  1. Hello all, First time poster, long time lurker. I've finally got my remote gaming PC setup and desk to a point where I would like to share the setup with the community. I hope others wanting a similar setup can gleam some useful ideas from this post! Background: My gaming PC puts out a good amount of heat, and my desk is in my bedroom. In the summer the room is brutal after a few hours of gameplay. Even with aggressive AC, the room can hit 90F. I've seen Linus' setup and I already had a server rack, so I figured I'd do a similar thing with the long distance display cables. I did try out other methods; RDP, moonlight, and steam remote play, but found the latency and compression were just too noticeable. Not to mention that wake on lan is unreliable in my experience. As for thunderbolt, I didn't want to get stuck into an ecosystem of specific motherboards and cpus. The Long Cables: I found some good 75ft optical USB and Displayport cables on Amazon for ~$160 a piece. Its definitely pricy for a single cable, but it is plenty worth it IMO. I was worried about latency issues with long cables, but after testing it out, I found no noticeable difference between a 3ft USB and display cable and the 75ft cables. The Gaming PC Power Switch: The PC power switch circuit is 5v but only 0.01 amps, so voltage drop over 75ft could be less than a volt. So I could just run a pair of wires the whole distance. But I thought, if I'm running a whole other cable through the walls, I might as well make it a useful cable. Despite the extra cost, I decided to use a CAT 7 Ethernet cable and just hijack a twisted pair inside the cable. Just a little bit of future proofing if I move in the future, for the next person. I got one of those momentary push buttons with built in LED, the ones you might find on custom PC cases. And I could use a second twisted pair in the Ethernet cable and splice into the power LED header on the motherboard. Granted, the voltage drop at that distance with 24-26 awg wires is about half, but the LED still illuminates enough. And as a side benefit, I still had two twisted pairs left, just enough for a 100base-tx connection, as well as PoE mode A. (Don't ask me why when I already have an Ethernet cable to my room, in short I'm splicing off two pairs for a PoE powered GPS NTP server in the attic) As for each end of this power switch madness, I wanted something that wasn't entirely cobbled together. So, I found some Ethernet splitters, the ones that split out a gigabit Ethernet cables 4 twisted pairs into 2 100base-tx connections. For the PC side of things I got one of those M.2 to RJ45 network adapters. The one I found has the all the logic on the m.2 side, so the pcie bracket just had raw electrical connections. I used this as a nice way to make the bulkhead connection into the PC case. I got some splitters for the motherboards power sw and led headers, and connected up the rj45 network adapter. The other side was definitely more cobbled. I cut the end off an Ethernet cable and soldered the pairs (orange and green) onto the push button. Covered it in dielectric grease and wrapped in electrical tape and fabric wrap. Audio: I went pretty basic here, my monitor has 3.5mm port, so I'm just using audio over displayport. Then I have a terribly cheap 3.5mm mixer. I have ground loop isolators on all inputs and outputs and there is still a small hum in the background - to be fixed later. USB hub: This remote PC isn't my daily driver, for that I have a SFF Linux box. My KVM switch has two USB 3.0 ports (not for keyboard and mouse) that I have for a microphone and any USB drives I might need. Side note: The reason I have the connectpro KVM specifically is because I hate the delay of regular USB switches, so I needed one with USB DDM. Cable routing: I'm fairly lucky, theres an air return vent that shares a wall with my bedroom. I'm on the second floor and my server rack is in the basement, right next to the HVAC system, so it was basically a direct cable drop through the first floor. Pictures: Middle monitor is the only one I run on the gaming PC, the sides stay permanently on my daily driver SFF. Views of my cable rats nest. Gotta hide 'em somewhere: Definitely not completely finished with this setup, still have some things to take care of, like having a non-duct taped together quality audio mixer, and maybe mounting the UPS and KVM under the desk. I would love to hear what y'all think! 2. Hello LMG Forum community. I come to you today to help me select parts for a server I intend for an additional k8s node on my homelab setup. My existing setup is straight up my old gaming PC with a few add in PCIe cards for SATA/networking needs. First off, the requirements: - budget wise, I'd like to keep it under $2,500 since it's already a consequential budget. - I need mostly CPU and RAM availability. - Storage is not a concern, since my main node has about 50TB raw already, most of which is available (maybe 6TB taken total, and I have like 6 empty drive bays for additional storage if need be). - GPU not needed, I already have a GTX 1060 in my main node that I use for transcoding. - case has to be rack mountable, I am waiting for my rack to arrive, but it's 12U. My main node is taking up 3U of that, I intend to add in a 1U networking plate, and a 1U shelf for my switch - speaking