I recently moved into a new apartment, bought new WiFi 7 2.5 GbE routers and the set-up is a bit different. As a result, I can't use Storage Plug & Connect on my QNAP NAS for permanent drive mapping. I've attached a diagram of my network with as much information as possible. I understand the issue is caused by the order of my network: internet > switch > NAS & routers & laptop (wireless) I'm trying to figure out which is the best option to resolve the above issue. move the Router from the living room into the networking closet This is probably the easiest to do but would negatively impact coverage (all walls are concrete). Use one of the Huawei wifi6 routers I'm not using from my last place - free I don't know if this would cause issues due to different brands. Would it work well if I disabled wifi? Buy another TP-link router I could buy either a cheaper WiFi7 or WiFi6 router for TP-link and disable wifi - around $40 CAD I could buy the more expensive WiFi7 BE6500 - $100 CAD some other switch I don't know about I'm looking up SOH, Omada, ethernet switch The less I need to configure in the router the better as it's all in Chinese.

Hi, i have a qnap nas at home that i store my media and my data on. i want to create an offsite backup to it. i want to user an old workstation i have lying around. it should work fine, it has an 8th gen i5, 16gb of ram, a 512gb nvme ssd and a 16TB hdd. i've never done such a task before. i'm a quick learner and i don't need a step by step guide, but i'd like advice on what nas os should i install on the workstation and what would be the best way to implement it.

Hi there, I've recently got myself a secondhand QNAP TS-251+ 2 bay NAS that was no longer being used from work. Since it has been sitting in storage for some time, the original power supply was lost, so I picked up a compatible 12v 5a power supply from ebay. I've found that the NAS only boots when there are no drives connected. Each time I connect the drives when prompted to by the setup guide the NAS seems to lose power. The drive that I'm trying to install is a WD red 4TB drive. I've had a look at the listed power input specs from the sticker on the NAS and online and it says that it takes 12v 5a input. So far, I've tried two different 12v 5a power supplies, both resulting in the same issue. I managed to update it's firmware to version 5.0.1.2425 but can't install any drives. Would anyone know if this is likely due to the non-genuine power supply or if there is potentially a problem with the NAS or the drive?

I bought a $4000 NAS system from QNAP Systems (QNAP TS-1277-1700 with 64GB of RAM, 5 HDD in RAID6) The main reason for paying so much was to obtain "peace of mind". This past weekend (after http://plex.tv announced that they will no longer support camera upload) I decided to try out QuMagie from QNAP Systems. This was the start of a nightmare. I have about 250k pictures. QuMagie needs to index all of them. One problem is that you cannot tell QuMagie not to use the system volume and while doing the indexing the system volume ran out of space. This created havoc in the system. The Sunday backup failed for that day and it seems that further backups have now been corrupted as I see 2 problems: 1. I cannot select (or unselect) my pictures folder for backup. 2. I see pictures files in folders that have been moved to a different folder, so now the backup is out of date with the source data. But the problems did not stop there. I decided to disable QuMagie in the system to see if I can recover backups. It worked; the Monday backup was able to complete. However, late in Monday night I received the following notification: "NAS Notification NAS Name: nas Severity: Warning Date/Time: 2021/03/22 23:55:40 App Name: Security Category: Security Level Message: [Security] Added IP address "192.168.1.1" to IP block list. Duration: for 5 minutes.” 192.168.1.1 is the address of my router. This basically means that the NAS is thinking that is under attack from the network router. So this means, that while the system was thinking it was under attack, I had no way to access the system until I waited 5 minutes. The problem is that the IP was being blocked every 30 seconds or every minute. So, from late Monday night until early Tueday, I had no access to my NAS. I notice that in addition to the router, the IP of my wife phone and the IP oof my phone was also being blocked. So, it hit me that the cause was probably because I left the mobile apps for QuMagie installed in my wife phone and my phone. So, I uninstalled QuMagie from both my phones and disabled the IP blocking feature in QTS (At this point in time I don’t trust any security feature from QNAP) I have opened multiple tickets with QNAP support and I am still awaiting for any kind of acknowledgement or resolution. I would appreciate if LLT could raise awareness of this issue, and I willing to give you access to all my logs and support tickets and provide all the documentation that LLT needs. My conclusion is that I will be looking into moving my NAS away from QNAP and move to another ecosystem, I simply do not trust QNAP with my data. And you should also not trust your data with an operating system that have such serious problems. Thanks for listening, Oscar

Ok so I am looking to upgrade my current Synology with something that has the hardware to get my through the next few years. I use it for data backup, VPN, Plex media, and in the future going to host a website from it as well (Low traffic). With the Synology the software has been easy to use and setup wasn't complex. However from what I have read Qnap has had some difficulties in that area in the past. What do you all recommend between these two options and why? #1 - QNAP TS-473A-8G-US 4 Bay High-Speed #2 - Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS920+ Both have the Dual M.2 PCIe Gen 3 NVMe SSD slots enable cache acceleration or SSD storage pools for improved performance which is one of the reasons I want to make the switch.

