I'm currently running an MSI R9 290x on a really old motherboard an Asus P6T SE, I've been running the card slightly overclocked for about 2 weeks, everything was running fine I didn't have any issues. One day I'm in game and the screen suddenly glitched, went black and switched off. I tried turning the system on again but I can't even get it to boot to bios, absolutely nothing my screen, it's completely black. My PSU is a 650w from Cooler Master I don't think it's the PSU. Everything still works, fans spin on my case and GPU, LED's light up etc. What I've tried: 1. Opening the GPU cleaning any dust and re-applying the thermal paste 2. Re-seating and cleaning the CPU 3. Tried every RAM slot with one in each slot 4. My PSU has two 6+2 Connectors and I've tried both I read somewhere it may be something to do with the 12V rail but didn't work either 5. Disconnected all inputs, keyboard, mouse etc and tried booting 6. Re-inserting all connectors on the motherboard 7. I was using a DPI to HDMI connector I switched it to HDMI to HDMI and no luck At this point I'm completely out of options it's a really decent GPU even for today's games. I'd appreciate any help thank you!

Hello there once again I find myself encountering almost the same problem I had a long time ago. I use my R9 290X (4GB) on my daily use computer and since I've had it for almost 3 Years now I noticed from the start the performance wasn't so great, but I'm sure if it was for some other reason it would've gone away when I upgraded my PC to Kaby Lake, but still the issue is there. now one thing that boggles my mind is that I have the GTX 1050 (2GB) Mini from Zotac and then when playing the same games I tried for cards I think 1050 runs better, Titles such as Battlefield 1, Mafia 3, Assains creed Unity, and so on. When I tried to do the benchmark on Valley the R9 290X got a score of 1614, and the GTX 1050 got one of 1315. Shouldn't the R9 290X outperform 1050?

Alright, so I've tried to look around to see if there is an answer for my question, but since i'm running 2 R9 290x's in CF I can't seem to find out exact information. Base clock for both of them is ~1330 Mhz. So I'm thinking of upgrading my GPUs to either the 1080 strix or the 1080 SC because, I want to go into 4K gaming. Right now I'm gaming on a 1080p projector and even now with most of the AAA titles my 2 GPUs can't run max settings anymore and really most games have to run closer to medium (and this is on 1080p) so I really don't think they will be able to do much in 4K but I have no way to test it right now (aside from super-sampling from the GPU, but IDK if that is a good indicator of true 4K performance). So is it worth the upgrade? Will I see much of a performance boost? Or should I just wait for the next iteration of cards to come out before upgrading? Cost wise I'm guessing after selling the 2 cards I'll end up more or less even, so it really isn't that big of a deal here. And from what i've deducted going into 1080 SLI wouldn't be worth it so... yea. The only think I found was upgrading from a R9 295 to a 1080 would be a 22% increase in performance, and about a 48% increase in performance from 1 R9 290x. Any thoughts would be great!