of networking, my LAN is in a mix of 10G, 2.5G and 1G. 10G in SFP for my main node, 2.5G for my desktop PC, 1G for the rest. I still have an SFP 10G port on my switch which I'd like to use for my worker node. - Power consumption is a concern since it's a server at home, hence I'd like to keep it under 500W This will be a worker node in a 2-node kubernetes cluster, managed by kubeadm, both machines will run debian 12 and containerd for the container runtime (and runc of course). With those constraints laid out, I picked out these parts on pcpartpicker : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/XHwXh3 It does include a Threadripper (high core count is desirable), lots of RAM, and the rest of the parts I chose to fill it in. Case is undecided yet, since I don't know good rack mounted ATX cases. The one I have for my main node works fine, but it's not great either. I mostly picked it for the ample amount of 3.5" bays. I also plan on migrating my transcoding GPU to that new node, so that I free up an extra 2 bays for drives in my main node. So if anybody can recommend cases I can look at (in the 3U to 4U range) or recommend things I have not thought of. Thanks in advance
  3. Hi, relatively new to the forum as a whole, haven't been here much. I'm looking to acquire a 2-3U rackmount server with ideally 10-12 3.5" bays and at least enough space for a two slot PCIe-3.0 x16 lane for a GPU. I love in the EU and not managing to find a lot of good value options. Any recommendations? Thanks
  4. Hi everyone, To give you a bit of a background; I'm a music producer looking for a pc case that would fit in with the rest of my rack mounted gear. Among many other advantages, a rack mounted pc case would allow people like me to: 1) Put my case in a soundproofed rack cabinet if I didn't want to see it - and most importantly hear it, and; 2) If it wasn't a loud system, have my case sit neatly in a rackmount where it could be within reach, looking nicer, and allowing for better cable management to peripherals such as keyboards and all, while; 3) Avoiding the big no-no of putting your pc on the floor (just don't like it) At this point in time, it feels like my only options are: 1) Pull a Linus, and custom make my own case. This would take up quite a bit of resources, time, and effort to achieve. Might also be expensive? 2) Buy a sever case. Technically, yes, this isn't a problem; but I was surprised at the lack of options. It seems like the very few available options are made for industrial purposes (doi). Server cases just seem dull, and kind of take away from the fun and excitement that can go into building your own PC. I was looking for a rack mounted case, that is based around the same production goals of most modern tower cases that you can get today: - Relatively quiet should I choose to keep it within the same room (Be Quiet cases as reference?) - Relatively modern and elegant in design, form, and function - Won't have as many compatibility issues with new motherboards and components (I'm sure this isn't a problem with server racks. I think what I'm trying to communicate is modern cases available today are kind of more consumer based and user-friendly.) I was hoping I'd find a more elegant solution. Something I can display in all of it's RGB glory. Or a stealthier - but still sexy - design for those who might choose to mount the case in a sound proofed cabinet. I have a feeling there's a market for this kind of product. I'm positive there are people like me who are looking for a similar solution; I've read about there attempts or frustrations in forums. There seems to be a gap in the market for this kind of solution. I was wondering why no one picked up on it. It's definitely something that the pro-audio industry would definitely benefit from. This article shows a landslide towards PC based systems for audio in a survey conducted in 2016 and 2019. https://www.pro-tools-expert.com/home-page/2019/2/7/pro-tools-users-abandoning-apple-mac-for-microsoft-windows-new-poll-shows-alarming-results I also believe gamers could get in on rack mounted cases since there are tons of options to display them nicely.
  5. Hi all- I am planning on making a NAS for my home. I have most of the parts already laying around that I want to use. These are the current parts I already have: CPU: Intel Core i5-9600 3.1 GHz 6-Core Processor CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i 33.84 CFM CPU Cooler Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory Storage: Crucial MX500 250 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Storage: Crucial MX500 250 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Storage: Western Digital Red Plus 4 TB 3.5" 5400 RPM Internal Hard Drive Storage: Western Digital Red Plus 4 TB 3.5" 5400 RPM Internal Hard Drive Storage: Western Digital Red Plus 4 TB 3.5" 5400 RPM Internal Hard Drive Storage: Western Digital Red Plus 4 TB 3.5" 5400 RPM Internal Hard Drive Storage: Western Digital Red Plus 4 TB 3.5" 5400 RPM Internal Hard Drive Storage: Western Digital Red Plus 4 TB 3.5" 5400 RPM Internal Hard Drive Operating System: TrueNAS Scale The parts I still need to pick out are a power supply, a motherboard, a rack-mount case (either 3 or 4u), and an HBA that is compatible with TrueNAS. Does anyone have any recommendations for these parts?
