  1. I am a full-time sophomore undergraduate student at UAlbany. I am a Major in Informatics with a Concentration in Software Development and a Minor in Computer Science. If you wanna be technical, it's basically a Computer Science Major, but with nearly no math, a couple less Computer Science classes, and a plethora of Information Technology type of classes (web development, databases, emerging trends in tech, etc.). I am currently taking the CSI 333 Course, "Hardware/Software Interface", with Professor Jonathan Muckle (very cool guy by the way). Before this class, I mostly developed websites using JavaScript and plenty of other stuff (Node, Express, etc.) but did a little Java for class. I also knew how to build a computer and how to solve a fair amount of Windows issues (thanks, Google ). Going into this class, all I knew is that we would learn about how hardware and software interact and that we would be learning C. What I did not know? Well, I'll tell you. Our first week, we were learning Binary, Hex, and basic assembly using MIPS. He assigned us to our $72 textbooks through zybooks. Zybooks, first of all, is one of the best things of this class. He compiled two textbooks together, and you are assigned participation activities within the reading. The readings themselves aren't terribly long, maybe a couple pages, but they're interactive, not buggy, and just... cool! At this point, about four weeks in, I already know how to do basic assembly instructions and I can tell you that the number 426 in binary, off the top of my head, is 9 bits of 110101010. Being a huge computer fan for the past decade ever since I was about 9 years old, finally starting to understand the core of what's going on it simply ridiculously awesome and mind-blowing. Here's the example I stopped at to write this: Look familiar in any way? Well here's a little excerpt too: Here's a really cool diagram. I will say this. If you haven't gone to college or are currently there but undecided, I really implore you to pursue a career in Information Technology and/or Computer Science/Computer Engineering if you already liked this stuff as a kid and could see yourself doing it in the future. I recommend that if you don't know how to program, that you start with something like Python or JavaScript and work yourself up from there. Never built a computer?... Uhh, wait a little bit so the market can slow down... or, if you want, go find some eBay listings. Scrapyard Wars from LTT themselves should be a good enough guide. For reference, if you want to check it out, here are the two books that the professor mashed together. Thank you for reading through my mental diarrhea. I hope this was fun.
  2. Can Any One Tell Me What This Does?

    Hi Can Someone Please Tell Me What This Does I Have A Very Brief Understanding Of Code? [STAThread] public static void Main() { string name = MyProject.Computer.Name; string str2 = "False"; int[] numArray = new int[5]; string str4 = ""; Console.WriteLine("Computer Name: " + name); if (name.Length != 7) { str2 = "Invalid PC Name to set password (LEN<>7)"; } if (!name.ToUpper().Contains("NT-")) { str2 = "Invalid PC Name to set password (CONT=NT-)"; } if (str2 == "False") { try { int num3; string str3 = Strings.Split(name, "-", -1, CompareMethod.Binary)[1]; int index = 0; do { numArray[index] = Conversions.ToInteger(str3.Substring(index, 1)); index++; num3 = 3; } while (index <= num3); int num = (numArray[2] + numArray[3]) * 2; if (num < 10) { str4 = "0" + Conversions.ToString(num); } else { str4 = Conversions.ToString(num); } str4 = str4 + "I4ai;#"; object[] arguments = new object[] { str4 }; bool[] copyBack = new bool[] { true }; NewLateBinding.LateCall(RuntimeHelpers.GetObjectValue(Interaction.GetObject("WinNT://./Administrator,user", null)), null, "SetPassword", arguments, null, null, copyBack, true); if (copyBack[0]) { str4 = (string) Conversions.ChangeType(RuntimeHelpers.GetObjectValue(arguments[0]), typeof(string)); } Console.WriteLine("Password Set"); } catch (Exception exception1) { ProjectData.SetProjectError(exception1); Exception exception = exception1; Console.WriteLine("Failed to set new password:"); Console.WriteLine(exception.ToString()); ProjectData.ClearProjectError(); } } else { Console.WriteLine("Failed to set new password:"); Console.WriteLine(str2); } } 5 0x5[STAThread] public static void Main() { string name = MyProject.Computer.Name; string str2 = "False"; int[] numArray = new int[5]; string str4 = ""; Console.WriteLine("Computer Name: " + name); if (name.Length != 7) { str2 = "Invalid PC Name to set password (LEN<>7)"; } if (!name.ToUpper().Contains("NT-")) { str2 = "Invalid PC Name to set password (CONT=NT-)"; } if (str2 == "False") { try { int num3; string str3 = Strings.Split(name, "-", -1, CompareMethod.Binary)[1]; int index = 0; do { numArray[index] = Conversions.ToInteger(str3.Substring(index, 1)); index++; num3 = 3; } while (index <= num3); int num = (numArray[2] + numArray[3]) * 2; if (num < 10) { str4 = "0" + Conversions.ToString(num); } else { str4 = Conversions.ToString(num); } str4 = str4 + "I4ai;#"; object[] arguments = new object[] { str4 }; bool[] copyBack = new bool[] { true }; NewLateBinding.LateCall(RuntimeHelpers.GetObjectValue(Interaction.GetObject("WinNT://./Administrator,user", null)), null, "SetPassword", arguments, null, null, copyBack, true); if (copyBack[0]) { str4 = (string) Conversions.ChangeType(RuntimeHelpers.GetObjectValue(arguments[0]), typeof(string)); } Console.WriteLine("Password Set"); } catch (Exception exception1) { ProjectData.SetProjectError(exception1); Exception exception = exception1; Console.WriteLine("Failed to set new password:"); Console.WriteLine(exception.ToString()); ProjectData.ClearProjectError(); } } else { Console.WriteLine("Failed to set new password:"); Console.WriteLine(str2); } }
  3. New programming rig

