  1. Hey guys, TL;DR Upgrading from a 280x. Playing on a 1080p144Hz monitor. New AAA titles. How much of an experience hit will I receive with an RX580 compared to Vega 56? Can afford both, just custom Vega cards are taking forever. I've currently got an XFX R9 280x paired with an R7 1700 @ 3.85GHz and I'm gaming on a 1080p 144hz freesync monitor. This has been serving me well for occasional comp CS:GO and some Just Cause 3, however I've refrained from playing some more intensive games like Doom, Fallout, Tomb Raider and Witcher, so I'd like an upgrade to my graphics card, and preferably an upgrade that will let me take advantage of my freesync monitor. Was going to originally go for an RX480/580, however I bought into the vega hype and from what I can tell it's not as bad as its made out to be, but the strix vega 56 is taking literally forever (meant to be out over 2 months ago, still no time estimate, and I suspect the 56 will take even longer than the 64 to come out). I've looked at plenty of benchmarks and there seems to be a fair gap, but exactly how noticeable and how much degradation to the gaming experience is there? For example: ROTTR - Vega 56 112FPS RX480 80FPS. Doom - Vega 56 181FPS RX580 138FPS. Witcher 3 - Vega 56 90FPS RX580 63FPS. How much of a hit to that gaming experience will that lower framerate induce, especially considering that I have a freesync monitor? Will lowering quality settings make much difference to the framerate, and how much does the image quality get reduced? This PC is mainly a workstation as I have no time to play games during the school term, I only really game during the holidays. I've spent ~A$3500 on the PC so far, making decisions such as 32GB of RAM and four SSDs. I can comfortably afford SLI Titan XPs, however I'm pretty careful with how I spend my money and make careful purchases. Another consideration is that at some point I might want to get into next gen VR when it's more reasonable. Will the minimum specs be increased (eg to a 1070 level instead of a 1060)?
  2. It would appear that AMD fully realizes that GPU Mining is a profitable business for selling their products and has added a GPU Workload toggle as well as support for up to 12 Polaris or Vega based RX cards on Windows 10 in compute tasks in the newest ReLive Edition 17.10.2. https://www.anandtech.com/show/11959/amd-releases-radeon-software-crimson-relive-edition-17102 One thing to note is that there appear to still be bugs in this as they list two major bugs dealing with the Compute and Multi-GPU setups. First is that the system may hang up when switching to Compute mode while Crossfire is enabled and the second (which would be more major for miners) is that after an extended period of 12x GPU compute workload use, the system may hang. So who has their twelve RX 480s and/or 580s stashed away just waiting for official support? AMD Release Notes: http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/Radeon-Software-Crimson-ReLive-Edition-17.10.2-Release-Notes.aspx
  3. Finally, AMD has announced an addition to their other 2 Polaris based embedded lineup, the E9170. TLDR; E9550 = RX 580, E9260 = A little less than a RX 560, E9170 = RX 550. Of course, these are much lower clocked than desktop variants, but also have ridiculously low power usage. The brand new E9170 is listed as having power consumption of "Up to 50 watts", although most variants use 35 watts. The E9170 will come in all 3 major form factors: MXM (Common in laptops), MCM (IC chip), and PCIe (Common in desktops). The target market for these embedded systems are things like Casino games, Medical displays, Multi-display advertising, Etc. This new E9170 will be produced for the next 7 years, until 2024, which means this is a huge opportunity for AMD to gain long-term, recurring revenue. Videos: Opinion: This is where Polaris really shines, and IMHO this is more important than the desktop Polaris variants. Polaris is ridiculously efficient, but the best chips have always been reserved for embedded, with the more power hungry versions going to desktop. I remember seeing this in a jayzTwoCents video pointing this out, I will add it once I find it. EDIT: I added the jayzTwoCents vid (in the video spoiler) outlining how power consumption on better binned Polaris is simply stunning. 4. RX 570 vs RX 480?

