I cant say, I have ever posted my own topic to a forum before. So I hope I am putting this post in the right place. I recently purchased a ROG Strix GL702VM Gaming Laptop in the 7700HQ series with the 1060GTX with 6GB of GDDR5. I upgraded the M.2 SSD to a Samsung PRO 960 M.2 NVMe 512GB and installed 32GB of HyperX Ram to give it more juice to work with. While I was upgrading these things I thought why not get a new monitor while I'm at it. I now have a shiny new ASUS PG27AQ UHD 4K IPS monitor. (Thanks to the video review Linus did on it) I wanted to utilise the Mini-DisplayPort on the laptop to drive the 4K monitor as it (and the Thunderbolt 3 port I think) is the only way to enable the G-Sync on the monitor. However when I connect the Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort 2m cable in, the only options I get for resolution are 1024x768 or 800x600 (Note: the cable was aftermarket and only $8 so it wouldn't surprise me if that is the issue but I want to make sure its nothing else before investing in yet another cable). I can get the monitor to work properly with a HDMI with resolution 1920x1080 at 60Hz or 3840x2160 at 24Hz. (And no G-Sync support) I would much prefer to utilise what I paid the $$$ for in the monitor but I cant seem to work out what the problem is. I have, - made sure the drivers are up to date - checked if it was a setting on the monitor - looked up to see if anyone else was having this issue with this monitor but all I keep getting are reviews on how good the monitor is rather than anyone having any display issues. - looked up the specifications on the Mini-DisplayPort on the laptop is capable of and it seems to support it, especially considering the laptop explains to you that G-Sync will only work via that port (and or Thunderbolt 3, again I think) - looked up on the GTX 1060 6GB to see if it is capable of driving such a monitor. The Nvidia website seems to only list up to the Titan X to support 4K but I do believe that list is out of date considering there is no way a GTX 1080 wouldn't support 4K, and as I mentioned earlier it will push the resolution via HDMI just at a terrible refresh rate. (And no G-Sync) - I also got my old portable optical drive out to spin up the CD the monitor came with, just in case there was some specific driver I needed to install on the computer but all it had on it was the Manual (which was zero help with this issue) and a outdated Nvidia Driver. - As a last ditch attempt to work it out, I factory reset the laptop as I didn't have much on it yet anyway and that still didn't fix the issue. I only have a few ideas on what it could be but I just don't know enough to make a proper decision. Coud it be, - the $8 cable is just terrible and I should get a better one? - the cable too long? It's 2m - 'Active DisplayPort Cable' issue? I remember way back when I used DisplayPort last time I had issues with this, could this be a similar issue? - I should be using a Thunderbolt 3 to DisplayPort cable instead Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. I don't want $1350 worth of monitor to be wasted on HDMI 1980x1080 60Hz with no G-Sync.

Hi, a new auction popped up at a really good price for the Asus pg27aq and I only have a couple of hours to go before it ends. I read many reviews saying how awesome the monitor is, but I want to you if anyone has used the 1440p resulting, and if it looks good or weird. Thanks.

I have a core i7 7700 and gtx 1080ti, and just got a great deal on a used Asus PG27AQ (IPS, gsync, 4k, 60hz) for 400$, much cheaper than the cheapest 1440p IPS with gsync, her in Japan. I know that my GPU is not powerful enough to drive 4k at ultra at 60fps, but am hoping to use it for a few years, before going SLI. Those of you who have a 4k gsync, for non competitive games, do fps in the 50s still give you an immersive experience? Any input on what the 1440p looks like on that monitor? Thanks, David.

