Hi Guys, I am trying to move out of ESXi (licensing and support is killing me) and into Proxmox but I dont have another host to install Proxmox and migrate the VMs. I use an IBM x3550 server with a LSI RAID controller for storage. 1) Is there anyway where I can remove ESXi and install Proxmox and connect it to storage? 2) I use Veritas Backup Exec for backups. Can I backup the ESXi VMs and restore onto Proxmox? 3) Can I do a Proxmox VM on ESXi and migrate all the VMs and then dump Proxmox onto the bare metal? Please advise. Best regards, Gdcrocx
  2. Hey guys, i've got a question. I want to make a samba share on a vm with 2x8 TB Drives in Raid 1. I've got a PERC 6/i mit 256 MB Cache (3G SAS / 3G SATA) Raid Controller but unfortunately i only have money for one 8 TB drive at the moment. Is it possible to configure a Raid 1 with only 1 drive (for now) so i can use it as my network drive and later when i've got enough money for another one i can just put it in and it will rebuild the raid instead of needing to delete my files from the drive to create a raid again with 2 drives again?   3. Hi, I need a lot of different Mac OS (X) versions on hand for different software only running on those versions. For now I am just using an external SSD with my VMs for Mac OS X 10.4/5/6/7/8/9/10/11/12/13/14/15 which run virtualized in Proxmox. While the performance is pretty good this way, it is annoying to always shut down the VMs, unplug the SSD and move it over to another Computer when I want to access the VMs from a different Workstation. Since I'm also reworking my Server at this moment to run Proxmox for my Linux VMs I though of moving my Mac instances over to Proxmox. I'm probably pretty spoiled by the performance and ease of use with Parallels so I'm looking for a decent Remote Access Tool for those VMs. Proxmox's NoVNC just plain sucks (also no shared Clipboard). So far I tried using the built-in Screensharing in Mac OS and connect from another mac with the built-in VNC Viewer which does work, share clipboards and I can even drag and drop files, but it shows both cursors (the "virtual" one and the real one) and the virtual one is lagging behind a lot, so the experience is suboptimal. Also, colors look pretty poor. Using RealVNC's VNC Connect with Mac OS's VNC Server is a better experience, image quality is better and I only have one mouse. Moving windows or images (creating a fast changing image) is lagging behind and is showing the progressive scan. Then I tried Parallels Web Access which (so far) has the best framerate, but has a high latency and is noticably compressed (which makes sense since it streams over their servers). What other options are there that allow clipboard sharing and have a good performance? Preferrably no Cloud-based solutions. Bandwith usage within the home network doesn't matter and shouldn't be a factory when deciding on a solution. I do not have issues with paid software if it delivers good results. So far my RealVNC version delivers the best performance and experience. Oh and then there is one more option... Parallels RAS (Remote Application Server). I havent looked into that a lot as it is not very cheap and has an annual subscription. Has anyone tried that and how does it work? Or do you have other ideas on how to accomplish this task? Maybe other hypervisors that support remote desktop natively?   4. Hello, So I am trying to install Proxmox 6.0 on a home server. When I go through the installation process, I receive this error upon installation: "unable to create bios_boot partition on '/dev/nvme0n1'" I have tried updating the bios, using different versions of Proxmox, and even different USB drives for the installer. Can anyone help with this? Specs for the server are: Mobo: MSI B450M Pro-M2 (MS-7B84) CPU: Ryzen 3 2200G RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengence LPX 2400MHz SSD: Sabrent 256GB Rocket NVMe PCIe M.2 2280
  5. Hey peeps! Now i know there is a very similar topic from another guy but i don't want to hijack his thread so here is my own... I needs some suggestions as to what would be the best solution to my new multi purpose server... I have a few requirements... 1. Needs to run plex 2. Needs to some kind of NVR solution... for 3-7 cams 3. Some kind of raid solution/NAS solution (storage for plex content, NVR storage and so on..) 4. maybe run a few vm's ( hackingtosh, steam cache server (maybe)) Hardware i have the following.. Cpu: Ryzen 1700 Ram: 16GB - maybe upgrade to 32gb if needed SDD: 1x 120GB SSD HDD: 5x 8TB HDD for some kind of raid configuration... pssst (no raid/hba card installed) Now... should i install some baremetal debian/windows and then raid the 5 HDDS? and do as much as possible on baremetal and then a hyperviser on top to fix remaining issues? or should i go hyperviser from the start such proxmox, esxi? and then VM each task from my needs? How should i handle the NAS/raid solution?? I just installed proxmox working with a working xpenology vm on top.. is this ideal way to handle the disk situation and then make other VM's that just dumps data to that?.. and what about the hot topics/debated solutions like freeNAS & unraid...