So I want to upgrade my GTX 750ti to an AMD gpu. I found out that the sapphire edition of both of these cards have similar price, and I was wondering which one to get? or I should just wait for Vega to come?
  5. I just sold my current graphics card and I was searching online for another graphics card. The issue is that it looks like most rx 570's and rx 580's are sold out or are way above msrp. I was looking into getting a polaris card but at this point, I am seriously considering just getting a gtx 1060.
  6. The Maxwell microarchitecture, the successor to Kepler microarchitecture, for the first time features an integrated ARM CPU of its own.[6] This makes Maxwell GPUs more independent from the main CPU, according to Nvidia's CEO Jen-Hsun Huang.[7] Nvidia expected three major things from the Maxwell architecture: improved graphics capabilities, simplified programming, and better energy-efficiency compared to the GeForce 700 Series and GeForce 600 Series [8] Okay if Nvidia could slap in a ARM CPU in their GPUs why could AMD not do the same with Polaris, or even use a x86/64 one?
  7. AMD announces a new Radeon Pro Duo based on two Polaris 10 GPUs... and it's not watercooled! full link: https://videocardz.com/press-release/amd-announces-new-radeon-pro-duo-with-two-polaris-10-gpus AMD's statement: But let's get to the specs first: Now for the price & launch date: At least it's cheaper than its precedessor which was around 1500$ I believe? Personal opinion: So AMD decided to release a new Radeon Pro Duo card, this time featuring two Polaris 10 chips instead of two Fiji XT ones... I don't fully understand that because I expected the next Pro Duo to be Vega-based... I mean, two Polaris 10 chips are just slower than two Fiji XT chips... EDIT: http://www.amd.com/en-us/products/graphics/workstation/radeon-pro/duo?webSyncID=adc2ec90-8d18-3337-e2bb-3140320e809b&sessionGUID=6ac40128-d592-65a2-d723-923b68ae5049# http://pro.radeon.com/en-us/radeon-pro-duo-the-worlds-first-dual-gpu-graphics-card-designed-for-professionals/ AMD's selling points: More pictures (spoiler):
  8. Sauce: https://videocardz.com/68450/amd-radeon-rx-500-series-official-specifications-and-performance-leaked UPDATED: The RX500 was launched today by AMD. It's an AIB-only launch, meaning no stock cooler or reference design by AMD (like the 390(X) launch). The reference pictures found on AMD's slides were there just to have something to show on the slides (although I kinda do want that design for a card. It looks very nice). The reviews can be found all over the place, but here are a few: Linus's video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWqF5fDAZqA Gamer's Nexus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIpOx8YUXuU Paul's Hardware: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omvmPBSOLtg&feature=youtu.be Some written reviews: http://www.anandtech.com/show/11278/amd-radeon-rx-580-rx-570-review https://www.hardocp.com/article/2017/04/18/amd_radeon_rx_580_powercolor_red_devil_golden_sample https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Sapphire/RX_580_Nitro_Plus/ https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics-Cards/Radeon-RX-580-8GB-Review-Polaris-Populism Original article: We have the RX580: Then the RX570: The comes the RX560, the full fat P11 chip: And finally the RX550, an 8CU/512SP card designed as the entry level card to replace people's iGPUs: The entire lineup, with what it seems includes some way better reference designs and no more blower coolers: So yeah. If you have the previous RX4xx lineup there's pretty much no reason to upgrade. But if you have an older card this is a great time for a RX series card. AMD made good use of the year it had refining their 14 nm process which should result in better overclocks all around the lineup. No pricing yet, but expect them to be pretty much the same as the previous cards (after the launch day price gauging of course). edit fixed title typo
  9. In addition to the new stack of Polaris Refresh cards that AMD has just released, they are also going to push out yet another Polaris Card for lower power consumption and targeting the mobile notebook market. This new card is going to sit just below the RX 550 (thus it will be the RX 540). From the TechReport (http://techreport.com/news/31764/radeon-rx-540-offers-a-tiny-slice-of-polaris-power-to-notebooks): It is good to note that this is being targeted at lower power and lower end notebook market to provide something better than the onboard graphics on most mobile CPUs so I would expect this to be for something like a notebook used to stream Youtube or maybe play some less graphics intensive games on the go... Definitely not going to be competing with the $3000 beasts of laptops with dual 1080 SLI. Would anyone actually be interested in one of these in a notebook or a low power PC? 10. NVidia vs AMD Platform