Hey guys, I'm gonna need some advice on my rig. I've been using this like 4 years from now for gaming and surfing. I did some improvements on the rig but I'm not sure if I'm using it right or if I did something wrong. I just want to get the "best" out of this build. Here are the specs of it and some issues that I want to mention, the whole system and some questions about it down there. What I'd like to have is your comments and some advice on it. (fyi, I can't spend any money for it since I am unemployed at this very moment and will be for 3-5 months more.) Specs Spoilers contain Spec lists of the components. And click on components to go the manufacturer's website for the product itself. (as much detail as possible cos why not.) Mobo: MSI 970 gaming socket AM3+ Cpu: AMD 8120 / 3.1 GHz Black Edition (couldn't find the official cpu page) Vga: Sapphire Tri-X R9 290X 4G GDDR5 Memory(s): Silicon Power Xpower 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 2133 Ram Psu: Xilence XP700 700W 135MM Fan Gaming Series 80+ Power Supply Chasis: Zalman Z3 plus ATX mid tower Computer Case Ssd: 500gb Samsung ssd 750 evo -> contains my geniune win10 pro, and games and stuff. Cpu Cooler: Zalman LQ 310 Single fan with push-pull, installed. Chipset cooler: Xigmatek Porter Chipset Cooler (N881) interesting part here, I am using it but I don't know do I still need it, with a 8cm silent fan operated by motherboard. I'll be sharing HWmonitor temperatures because that was why I felt the need of using this "chipset cooler" because why not. Hdd1: 2tb WD green 7200rpm sata 3.0 (used to be external but it's "external adapter circut board(not sure it's the name for it)" stopped working, now it's internal), contains my steam games but it has bad sectors in it. Sometimes I have to copy what I can from the game backup with Jfile recovery and make steam redownload the broken data. Hdd2: 1tb WD blue 7200rpm sata 3.0 (empty) sometimes I install linux on it and be happy. Hdd3: 2tb WD my book external usb 3.0 -> contains all my data (photos, backups, etc) I don't always put both 2 internal hdd Sound card: I use Asus Xonar DG 5.1 PCI soundcard because the on board sound quality of this particular motherboard of MSI is absolutely disgusting. OK. It's not much right? But the performance I'm getting from it is not my issue and It's totally fine imo. But temperature levels and noise pollution totally are. Which is why I've decided to share all the details with my rig to you guys and hear you out. I don't overclock it. It runs everything on stock with latest build of win10 pro as OS and always updated, latest drivers from amd for r9 290x, latest drivers of everything on the setup. I'm using it for gaming, surfing, I do maintenance for once in 3 months; I change thermal paste, I remove dust and I believe the cable management is OK (not perfect but really enough to not to block the airflow if you check out some pics at the attachment part ) And I use this thermal paste (click to go the manufacturer website) maybe this is an issue? TX Thermal Paste 30g model TXCCT3OG Thermal conductivity ≥ 1.93 W/m-K Thermal impedance < 0.255°C-in²/W The airflow looks like this; (the weird heatsink at the middle is a chipset cooler which I stated on my specs) So what do you think? Is the airflow ok? Should I keep using that chipset cooler or not? There used to be the stock heatsink on the chipset which is that; But I've changed it with a custom, bigger heatsink works with a 8cm fan that I mentioned up here because my pc was running hot. But that didn't work. Yeah AMD systems runs hot I know. But still I wanted to do something about it. I wonder why it runs so hot and I don't know whether some Intel systems overheat that much too. Below there are temps. Here are my temperatures from HwMonitor after gaming (Dirt Rally on ultra 1080p) for an hour; When I was gaming, ambient temp was 15-20 celcius See the tmpin1 temp on hwmonitor? 91 celcius max. I mean what is that? It runs 80 - 90 celcius when I game. It's not the chipset in that case right? Because installing an aftermarket heatsink didn't help. I was getting the same temperature levels before installing it and now it still runs hot. About the noise issue, some might say it's silent when it's idle. But I can't stand even to that noise and while gaming, I use headphones to not to hear it. But I have a surround sound system and I'm not hearing it clearly when the volume is low enough to not to wake anyone up in the house. This is the best I could get with what I have.. I mean, would Noctua fans run more silent? Sorry I can't measure the sound of it and post it here somehow. But I can say it's loud for me. Maybe it's not loud for any other user out there but I don't know. How is your system running? For example if you have an intel system and an nvidia card, would that run more silent? how can I make this rig "dead silent"? or I can't? If I have a custom water cooled system with all the blocks and stuff, would it be silent? And of course what do you suggest me to do with what I have? If i spend a little on something you suggest, what can I achieve? Is something wrong with this rig? I need all of your suggestions and comments really. And I included some more photos of my setup at the attachments if you'd like to see the system from different angles. I guess that's it.. Had a lot of questions for you guys. Thank you for your time and please enlighten me if you have anything to say about this setup.

i CAN'T overclock my 290x after wattman supported the "200" series I can't overclock the way I used to be. I don't know why I can't, before I can overclock it to 1200 if the temperature are good I used sapphire trixx software and everything good but after wattman supported 200 series I can't control the voltage the way I used to work because wattman prevent me to exceed 1250 voltages. ?? helppppp

I can get the NZXT kraken G10 and Cooler-master h55 aio cooler for £50 from a friend, is it worth it? I can overclock my card but it starts thermal throttling, would this help achieve greater clocks? Found an r9 270x for $210, i know its an older card but it preforms well, is it still worth it for a first time build?

Hey guys, Recently slapped a waterblock on my [working] r9 290x and now I'm having a few issues with it working. Prior to putting this new block on I flashed the card with a bios from a 390x which was accidentally an 8GB model I have a 4gb model so this ended up causing crashing and other issues, I flashed the stock bios back and it was all working well. This card has dual bios however neither of the bios's are working now. I'm able to get into windows and what not but as soon as the card gets a load put on it, the system crashes and the video output stops. I've tried to reflash my stock bios that I made a backup of from a 'dos' state using ATIFlash but it says the adapter is not found. I've seen on some other forums of people jumping the bios chip on the motherboard (https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/re-flash-corrupted-vga-bios.175521/). I was wondering if anyone could suggest something or give me some diagrams for the PCB of a reference R9 290x? TIA

Hey guys, I recently grabbed a second hand 290x (reference design) to use for a mining rig and its sitting at 90 degrees with the stock profile so I have to crank the fan on it which makes it super loud. I was wondering if there was a way to mount a cpu watercooler to it and have some heatsinks on the VRMS with a small fan on it? I know theres things like the Corsair HG10 and the NZXT Kraken g12 but I was trying to do this for as cheap as possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA

Hello, I suppose I have an issue here - as a friend of mine has lost some cables from his modular power supply, he can't yet replace his GTX 670 which I would be getting otherwise. As my power supply should be able to just about handle it, he handed me a R9 290X Lightning (another hand down from another friend) for the time being. Now the issue - I don't want to risk anything with my PSU, so I would like to undervolt and underclock the GPU. Is that easily possible, or can I expect some issues? Or should I just keep my GTX 560 for a couple more weeks? Or should I just stop worrying and start again once I run into actual issues? Hardware: Xeon e5649 @4 GHz (6 core) + EKL Brocken Eco MSI x58 Pro-E 6x4GB DDR3 R9 290X Lightning Samsung 840 Evo 250 GB 250 GB Samsung 7.2kRPM HDD (could live without this, but I doubt it'll make a relevant difference with power consumption) Asus Xonar DGX (could live without this, but I doubt it'll make a relevant difference with power consumption) Be Quiet! It's time for an upgrade. Recently coil whine has come to plague my R9 290x. I need a card with more crab than 4gb. Even on a 1600 x 900 (I'll be upgrading to 1080p) screen I have games that max my 290 out. I like to play open world games but I definitely want ultra in them all. I was going to get a GTX 1060 but I've just recently discovered some issues possible with the card. I'd just like recommendations. I'm also thinking nvidia is the way to go. Many thanks in advance. ?

