  1. Hello A while back i bought a R9 390 Sapphire 8GB and have been using it for quite a long time. I never had any issues until recently I started getting crashes with error Kernel Power 41. After reading through a lot of forums etc i saw that people were saying that it could be the cpu gpu psu and many more causing the problem. So i decided to bite the bullet and buy a "new" gpu ( 1080TI ) and a new 700W PSU. My pc worked without any crashed after the upgrade. But here is the main issue and also why im writing here. On my little brothers bday i built him a PC and used my old R9 390 completely forgetting about the issues i had with the Kernel Power 41 issue. After 2 weeks of him using the pc with no issues he got his first kernel power 41 crash and i instantly knew that its the GPUs fault. Now im asking for help trying to figure out if anyone on this forum knows how i could find the problem on the gpu and fix it. Ive heard of Heatgunning the GPU but idk if that will fix it. I know its all a high risk high reward type of situation. Thanks for reading.
  2. So this is not something I had planned on doing but here we are... After reading and watching about the rather bazar 5600X3D and having no self control I decided to pick up the RAM, Motherboard and CPU combo at Microcenter. Which can be found here I had 0 reason for doing this other than upgrading to something that officially supports Windows 11 and some random memory detection issues on my current X99 based system. I also hope this will give me an incentive to get back into some PC gaming and try out some newer titles... but that is where this gets "fun" since I will be pairing this with my XFX R9 390 until I decide to upgrade the GPU. At least it is all AMD? Here is a link to my old build log on this current system if you are curious! Everything has remained the same minus changing over to a Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4P paired with a Xeon E5-1650v3 and 32GB of ECC 2400 4x8gb and a few little things like newer and less hard drives. https://linustechtips.com/topic/537405-sleeper-inwin-q2000-case-mod/#comment-7126881 Anyway let's get into the build! Also if you are building a system around the 5600X3D I would love to see it or hear what you think of it so far! GPU recommendations? Here are the parts as linked above: CPU - Ryzen 5 5600X3D Heatsink - Deepcool AK620 RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws 2x8gb 3200 DDR4 Motherboard - ASUS B550-Plus Wifi II GPU - XFX R9 390 8Gb Storage - Crucial P5 Plus 1TB NVMe SSD, 1TB WD Blue Sata 2.5 SSD and a 1TB WD Black 3.5 Hard drive Case - InWin Q2000 Power Supply - EVGA Supernova 750 watt semi modular All of this will be built on a 2001 Honda CRV folding table!
  3. Hello. I'm a total noob when it comes to pc. But after sometime thinking and planing, finally decided to build myself a PC. Parts are coming in a week, but except the Gpu. Was planing a single pc streaming setup but then 1660's are out of stock everywhere(I don't live in USA btw), and getting 3000series atm is no no, So decided to go with a decent budget option for the time bein. Here is my parts: Cpu: ryzen 5 3600 Mobo: Msi mortar max b450m Ram: Crucial Ballistix 16g in dual 3200mhz Storage: some kingston nvme and 2tb 7200rpm hdd Psu: haven't decided yet but gonna get 600w one And some cheap as case. I can live with that And 1080p 144hz display to go with it, thinking about upgrading to 1440p in some time tho not soon. So, here is how this is looking right now, Gtx 970 4gb ... 144 usd R9 390 4gb ... 134 usd R9 290 4gb ... 115 usd Seller is telling me they are all new, but we all know that's total bs. But I'm ok with that, as long as they runs. So, Happy to hear your opinions guys
  4. Hello so I have been thinking alot about upgrading my graphics card. I have a amd 390 right now. So my question to you is it worh to upgrade my graphics card now or should i wait for nvidas new series? I use a 1080p monitor with 144hz. My cpu is a 4670k but I will upgrade it to ryzen 3600 because I want more ram and I feel like it would be waste of money to buy ddr3 right now.