With the new AMD Polaris refresh cards dropping a few hours ago, the midrange debate between NVidia and AMD has sparked again. The numbers and FPS gains are out there, so today I wanted to compare the PLATFORMS of the GTX 1000 series and the RX 500 series. Before these new AMD cards dropped I was going to definitely buy a 1060 6GB in the next few weeks, but now I would like to here some people's opinions about the cards (not raw performance and numbers, but about the platform, software, etc). One thing that I read about when I was looking for a card TWO generations ago was that AMD's OpenGL driver implementation was horrible. People reported that in the particular OpenGL title I was looking to play, cards like the 380 and 290 had unplayable frame rates at the lowest setting, while cards like the 750ti and 950 could easily play the game. Has this changed at all? (OpenGL game is X-Plane 10 {now 11} by the way)
  11. https://videocardz.com/67693/amd-radeon-rx-570-and-580-exposed I didn't see anyone posting this article yet.... It seems some new photos have been leaked with actual pictures of the pcbs. It looks like the RX580 has an updated pcb design with an 8 pin connector and the RX570 looks very similar to the RX480. edit**** Just came across this article as well: http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/amd-radeon-rx-500-series-engineering-samples-spotted/ It seems to indicate a higher clock for the 580 with the same 2304 stream processors. 12. So I decided to pick up skyrim se and tried it on my rx480 build and had terrible performance at 1080p usually under 40fps. it turns out that disabling the Vsync in the games ini file fixed it and gives me a stable 60fps. I had to obviously cap the fps and i did so using amds radeon software. Now I'm getting notable screen tearing which is really killing me inside so here's my decision. 1. Just deal with it and enjoy great performance. 2. Enable the ingame vsync and cry at terrible performance. 3. Buy a freesync monitor? What do you guys think? Either that or I'm having a different issue and can't find a fix.
  13. is RX 480 good in 2017?

Should Buy the RX 480 now or is the new RX 500 series getting launched soon and i should wait for that?
  14. I thought I'd post this spreadsheet of what I think this year's graphics card line-up is going. Yes, I know I've included last year's cards in this chart. And yes, I know this is pure speculation and is just me getting my hopes up. But hey, I made it and I might as well show someone.
  15. I have an old desktop with a 4gb ram with core i3 3220 @3.3ghz on board. I was planning to upgrade this pc. I am thinking to add an i7 3770k and rx480 8gb or an evga gtx 1070 sc only. this pc only for transition only, I am planning build an working station after 1 and a half year, may I have some suggestion? thanks

Even the "basic" Macbook Pro's base offering is even more expensive than last year's base Macbook Pro. Granted, it contains double the storage, but even then the "basic" Macbook Pro costs the same as last year. That's not even mentioning the "fancy" Macbook Pros, which cost a few hundred dollars more than last years. Still though, there's some cool new features in the new 2016 models that should be mentioned. We're getting a new thinner and lighter Macbook Pro this year, that also has some other changes. Among this is a bigger trackpad, a butterfly switch keyboard (basically the same as the one on the Macbook), and Thunderbolt 3 ports on the side. The only I/O on this year's Macbook Pros is Thunderbolt 3 and a headphone jack. This offers a huge amount of bandwidth and the ports can be used for charging, too, but this also means a lot of your peripherals will need adapters now. We also get upgraded internals, in the form of Skylake, Polaris GPUs on the 15" Macbook Pro, and a new, faster SSD. As well, it has been said that the new displays have "variable refresh rate," so it'll be interesting if the new Macs come with freesync. OLED Touch Bar The new Macs also have the largely rumored OLED Touch Bar on the top above the keyboard. The bar is only present on the more expensive "fancy" Macbook Pros, and replaces the function keys. The program running can change what's displayed on the bar which gives many different things that can be done with it. This is pretty cool IMO, and how much it can really be used in the real world will remain to be seen. Touch ID Also rumored and true, the new Macs have a Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the side of the OLED Bar. It's a physical button that also functions as the power button. This seems cool, as signing in will be a lot simpler. That's pretty much everything we know about the new Macs. We didn't get a new Macbook Air or Macbook; the "basic" Macbook Pro is supposed to replace the Air (though I'm not sure how that'll work if it's around 50% more expensive). They seem pretty cool and have a lot of cool features though the price is pretty expensive. What are your thoughts? I personally find them as really cool, neat laptops, but the price really ruins it. Note: I have a feeling someone's gonna come and be like "Repost!" No, it's not a repost. There are no posts about the new Macbook Pros in this sub-forum, only ones about the live event, which is different.
  17. RX 480 4gb or RX 470 8gb

Im confused between the RX 480 4gb and the RX 470 8gb. Both are the same price in my country(MSI Gaming X versions).
  18. I've been lurking a lot and it seems that the most knowledgeable users keep saying that Pascal is quite a mess on laptop and heats like an oven, so if you want to really take advantage of it you must buy more expensive and better cooled laptops than the old 9xxM series. I need a new laptop FOR GAMING USE and I've been patiently waiting for the GTX 1050 or the Polaris equivalent (my budget is around 1000€ incl. VAT, so ~800$, take the dell 7559 as reference), but at this point I'm asking you: Is it really worth it? Are there any rumors indicating that 1050 will also be so hot that they'll be more expensive than 960m ones? Anything from AMD? What do you think? Thank you
  19. RX 480 vs GTX 1060/1070/1080