  7. I have been a fan of Docker for a while now and run my current home server using Docker compose. At the moment I run Plex, qBittorent, an IRC client, Calibre-Web, and a few miscellaneous services. I have a new "server" arriving soon and being I have already build a home server with Docker (I make videos as well), I thought I might explore other options for home servers. That is when I landed on Proxmox, a free and open alternative to ESXI The new server will likely run with RAID1-Z but other than that there are no major requirements, I mention this because it may add extra challenges to Proxmox. Proxmox would allow me to create VMs which might be a handy feature but I want to determine if that is actually useful. I had considered moving Plex to a dedicated VM but the more I think about it, im not sure this offers any benefit, and in fact may be more of a hindrance. Being you can limit resources on Docker I am thinking of allowing plex to access more resources when required would be best. https://docs.docker.com/config/containers/resource_constraints/ So to be honest, I had mostly considered changing my setup simply to learn another system and create another video, but the more I learn the more I think Docker was the best choice from the start. Can anyone here make an argument for switching to Proxmox? Pros of Docker: - Simple to update applications - Ability to migrate script - Compose scripts are easily manageable / edited - Resource sharing Pros of Proxmox: - Web-based portal - KVM emulation (if this is actually a pro) - ???

  9. So... I've recently replaced my FX8350 with an Intel CPU. I now have a full PC worth of parts from upgrading over the years, a spare AM3+ motherboard, as well as an old free PC I got from work. So I wanted to make use of this. I thought of setting up a PC for virtual machines, as well as a machine as a local file server all as a little project of my own. I knew that I would have to buy hardware to make it work since the PC from work only has 4 SATA ports, and I planned to use it as the file server. As well, the old PC case is too small for an ATX board. Then I could use the 8 core FX8350 for VMs, so I can dedicate more cores to VMs. But then I got thinking... I was thinking of Linus' "Under $150 CPU, Motherboard, 16GB RAM" video from last December. I could probably buy a decent server-grade CPU / mobo / RAM combo from ebay and throw that in the mix. And then I got thinking about that... Would I be better to use the FX8350 for the VM PC, or using old Intel server hardware for VMs? Also, do all old server motherboards that Linus talks about have non-standard mounting holes? If so, then that's probably not a good idea...So here's the question.. Should I:A. Just buy a cheap AM3 CPU and a new case to use for FreeNAS and use my full system of spare parts for the VM PC?B. Buy an old Intel server CPU and board and a new case for FreeNAS and use my full system of spare parts for the VM PC?C. Switch around the roles in part B.D. Buy a cheap i3 CPU and motherboard for FreeNAS and use my full system of spare parts for the VM PC?For storage I plan on using give or take 5 1TB drives in RAID 5. The reason for this is I can get them for free from work, which is the only reason why I'm going through with this. Normally I would use higher capacity drives, but hey, they're free.Another thing, I was looking at the FreeNAS system requirements, and it says Intel is highly recommended... Why is this?   10. Hello experts. We would like to build up a training/test server where a virtual hosting software would be running. Most probably something KVM based like Proxmox or Openstack. We are planing to run there up to 20-30 virtual machines at a time with various performance requirements ranging from single core up to 6-cores setups.   