the specific one I linked appropriate. Thanks LTT Community!!! New machine I'm planning is in need of storage. I plan on running the OS on an 850 Samsung drive. The machine is going to be used for video/audio editing and gaming, so I'd like to know what Raid array I should use and some tricks/tips for a "New to Raid" guy. By new to Raid I mean I've just never assembled/setup before. Here is the plan for the PC I'm building http://pcpartpicker.com/user/zelgiusthebrave/saved/KZ2Zxr I only have 1 SSD and 2 WD Reds listed, but if needed (such as if I go for Raid 6 or 10 or just want better storage etc etc) I can add more. After watching the TechQuicky Raid 0,1,5,6,10 videos, I need suggestions on what to use, and I also need suggestions on Raid Controllers, as I've never used one and would like to know whats best, what will work, and how to use them. If just given links to other threads with this information is all I get in replies that is fine. Thanks in advance.

While building my silent rig, with chosen silent components I was satisfied with the result. However my ideals got bigger and I wanted to instal a LSI MegaRAID SAS 9265-8i harddisk controller card to take care of my harddisks. I ended up attaching more and more fans to the system to keep the card from frying. At this moment my Fractal Design Define R4 is populated with 5 Aerocool DS140 (Blue) fans running at maxium speed, plus an additional RAM-Cooler of Kingston which is directly blowing air on the LSI chip to keep it's chip 51 degrees Celcius (124F). I understand that these kind of RAID-Cards originaly are used in Enterprise servers where there is a lot of airflow cooling and I have tried recommended 'silent' fans such as the famous Noctua's. However in this envoirement the Aerocool DS140 Blue's look cooler, but are just as hot and noisey as the Noctua's. I realy dont give a fungus about my CPU or GPU or PSU temps, they manage just fine and I can replace them if needed. But loosing the expensive RAID controller would be a hell for me but the noise this solution produces is not acceptable. If anyone know how I am able to cool this more quietly, I would be a happy man

I have a old system which i am planning to convert into a home server/cloud. I am planning to have 4x4TB in the system initially. But in the future i am planning to add additional drive into the raid array (up to 8+ drives). which raid(s) out there in the market has out of box feature like that. Also I am not planning to break the bank. Some thing around 300 - 400 dollar I am willing to invest.

Hey. I hope that someone here on this forum can help a follower of Linus on YouTube. I am working on a home server project. It should primarily be used for storage (Backup), DLNA (Plex / Media Server), Private cloud services and web hosting. It may happen that it also will be used for game hosting. (Minecraft, Teamspeak and CS: GO.) My question is, what components should I go out and throw money at? I've decided that the cabinet should have space to six hard drives for storage, and an SSD for the operating system (Windows Server 2012). The cabinet I looked at the Fractal Design Node 304, think looks very nice next to a small home server. The processor I have been thinking about a Xeon E3-V3. But the RAID controller, motherboard and RAM should I take this? Hey. I hope that someone here on the forum can help a follower of Linus on YouTube. I am working on a home server project. Lets say I have 2 drives in a RAID 1 array, and one of the drives and the raid controller dies. Would I be able to recover all of my data from the raid array by taking the drive that is still working from that computer and simply connecting it to a different computer and accessing it in an operating system environment? The reason I'm unsure about this is because I know that with more complex levels of RAID, the raid controller dying means the data wont be accessible by just plugging all those drives into a different PC, however due to the nature of RAID 1 (it being just a mirror) I don't see how this would be an issue. Thanks

Hi guys and gals, I'm planning to build a RAID 5 array and I am halfway down the track with parts, however I am a bit stuck on what kind of RAID controller card to go with. One that is affordable that is >.< Just for background info, the array will be 3x 4TB drives to start with, possibly expanding in the future. I have read quite a few reviews which mostly mention LSI being one of the best in the business, however they are very hard to snag for a low price. Also Areca are very renowned by most reviews I have seen. I am also considering Adaptec, however I have seen that their performance can degrade quite significantly over their life. Then again, I don't really know what factors contribute to this degrading either. Any who.... I am really aiming to score a card for less than $350, new or second hand doesn't bother me. I have seen this card listed on ebay for about $150 in working condition, second hand; however I thought that I would open this up for debate before I commit to buying any card. http://globalsp.ts.fujitsu.com/dmsp/Publications/public/ds-py-raid-56-6G-D2616.pdf I am interested in the fact that the card is based on LSI, or would this not really correlate to any higher performance/quality? Looks similar to the LSI 9260 8i, but is it capable of a similar performance? Also, is there any advantage to having an upgradable cache either? Thanks in advance (:

Hello to all the storage gurus, I am in the planning stage for my first home server build (yay) and have run into the following roadblock: (I should also ad that I'm in the UK so UK price suggestions would be preferred.) The motherboard I am planning on using (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-am1i-a-am1-s-am1-ddr3-sata-iii-6gb-s-pcie-20-(x4)-vga-dvi-d-hdmi-mini-itx) only features 2 SATAports since it is a value board (I intend on using an AMD AM1 CPU http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-athlon-5350-kabini-quad-core-am1-205ghz-2mb-25w-retail to run FreeNAS, don't know if it will be enough). So now I need to find a PCI-e SATA controller which will allow me to connect an additional 4 SATA drive at minimum (6 would be optimal). I have found this so far: http://www.amazon.co.uk/HighPoint-RocketRAID-2640X4SGL-PCI-Express-Controller/dp/B004U5TZJ8 but I have been reading reviews and apparently there is bad driver support for FreeBSD (which is what I think FreeNAS is based on from what I've heard). Ideally I would like to end up with a storage controller which costs around £100. Also if you have any input as to my CPU and Motherboard choice, those are welcome too. Regards, Llama

What is the difference between the two raid controller

Hi, I like to know about wich Raid controller card is the best for SSD's. I'm looking for a Raid card that is optimised for running multiple SSD's in Raid 0. A card that are pcie gen 3 x16 or pcie gen 3 x8, have 24 or 32 sata III ports and have trim support. I'm also looking for an SSd that is perfect for raid. A very reliable SSD with very good garbage collection and with a lot of storage.