  6. Hi all, I am looking to build a custom rack mount computer that will act as my home Plex / NAS Server. I am new to this stuff so I greatly appreciate feedback. Originally I was going to use an HPE DL380 Gen9 but after having it on for a while, I decided to sell it because it is unbearably loud. I already have some items purchased for the new server that I would prefer to re-use. I already have an UNRAID license for UNRAID Plus, I would be open to upgrading to Pro if I needed to though. I also already have 2x WD RED 1TB SSDs as cache drives. I also have 6x 4TB Seagate EXOS drives, 4 for storage and 2 for redundancy. I never officially had the Dell HPE server up and running just because it was so outrageously loud that I couldn't keep it on. This is the new computer I proposed to replace it with: PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/cDNscb CPU: Intel Core i5-12600K 3.7 GHz 10-Core Processor ($279.99 @ B&H) CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U9S 46.44 CFM CPU Cooler ($59.95 @ Amazon) Motherboard: MSI PRO Z690-A DDR4 ATX LGA1700 Motherboard ($219.99 @ Amazon) Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory ($274.99 @ Amazon) Storage: Western Digital Red SA500 1 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($124.99 @ Amazon) Storage: Western Digital Red SA500 1 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($124.99 @ Amazon) Storage: Seagate EXOS Enterprise 4 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($110.00 @ Amazon) Storage: Seagate EXOS Enterprise 4 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($110.00 @ Amazon) Storage: Seagate EXOS Enterprise 4 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($110.00 @ Amazon) Storage: Seagate EXOS Enterprise 4 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($110.00 @ Amazon) Storage: Seagate EXOS Enterprise 4 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($110.00 @ Amazon) Storage: Seagate EXOS Enterprise 4 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($110.00 @ Amazon) Video Card: Asus GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB DUAL EVO OC Video Card ($674.49 @ Amazon) Power Supply: Corsair RMx (2021) 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply ($149.99 @ Amazon) Wired Network Adapter: Intel X550-T2 PCIe x4 10 Gbit/s Network Adapter ($362.00 @ Amazon) Total: $2931.38 Not included in this list I need an HBA card because I can't find a motherboard with enough SATA ports and a 4U rack mount case. The graphics card I did not purchase yet, and I also do NOT plan on purchasing at $700! That is so outrageous!!! The total budget is $1800-$2000 excluding drives. I am open to purchasing things used Thanks!
  7. I have a load of potentially rack mountable electronics and I'm so tired of all the clutter, so I'm thinking of moving everything into a rack. Got any recommendations for a good 3-4U chassis for an ATX gaming PC? Would it be worth designing a custom cooling solution with shrouds or are we talking water-cooling / downdraft coolers? Gimme pics of some cool rackmount builds, if you've got any thanks!!
  8. Hello there! tl;dr: What's a good place / resource to start learning about rack-mounted hardware? For my work (as a media/film composer) I need a lot of computing power on a daily basis and it's common (in this business) to use slave machines for this purpose. In my country (the netherlands) however, there are lot of second-hand HP Proliant (or alike) servers systems for sale which seem quite affordable for the computing power/amounts of ram they offer. Now I'm quite familiar with the standard pc hardware routine. But the thing that I'm a bit scared of is that a lot of these 2nd hand servers are rack-mounted solutions. Especially since I know that they can make a lot of noise and I don't really have a space in my housing where I can stuff a server rack in a closet (which wouldn't be a great idea cooling-wise anyway). Now my question is threefold: 1. What are the basics I have to know about rack-mounted hardware formats? (Would it be possible to adapt a rack mounted system into a 'standard' case? Or are there rack mounted chassis that allow for more silent cooling?) Where would be a good place / good resources to learn about this stuff? 2. Is there a reason why this is either a very good or very bad idea that I perhaps haven't considered? 3. If this is a feasible idea I might also want to use this slave as a host for a future website / nas. I suppose it would be possible to run a machine like this for multiple purposes simultaniously (considering I know some friends who are comfortable enough around this kind of software setup.), or am I overlooking something? As is probably evident from my post I'm not very familiar with this side of computing, so even very basic information/yourtube channels/forums/articles/books/etc... are welcome! Thanks very much in advance!
