  1. Hey, I recently resurrected my laptop from the dead with a motherboard replacement. I decided instead of installing Windows, I would try to give PopOS a proper run as a daily OS. I've been using Linux for several years as part of my web dev job so I'm certainly no noob in terms of Linux or PopOS. Everything is working perfectly fine except sound. For some reason no app or even the system will output to the internal speakers. The headphone jack works fine. I've been Googling for hours and tried many different things but no joy. I've installed the PulseAudio Volume Control app as suggested online. In the Output tab the Speakers show as unavailable. If I select them and then use the volume up and down it does output a little boop tone to indicate volume change. So, the speakers are definitely working. Using inxi -A command I can see that it is loading and using the snd_hda_intel driver. The actual audio chipset / model is Conexant CX20751/2. I've tried setting the model to generic, auto and ideapad within the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file but still nothing. The system always defaults to outputting to the headphone jack even though there's nothing connected to it. I'm really hoping there's something I can do to get the speakers working. It's a real pain and annoyance to not have any audio. I've attached screenshots showing the output of the above-mentioned apps and commands. Reading online apparently, it's to do with a change in Ubuntu where they switched from Pulseaudio to Pipewire? The laptop is a Lenovo IdeaPad 510 15ISK-80SR. It's fresh install of PopOS and fully up to date. Any ideas? I'm at a loss. Thanks Thomas
  2. the utility keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. I am also using pulse audio (pavucontol) to control my audio sources. I am baffled on what this issue is. it was working before and not working now for some reason. i need this software to run my streams. I attached the logs for quicker support pop-support_1700345925.tar.xz goxlr-daemon.log goxlr-daemon.log.1
  3. pop@pop-os:~$ cat /etc/selinux/config #This file controls the state of SELinux on the system. #SELINUX= can take one of these three values: # enforcing - SELinux security policy is enforced. # permissive - SELinux prints warnings instead of enforcing. # disabled - No SELinux policy is loaded. SELINUX=enforcing #SELINUXTYPE= can take one of these two values: # targeted - Targeted processes are protected, # mls - Multi Level Security protection. SELINUXTYPE=targeted pop@pop-os:~$ getenforce Disabled pop@pop-os:~$ setenforce 1 setenforce: SELinux is disabled pop@pop-os:~$ setenforce 0 setenforce: SELinux is disabled pop@pop-os:~$ this is what i got so far and i am stuck. and i kind of altered the config file a bit to see if i could get it to work and seems to be missing some stuff. can someone help me
  4. Hey, I have a issue with the bootloader. I had an issue with pop, so I did a clean install, hoping to fix the issue. But after doing a clean install, my PC would not boot. Apoun further analysis, someone found out that the bootloader partition was missing. So we used Gparted in the installer to add in the bootloader partition. But after trying to install, the entire installer crashed. Not only have I lost all my data, I've now lost my PC too. Do any of you perhaps know why the installer didn't create a fresh partition for the bootloader? Is there a way to fix this this issue? Thanks
  5. Hi, I have a set of Steelserise Siberia elite prism headphones, and in POP!_OS, and Manjaro they are really quiet. On windows it sounds fine. I tried looking for Linux drivers and such, but I could not seem to find them. When I push the volume up to 150% the bass distorts and starts to sound really bad. How can I make them louder without distorting and make them normal?
  6. I have been trying to install POP on my XPS15 2019 (7590). Initially i ran into some problems booting my USB. Was getting the bellow message. Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\mmx64.efi - Not Found Failed to load image \EFI\BOOT\mmx64.efi: Not Found Failed to start MokManager: Not Fond Something has gone seriously wrong: import_mok_state() failed I worked around it by editing the Iso image in the \EFI\BOOT path where the mmx64.efi was missing. I resolved this by making a copy of the grubx64.efi file and and naming it mmx64.efi. So i now have three files. This allowed my USB to properly boot and begin the installation. I did a clean install and towards the end i got the error code 23. The exact output is detailed bellow. INFO: Install error: error creating recovery partition: command failed with exit status: exit code: 23 To my understanding error code 23 has something to do with hardware issues either on the USB flash or the target SSD (please correct me if im wrong, im new at Linux) I flashed multiple USB's using Rufus all of which ran in to the same problem. I tried using etcher which did not even boot. I have SATA set to AHCI and secure-boot disabled. So i am somewhat at a loss what i can do next. Also free free to bash me if i'm using wrong terminology need to start learning somewhere.