  5. Afterburner CTRL+L doesn't seem to work. And I need to do this to see if my gpu will work fine like that, since when its under a certain voltage/frequency - most apps start glitching out. Using a MSI r9 390 8gb, drivers - latest (default windows drivers do work without doing this kinda stuff)
  6. So I purchased the ASUS R9 390 8GB 3 years ago. It was great for the first year, and then 1 of the fans went out (out of 3). Temps sort of went up, but not a lot, so I didn't see a reason to buy a whole replacement fan set. About 3 months later, the 2nd fan went out. At that time, I decided it was time to upgrade things, so I ended up buying the Ryzen 5 2600 (from my old AMD 8560), and I bought an MSI variant of the same card (2 fans) on ebay from a guy who was selling one for $100. Yeah it was used, but he was selling it because he bought an upgrade and just didn't need it anymore, so $100 for another R9 390 wasn't bad. I went a head and bought a new one because the "replacement" fan set of 3 fans was being sold for $80, so for another $20 I had a new card, and a backup (in case I needed it). I really liked the R9 390; does great in games, but now I'm starting to see lower and lower FPS averages when I buy new titles. (However, for SOME reason, this R9 390 is still on amazon for sell for roughly $400 -- no idea why). So I ran the new MSI R9 390 + Ryzen 5 for another year, and recently I did tests to see where my R9 390 sat in regards to performance and matched against the new stuff. And over the course of 3 years, it has significantly decreased ( userbenchmark.com puts it at the 50th percentile). Now, I'm debating on the upgrade and I've been looking at the 2060 Super which will run me $430ish for an aftermarket MSI boosted). How is the 2060S as far as handling the latest titles. I haven't migrated into the 2k 4k gaming yet. But I want to ensure that any games I get in the next year or two, can handle 60FPS without a year passing and then thinking "Welp, have to upgrade again". My other major complaint of the R9 390 has ALWAYS been the temps. You can easily hit 85C on high settings, and a lot of users have complained of even 90C. It's just the nature of that card. I'm just a casual gamer (maybe 2-3 hours every day or two); but I want to be able to install Resident Evil 3 when I get time off work, play it on max settings, and maintain 60fps stable, as well as other games.
  7. So I have the ASUS R9 390 (https://www.asus.com/Graphics-Cards/STRIXR9390DC3OC8GD5GAMING/) It's working fine, and does the job, and doesn't actually throttle, but I believe that it's not normal, as its idle temp is about 65°C, and the fans (which are cleaned) are working fine, if I manually turn them up, they can cool down the thing like hell, but automatically, they don't. While gaming, it's just standing around 90°C. Again, no thermal throttle, and I can lower the temps easily manually, but the STRIX cooling software part seems to be letting the temp go too high. What should I do about it?
  8. So basically it's what the title says when I run the following code this is what i get sudo lshw -C video description: VGA compatible controller product: Hawaii PRO [Radeon R9 290] vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0 version: 80 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm pciexpress msi vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=amdgpu latency=0 resources: irq:124 memory:c0000000-cfffffff memory:d0000000-d07fffff ioport:e000(size=256) memory:d0800000-d083ffff memory:c0000-dffff No idea what is causing this. found nothing like it online.
  9. All right! So AMD's older cards like the HD4870 for example could have been crossfired with any other HD48** cards. But the official AMD website that is supposed to show me the compatibility has not been updated since R9 200 series. What's the current situation in this topic? RX480+RX470 possible? or R9 390+RX480? or it's simply no longer true that you can crossfire different cards?
  10. Looking to swap out my 680 for when Mass Effect Andromeda comes out. Want to get something as close to or under £200, the 390 and the 1060 are the best choices I can think of, what do people think?
  11. Hello all, For a while now I have been using AMD drivers 16.5 or earlier because any drivers since then have caused issues with my GPU. My build is as follows: CPU - i5 6600k (not overclocked) GPU - Sapphire R9 390 Nitro (w/ backplate, not overclocked) Mobo - Asus Z170-A PSU - EVGA G2 650W Whenever I install a newer driver, my PC restarts after installation, then 30-60 seconds after reaching the desktop, the screen goes to a dark grey/black and will not display any image. I cannot shut my PC down without holding the power button on the case. I am quite concerned that newer drivers aren't working, and I am wondering if anyone knows why? Is my card faulty? Is my PSU not providing enough power? (Sapphire recommend 750W, but I only have 650W, although I've only had problems in the last few months. Are there some other hardware incompatibilities? Many thanks to anyone who can help.
  12. All right. I've found someone who would give me an RX 480 4GB version for my R9 390. Which might sound as a bad deal, and might really be. As I've noticed, the R9 390s greatest advantage over this one, and most previous generation cards is the huge amount of VRAM. But since I only play games on 1080p, I'm not even sure if I have ever used more than 5GB. Can RX 480 4GB outperform the R9 390 8GB on lower VRAM usages like 2-3GB? Please stick to the question, I don't care about futureproof or NVidia advantages.
  13. Hey, recently I just purchased a powercolor r9 390 for my new build, but I wanted to test it on my old build first. Specs: i5 750 (3.5ghz oc) msi p55-cd53 mobo 4gb ram geforce 210 400w psu so so I took out the GeForce 210, put in the r9 390 and it did not power on. HDMI cable is confirmed working. I noticed there was an 8 pin plug as well as a 6 pin plug. My psu did not have an 8 pin plug but I figured that 150w was enough to power on. (75w PCIe connector, 75w 6 pin) (am I wrong here??) I can't tell if the graphics card turned on as it has the quiet thing in which the fans will not spin until the card is at 60 deg C. But the bios did not even flash. Is it because i only have 4gb ram, when the box it came with said the minimum was 8gb ram?? Help. I want to make sure the graphics card is working fine. Thanks! All help and tips appreciated!!