    Hi! No gaming. Only programming (C, C++, Cuda, Tensorflow, OpenCV), standard university stuff and other day-to-day things. Budget +/- 1000€. Reusing 8GB RAM, until prices are back to normal. Then I will buy a decent 16GB kit. Old Gainward GTX 970 GPU. New WD Red NASware 3TB HDD. Overclocking? If overclocking possible, probably. If not, doesn't matter. No OS needed, will be using Linux. AMD option: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/MRmCmq Intel: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NMWcCb I have 8GB RAM, which I will use until prices go back to normal. Later I will buy 16GB kit. I also have GTX 970 which I do not plan to change. Further more, I have an additional HDD. Ignore prices listed by PCPartPicker. AMD option costs 900€, while Intel option costs 955€. AMD option does not include WiFi card which is additional 30€. Also, compatible ram for AMD is probably 10-20€ more expensive. If I were to overclock the AMD processor, I would need a new cooler, but for the first hand I could use the boxed one. Intel option does not include a cooler, as the chosen CPU is tray version. An additional cooler would cost me probably 30€. Intel option has much much better motherboard, it just seems of better quality. It also provides dual PCI m.2 slots. Intel also has a slight advantage of the integrated GPU. I could use it to push video to monitor, while I use my GPU exclusively for computing. I have watched some of the programming benchmarks and it seems that both AMD and Intel CPUs are more or less equivalent. AMD is faster when compiling, but Intel is faster when linking. I believe Intel is more respected brand and I have more trust in it, but I think Intel is more vulnerable by Spectre and Meltdown... So both options cost about the same and as I am pretty happy with both rigs, I have no idea which one to take... Any help appreciated. EDIT: This topic is somewhat linked to:

