Hey i recently bought an 8-bay 2.5 inch hot swap bay for sata and sas drives. https://www.icydock.com/goods.php?id=267 It has 2 SFF-8643 connectors on it and i am not sure wether i can use an 8x 8087 sas controller card with adapter cables since most sources use the cables to adapt 8643 to 8087 and not the other way around. It would be a big price differnce if i could just get the 8087 controller as it would save me over 70€. If someone tell me if i can adapt it like this i would be happy since i buy all parts used, so i can't return them if it doesn't work

Last summer I upgraded my processor from a 4790 to an 11700k, this of course involved swapping motherboard and ram, it is the motherboard though that troubles me, I'm talking about the Gigabyte z590 UD AC. There are 2 main issues with it which I still don't know how to fix, one I had ever since I installed it and the other popped up just today, let's start with the first. One of the fans in my system has an extremely strange problem where it just ramps up and ramps down its speed very frequently, almost soundiung like and ambulance siren, the motherboard control doesn't seem to be working properly for that fan alone, I already tried everything including flattening down the fan curve to 0 but it would still ramp up to maximum speed and then back to 0 every second, it's not a problem while I'm booted in windows as I use Fan Control to set up custom curves for both the cpu and the graphics card but everytime that I turn on, shut down or wake from sleep my pc that single fan starts wailing in the most annoying way possible, which leads us to the second issue, trying to solve the fan speed problem today I updated the bios which I didn't know was so outdated, version F2 updated all the way to version F7b, unfortunately the fan keeps doing its... thing, while for some reason some of my drives are no longer showing within the bios, let explain, I have 2 "interesting" pieces of hardware in my pc, one being a plextor m6e ssd, that I use as a secondary game drive, which has a special controller that requires initialization during post, this translates in, usually, a splash screen with the plextor logo after the gigabyte logo, the other is a raid card which I use to drive 4 swappable drives, both the plextor and the drives connected to the raid card no longer show in the bios (on windows they show) which is an issue as one of the drives connected to the raid card has my fedora installation and now I can no longer boot from it as it is not present in the bios setup, to sum up the second issue, it seems that both of those devices whice require some sort of initialization during post no longer show splash screens of their own and are no longer showing whitin the bios, I repeat IN THE BIOS, on windows they work just fine. I have no idea how to solve these issues, I'm quiet confident in the second being solvable with a setting somewhere I don't know about but the first I don't know if it's fixable. Thanks to everyone in advance for your support, Davide.

I have an old Dell R710 which I recently upgraded and turned into my NAS using TrueNAS Core, however before that it was running Ubuntu on 3 SSD's. I only had a RAID card but didn't want to use hardware RAID so I had to make a virtual drive that was only one physical drive and pass those through to Ubuntu, not a great solution but it was all I could do at the time. I did backup a bunch of files, like my old Minecraft server, but my dumbass accidently wiped the flash drive everything was backed up to. I would like to get that MC server back now and I have the original SSD's with all the data, I just don't know how to recover that data without basically yanking out all the HDD's in the server and setting my old config back up. I did try booting into Ubuntu with my old laptop and attaching the SSD's with a USB drive cage but the partitions show up as some, likely proprietary, Dell RAID partition. It's no big deal to power down my server and get the old config back up and running then just copy everything to my flash drive again, but I'd rather do it another way that's slightly easier if I can.

I want to use an HYPER M.2 X16 GEN 4 CARD with my MSI X570 Gaming Plus motherboard. I believe my motherboard does NOT support pcie bifurcation. If I want to see all 4 nvme drives on the card can I use the main x16 slot of the motherboard? Will this allow me to see/use all 4 SSDs in the Hyper M.2 Card? Or does my motherboard NEED to support pcie bifurcation? My plan is to have all 4 SSDs in Raid0. Currently my x16 slot is used for my Plex transcoding GPU with a Quadro P1000. If I put that into my x4 slot, I imagine this wouldn't limit bandwidth for transcoding too much? This would turn the GPU from x16 down to x4 lanes. Thanks,

I have an lsi raid card that I was trying to flash into IT mode to use as an HBA card. During the flashing process my machine restarted. When I got back into the machine I tried to load the firmware on but now the card does not show up. Did I brick the card?