Hi (I'm sorry if a thread like this exists). I'm looking at purchasing a new GPU for my computer to upgrade my 960 (not soon-ish, within the next 6 months-year). I saw the RX 480 as a really good budget GPU, but comparing it to something like a 1060/1070/1080, I'm not sure, or even against a 980Ti. If you could tell me which is better, or by how much, that would be amazing. Thanks, Alpha.
  20. http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/samsung-preps-samsung-960-evo-m2-with-polaris-architecture.html 48-Layer TLC NAND Samsung is to release the new model in capacities of 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB. Performance wise you'll get a smile on your face, it is tagged with sequential transfer rates of up to 3000 MB/s reads, with up to 1150 MB/s writes; 360,000 IOPS 4K random-read, and up to 280,000 IOPS 4K random-write. The 960 EVO will become available likely next month in M.2 (NGFF-2280) and PCIe add-on card form-factors. These units obviously will require PCI-Express 3.0 with x4 lanes as the SSDs are using the the NVMe protocol. Hurray for cheaper high-capacity M.2 drives! And that performance is still nothing to sneeze at.
  21. Now I like AMD, GPU and CPU wise. I think they're very good at price for performance, I also think that Nvidia and Intel are better at doing things...well better. I've always felt that one of the worse things of AMD's products and probably from an overall marketing standpoint is their naming. It sounds stupid but as an average consumer you're going to be more attracted to purchasing a CPU based of Intel's "Skylake" processors than AMD's steamroller. (Although tbf the average consumer wont care so much about architectures and things so for simplicity's sake we'll do it this way) i7, i5, i3, pentium.etc also sounds a lot more simple and "technological" than the A series, Athlon and FX, and their graphics cards...wtf is Radeon, Nvidia's GeForce sounds amazing compared to Radeon. Anywho AMD's marketing seems to be getting better, I mean who wouldn't love the name Polaris vs Pascal, or Zen vs i series. Do you believe AMD is taking a stand and bumping up their marketing because they have more faith in their products, just bought a new a commercial branding team, or just want to sound cooler to sling the next load of disasters they fling at us after FX and RX480. Just a fun topic about the commercial side of things over specs and stuff. I'm definitely not super qualified to analyse this, just thought it would be fun to chat about
  22. Hey all, longtime lurker and need some help selecting an upgrade to my aging GTX 660. I have always wanted a GEFORCE side stickered card. I have been looking at the 1070 FE and 1060 FE but I also like the look of the RX480 Strix. I just cant decide which card to get as I plan on getting either a Vega or 1080TI (or maybe 1180 TI) when it comes out. Would you say I wait and still use my 660 for now, pick up maybe a 780/980 on the used marked for like 180/250 or get a bridge card? Thanks for your help, I keep stumping myself.
  23. In order to edit and render videos in 30FPS - 4K video, is it possible to build a rig at 570 $ excluding windows. That will get the Job done. Here is something I came up with just picking out items. http://pcpartpicker.com/list/d4XsXH The list goes very high up to $1457.84 Can you build a PC that can handle 4k Video edits at that price? And if not, what kind of PC build is reasonable for editing and rendering videos in 4 K. Thanks
  24. So I'm looking to buy a new GPU in the near future and I really hoped for something from the Team Red side of things (Vulcan ho!) that would at least match a 1070 or even better. One can dream right? But as I was googling for an 'RX 490' all I could find were rumours and/or articles that stated that the RX480 was the best we were going to get for now (mostly just skipped through the search results to be fair), and that the 480 would be the top of the line as far as AMD will go with Polaris. So now my question is - Really? Is this all we get in terms of Polaris GPUs? Will we have to wait for the Vega architecture for something to compete with the likes of 1070s and 1080s (or by then 1170s, 1180s). Now I do know that there still are the Fury cards that hold up rather well-ish compared to Pascal, but I've been a bit weary of those since I heard a lot of people complain about coil whine across all three models. What do you guys think or even better, know? Is this all we're getting on the desktop side from Polaris?
  25. Dual RX 480 or GTX 1080

So I'm building my first pc and I'm wondering if I should get 2 RX 480s in crossfire or just get a single gtx 1080, I am also planning on buying a sycned monitor( g-sync or free-sync depending on the GPU) so which one should I get