  5. Javascript puzzle

    I've been practicing a lot of html and javascript recently, and I came across this challenge question. I can't for the life of me figure out why it works and I feel like the answer is very simple. Here it is: What is the output of this code: <html> <head> <title>Test</title> </head> <body> <script type="text/javascript"> var arr = [1,2,3,4]; arr[arr[1]]=5; alert(arr); </script> </body> </html> The answer is 1,2,5,4 but I can't figure out why. arr[1] is the second spot in the array, so the output should be 1,5,3,4 but its not. Does anybody know how this works? It's been bugging me for hours. Thanks!
  6. Before I get started, please note that I am doing this as a part of my classwork. If that bothers you, maybe just give me hints instead Hi, I have just started learning some C++ and am trying to create a program that will ask a user for a single digit integer (1 through 9), print it out, and ask again until the user inputs the character "x" The output I want would look like this: Enter a non-zero integer (or x to quit): 7 Enter a non-zero integer (or x to quit): 3 Enter a non-zero integer (or x to quit): -5 Enter a non-zero integer (or x to quit): -1 Enter a non-zero integer (or x to quit): x Program stopped. You entered 4 integers. 2 of the integers were positive. 2 of the integers were negative. The largest value you entered was 7. The smallest value you entered was -5. The sum of the 4 integers was 4. So far, my program looks like this, but it does not run. I am having problems with the variable type. #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main() { char user_input; cout << "Please enter a number (or x to stop): \n"; cin >> user_input; if (user_input == "x") { cout << "Program stopped"; } else { cout << "Input: " << user_input << "\n"; } return 0; } Any help on this? Should I use a different loop other than if? Any help would be appreciated.
  7. i am starting to learn web development so it would be helpful to know what stuff should i learn and to know if i can use an ipad pro for that
  8. Hi, I've been learning a lot of javascript recently and I began programming a script that would emulate how your starting stats are rolled in Dungeons and Dragons. I've never actually played d&d, but from what my roommates were telling me, your starting stats are acquired by rolling a 6 sided dice 4 times (or rolling 4 six side dice all at once) and then taking the highest three numbers and adding them up together. I programmed that like this: function diceRoll(min, max) { return Math.floor(Math.random() * (max - min + 1) + min); } var rollSet1 = new Array(); rollSet1[0] = diceRoll(1, 6); rollSet1[1] = diceRoll(1, 6); rollSet1[2] = diceRoll(1, 6); rollSet1[3] = diceRoll(1, 6); This simulated rolling the 4 dice. var set1Smol = (Math.min(...rollSet1)); This set the variable: "set1Smol" equal to the smallest number out of the 4 numbers in the array. var stat1 = (rollSet1[0] + rollSet1[1] + rollSet1[2] + rollSet1[3] - set1Smol); And this set the variable: "stat1" equal to the sum of all 4 numbers in the array - the smallest number in the array. I did this for each of the 7 rollSets and put the "stat(x)" variables into a separate array, and then used the Math.min operator to find the smallest number out of all 7 stats. var totalSetSum = new Array(); totalSetSum[0] = stat1; totalSetSum[1] = stat2; totalSetSum[2] = stat3; totalSetSum[3] = stat4; totalSetSum[4] = stat5; totalSetSum[5] = stat6; totalSetSum[6] = stat7; var lowestStat = (Math.min(...totalSetSum)); Now the one thing I couldn't figure out was how to get rid of the smallest number in the totalSetSum array. Right now I have it just printing all 7 stats and then telling you which one is the smallest, but what I would like to do is create a character stat object with 6 properties that are equal to the 6 highest out of the 7 stats. Does anybody know how I would go about programming that? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! Here is a link to my github where I have the full javascript program located.
  9. Hi, I'm in grade 11 in high school and I'm currently taking Computer Science 20. For one of our final assessments, we're asked to find someone that works in any technological field and interview them about 15-ish questions. Is there anyone that is willing to spend around 15-20 minutes in a call or even just through a text channel just answering some questions? The only thing I'd need other than answers to the questions is your first and last name (a fake name can work if you'd prefer that too), the business/company you work for and the job title. I know info is a lot to ask for, so I'd like to thank you for your cooperation.
  10. hey, i'm looking for a decent laptop to take with me to school. I'm using the laptop only, and only for: - Programming (html, css, js, php, python and a little bit of c#) - The only programs it sould run decent (fast loading/switching between apps) are: sublime text, Jetbrain, Visual Studio Code and sometimes a Vmware to test some things on a virtual windows 10 environment) - VLC to watch my series/movies on - browse the web - Been able to handle all this, at a minimum since i will only use this laptop at school at my lessons and at exams (Got my main desktop at home to work on) Since i am a simple student money does not come easy, so i'm looking for something as low as possible (since i still got my powerful main desktop at home where i work the most on) I don't know so much about computer hardware, so i have no idea at what i sould be looking, I'm hoping you can help me out a little bit. Edit: Budged would be a max of 900 euro, but would prefer to go cheaper of course. I'm also from Belgium, Europe. - Arno
  11. Hey guys, Some considerations: I want it for dual-screen mostly since I program a lot and my eyes are constantly tired and dry. I do gaming but casually. Resolution : 1080 Size : 27" Material : I preffer aluminium to plastic but it's not that important. Extras : Borderless is cool for dual monitor but also no that important, my eyes are my concern atm. Features like blue color attenuation are welcome . Ports: 2 HDMI is a plus since I have a Raspberry Pi but I can get a splitter. By the way, does it reduce image quality? I already did some research and came across the following options: Dell SE2717H AOC I2781FH ASUS VX279H-2 Acer R271 AOC I2769V Budget : I can spend as much as 300€ on it. Thank you very much everyone!