  9. I want to build a medium-capacity NAS with room to upgrade the storage in the future. I want to *try* to spend about US$400-500 before drives. I'm not to knowledgeable on Xeon processors and their compatible motherboards, but I'd like to have a lower power one to save on my power bill. I plan to start out with 4x 4TB or 6TB WD Red Pro drives (drive recommendations also welcome), and slowly add 4 at a time until I fill up a 24 drive enclosure. HERE is a post to an ebay listing of a server I'm considering. I'll also need a raid card for redundancy. I don't know what type of raid I will be going for yet but I'd like 1-2 drive failures without losing data. My main use of this would be cold storage for my games, video files (not a ton right now) and a Plex server for movies.
  10. Hi everybody ! I hope you're fine :) As the title suggest I'm searching a 19" rack-mount case, preferably short (max length around ~450 mm), that could support a fair amount of graphic cards (10 right now). Only the cards because they are on PCIe risers with cables long enough to reach the motherboard in another case underneath them. I already found mining specific enclosures (up to 8 GPUs however, but could be OK) but they are too long for my 19" rack ... It's a network oriented rack that got dumped in the bin, so the maximum length I can fit is around 500 mm so most of the standard server (and mining) cases are to long. To be honest I'm not even looking for a case ! If you have ideas, or already done something like that my ears (and eyes) are all open. The main objective is to mount the GPUs into the rack with enough mechanical support to avoid bending and disconnection of the cards. Beauty doesn't matter and price is not a real problem (but the cheaper the better) but the real limitation here is the space. I'm open to any suggestion or question if you have one ! Be safe !
  11. Has anyone here rack mounted their pc? I'm looking into it as an option for consolating my 2 main PCs and audio gear.
  12. Hello! Im planning a new build of a CAD-Workstation and Gaming-Rig. But even before I decide on the Graphics (will probably get a workstation card and a gaming card), RAM etc, I like to choose a case. I'm searching for a rack-mounted case, which means I'm searching for a 4U Server case. I like to have as much airflow as possible, something like 2-3 120mm fans on the front and a few 80mm on the back. It should fit an ATX-board and 2 GPUs, as well as a decent power supply and an SSD (no HDD required). I'm also thinking about using a AIO-Watercooler with Rad, but I'm not sure to this date if it's worth it. Do you have any suggestions for a 19" case? I think 4U is standard (to fit the GPUs), the second thing is the depth, I like it as short as possible, max. 500mm if possible. I found this one (ROSEWILL RSV-R4000): https://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-Server-Chassis-Rackmount-Metal/dp/B0055EV30W?tag=linus21-20 But here, there are only two 120mm fans on the front and it's slightly longer (depth). If I go with the one with three fans on the front, the case depth increases even more. Another one is this one (NORCO RPC 431): http://www.norcotek.com/product/rpc-431/ But here I don't know if it isn't too short for all the stuff I like to put in. This one seems interesting too (ADVANTECH IPC 631): http://www.advantech.com/products/1-2jkd4b/ipc-631/mod_4088ba6f-9779-4901-9620-16ffa2143ce1 But there are only small ventilation cut-outs, so I think this won't work... right? I previously owned the ARK 4U-500-CA (https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811182566&cm_re=ark_case_4u-_-11-182-566-_-Product), which was nice, but I like to have more ventilation upgradability, when I plan this new build Thanks in advance! Manu
  13. Hey All, I'm putting together a project and I want to get my servers off the floor. I've seen people use Lack Tables as a "Lack Rack" However the legs seem hallow and unstable even when they're being stacked feet to feet. If I where to rail mount servers as well as bolt mount such as routers switches etc would I run into any stability issues? Thanks
  14. Hello, I have a normal tower PC, if a very big one (Corsair 900D), with an E-ATX Mobo, dual 120mm radiator, etc.. The specs are all on my profile if anyone's interested. I wanted to do something about this because I don't like the noise my PC makes with 6 HDD's, the GPU fans and other fans all the time. I have seen Linus' videos about his personal rig and I found it a very cool idea to put the whole PC into a server case to get rid of the noise. happen to have a server rack where I could put my PC in but it's one floor down from where my PC was and I want it to be. I have looked at a lot of things concerning this topic already, with transmitting the Monitor and IO signals across.. and one thing I have noticed with all the solutions is, that they are all quite expensive. I really don't want to spend a ton of money on this, so I would be happy if anyone could reccomend me some things in the direction of what budget 19" case I could use for this (E-ATX mobo, 6 HDD's and one SSD) and if anyone knows a cheap alternative to the Corning fibre cable and thunderbolt docks and getting all the signals up one floor through one cable that'd help me so much! I thought maybe fibre network cables could do the trick for transmitting the IO and display signals, plus they are cheap? Or are they absolutely unusable for this kind of aplication? I've seen video transmission with fibre before, but could I add two or three USB signals to this as well? I'd be so happy if anyone could help me with this!