I'm planning to upgrade my CPU FX-8350 many people keep telling that is causing a bottleneck for my R9 290X and so on. The real issue for me is not being able to play Battlefield 1 without stuttering every 3-10 seconds or many new titles for that matter, and yes I have tried other cards such as the RX 480 8GB (brand new). But the same issue kept showing up, and now I've decided to try reaching out for people who could help me out with their knowledge. if you could recommend me to what CPU I should get to be set for a long time I'll gladly appreciate it, I just don't wanna keep throwing out money to the thrash like i did with this build that i basically purchased 3 months ago. So please keep that in mind. Thank you

The long story short (r9 290x reference) I replaced the stock cooler with my old directcu ii from a r9 280x after sanding down the parts where it needed. I had to lenghten the wires so it can reach the card's fan terminal. For the first try the card started, fan started, everything was working, i was like hell yeah, even temps were around 50C degree I tried some load on the card when a cable came loose from the lenghtened fancable and something in my pc made a quiet pop and it shut down. Pc boots and everything seems to be working exept the card. I did fix the cables and rechecked every cable and soldering but the card doesn't turn on only the fan. No signal and it doesn't heat up anymore. I checked the caps and saw nothing out of ordinary tomorrow check the card in an other pc I would like to know what parts should i check or any advice getting it working again

My GPU has been experiencing some really strange problems. I know it's the GPU, because the problem isn't present with another AMD GPU. So basically everytime my PC isn't shut down properly will result in artifacts when I boot it up next time, even if I cut off the power to the PSU and wait for a while. Like it remembers it. Fixing it sounds quite simple, but it's actually not... To fix it I simply have to boot it up (with artifacts or not) and shut it down through windows. I won't have any artifacts next time when I shut it down through windows. However, with the artifacts my PC is so unstable that I'll take like 5 tries to get into windows, I'll just lock up (freeze) so badly that I can't get into windows and shut it down properly. Also when my PC doesn't have artifacts there is still a chance that it freezes 15 minutes into a game, which requires me to reset it and this results in artifacts again. (It's more stable without artifacts) The artifacts are also not too extreme. They don't fill the entire screen most of the time. Sometimes it's also not only blocks, but like a massive blue triable that covers my screen briefly. I've also seen it cause changes to colors in windows, for example: it once changed the windows progress bar (when launching Steam) from Green into blue. What have I tried: - Reinstall windows 10; - Reflash the vbios; - Try a different bios (my GPU has 2); - Different drivers; - Different GPU (fixed it), but I would like my R9 290x back. TL;DR R9 290x wants to be shut down properly. It won't stop giving me artifacts until I manage to boot into windows and shut down. Cutting the power won't even fix it. Card is also very unstable and locks up my computer often.

Good afternoon all, I am a newcommer to the OC world and have a few questions that hopefully a few of you can help answer. I currently own an ASUS R9 290X DCUII and love it. I mainly use the PC for photo and video editing so it is a little overkill but was a bargain price. I started doing some benchmarks and realised i could get much better scores by overclocking the GPU I have been using the ASUS GPUTweak II tool to overclock but not sure this is the best application for it. Here are my clocking settings:

Ok so when I started the University in 2015 I bought an fx9590 to upgrade my existing mobo (Asus M5A99FX 2.0 Pro) As it sits now it has AMD Sappire r9 290x vaporx 8gb Under clocked to 5% less power draw and memory clock max at 1099 ghz about 650 watt psu 32 gb corsair vengeance 1866 ghz Dark rock pro 4 *with a 3rd fan 2 140 front intake 1 120 rear exhaust 1 92 side intake so at first when I got the card it would just black screen with in minutes of use then I was told to under clock the card and lone behold the black screen stoped. after i decided to try putting the computer threw its paces with high hopes. Unfortunately the mobo turboed the chip to 5.1 ghz and it would boot to the sign in page the it would give me a blue screen with the sad face seconds before it shuts off and enters a boot loop. I then disabled the turbo in the bios and tried to mess with the wattage and speed to try preventing it from trying to spike up. Unfortunately it would not post with those settings. I then when back put it in energy efficient mode clocked memory to 1866mhz and disabled turbo and left the wattage on auto. This allows me too boot up, stream YouTube, and other basic necessities that you need fro a computer. When ever I try to open a game the computer will freeze either with a black screen or on the windows home screen. Doesn’t load game and also when I try updating windows to os 19xx it will download then freeze on installation. Any info would help tremendously.