  7. Hi, I got a Lenovo laptop last year for college and have been using windows 10 on it, but recently I have been interested in Linux, specifically Pop OS!. At first I was going to download Ubuntu, I got it ready on the usb stick and as soon as I started installing I noticed that my touchpad wasn't working, I plugged in a external USB mouse thinking it might just be a missing driver etc, but when I loaded in it wasn't even listed in xinput/ xinput list. At this stage I was quite busy and didn't have time to look into it. Few months later I recently started up my laptop and decided to put Pop OS thinking that it might go, but it didn't. When it comes to Linux I am still very new so any tips will be grateful I went through the installation with a external Mouse, then started troubleshooting. Did: xinput : Nothing related to touchpad came up. Did: cat /proc/bus/input/devices : Nothing related to touchpad appeared, however a device called i2c-ELAN0001:00/input/input4 what their with the name "Elan Touchscreen" this seemed strange as this isn't a touchscreen laptop. Did some searching and discovered that doing ctrl+alt+F3 enters a Virtual Terminal, I logged in and touched my touchpad: first touch: elants_i2c i2c-ELAN0001:00: unknown packet 0e 00 04 03 When I let go: elants_i2c i2c-ELAN0001:00: unknown packet 0e 00 04 01 Meaning when I touch it, its 03 and when I let go it is 01. Also that touchscreen ELAN0001 = Touchpad touch (ELAN0001). So I guess this tells us that it can detect it, put something is missing e.g. Driver is just bad optimisation with the kernel. The attempted fixes I have done: Tried installing/updated Elan Drivers as well as various other drivers that could of helped I looked into the kernel itself assuming that at this point the kernel has no idea what to do with these drivers and the touchpad "touchscreen". -Tried to "build my own" kernel following some guides, got kinda far but certain steps weren't working and since I don't have a vast knowledge I don't know what to do. I have also noticed that this seems to happen to mostly Lenovo products, so something with the way Lenovo makes their Touchpad Drivers doesn't work with the Linux kernel? I don't have much knowledge with Linux and would really appreciate some help with this, if you need anymore information just ask. Sorry if I have said something dumb etc.
  8. TLDR - I used to own a R9 290 (Sea Islands, GCN2) and couldnt get the Os to boot using the AMDGPU driver so that I could use Vulkan & DXVK, due to the reason the Kernel I have installed (5.8) and the AMD drivers only currently supporting up to Kernel 5.4. Im now using a R9 280 (Volcanic Islands, GCN1) and thought I`d give this another go and try to install Vulkan and get the AMDGPU driver running instead of Radeon. Ive had mixed results. I have managed to get Vulkan & DVVK installed and working 99% .... The last 1% being some game I cannot run from steam or lutirs that tell me I need DX11 installed of which I thought DXVK was for, so Im confused. vulkaninfo give 3 errors of what I am attributing to the issue with the Amd drivers not supporting Kernel 5.8 ERROR: [Loader Message] Code 0 : /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libvulkan_intel.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32 ERROR: [Loader Message] Code 0 : /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libvulkan_lvp.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32 ERROR: [Loader Message] Code 0 : /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libvulkan_radeon.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32 In the rest of the readout it also advises that its using the GPU id = 0 (llvmpipe (LLVM 11.0.1, 256 bits)) and not my R9 280 and im a little confused about this too. lsmod | grep amdgpu also confirms this with - deviceType = PHYSICAL_DEVICE_TYPE_CPU deviceName = llvmpipe (LLVM 11.0.1, 256 bits) In regards to the AMDGPU driver I have tried ... Blacklisting /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf Add the following line: blacklist radeon. Run sudo update-initramfs -u Editing the grub xhost +si:localuser:root; sudo gedit /etc/default/grub Change the line to the following: Change the line to the