Apologies in advance if this is formatted wrong but the community should know about this. Summary In short there is an ongoing global Ransomware attack affecting QNAP devices using a remote access exploit. Files are being are encrypted via password protected 7-Zip Files. Quotes My thoughts More posting this as a PSA style post since there will be people affected such as a person who I was beta-testing for. You can find there thoughts here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_4p68lDWfA (Language warning as he is less than happy) In short they are far from impressed that this was first an exploit in the first place and that his NAS was internet facing without his knowledge. So, I recently bought a QNAP TS-473A and also a QNAP QXP-T32P.When I wanted to install the card I realised that I messed up.The card does not match the PCIE slot on the NAS.The PCIe port on the NAS are x4 Gen3, two of them but don't have that first part. So the card fits in the slot but the first part of the card remains unconnected ( in air ).My question is...Can I hack it? Can I connect with the X1 cable the first part of the card and put the other side of the cable in the second slot? Do I risk burning the card or the nas? I can't manage to figure out hot this works regarding powering. The last pictures are from QNAP TVS-1288X which is the nas that the card was designed for. This NAS also cost around 3000+ euro and mine was around 600 euro, so a big difference. Any engineer advise would be highly appreciated as this is the only solution for having a DAS / NAS configuration at this price.

So, like many others with a qnap NAS, all my files got encrypted by deadbolt attack. before the attack to protect the important parts of my data i built an automatic sync(with qsync) between the NAS and 2 computers. that was very comfortable since any change in one of the computers would auto-sync to the nas and the 2nd computer. so I innocently thought that I was protected from anything. if something happen to the nas or the computers I have 2 more backups. but that were deadbolt rocked my world. when it attacked the nas the automatic sync had automatically synced the encrypted files to the 2 computers... destroying my backups... so now after a long time of recovery (i managed in some ways to recover some data) I'm thinking about how to step up now. how do I sync my systems so that won't happen again. will I have to do a manual sync each time? my nas doesn't have a RAID since i don't have much space. (would that even helped? or would the files on the raid would also be encrypted). how do you sync between your systems? worth to note that I work on the 2 computers and would like that files on them will be up to date. Thanks for the advice! My device: Qnap TS - 228A

Hi, I was wanting to run a Lan cache to store all my steam/origin/epic games on. I have a qnap ts253b which has an Intel celeron J3455. It has 4 cores/4 threads. It also has 8gb ram running in dual channel. Would the J3455 be enough to also run in the qnap? Also if anyone has any guides how to run Lan cache on qnap that would be great. Thank you!

I have a qnap and I want to run a steam cache server on it. I understand that the more efficient way to run it would be thru Container Station via Docker. I was able to download Ubuntu but that's as far as I made it. I am stuck. Does anyone know how to run steam cache/lan cache on qnap? I know I can always use Ubuntu in a VM but would prefer the more efficient method of Docker. Thanks,

I just ordered a QNAP TS-873A 8G today as is it was on sale for singles day (11.11 in China). I will be going 8x18TB eventually but I would like to stager the cost. Can I start with 4x18tb and add another 4 drives when space is needed, and going from RAIDZ1 to RAIDZ2? Is 16GB of DDR4 ECC memory enough and does the memory speed matter? Will I benefit from adding 1 or 2 m.2 drives? Usage is primarily plex but will use it as storage for work-related media.

I’ve got a triple system build into the same PC case: - Windows System - Hackintosh System - NAS System My NAS System is a LattePanda 3 Delta with Windows Server 2016 installed. The storage drives are NVMe SSDs. All 3 systems are hooked up together via Ethernet onto a QNAP QSW-1105-5T. I can connect and access the files instantly, but the issue starts with the transfer of high res photos and videos. Whenever I attempt to transfer any of these photo and video files from say the Windows System into the NAS system, the photos and videos become distorted (blurry, colourful lines, jagged). Transferring an existing video or photo from the NAS system to the Windows system doesn’t have the same problem. If I plugged a USB drive straight into the LattePanda (NAS system) and transferred media files, there are no issues either. Does anyone know why this happens and how I can fix it? Thanks in advance!