11. So I've wanted to set up my own file server, as well as a better machine to run VMs, for a while now as a personal project. I could run both on one machine, but I pretty much have an entire spare PC from upgrading my current rig. As well I have an old desktop from ~2011 from work that we have no use for (i3 2120, 8GB), which I'm currently using to run VMs, altho it's not getting much use right now. As well, I can probably get around 5 1TB drives from work (pulled from new PCs, replaced with SSDs), which I intended to use in RAID 5 for the FS. I just ordered a 6600k, so I can use the FX8350 currently in my system, which will give me an entire extra PC in parts. Here's what I have to work with: Full system, in parts (including case), extra AM3+ mobo (ASUS M5A97 R2.0) Dell Precision T1600 (running ProxMox for VMs right now) 5x 1TB drives (new) Regardless, I'd have to buy hardware to make it work. I'm thinking I should buy an AM3 CPU from ebay and a $50 case (extra board is ATX, T1600 is mATX) and use the rest of the hardware from the T1600. My other option would be to buy a RAID card, but I don't know much about them and what's good / reliable (would I need a 6 port card, or could I use onboard ports alongside the RAID card?). Plus, I believe an average one would cost a fair bit (or am I wrong?). Now for the software side of things... I'm thinking FreeNAS with ZFS (I'd have enough RAM). As for the VMs, I'm thinking ProxMox again. I also wanted to run a Plex server on the VM PC, could I use the file server as the storage for it? Or does it have to be local to the Plex app? Also, what would be the recommended OS to run Plex on? I'd assume Linux, but I don't know very much about the different distributions, as well I have very little experience with it in general. I would use Windows, but that uses a lot more resources, and I don't want any issues when watching something. I'm a noob when it comes to things like these, so sorry for the stupid questions.   12. So at the school I go to I help with Network Management. We've got a Proxmox VM machine with several different virtual servers on it. The UniFi controller that is installed on it from the previous Network Manager is way out of date. She neglected the servers, network. No security updates were ever done, cheap refurb machines kept getting bought and half the campus and servers were still on XP. In just four months since the new Director of Technology (My friend) and me came in we have gotten rid of most of the old 2003 servers and gone to 2012 and linux machines such as FreeNAS and PfSense and such. All the desktops are either OS X or Windows 7 or 10 now and we've revamped the server rooms with Smart-UPS and much needed cable management. However, the 30 or so Ubiquiti UAP's that we have are running on the way out of date management console. Neither of us know exactly how to install the new Linux UniFi console using ONLY console mode on the Promox virtual server since it is a headless unit. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
  13. Saw ampache mentioned somewhere so I decided to fire up a virtual machine on my proxmox server and give it a try. Nice use of my old music collection. It seems it's automatic thumbnail getting feature isnt perfect. lol I definitely recommend it.