  15. Over the next few months I'll be migrating my gear to rack mounts (yes I'm pulling a Linus and shoving it in a closet full of jeans*cough*). I don't want a fan boy war, I'd prefer an AIO, but I could go custom water, I just want to know, What would be better for temps and overclocking, air or water. Side notes Getting a 4U chassis. And if I go air I'll probably get all noctua. Current is Xeon x5690 with a 120mm AIO. GPU will be upgraded at some point, might attach to loop hence 360. Also apologies if wrong section.
  16. Hi, I'm planning to build a home server some time in the coming months, and started to look at parts. But this has been really frustrating as I really don't know what will be compatible or what is reasonably powerful in regards to cpu/ram etc. Any recommendations would be appreciated, also looking for a noise dampening solution (home rack, parent's won't be happy with fan noise at night). Looking for something around 2u with about 12 bays. Thanks, ire
  17. Hello Linus Tech Tips community, I am currently building an unraid server for the purpose of holding all of my data and to run my Virtual machines on. On top of using this for just being a file server and holding my data, I want to be able to access my files both locally and from any external computer. I will be putting this system into a server rack chassis, so any size motherboard will fit. So I'm just looking for some hardware recommendations on the build.
  18. Hi everyone planning on buying a ps4 around feb or march. I wanted to save space and buy 9U Server rack. That allows me to wall mount it. I was wondering, How I might rack mount this ps4 into this rack? I don't have any ideas other than ones that might void the warranty! Didn't like that, So stayed clear of those ideas. I did kind this server rack but it's too much and they don't ship to alaska. :-( http://www.puretheatre.com/rack-mount-ps4.html
  19. Hi all, I recently managed to acquire a couple old 1U servers for free. I'm not 100% sure what I'm going to do with them yet but they are loud! Any ideas on ways to make them run quieter? I'm not against modifying cases and they do not have to fit in a 1U area but i do want to rack mount them at some point. Side note, anyone know where I can get a cheap server rack in the Philadelphia area?
  20. I am working on converting my sister's college rig to a server to use as a media server. It will distribute 96KHz/24bit music files to several HiFi systems, as well as sonos and possibly HD video in the future. The parts that will be reused are: Intel i5 3570k, Asus P8Z77-V, G skill ram ddr3 (8gb), 120GB SSD, Antec H2O 620 (if it fits), Corsair cx430 (unless i need more power). I need to purchase a rack-mountable server case (AV Rack), with a max front rail to rear rail depth of 22" (excluding front handles and rear cables). I would like either a 3u or 4u case that will allow me to use as much hardware from my sisters rig as possible. I would like the ability to run up to 8x 3.5" HDDs, and 1 SSD (for OS). I would like to have Hot Swap bays (either added, or includedwith the case) available for all of my 8x 3.5" HDDs.. I will probably add a 4x Gigabit network card, extra ram (why not its cheap), WD or Seagate NAS Drives (for storage), and a raid card. I would like to keep the case price down as much as possible (So I can put the money towards HDD's). Any recommendations, this is my first server build.
  21. Looking for a rack mount server chassis that has ATX support for an Intel/Ryzen desktop system with a 240mm radiator. I assume it will be 4U, but I don't have a lot of experience with these kinds of setups. Needs to support a couple of PCIE slots for some network cards or a single slot GPU. Don't need any drive bays. Thanks for the help.
  22. I'm looking for a Just-a-Bunch-Of-Disks Direct Attached Storage chassis with the following criteria: minimum 12 hot-swap 3.5" drive bays rackmount 2U or 3U max depth 500mm redundant psu would be nice under £1000 available easily in the UK Can you help me?