Hello everybody. I`m looking to raid a few WD reds 3 TB drives for back up. Mainly photos and videos with my daughter. So as you have already guessed, these are important. I have been eyeballing a few raid cards on Newegg but as I have no prior experience with these, I`m not really sure what I`m looking at. My main concern is that, all though some of the raid cards have similar specs, the prices vary drastically - sometimes twice the price - and I can`t understand why. So, as I was saying, I was looking at some LSI Raid cards like the 9207-8i and similar. I`ve seen a few similar versions. I`m planning on fitting it in a Be Quiet Dark Base 900, fully rigged with fans - 4 intake + PSU and 3 exhaust. Also got a Noctua NH-D15 on a 4790K and an MSI 1070 Gaming X. Have no issues with cooling I think. Someone worked with these and can recommend something reliable? Also, is HBA important in any way? I`m not sure what it means. And btw, I already have 2 x 3 TB Red drives. Would you recommend fitting them in RAID 1 or get a few extra and put them in RAID 5? Thank you. V.

So I just purchased a new NIC that uses PCIe 4x however I only have a 16x and dual 1x Slots on my board. Also the NIC has Quad Gbit ports that will be teamed. Obviously it has the 4x connector because it needs it for full saturation however it will likely only see up to a single 2Gbit client hitting it at a time... at worst 3 Gbit Clients. A PCIe 8x RAID Card will be in the 16x slot. How much of a bottleneck/performance hit would I see? Will 4Gbit speeds even be bottlenecked by the 1x PCIe? (Its also probably PCIe 1.0 or 2.0)

Hi Guys and girls. Im looking for some feedback on my future setup. I looking for a unRAID setup. unRAID should be used for media server (Plex, mostly local streams or direct streams), and my personal Windows installation for study and games. Im not that good to raid controllers, and not that experienced with unRAID. So Im also looking for some help to this. I'm looking at LSI 9200-8i on eBay but I don't know if it will run with unraid without problems. I currently have a DS1515 + which contains four WD RED disks. That setup will no longer be used and will therefore move the four disks to unRAID. In addition, I want to move my SSD hard drives from current computer to cache disks in unRAID and buy a NVMe disk for my Windows installation. The hardware so far is: Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B450-E CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X GPU: ASUS GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER STRIX RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3200 32GB SCREEN: ASUS 27" Skærm ROG SWIFT PG279Q PSU: BeQuiet Dark Power Pro 11 (1000W) CASE: Corsair Obsidian 750D HDD/SSD: SSD #1: Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD M.2 2280 - 500GB (My thoughts are that it should be dedicated to Windows) SSD #2: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB (Cache drive) SSD #3: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB (Cache drive) HDD #1: WD Red 4TB (To shared folders) HDD #2: WD Red 4TB (To shared folders) HDD #3: WD Red 4TB (To shared folders) HDD #4: WD RED 4TB (Parity)

Hello, I am building a web server for deployment at my own house, I have a line run specifically for this purpose which was cheaper than a datacenter's rental fee and shared speed. I've decided to go with the following list of part's: (Prices are Newegg, I can only use my line of credit.) ASRock Tachi x370 (170$) AMD 1800x (239$) -- The 1700x was 10$ more! NXZT H440 Midtower Case (110$) DDR4-3000 16GB Memory from a QVL (i'll overclock the RAM) EVGA 500w Power Supply (Modular) **IF Required RX 570 Video Card 1TB Crucial SSD for OS (Will Run CentOS 7) Now when it comes to hard drives, I have a choice, 4x4TB Toshiba Enterprise Hard Drives, or wait for a deal on 6TB HGSTs and up. I won't use Seagate I've just had to much bad luck with them even their new Ironwolf Pro's I've had to send 3 back after a week of use because drives started disappearing and re-appearing in the BIOS on reboot's I ran Seatools and they failed SMART and had bad sectors so I'm not going to even deal with them. I'll stick with what I know works and what I like and can afford Now I got 3 HGSTs 6TB's on sale about six weeks ago and I plan to add 4 more if they do go on sale, however, I have six of these 4TB Toshiba Enterprises which are 94$ a lot better than the 6TB's price wise and warranty wise. What RAID card would you recommend for drives 6TB+ because for all I know I might put nothing but 12TB's in it and expand it out as time goes buy. I don't plan to put all the drives in at once. When it comes to RAID level's I want to do a RAID 5. 5E, I'll be running ffmpeg a lot due to video compression/conversion for mobile to 260p/360p/480p/640p/720p/1080p and 2160p. I do so many of these because not everyone can yet fully watch a video in as fast speeds. What would be the best card, and affordable I'm looking to spend no more than 150-200$ on it. I'm on a limited budget for this site so i'm taking drives from computers are replacing them with other older drives I had. Also I can only get this card through Newegg. I'm sorry but that's where my line of credit is. Thank you for any help you may provide. Please do not ask me why I chose the CPU/Board/RAM/Case/PSU I have my reasons.