Hi, I just received my monitor and was wondering if anyone could share their calibration settings. Mine are: Racing mode, brightness 46, R96 G88 B91 It looks good but I feel it could get better. What are yours? David

Hey! I saw a guide by linus awhile ago about overclocking the refresh rate of a monitor. I have a dusty PG27AQ lying around and I thought I would be quite fun to see if its possible to stretch its refresh rate. However I can't seem to overclock the monitor at all! I've tried programs such as CMU, EVGA XOC, and the method linus used on his video ( ) Specs: GTX1080 PG27AQ 4k, 1,2 DP interface, Does anyone have any tips? Or does overclocking the monitor only work with a titan card? I'm aware of the risks involved, thanks in advance!:)

For a while I've been debating on what 4K monitor to get. I have two 1080TIs on water and wanna push it to the max at 4K. For a while I was deciding on the Asus PG27AQ but looking online recently they've become harder to come by unless I buy one at a ridiculous price or get a used one off Ebay before taking into consideration of the Acer XB271HK which is at a reasonable price.

So I just ordered myself an ASUS ROG Swift pg279q (heavily influenced by Linus' review) as I have been waiting for it to come in stock for a while. However, I was contemplating getting the pg27aq instead when it comes out. They are both IPS gsync monitors, but the pg279q is 1440@165 while the pg27aq is 4k@60. I am either going to buy a 980ti after the price drops next week or buy the pascal equivalent of the 980ti when it releases. I do NOT plan to SLI at anytime in the future. My question is, is a 980ti overkill for 1440p? Should I have went with 4k? Will pascal's $650 flagship be able to buttery smooth 4k game on a single GPU? What should I do guys?

Now if I'm not mistaken the gtx 760 supports G-Sync (but that's beside the point), but snce i heard about a new gsync moniter at CES 2015 I was thinking there may be some more to come so i was wondering if any one has heard about 1080p IPS G-Sync Moniters?

I am writing this message to thank the Linus Tech Tip community, give some feedback and not to ask questions, as I usually do. Long story short: thank you to all the community members who took the time to read my long posts with indecisive deliberations about a new monitor (this one is going to be quite long too). Many things you told me proved to be right on point. A few months back I received a 1080ti as a gift and decided it was time to upgrade my 9 year old 1200p acer monitor. I asked and read many things about resolution, IPS or TN, frequency, and adaptive sync technologies. Living in Japan made things slightly complicated as some brands are very hard or impossible to find (ViewSonic or AOC for instance) and the prices tend to be 20% or so higher than in the US. After much hesitation, I had set my mind on the acer xb281hk: 4k, 28inch, TN, gsync new for about 620$. Deep inside, I really wanted the X34 but it literally was double that price. I was still going to wait for November to purchase the monitor. Last week, as I was browsing Yahoo Auction, the Japanese équivalent of eBay, which by the way does not exist in Japan. I found a used Asus PG27AQ: 27’, 4k, 60hz, IPS, gsync. It was said to be in great condition and the starting bid was 420$, less than half the retail price (about 1000$). I register, and bid, just to give it a shot. To my surprise, no one else did and I ended up winning the monitor at the original bidding price. I received it a few days ago, and the condition was indeed impeccable. All cables included, and protective film on the screen. I tried it on ME: andromeda side by side with my 1200p Non gsync TN, and while I had been skeptical of people praising IPS over TN, I found that IPS was indeed so much more beautiful. Everything was more vibrant, blacks were much darker, colors brighter. While I always thought my TN monitor had beautiful a picture, it was like i had been playing with an opaque film on the screen. Panning on Andromeda was also eye-opening. GSync did not make the game faster but without the constant stuttering, it was much smoother and pleasant, even with fps in the mid 40s. 4K on the other hand is nice but I was expecting a bigger wow factor. I feel the community was right when they said that at 27 inch, 4k is mostly a gimmick. Yes, some details appear much clearer and everything feels sharper but I was a bit disappointed. However, these are my very first impressions on a monitor I will probably use many years. I am sure I will get to grow fond of it. Other pleasant surprise, turning down the in-game resolution to 1440p, I find it slightly less sharp but certainly not as atrocious as I had heard. As It is my backup solution for when my 1080ti will not be able to deal with 4k in a few years, it was a relief. Overall, I think it is great deal for the price, even if I wish it were a 1440p 144hz rather than 4k 60hz, another thing the community was right about. Thanks again! David