  14. Hello all I've been having some issues with my proxmox setup. After some hours of reading about PCI passthru / wlan bridging I thought I would see if someone out there had any experience with this. I have a proxmox box with one onboard ethernet and one PCI wireless N card. I would like to use the wireless card with my vms to play around and ultimately set up a pfsense / squid proxy on one. Since I do not have 2 eth NICs so I thought it might be possible to either a) bridge the wlan NIC to one of my routers and the LAN to the ethernet and a switch. I guess it would help with a breakdown of topography ISP MODEM-> ASUSRT (dd-wrt)->Wireless bridge (ASUSRT) -> Linksys switch->LAN Currently the second ASUSRT is going into the proxmox box and the switch which supplies a few boxes. Does anyone have any suggestions / experience with wlan and proxmox? Any topographical suggestions for improvement? The reason for the bridge / extension on the current ASUSRT's is because my house is some distance from the ISP's modem / microwave dish so I had to extend my network. Any thoughts on getting my PCI wireless card available in proxmox? Any help or ideas would be much appreceated
  15. When I setup my virtual machine host I wasnt really worried about disk performance, so i threw an extra 500GB generic drive in it. However, now that i am running both Windows Server and Linux, MYSQL, web servers, etc. Now the drive has just about reached the end of its usable life, and it simply cant keep up with the demands of the many hosts it runs. I need to upgrade my storage solution. My budget is about $500, but less is better. Should i run a RAID 10 array of (4) hard drives, or a RAID 1 array of (2) SSD's? Or should i go for PCIE storage and be sure to keep a backup? Thanks in advance, ~Judah
  16. Trying to find the best solution to get my Proxmox VE box to communicate with FreeNAS storage. From what I have read so far this is what I came up with. LACP (Link Aggregation) Switch and NICs Dual port Intel Gigabit NICs (Bonding the two ports) Enable Jumbo Frames (MTU=9000) Use an iSCSI target instead of NFS Does this sound like the ideal solution without going 10Gb? It would be great to hear from someone with a similar setup. Also need help deciding on a switch, if this solution is the way to go. Preferably a 8 to 16 port. Thanks in advance!

  18. I'm trying to install Proxmox and connect the to the web GUI, but I'm having some issues... Motherboard is Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 Rev. 4.0. Using onboard NIC, I configured it to be 192.168.1.253, /24, and the DG and DNS 192.168.1.1, which is my router. I did notice that the default IP was 192.168.100.x, which is a totally different subnet. After installation, I logged in and tried to connect to the web GUI but wasn't able to. Tried to ping gateway and wasn't able to. Tried to ping the PC and nothing. I played around with it for a bit, and still nothing. Bought a $25 PCI (not express) NIC at a local store and immediately noticed a difference, the default IP was on the .1.x subnet, which is already a big improvement. Got it installed, logged in, and I was finally able to ping the default gateway. HOWEVER -- it was not consistent. It would have a few successful pings, then drops for a few, and back and forth. Same going from my PC to the VM PC, it was intermittent. So far I have tried with the latest version of Proxmox, 4.4, as well as 4.3. I wasn't sure if I should post this in the Network subforum or the virtualization subforum, but since it's a networking issue I figured it'd be best here. Any help is greatly appreciated!   19. I have being trying to get my proxmox server (just 1) to access and use a nfs share I made for it in freenas. I've added its ip to the allowed clients and done a bunch of googling on and cant work out why proxmox can access the share. proxmox doesn't support username/pwd on nfs shares but according to freenas they don't require a pwd to use a nfs share just be on the authrized ips list. I can't seem to find anyone else with this problem. I also have tried changing the ip of the proxmox server still nothing. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

So I was thinking about setting up some Intel NUCs (or any other Microcomputer) that would have a like Arch Linux set up where when you wake it up it shows up with a menu with VMs and real machines. So my problem when a family member would want to do some stuff on Windows 7 for making a photo book or whatever, they could open up their VM and Iit would be seamless for them. How would I add the capability to have USB ports on the NUC act like they were physically attached to the VM(i.e when she plugs in a usb into the NUC it automatically shows up on the VM) or any other I/O for that matter? I have/will have the follwing Dell Poweredge 2950 running Proxmox , with Intel NUC Clients running Arch Linux.