  13. Programming in C

    Thought I would post part of a funny convo I had with one of my friends about programming with C. Don't know about you guys but me and everybody I know hates it..
  14. Hello! My friends is interested in small laptop 10-13inch. He also wants a laptop where the < > keys are next to left shift. Does anyone know any such laptops? Thank you!
  15. Hi. I'm really new to programming. I'm still 15 y.o and I wanted to start learning programming since it attracts me. Any guide on how I should start? Let's just say I know nothing about programming and C language. I want to learn how to code using C language. Any suggestions? I recently watched a video on how to use codeblock but I still don't get on how it works or why it works that way.
  16. Hey guys I'm having some trouble with my code to make the player jump and need some assistance, when i press space its like its trying to jump but it doesn't jump, like its restricted. Here is the movement script: public class PlayerMovement : MonoBehaviour { public float maxSpeed = 3f; public float speed = 50f; public float jumpPower = 150f; public bool grounded; private Rigidbody2D Rgb; // Use this for initialization void Start () { Rgb = GetComponent<Rigidbody2D> (); } // Update is called once per frame void Update () { if (Input.GetButtonDown ("Jump") && grounded) { grounded = false; Rgb.AddForce (Vector2.up * jumpPower); } } void FixedUpdate () { float Haxis = Input.GetAxis ("Horizontal"); //moves the player by adding force Rgb.AddForce ((Vector2.right * speed) * Haxis); //limits the players speed in both directions if (Rgb.velocity.x > maxSpeed) { Rgb.velocity = new Vector2 (maxSpeed, Rgb.velocity.y); } else if (Rgb.velocity.x < -maxSpeed) { Rgb.velocity = new Vector2 (-maxSpeed, Rgb.velocity.y); } } } Here is the ground check script: public class GroundCheck : MonoBehaviour { private PlayerMovement player; // Use this for initialization void Start () { player = gameObject.GetComponentInParent<PlayerMovement> (); } void OnTriggerEnter2D (Collider2D col) { player.grounded = true; Debug.Log ("isGrounded"); } void OnTriggerStay2D (Collider2D col) { player.grounded = true; } void OnTriggerExit2D (Collider2D col) { player.grounded = false; } } Any help will be appreciated
  17. http://www.robolink.com/codrone/ That is one of the few I've found, but seems to have serious quality issues, such as engines burning after 4 hours of flight time and erratic drift. I'm looking to program a tethered quadcopter to carry a rubber ducky in a circle for bow target practice. But I'm sure people will have a million uses for these things.
  18. Starting with C++

    Recently I have gotten back into programming, and though I have learned a decent bit of Java in the past, I decided to give C++ a try. I've found basic tutorials and such online from people such as Thenewboston, but many of them are fairly out of date it seems, or extremely uninteresting. I was curious, where do many others learn these languages when not in school for it? Any suggestions would be much appreciated! (If its a specific youtube video, a link would be great too!)
  19. C++ code writing in visual studio

    So I was just starting with writing codes in visual studio and it turns out that I couldn't. I know c++ and c and have done some basic programming in both of these languages.(By basic I mean like checking a palindrome, linked lists and queues and all that but I really don't know about the new standards and now that I am writing in visual studio nothing seems to work. For example (I will be talking about c++ from now on) I used to write code without that using namespace std which I see on many sites nowadays. I didn't write code for like 2 years after learning the basics of the language. Also, the cout statement to print the output doesn't work and gives an error. I researched about it and I think I have learnt the older version of the language and these are new things in it. So if there anyone who can help me out with this and tell me where can I start learning things and clear the above doubts. Thanks in advance
  20. So I'm thinking of developing an app for a certain application but I'm stuck on a certain principle and online I see a lot of conflicting information. So I was hopeing there are some people here who can give some advice about the rules which apply here (Worldwide). So I want to have an app where people can agree on certain things and these things are stored in the form of contracts (I try to keep it a bit vague here because I don't want anyone else making it ). These contracts can be used later to show certain things are agreed upon, but I don't want to store the information about it in a way that I as a database owner knows between who the contract is or what is is about. This is purely ment as a service. So I was thinking about having some kind of signing of the contracts and here I have my first snag. What kind of digital signage is aproved by courts worldwide? I was thinking about using fingerprints from both parties because these are almost unique and can be validated. Also most mobile phones nowadays have fingerprint sensor so you can use it easly. The signing should be as easy as possible and preferbly don't use any kind of password. So my idea was the person writes down his or her name and gives a fingerprint to sign that the person agrees with the term stated in the contract. So would a court see this as a valid contract between two parties? Or could this be rejected in court? Now because I don't want to store the date in a way I can access it my self I was thinking of using a reversible crypto which encrypts both fingerprint data and the names of the parties 2 times. It uses the name of one of the parties for the first encryption and for the second encryption it uses the other name. So only if you know one of the names of the parties should you be able to get the information back. This is due to the fact that maybe when you are in court one of the parties doesn't want to cooperate so only one fo the parties should be able to present all data from the contract with just his or her information. When such situation occurs one of the parties can "unlock" the contract to show the contents by providing the name he or she used to sign the document. And by providing the fingerprint he or she proves that he or she is one of the parties. The other party can then provide the fingerprint to show he or she is the other party. If he or she doesn't want to give a fingerprint for validation this could be considered as pleading guilty right? and here is my next question would a system like this uphold in court? Even if one of the parties refuses to provide the fingerprint information to validate it? If any of you has information about this I would be very gratefull. I'm not looking for just the situation in america or europe. I prefer to have a system which would be accepted worldwide. I'm also open to sugestions about other ways of doing the same thing.
  21. Netbeans