plex Plex & Qnap backups (Need a white knight)
James Furie posted a topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Hi Folks Need some help here. I want to make a backup of The FULL Plex database which includes images, metadata, Info ect. (Actual Media has several backups). As I understand it Plex does not update the files directly, Everything is held in the database and if this is corrupted you are basically SOL. How can I backup the full Database to and external SSD drive from my Qnap TS-451+ to protect the hours of work about to be poured in to fixing/updating data? Full Disclosure here, The NAS just works and very happy with it, QTS is based on Linux i think but again it works Windows/DOS guy from 3.11 & 6.22 Respectively But Linux it's all as clear as mud and not a tinkerer (maybe getting to old?) So I would need, if you can help and would be kind enough detailed "A to B to C" instructions that would be spiffing indeed. I have tried using help but again OLD as the kids say is there an app for that? Thanks for your time and any assistance you can offer. James (LLAP)- 1 reply

Hi All, I'm looking at creating a IP CCTV setup for a friend for his business, and was wondering if there's any suggestions or concerns that may be present. The list of the equipment is as follows: http://amzn.eu/78ywW3x I'm going to be using 4 x WD Purple Drives and 6 Cameras. I'm using that particular switch so that I can set up link aggregation so there's no bottlenecks. If anyone has used QNAP Surveillance Station, can you access the camera feed outside the network, possibly using 4G whilst using a dynamic external IP address? Does QNAP have their own dynamic DNS service, or do I have to use something like DynDNS or the likes, and will the phone app support that? Thanks, J

Hello! I need some help with my multi media infrastructure. At the moment i have a Qnap TS-251 with 3TB storage and 4GB RAM connected to my network. This NAS contains all of my TVshows and movies. Also connected to my network is an HP Probook 6550b laptop. This laptop is running Plex media server for my three TVs (One 4k and two full HD). I'm noticing that my laptop is not fast enough to encode more than two HD streams. If i stream more the movies start to buffer. I want to replace my latop but i'm not really sure with what. What does Plex need to encode fast? is it smart to just get a server instead of a NAS? Don't know if it makes any difference but i live in the Netherlands and my budget is around €500,-. -edit- I have an desktop pc with a 6600k processor, 16GB RAM, AMD R9 280. But i need this for work and gaming so i don't think it's smart to use this for Plex?

QNAP has been making AMD-based NAS for yrs. In Computex 2017, they updated their AMD-based NAS with Ryzen CPU. The NAS is called "TS-1277", under the TS-XX77 series. From the photos it seems to have the same chassis as QNAP's TVS-1282/TVS-1282T NAS, but in a champagne gold color, which is the usual color of QNAP's AMD-based NAS. This NAS has three different models with different Ryzen CPUs, which are Ryzen 7 1700 (8 Core/16 thread), Ryzen 5 1600(6 Core/12 thread), and Ryzen 5 1400(4 Core/8 thread), with supports up to 64GB of ram. Besides the CPU differences, TS-1277's spec is very similar to that of TVS-1282/TVS-1282T, just without the Thunderbolt 3 ports. Pricing and availability is still unknown at this moment, and it is still unknown if there will be any other models under this TS-XX77 series. http://www.tweaktown.com/news/57770/amd-ryzen-powered-qnap-nas-spotted-computex/index.html

Im looking at getting a NAS, i know Linus wouldn't go here, but i need one for file storage across my network. Im gonna be backing up my Music and some video there, as well as placing all my photos and using it as a server to be able to stream and view all of that on the move on my iPhone. However i am looking at getting a IP Camera or two in/around my house as the neighbours may be getting a extension and will be making security a harder thing for our home, at first I'm planning on a single camera inside with maybe a dummy box outside. As for machines hitting it, it will be my main gaming machine, my HTPC and my MacBook and a couple of iPhones and iPads as well. I have a budget of around £1,000, maybe a little more if the correct is a little more, I'm excluding drives as ill probably be throwing in a couple of 3TB WD Reds to start with, then adding more and more, larger drives as i need to do so. However I am interested in M.2/SSD cache-ing and Ram upgrades at a later date, even a CPU update if you can do that? I like the look of the Synology User Interface in its software, but i like the ease of use of the QNAP units, and am torn to which to get, id like either a 5, 6 or 8 bay unit. Thanks in advance.