following: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.si_support=0 radeon.cik_support=1 amdgpu.si_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1 ( there is lots of conflicting guides on which one to switch on for my card and ive read that its in-between Sea Islands & Southern Islands, but .cik is the one to use?) sudo update-grub + reboot Adding these lines to the /etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu.conf options amdgpu si_support=0 options amdgpu cik_support=1 All of this had always resulted in either a black screen upon boot .. it just will not use AMDGPU I even tried updating the Kernel ( I think ) with the HWE stack, but it made no difference. sudo apt install linux-generic-hwe-20.04-edge So in essence this time I have managed to get DXVK & Vulkan installed, but I still cannot use it properly ( I think from lots of reading ) due to the AMD drivers not supporting the Kernel I have installed. The easy option is to re-installed 20.04 and dont update the Kernel and according to the guides, I should be ok and this will work. However I coming to the conclusion that if Im going to re-install again, maybe I should just bite the bullet and Install Manjaro n go for the more stable setup as I can only envisage these problems returning if I stick with Gnome? Apart from Gnome being modelled off Debian and Manjaro being modelled from Arch .... I really cant find a simple explanation on how they differ under the hood. I know there is no guarantee that I will beable to get AMDGPU working with this card using Manjaro but Im up for the challenge/learning experience, but at the same time, I know more about Pop/Gnome n how it works compared to Manjaro/Arch n that keeps holding me back. I thought I`d run this past u peeps 1st just to see if there is anything I have missed out trying considering Ive actually managed to get Vulkan & DXVK installed this time before I head off on a new journey / head-ache again
  9. I have a 4:3 display (it is an onyx boox max lumi) and Pop os won't natively display anything besides 1080p 16:9 and 720p 16:9 on it from the pop os display settings. I tried following some instructions on how to fix it from command line and it didn't work. So I messed around with the NVIDIA display settings and was able to get a 4:3 Resolution to work 1440x1080. The thing is it won't save and show up in Pop os settings. Also, that is way lower than the actual resolution of my monitor which is 2200x1650. Anyone know how to fix my issue? Here's a link to what I did to fix the Nvidia settings (which I completely don't understand.) In total, these are the issues I'm still having. I can't fix Mirror mode (I want it to be like it is on windows where on the 4:3 display it looks normal and then on the 16:9 display it has black bars on the left and right and the mirrored 4:3 display is in the middle I can't get a Higher Resolution to work for example I tried 1920x1440 and it didn't work, even though I had the ViewportOut set as "1920x1440+0+240" I can't Change DPI I don't know how to get it to save the monitor settings I set in NVIDA (it resets upon reboot) The new Display settings don't show up in the Pop OS! settings menu (so, it doesn't give me a correct resolution to choose from and I can't change my DPI
  10. So I decided to try pop os again because I was bored. Whatever, I ended up finding more things that just didn't work correctly so I went and booted back to windows but now XTU's values are messed up and Aida64 reports the CPU is always at 0.91GHz.... (It's not) I've tried installing the Intel ME and DPTF drivers but that didn't help. XTU and Aida used to report correct values before installing PopOS... I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling XTU but that also did nothing. Here is a screenshot of XTU's weird values. My main issue is it maxed out the slider for multiplier at 51x despite being at 53x normally.... If I try and apply my saved profile it fails, saying there are incorrect values.
  11. I just installed PopOS and i opened the PopShop and downloaded a gmail client. 12. help pls. I just installed PopOS on a Dell Optiplex 755. And I just downloaded a Gmail client from the shop and was looking at another one. Then the Omnisiah said "fuck you" and this happened.