  14. I have a Sapphire Nitro R9 390 8G. I am contemplating of replacing it with GTX 1060 mainly because the 390 is quite a hot card. I have played around the fan curves but it still it goes to the mid 80 degrees C What do you think?
  15. Hey folks, so upon updating to AMD's latest drivers (17.1.2) I tested WattMan (AMD's built in overclocking component) as it finally fixed a bug with multiple monitors. I started increasing the memory overclock I previously had clocked at 1660MHz. To my surprise I reached 2000MHz, the limit of what I can do on WattMan. I was a bit dumbfounded this clock speed was working in 3DMark's standard Firestrike test without any issues. GPU-Z confirmed I was running at these speeds so I decided to test ArmA 3 and GTA V.. and had no issues with either of them. I will admit I haven't tested in-game performance extensively as I'm aware benchmarks aren't comparable to actual games in the sense of overclocking. Firestrike scores: Stock: 10040 Overclock: 11654 Can any other 390 owners reproduce this or am I just completely not understanding something here? Have a lovely day/evening/night!
  16. Which of these cards will offer better performance for the lower price? http://www.ebuyer.com/757637-xfx-radeon-rx-480-core-4gb-gddr5-dvi-hdmi-3x-displayport-pci-e-rx-480p4lfb6?mkwid=s_dm&pcrid=51482416379&pkw=&pmt=&gclid=CjwKEAiArIDFBRCe_9DJi6Or0UcSJAAK1nFvEp2exZl0wo3q-nYFqNsAOWnwdUbAUF14wJDRQ8jD9hoCfgjw_wcB http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/VTX3D-R9-290-4GB-DDR5-graphics-card-Boxed-Dual-Bios-R9-290X-/272551727772?hash=item3f7559529c%3Ag%3AJBsAAOSwfVpYnMWv&_trkparms=pageci%3A0acf6408-f175-11e6-98ae-74dbd180ad04%7Cparentrq%3A348135ef15a0a5e0a74705d3fff807b5%7Ciid%3A5 http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/182452338870?_mwBanner=1 http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/322416591440?_mwBanner=1 I'm looking for 1080p 60fps ultra/high or 1440p 45+FPS medium/high/low in most games. Which card would suit me best?
  17. Is there a safe (preferably but not nessecarily semi/fully modular) psu that can run a r9 390 and a i5 6400 with headroom to oc the 390 and upgrade the cpu for under 50 pounds? I wanted the corsair cx450m, but the r9 390 would make the system draw 425w, so.... the evga 500b and 600w might work, but their quality is apparently iffy. I am happy to upgrade the psu in a year or two but preferably not .
  18. Is it worth it to get a R9 390 (possibly X) used w/o warranty or a RX 480 (4GB) new with warranty? They would total around the same price, as the R9 390 or 390X would require a more expensive psu. I would be gaming in 1080p, but want to game in 1440p so 8gb vram seems a good idea. i'm looking at cards around 160-200 gbp.

  20. When I bought my Sapphire Radeon 390 last year, I paid $330 for it. Now, I have seen them going online for $500-$700?!? Does anyone know WHY these particular GPU's have spiked in price so much?
  21. I just rebuilt my pc and now my R9 390 is cranking up the heat. I only have Blizzard games installed so far, but Overwatch in particular is acting up. Doesn't matter if running fullscreen or borderless windowed (my preference), soon as I get into game the fans on the 390 go to 100% and temps start climbing rapidly. Just sitting in the menu I've had it reach 93C. But, when I switch to another window (like this tab to type - 2 monitors) the fans noticeably quite down & the temps can revert as far down at 75C. (Not sure if OW has a focus/background FPS limiter hidden in it) WoW shows none of this behavior; D3 will cap at 88C & 130 FPS and the fans will be at 100%. Starcraft II oddly only ramps up during certain home screen backgrounds. In OW, my settings are Borderless, 1080p144, Vsync on & off, and the default Ultra profile. I haven't changed anything in the AMD display drivers & there's no overclock on the GPU. SPECS: Win 8.1 Asrock Fatal1ty Z97X i5 4690K @ 3.8GHz w/ Corsair H105 AiO (top mounted) 4x4GB DDR3 @ 1866MHz MSI R9 390 (stock) Samsun 960 Evo M.2, 850 EVO & Corsair Force GT All in a Corsair Air 540 - 3 Cougar Vortex 120mm front intakes @ 1300RPM 2 Fractal Venturi's in Push on the radiator as top exhaust @ 1100RPM 1 Cougar Vortex 140mm @ 1200RPM as exhaust Previous install it would only top out near 80C, but I had a small mATX case that had 2 Corsair SP120s blowing directly on the GPU from 2 inches away. (Thermaltake v21 for reference) But even without those fans, why is Overwatch in particular doing this to the GPU? I know the 390 can be hot but hitting 90c just in the menu is ridiculous. And I'm worried because the GPU fans are already at 100% so I can't turn those up, and the Air 540 doesn't have any more mounting points for fans. I could possibly up the front intakes but I don't think that would matter when the GPU is roasting as much as it is. I've tried Vsync on & off and neither option makes a difference. (Just for note, I had an mATX board previously & don't have access to it anymore so I can use other chassis with side fans.) So what is cause this temp spike & how to fix it? Motherboard & case is only change since last install. I'd hate to think I can't use a perfectly good 390 because the temps are going insane. And I did put new MX-4 thermal paste on it about 3months ago. It ran aboutg 75-80c then too & was curious if that would help. It didn't. Help!