  23. I have just ordered a pair of rosewell server chassis. I alreadya few 1u chenbro server chassies and they have hot-swap SATA/SAS trays in the front. I also have IBM rack-mount TR4 tape tray. My thought or question.. can I use a PCI mining style riser for other pci devices? My goal is to remove the two tape drives out of the enclosure it's 1u maybe 16" deep. And replace them with a Blu-ray burner in one Bay with something else in the other... Then using some type of PCI riser from another server to a SATA controller card to run the drives... The unit currently uses scsi. That was ran off a dual P2 server. I would like to do the same thing with my other 1u chassis... Stripping out the old Intel board and processors and running the raid controller off my new servers via PCI risers. Has anyone done this or any reason it wouldn't work? Can any pci card run via riser?
  24. I am looking for a place to buy 10" rackmount gear for my 8u 10" rack cabinet (data cabinet), but everywhere i've looked (netgear, amazon.co.uk, cpc) none seem to have a network switch or server chassis. Can anyone recommend a place to find 10" gear?
  25. Hello, folks! I'm looking for a silent, perhaps almost noiseless cooling solution for a rackmount chassis. I've been heavy into rack mount stuff recently, transitioning from having several full-blown tower cases (mostly AeroCool ones from 2013) to 4U rack mount systems. Didn't do much planning beforehand, but ended up with 2x 4U cases with misaligned server rails (mid-hole alignment, 3U rails for a 4U due to easy availability) and one 3U case which I'm most likely bound to throw away in the gutter (or sell on eBay). All that is installed in a 12U cabinet designed for (here comes the first constraint) being wall-mounted. Tempered glass front, 2mm metal back side wall. Here are the specs (rigs go from top to bottom): #1: Cabinet Manufacturer: Hyperline Model: TWB-1266-GP-RAL9004 Cooling: 2 * 200mm intake AeroCool Silent Master (running at 12v) (modded into side panels using a dremel) Clearance (from adjacent wall-like objects): Top: 2cm Left: 20cm Right: 110cm Bottom: 3cm Back: 10cm #2: Main rig (8 hours/day operation) Case: Procase B440-B-0 Cooling: 1 * 120mm intake 1 * 80mm outtake fan Cooler Master Hyper 612 v.2 Arctic MX4 Thermal Grease CPU: Intel i5-7600K GPU: NVIDIA GTX 780Ti Storage: Samsung NVMe 512GB PM981 SSD Crucial SATA 480GB M400 SSD Seagate 1TB SSHD Motherboard: ASUS Z270-P PRIME PSU: Corsair CX750M #3: NAS Case: Procase EB400L Cooling: 2 * 80mm intake fans (from SATA backplanes) 2 * 80mm outtake fans Intel Stock Cooler Arctic MX4 Thermal Grease CPU: Intel G3900 Motherboard: MSI H270-A PRO PSU: FSP Generic 450W PSU Storage: 6 * 3TB Seagate mixed Surveillance & NAS drives 2 * Chieftec 2131SAS backplanes 1 * NVMe M.2 drive (coming soon, 6x SATA didn't allow for a SATA M.2 installation, correct me if I'm wrong) #4: UPS (3U probably, still coming) Now, I think I would be much better off with something gigantic like a W200 tower case, which I would be much happy to get, except that it takes at least a $800 premium, and all the cases and fans I got for less than $200 (including SATA bays, rails, cabinet itself), so that leaves me with additional $600 of difference + $400 for DIY/AIO cooling solutions. So far, my 200mm fans case made a noticable 6°C difference in overall temperature, however my CPU idles at 50° (without overclocking) and is able to turbo without thermal throttling for around 3 to 4 minutes; and then it throttles hard, dropping down almost to 2.8GHz. I'm considering the following options so far: Water-cooling radiator for 1U with QD3 and a custom loop for both rigs (separate pumps probably) Replacing CPU cooler (612 didn't fit into my 4U case, so I had to cut off four topmost blades as well as trim down copper tubing; maybe it's useless now) Delidding CPU, replacing TIM with liquid metal, as well as putting a copper IHS afterwards Drilling backside holes for 4*200mm outtake fans Replacing tempered glass with acrylic and putting intake fans on the front of the cabinet Adding a 120mm AIO for the CPU in my main rig Soundproof foam all over the cabinet as well as cases Changing PSUs to low-noise ones (like FSP Hydro G series) Does anybody have ideas regarding available options? Pics of the setup provided. Cable management is a mess right now, but the setup is still in progress.