Just a generalized overview of what you have at home. I'm at work and when I get home I'll get a little more detailed about my own. Really not sure how to go about this but very curious about people's @home setups, which I think is part of the curiosity/interest in the NAS thread. 1x Dell C1100 ($400 came with a 3TB green and the below) 2x 5520, 32gb DDR3 ECC, 1x 500gb SSD, quad-port nic OS: ESXI 5.5 (flash drive) VMs: vCenter 5.5 (Windows 2012r2), Domain Controller, vmware Horizon 6, Exchange 2013, SQL 2014, and a "closed" network where I'm testing sophos UTM / arch linux / unRaid (bitch to deal with as a vm) 1x IBM x3650 m2 ($230 came with a single 146gb 15k SAS drive and the below) 2x 5520, 32gb DDR3 ECC - no drives, using ISCSI targets OS: Will be ESXI 5.5 - just got this server :-) might try out Linux KVM / proxmox 1x Custom Built (~$1500 so far I think) 1x G1610, 32gb DDR3 ECC, 5x 4TB Seagate Desktop drives, 4x 3TB WD Red, 1x 160gb Intel SSD OS: FreeNAS 9.3 - Currently only using a CIFS share and 2 iSCSI targets, no jails or VMs. Raid: m1015 flashed in IT | 5x 4TB - RaidZ1 "Primary" pool, 4x 3TB Raidz2 "Backup" pool. - data is replicated from Primary to Backup nightly (only very important things)

This summer I intend to start a cluster with a combination of desktops I find on Craigslist and a some I build myself for a rendering rig as I do a lot of premiere, photoshop, and a BUNCH of 3D modeling/animation. I have been looking through videos and forums for a few weeks now with SO MANY QUESTIONS about cluster computing and had almost none of them adequately answered. Here are a few. 1.) Can multiple gpu's be passed through from separate systems? not for SLI, but for separate use, like CUDA. 2.) Can different nodes have different CPU vendors? (Ex: 3 with Intel, 2 with AMD) 3.) Cores or clocks? Should i rather get fx-6300's for more cores or pentium g3258's for overclocking/price (for multiple nodes) 4.) Proxmox or Xenserver? Xenserver DEFINITELY wins when it comes to simplicity and user friendliness, Proxmox seems like it has more room for advanced functionality and that sexy ability to access from the internet if forwarded correctly. 5.) With multiple cpus from diff vendors, in the VM, what would the cpu come up as (GenericXenCPU1?) and what drivers would I need? one last question that doesn't really have to do with me, but more with everyone else. 7.) Why doesn't everyone use cluster computing? I see all these people who get a new rig and throw the old one in an old room to rot. Why not make them nodes and use them both? Hope the forums can help, as this is my first non-giveaway-related post here even though ive been watching LMG since its creation.

Hi i need to extend the /var/lib/vz to the 4 hard drives i got so i can have a directory for openvz and vms and iso i have 4 hdds a but i have now go them partitions when i click osd nothing happend i tryed doing cfdisk and fdisk /dev/sdb and lvm and it make it say partition and dont extend it any help thanks if you need anything else just ask also i can make an account
  24. I have been trying to setup PCI passthrough on an HP Z620 System and am getting a system crash and reset if I install AMD drivers on the virtual machine that the AMD graphics is passed to. This is the error I get. (Picture attached) Details: OS = Proxmox Virtual Machine = Windows 10 System = HP z620 GPU = AMD R9 290 CPU = Xeon E5 2620 Does anyone have any idea how to either disable the reset on error function or fix this issue?
  25. So I'm planning out the eventual deployment of an all-in-one home server that will (ideally) handle both virtualization and ZFS-based file-storage in one box. The options I have considered so far are Windows Server 2016 (HyperV & FreeNAS VM for file storage), Proxmox VE (KVM, LXC containers and native ZFS w/ additional Samba sharing), or FreeNAS 11 (native ZFS and excellent file sharing w/ bhyve hypervisor as of FN 11). I have a license for Server 2016 already, and the other two options are free and open-source, so the cost barrier isn't a big deal. To me, Freenas has the best storage management interface, but (currently) the worst virtualization management interface (GUI is weak, command-line is likely better but more of a hassle); Proxmox has great native virtualization and container support but requires some complicated work to setup SMB sharing; and Windows Server 2016 is (AFAIK) more resource intensive as a host, but will allow me to run many Server 2016 VMs, and I'm much more familiar with HyperV. Additionally, I mostly plan on running Linux VMs/containers, seeing as they are open-source and I find them fun to learn! If anybody has some experience or perspective here, I would greatly appreciate your input!