Hello LTT users, I was wondering if I could get some of you to chime in on my setup, Upon setup of the QNAP TVS-682T in a RAID5 configuration I have been getting (seemingly) slow read & write speeds over Thunderbolt and Gigabit Ethernet, for example a 75.29GB folder takes 20-30 minutes to transfer to the NAS over either Gigabit Ethernet or Thunderbolt. I am using a 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar at the moment for transfer testing over USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet and Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2, but the NAS will be setup for Windows machines as well. Currently the following drives are installed: (4) 4TB Western Digital Red 7200 rpm (2) 1TB Samsung 850 Pro (2) 1TB Samsung 960 Evo A couple more items to note: The M.2 drives are not seen by the QNAP (I checked the morning of this post and the 960 Evo is not listed as a compatible drive on QNAP's website, I have a feeling this is why they are not found by the QNAP) QNAP Compatibility Webpage I attempted to restore the unit to it's factory settings which reformatted the drives, however it did not have me re-configure the RAID so I presume I simply reformatted the drives and left everything else alone. I have conducted these tests both during and after the QNAP optimization has completed with similar results. Does anyone here have any experience with configuring and optimizing a QNAP NAS system in case I am missing something? Thank you very much for your time and advice! -Benjamin

Hi, I did some searching, but found nothing that really says yes or no. Just presumptions, but no real test. I'm getting a new QNAP NAS (TS-251A) in a few days and want to virtualize SteamOS on it. So im hoping to stream Steam games over it on the TV, without the need of a more power hungry HTPC. The NAS supports a virtualisation station and even Docker, so I think installing SteamOS should be no problem. It should have enough power to run the stream right? It comes with 4GB RAM, maybe I'll upgrade it to 8. For control I would use a wireless gamepad. The NAS will be connected direct to the TV with HDMI, and to the network with Cat.7 cables. So I have the infrastructure, but does streaming perform well enough on it?

Good Morning Everyone, I've got a predicament i'm hoping someone more experienced can help out with. I have two setups to test our web dev stuff at home with: 1) Straight ubuntu server connected via lan/wifi; and 2) QNAP NAS with ubuntu installed connected via lan/wifi. Both Setups use same router with relevant ports forwarded to local machines, and no firewall blocking. When I create a elixir/phoenix app and run it on setup #1, i can see it locally on all machines, however, when i run it on setup #2 I cannot access the pages at all ("localhost:4000/"), but on the actual ubuntu desktop you can. If it helps wittle it down a bit further, i'm also unable to SSH in to the QNAP/ubuntu setup when connected either externally or internally, request always timesout. anyone have experience serving web apps locally with qnap? Thanks in advance

I'm looking for an easy and simple way to back up and store my media files. I just want to be able to access them from any whereand have a decent upload/download speed. I'm not worried about being able to stream cause my media files usually don't work well with streaming and simplicity. Itried a qnap 451+ but I had nothing but headaches and even tech support couldn't find out why I was having the issue. (Couldn't access files and even though all my http security settings where on could not make a secure connection to Nas. Also link aggration didn't work.) What would be some other good solutions. I haven't tried free as but heard it could be very expensive. ($700 - $1000 Canadian) Thanks

So I have an old QNAP 10 bay 1079 Pro. I brought it home from work and need to figure out the best way to configure my set up. I have an editing PC upstairs and a streaming PC ( to stream to my website ) downstairs. I need to put the NAS downstairs as there is no room to put upstairs. Is there a way for me to store my final edited videos from my upstairs pc to the qnap downstairs without running wires through the ceiling? I just would like my whole system to run fast and efficient but is hard due to being so late into this setup. Any recommendations as to getting my final edited videos into some kind of storage and then transfered into my streaming pc without moving my editing pc and without cutting holes into walls?

QNAP TR-002 vs QNAP TS-431P. I don't plan to connect it to home network, as i don't have an home network. So could the TS-431 act as a DAS? Could i directly connect it to my PC over ethernet? @Den-Fi If i can connect the TS-431 to my pc over gigabit ethernet that would be really cool, that way i don't use up an usb port, and the NAS/DAS can be further away from my pc. (but only 125mb/s tho) If the TS-431 also can be connected to pc over USB that would work too. The plusses for both: TR-002 +black +meant to be used as das +simpler +smaller +cheaper -only 2 drive bays TS-431 +4bay +can act as a NAS (hopefully as a DAS too) +better hardware -bigger -more expensive (only a bit thought) -no usb 3.2, only 3.0 +but 3 usb ports, so you can connect external hdds to it MY plan right now would be to go with TR-002, 12TB (MAX 32TB as of now) of storage is good enough for me right now, and i could always connect the TR-002 to an QNAP NAS later on.