I just got a Dell PowerEdge R710 that has a PERC 6i raid card in it. I'm trying to run Unraid and I noticed that the raid card doesn't support JBOD, which is needed for Unraid. Will this raid card work in the R710? I found all of the cabling for it, just not sure if it would boot and run correctly. https://www.ebay.com/itm/UNRAID-IT-Mode-LSI-9210-8i-SAS-SATA-8-port-PCI-E-6Gb-s-Controller-Card-FREENAS/142716276926?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I have been using my X99 board and Intel's rapid storage technology to run my seagate ironwolfs in a raid 1 for a while now but would like to get a decent raid card so that if the cmos gets cleared my raid array isn't forgotten. I will likely not be using anything more than 6 drives for the foreseeable future. I'm looking for one that isn't too expensive as I am a poor college student. When it comes to Raid cards I'm pretty much a noob so please help.

Hey LTT community, My college recently got a new supercomputer and I happened to get two nodes from the old one for free! Yay new NAS for free! It has a 3WARE 9550sx-12si 12 sata port raid controller. After two hours of google searching and website surfing I can't find any documentation regarding this raid card to walk me through how to change the raid settings. It's currently running raid 5 on 8 1tb drives and raid 1 on 2 320gb drives and I would like to change it to raid 5 on 7 1tb drives.

So basically I decided to learn what the heck servers and nases are because I've always been curious and kinda wanted my own server for my own and my family's data. So I watched some videos about it and it's pretty interesting but there are a lot of things I want to know and can't find out, so I'm wondering if you guys could help me. Feel free to answer as many as you want, the more the better Questions: What's the difference between a server and a NAS How I do make a list for a Server or NAS, I know it's similar to a PC but there are differences (I already know how to build PCs) What is the purpose of a Raid card Where do I get media for my own online Server or NAS If I put 4 4TB drives into Raid 1 0 will I only have 8TB of usable space And anymore tips you guys have I know I should try to do a little more research before asking for help but I fell in the same problem when I was trying to do watercooling research and I think that if you guys help point me in the right direction then everything will be much easier. All help is appreciated

I am relatively new to raid cards and server gear but here goes. I recently aquired an old Dell Poweredge 2800 which uses only scsi and PCIx expansion and I want to adapt it to use sata drives. My question is can I boot from a drive that is on a raid card? Once I get it to boot into windows I will setup a raid mirror with another drive. Here is the raid controller I had in mind http://www.ebay.com/itm/Supermicro-8-port-SATA-PCI-X-card-AOC-SAT2-MV8-8xSATA-cables-/252377784720?hash=item3ac2e36190:g:N9MAAOSw9ZdXKXu~

Originally I wanted this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1155175-REG/asus_pike_ii_3108_8i_16pd_sas.html as it's the one mentioned on the options for my motherboard (Z10PE-D16 WS) however I am going to have to import it to the UK and in total I am looking at around £450 I have now been looking at these 4 : https://www.xcase.co.uk/raid-h-b-a-cards/l/raid-card.html the max I would be using is 24 SATA 3 WD red pro's so they all seem over kill bar the ASUS card which has a max of 16 drives, how ever when I need more than 12, I will most likely get a second card and go from RAID 6 to 60, but that is way way in the future. I have no idea which card to get, I know they would all work for me but that's it. advice would be appreciated.

So I recently ordered three SSD's from newegg and also a new RAID card. It is a normal LSI card, can't remember the exact model. My problem is how do I install windows to a RAID 0 array before I have installed the drivers for the RAID card. It came with a disk for drivers, but I don't understand how to install windows on it without having a previous installation on your system on another hard drive. I have multiple HDD alongside my SSD's. So booting into windows isn't a problem, but I would rather just install the new OS and reformat my old drives.
