  1. 1080 FTW VS 1080SC2 PCB

How different is the 1080 Ftw PCB vs the 1080TI SC2. Wanting to know if a 1080ti Hyrbrid cooler would fit on a 1080 FTW
  2. The back PCB of my GTX 970 SSC is really dusty, and it won't all come off using just compressed air. I heard that you can use Isopropyl Alcohol but I don't want to risk breaking my card. Does alcohol work to clean PCBs or should I use something else?
  3. Greetings I'm in the middle of building a compact media player for my parents out of old pc hardware. For this project I'm building everything custom so i wanted to know whether it's safe to remove the pcb from the power supply to save space. I'm doing this to remove unused space and reuse old hardware so I'm not planning to buy a sfx psu. If i do this is there anything that i should keep in mind?
  4. i kind of find it interesting, and id like to try it out. dosent need to have like 6 bazilion layers or the best auto router in the world, just maybe 3 layers or whatever. have nothing in perticular id like to design or anything i would want to actiually bring to production, just to play around mainly and see if i can come up with something neat. was thinking about designing a VRM i guess? could be pretty fun but idk. im not clueless about this stuff, but im nothing above and amatur with minimal experience. well if anyone know anything id love to try it out
  5. Hi this is my first time asking a question so I apologise for any mistakes, however I recently was changing my fan locations (the fans are connected to a pcb that is connected via the PSU) and when I reconnected the fans I had lost most of the rgb colours, I'm not sure What has happened as I have disconnected and reconnected the fans many times before but any advice you could give would be a great help. Here is a picture of the PCB.
  6. It's an old AC to variable DC adapter, that sometimes turns of and comes back on after pressing on the spring loaded potentiometer like thing or changing the voltage to a higher value (I know it's not a potentiometer) I wanted to ask how can I go on cleaning the pcb? I am speculating a loose contact Pictures :
  7. Hello, This is going to be kinda quick because it's late but I'll include as much as I can. While my pc was doing stuff, I wanted to change cpu fan orientation on my beQuiet Pure Rock heatsink. While releasing the fan holder things it kinda snapped off because it was tight and slightly forcefully landed on my motherboard, and i think it touched the back of the gpu too. The pc immediately shut off and it doesn't turn on anymore. It's typical fried symptoms : no leds, no response to power button, nothing. Upon inspection i saw that 4 motherboard traces were scratched enough too feel them with my nail(I'll include a pic). While desperately trying things to bring it back, my friend suggested I see if any chips get hot. And one did. It's an ITE chip, and it's connected directly to the tiniest scratched trace. So i was thinking if there's anything i can do at all? Before i pack it? Thanks in advance.
  8. PS4 Repair

So, don't ask, but an SMD resistor has managed to break off of a PS4 that I have. I can't find the resistor anywhere and am trying to find the value of it. I've searched high and low for schematics and can't find any. I've circled it in the picture. If anyone would be able to point me in the right direction that would be awesome! (excuse the circling of the memory, ICs etc, just an image grabbed from iFixit)
  9. Drilling holes in PCB