  13. Following Andy's instructions I managed to get until 6:17. Apparently in the BIOS PopOS should be a selectable boot option, not for me tho. PC is a Dell Optiplex 755. Runs a Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 that was meant to run Windows XP hence why I'm trying to install Linux. Currently I still have the boot usb plugged in and whenever I turn on the PC it keeps going into the Live Environment to install PopOS. The thing is, after the first install, I had a third option asking if I wanted to "refresh my install", which shows that PopOS is installed but I can't boot into it when I remove the boot USB. Pls help
  14. Hi all, I recently came into possession of an old junk laptop (Gateway NV52L15u) that my parents were going to throw out. I figured, rather than creating more e-waste, I would try to give the laptop a new lease on life, while at the same time finally taking a dive into Linux (plus, if I failed in doing so, I could at the very least scavenge the hard drive as a new game library drive). The laptop isn't great - coming into my hands with a lightning fast AMD A8-4500M at 1.9GHz with 4GB of DDR3 memory and a 500GB mechanical hard drive - but I had some extra DDR3 sticks lying around, so I upped the total memory to 6Gb and focused on OS upgrades. I got Windows 10 running but it's pretty slow, and I don't really want to throw any money into this machine at the moment for a solid state drive, so I thought using a 128Gb Samsung USB 3.1 flash drive, coupled with this laptop's single USB 3.0 port, would at least allow me an easy way to run PopOS (I had seen a lot of videos about PopOS and of course the Linux challenge has me interested in the overall ecosystem). I created a Live Environment (using a 4GB USB thumb drive I had floating around) using my main desktop machine, disabled UEFI on the laptop and reverted back to Legacy BIOS, booted to that Live Environment, and installed PopOS on my 128Gb Samsung drive. All was well and good until I removed the Live Environment drive and tried to boot directly from the Samsung 128Gb drive (herein referred to as my boot drive). The laptop does not detect my boot drive in the USB 3.0 slot, only the USB 2.0 port. At that point, I might as well use the hard drive in the machine as a boot drive, but I don't want to nuke my copy of Windows just yet. When I booted to my Live Environment, it was from the USB 3.0 slot, so I know that the port works and can be booted from. Is there some way to rectify this or something I'm missing? I'm new to the Linux community in almost every way (I have a Raspberry Pi I play around with every once in a while), but willing to get my hands dirty. Any advice? TLDR - See bolded System specs - See underlined Thank you to all!
  15. I'm using a PC in UEFI mode with a drive formatted as GPT with fast boot turned off in the BIOS. The drive is a 1TB drive with 96.95GB unallocated at the end of the disk, after the three Windows 10 partitions (reserved, OS and EFI). Previously I've tried Ubuntu and it had an "install alongside" option in the installer and that worked fine. Is there a trick to installing POP!_OS 21.10 with manual partitioning since it has no install alongside option? I'm trying: (Note: p1, p2 and p3 are the Windows partitions). Should the POP-BOOT partition have a specific flag? The installer completes with and error and the log says errors related to being unable to write the bootloader.
  16. Tried to install it when I clicked erase the disk it said it failed an I should either try again or boot from a different usb so I selected to boot from a different usb an it dismounted pop os and now I want to install it on a different one but I cannot get on my windows or even to boot from something.
  17. So this is my first time installing ANY kind of Linux. ANY OS tbh. I Went with pop OS because it seems fairly on board with the beginner friendly and good looks train. But I don't want to install it on my 1 tb drive. I want to install it on a USB of 16 GB storage. Right now I have Rufus and the ISO file from system76 website. How do i go about doing this. I Wanna strictly not touch any component of my internal hard drive while doing this because my Windows is already pretty wreaked. Can someone walk me through..?
  18. 19. I have upgraded my Pop distro from 21.04 to 21.10. I hva been using pipewire as my audio server thing instead of pulseaudio which is default, i tried reinstalling but when i come to the pactl info it just says "Connection failure: Connection refused pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused" I have no idea what to do at all, please help me.
  20. I flashed my drive, disabled secure boot and booted from the flash drive and it's been stuck like this for more than 10 minutes now.
  21. Hi, am having trouble setting up dual boot between Windows 10 and Pop OS. I installed Pop alongside my existing windows install. I can swap between each OS fine if i change the boot order in BIOS, so both OS's are installed fine, but when in the boot manager Pop OS is not listed. I have each OS installed on different drives (so not partitioned on a single drive). What i think i need from researching is to install GRUB as a boot manager as i think the windows boot manager only detects windows, is that right??? but honestly im not sure and cant seem to find a GRUB download or a clearer explanation of what exactly i need to do. Anyone able to help? Thanks in advance.