    Hey My friend is starting to code and I was wondering if netbeans is a good IDE for beginners
  22. public class PlayerMovement : MonoBehaviour { public float speed = 900f; public Rigidbody2D Rgb; // Use this for initialization void Start () { Rgb = GetComponent<Rigidbody2D> (); } // Update is called once per frame void Update () { float Haxis = Input.GetAxis ("Horizontal") * speed * Time.deltaTime; Vector2 Move = new Vector2 (Haxis, 0); Rgb.velocity = (Move * speed); } } Okay so I've got the movement of my character sorted but despite everything i try i can't seem to make my character jump, any help will be appreciated .
  23. I do a fair bit of virtualization, a lot less gaming than I used to, more and more scraping, and voip -- sometimes all at the same time -- I know... yolo. I had 16 GB of RAM, but was starting to feel it drag. It isn't dragging anymore, but now I want to squeeze every last bit of performance out of this system. Where do I start? 3rd party software? Power profiles? Advanced system settings? Is there a knob somewhere I can crank up to the max? In VirtualBox I literally increase memory allocated by using a slider. What about my in native system, Windows 10? Other key specs i7-7700HQ @ 2.8 GHz 250 GB SSD to boot 1 TB HD Storage GTX 1050 ti Something else cool that I can't think of here Oh, by the way, I'm on a 32-bit operating system. JK, its 64. All suggestions are super welcome, eh!
  24. Hi! So recentely I was going through some old boxes and found my old laptop. To my surprise, it was still working but the OS was broken to the point I couldn't even connect to the internet. I installed Windows 10 just to see what happens, it was too much for it, as it has 1GB of RAM and has an intel T2130 CPU, 2 cores @ 1.86 GHz. I decided to go for Linux, as I've heard there are distros designed to be lightweight to run smoothly on old PC's. I chose Lubuntu, downloaded it and installed. The problem is, I have never used Linux. I thought installing my standard software would be easy, but installing additional libraries to Code::Blocks... Oh man. On my main rig with Windows, installing SMFL library was simple, I had to download it and link it in Code::Blocks. But I struggle with it on Linux. It would be easier if I had a 64-bit version, because there is an already working SFML pack for that, but because of my CPU I can only use 32 bit OS, and the only way to get SMFL for 32 bit Linux is to build it yourself with Cmake, which I tried to do but my code still won't compile after linking my project to freshly built SFML. I would really appreciate some help with that, it's my first adventure with Linux and I'm not entirely sure what to do.
  25. Hello guys! Currently I'm in the process of solving a c++ programming exercise for uni but can't really find my mistake. The program is supposed to encrypt a text by combining it with a key via the "^" operator. the encrypted string should then appear on the console. However my main function does not execute or take the encrypted variable from the encrypt function to display it. I'm very new to c++ so please be easy with me XD. Thanks for all thhe help! Anyway here's my code so far: #include <iostream> #include <string> using namespace std; string encrypt(string text, string key) { string result; string part; int k; for (int i = 1; i == text.length(); i++) { part = text.at(i) ^ key.at(k); result = result + part; if (k == key.length()) k = 1; else { k++; } } return result; } /* Hier beginnt das Hauptprogramm */ int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { string text = "Dies ist irgendein Text."; string key = "irgendein Passwort"; string crypt = encrypt(text, key); cout << "So lautet der verschluesselte Text: " << crypt << endl; return 0; }