  22. Hi there! Some months ago, I decided to try to liquid cool my computer. So far, I have had loads of fun learning and researching different aspects of the liquid cooling systems, but there is so much out there that it all seems a bit daunting at first. I have a couple of questions, but first; the system. Case: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv mATX Mobo: Asus ROG Maximus VIII Gene CPU: Intel i5-6600K RAM: 2x8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport (2400 MHz) GPU: MSI R9 390 Gaming 8G PSU: Corsair RM750x Storage: 512GB Samsung 850 Evo + 1TB Seagate Laptop SSHD Pump+Res: EK-XRES 100 DDC MX 3.2 PWM Front Rad+fans: EK CoolStream SE 240 + 2x Vardar 1850RPM fans Top Rad+fans: EK CoolStream PE 240 + 2x Corsair SP120 Quiet Ed. fans Had some difficulties figuring out where to rout the tubing in this build, but am quite happy with the way it turned out. I am tempted to redo the tubing in hard acrylic or PETG, but I am a bit confused on the options and ranges of tube sizes available. From what I gather tube size is mostly a matter of visual preference? Are there any other things to look our for when choosing tube and fittings size? I am thinking of incorporating more white into the build, maybe using white fittings and some lighting. Also considdering using white pastel coolant. However, my GPU core temperatures seem to go a bit warm (the GPU core is touching on 80-82oC after benchmarking in Unigine Valley for 30+ mins). Are these temperatures normal? The cooling liquid is getting close to 60oC (upper 50-ies). I am aware that the R9 390 is notorious for high operating temps, so I am not sure if these temps are normal or not. Might turn this thread into a sort of build log if I decide to go for hard tubing. ^^ Comments and suggestions are much welcome - exciting to be joining such a knowledgable community!
  23. PC Specs: i7-4790k no o/c ASRock Z97m Pro4 Sapphire R9 390 Nitro Corsair CX600m 16GB G.Skill Ares Samsung 850 Evo Seagate 3tb HDD Windows 10 Pro 64bit I came home from work to see that my beloved gaming rig's screen wouldn't wake up. I tried to wake it and saw that the numlock light on the keyboard worked. I started troubleshooting and found that my GPU's fans weren't spinning. I thought the worst and popped open my wife's computer and took out her GTX 960. I put it in my computer and it didn't work, still no video, but now the fans were spinning. I put my 390 in her computer and still no spinning fans, at this point I tried the bios button on it that normally lights up when pressed. No love the card seems to not be getting power. Moving back to my computer I tried onboard video and it booted normally. I decided to try my last GPU, which doesn't take external power so I pulled an old Sapphire Radeon 5450 out of my HTPC and try it. It worked just fine and output video. I put the GTX 960 back into my wife's computer and it worked just fine. I thought maybe there was a PSU problem and the PCI-E power was bad, so I swapped in an older 750W Antec PSU I had laying around. It still didn't help and neither my wife's GTX 960 nor my R9 390 worked. I did notice that the GTX 960 was detected by speedfan when I opened it while using onboard video. Now Im stuck here scratching my brain trying to figure out what is bad. My 390 seems to be toast, it doesn't work in 2 different machines, but the kicker is a known good 960 doesn't work in my machine either, but the known good 5450 does. Anyone have and ideas? I was going to try to use the 2nd PCI-E slot on my mobo but it is in slot 4 and I can't use a 2 slot GPU in it due to my case. TLDR: My machine won't output video from R9 390 or GTX 960 but will with Radeon 5450 R9 390 doesnt work in either machine GTX 960 works in wife's computer, its detected in mine but no video. Replaced PSU thinking that was the culprit, no joy. Please help
  24. Hello, It's been 2 years sins i bought my r9 390 card for gaming but recently I'm interessted in testing some high res butter smooth 1440p 144hz. The problem is that I don't really know wich card I should buy for that. I thought about a gtx 1070 (even though it isnt enough for 144HZ at that resolution) or maybe wait for Vega to come at the stores. I have a budget of around 400 bucks. I thought maybe just wait for the gtx 2000 series to come out or get a 350 second hand 1080. What should I do? thx