  22. I recently got Pop OS! Up and running and it was easy to get most of my programs installed, now I just have a few finicky ones left. 1. I don't really understand how to install .tar.gz files. 2. I installed Audacium because Audacity has added in telemetry and I went and found how to add the github repo as well as how to install it from command line, the problem is that the ui is really tiny and I can't see it very well. 3. When it comes to Wine will it break when I update my system? I wanted to get Pop OS! 20.04 LTS, but I also wanted the Cosmic desktop environment. So I ended up installing Pop os 21.04, since it gets updates so often, does that mean stuff will break after an update. 4. Does anyone know the turn around time for how long it typically takes for people to figure out how to get the Microsoft office suite to work in wine. LibreOffice is good for everything I do except for it's version of Powerpoint. I still need to be able to use Powerpoint (specifically powerpoint 2019) and when I looked it up Office 2019 isn't working yet
  23. I have the instructions from another forum post I made, but I have no clue what to do even with the instructions spelled out on the arch wiki. (I've only ever used linux from the gui, I don't really know stuff about non windows file systems and boot partitions.) Here are the instructions. “No problem! I dual boot Pop with Windows (I've disabled secure boot), and have them both installed on separate drives. One pitfall to watch out for is to make sure you install Ubuntu in UEFI (vs BIOS) mode (assuming Windows is using UEFI) by selecting the correct entry when you boot your install USB (both entries will boot the live image, but only 1 will install correctly). Also if you have an nvidia gpu, the fan may start going crazy at max speed until you install the proprietary drivers. Also it turns out enabling secure boot for Pop doesn't sound too difficult so I may give this a shot when I have time (could be a while) https://superuser.com/a/1555808 https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface/Secure_Boot#PreLoader https://blog.hansenpartnership.com/linux-foundation-secure-boot-system-released/" Please explain it to me like I'm five.
  24. I was just starting up the system and opened Steam when Gnome locked up, the mouse worked but nothing else including alt+f2 worked. I waited a couple of minutes for the drive activity light to disappear, and I hard rebooted it. After the Systemd boot menu I see a flash of gray from the Gnome login screen right before being dumped here. Booting between the current kernel and the old kernel via the systemd boot menu makes no difference. I haven't tried booting into the recovery partition yet, but I can boot into Windows which rules out hardware failure. After some searching I found this: https://askubuntu.com/questions/646414/welcome-to-emergency-mode-think-it-is-a-fsck-problem After booting into the recovery partition and running fdisk -l I get this: sda appears to be the NTFS formatted Segate drive installed in my system that mounts on boot. (I have checked it in Windows and it is fine) sdb is the drive PopOS is installed on, but I don't know what to do about the "Partition 1 does not start on physical sector boundary" error. If anyone has any information on this I would love to know more. As you can see here, fsck thinks that sdb2 (The partition I believe Pop is installed on, is fine) Running cat /etc/fstab provides this: Am I screwed? How can I figure out what went wrong and (hopefully) fix it? If anyone has any idea what's going on here I could really appreciate the help. If worst comes for worse, would refreshing the OS from the recovery partition fix this issue?
  25. so I have a ryzen 5 3400g that seems to prefer popos or manjaro graphically wise, but then spits the dummy with wifi, mint 20 has graphical issues unless you goto recovery mode then normal boot this happens with kernel 5.4 and 5.11 but has better wifi. im at a loss as to what to do. run windows you say.......... problem is windows 10 goes into an "update install fail" that lasts anywhere from 30 mins to 3hrs, does several reboots to install then remove said update, it was doing this daily. popos wifi cuts in and out every 20 mins to an hour, so gaming is out of the question. manjaro looses signal strength before cutting out, around every 10 mins debian live cd wont even get to a gui screen. mint gives "in picture, in picture, in picture" artefact starting from the menu button (bottom left corner) going across the screen on a diagnal, requires power button reboot, but wifi doesnt cut out. so anyone got any ideas of either another linux distro that might work, or someway of fixing one of the above?