Hey guys, I was wondering if it's safe to drill a hole in a PCB considering i don't damage the traces. I've attached an image for your clarification. In the image I've marked the area where i want to drill and I've check there are no traces in that particular area that interacts with the traces i need, the ones i need are to the right.
  10. Hey Linustechtips Community, In january I bought a Gainward Gtx 1060 6Gb put it into my new system and everything worked just fine. But when I watched a video showing how to remove the stock cooler I got totally confused. The whole PCB was different: -Chip on the other side of the card (near the 6Pin rather than the Pcie Slot) -VRMs left from the chip instead of right -Holes for screws that the "original" doesn't have ->I will add photos (the picture of the "original" pcb is from a Palit card but it is the same as the gainward one so don't worry about it) Screenshot from a YouTube video from the competitive overclocker "Der8auer" Original PCB (This is a Palit Card but it is the same) My Card GPU-Z detects it as a Gtx 1060 6gb. I contacted the online shop where I bought it (one of the biggest where I live) and they just said that the photos of the products online can be different from the actual product. I also contacted Gainward but they don't reply. Now my question: Has anyone of you an idea how this can happen? Did I got a prototype or some kind of a review sample? Has anyone experienced something like this? Do I have the right to get a refund from the shop (cause I maybe wanted to change the stock cooler to the Alphacool Eiswolf what I cannot do if I got some weird pcb that no one else seem to have)? Thanks for all the people replying
  11. Hi, I would really like to buy the GTX 1080ti FE for water cooling but it is just too long to currently fit in my case. The FE PCB is 27 cm and I can have max 26 cm. Now my question is whether or not the companies ever make cards that have a shorter PCB? I'm not asking about mini version as the Zotac for the 1080, but just normal GPUs a bit smaller. Cheers.
  12. So I broke the PCB ON my seagate 3tb HDD. I've researched and am pretty sure I can just replace it as long as I swap the bios chip with my original. Hopefully that will work and I can get everything back. Does anyone know if that is the case? Or has done it themselves? Especially the removing and re-soldering the bios chip
  13. So, i'm kinda new to dealing with electronics, sorry for being a pleb I was cleaning the rust off of one of the switches so I could desolder it (that's a whole other problem that i won't go into) and I accidentally bumped into a microchip with the soldering iron and it went flying, now I can't find it. Now the LED's that are supposed to be on on the WASD and arrow keys don't turn on. You can see in the image what kind of microchip that fell off. So i was wondering if that piece is something that i can buy and solder on, or is it a chip that i can't buy separately.
  14. Hey Guys/Gals, I placed it in this part of the forum as it appeared to be the most Apt, but i've been wanting to learn how to solder electrical components for sometime now and i have finally gotten around to doing it. Ultimately i want to be able to restore and modify retro game consoles beyond the thorough cleaning which is what i currently do. So soldering/de-soldering capacitors, chips, wires etc... That being said i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions regarding any practice material that may be available. Given my first ever attempt at soldering was replacing voltage regulators on a genesis i had as a kid, which i botched horribly, i would like something that i can tinker with that doesn't make things a lot worse. I already have a fair amount of tools typically needed such as the soldering iron, flux, flat snips, multi-meter, and even one of those quad hands. I appreciate any suggestions you may have.
  15. Hello there fellow PC enthusiast! (tl;dr at the bottom) First off thank you for clicking on my thread, because I'll be needing any and all help I can get and any info at all would be great. Okay so I was browsing a certain popular New Zealand auction site and I found a deal. The deal was for a Radeon HD 7970 $30 NZD, faulty. So I decided to take it upon myself to repair it. I am already running a Gigabyte Windforce GTX 670. I have never repaired a GPU before so I am pretty much a level 0 noob at repairing this type of thing. But I am %110 willing to learn. I've made an imgur album with all the pictures, and don't worry there is no such thing as a potato quality camera on the Note 4. The guy I brought it from stated that.. "Found out that the previous owner had baked it but didn't know what he was doing as he most likely left it in there a bit too long. I would think about 2-3 hours and a steady hand to resolder some of the components down and you would be good to go" Once I received the GPU I put in my system and powered it on only to find that the fans spin, the logo shines bright and it doesn't display. So the dude who sold it to me was an honest one and didn't sell me a completely dead GPU only to say no refunds, thank the non-existent god I don't believe in. I have taken apart GPUs in the past to clean/reapply thermal paste so it was a relatively easy process. Upon first glance I saw no exploded capacitors or burnt out microchips. I took off a metal cooling bracket to find the problem. A series of small silver microchips had become de soldered, I guess when the previous owner put it in the oven. My guess is that that the chips solder melted and due to the placement of the GPU fans down they came slightly away from the board. Thus making it even more dead. Any help would greatly be appreciated. If you've gotten this far thanks for reading my post. Leave a comment with your thoughts. The have fallen off, how do I re solder them back on/ check to see if they still work?
  16. Just wanna know if the gtx 1060 (founder's edition) has similar PCB design like the 1080 has (same mounting points for the reference cooler). And also if the gtx 1060 gigabyte windforce OC(the one without backplate) has the same mounting points (I want to put a reference cooler on it).
  17. So this is really strange. I accidentally touched the back of my PCB after gaming and it was WAY too hot to touch. I took my thermal gun out and found that it is getting up to 231F near the middle edge of the card where the power goes in. Right where the power goes in is 187F. The back of the GPU is at 114.5F. I've had an EK waterblock on it for about 6 months without any issues. The temps stay in a great range. My core temps never go above 33C while gaming and it is overclocked to 1500mhz on the core. I don't think a backplate would help as the temps around the PCB look great. It is just near where the power delivery is. I have 2 - 480 radiators in a Corsair 900D. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! This is a picture of my card without the heatsink. I see some caps there. I highlighted the area on the right side where that 225-231F readings are coming from. Also, here is the waterblock I'm currently using. It isn't supposed to connect to that section of the video card as you can see there are cutouts to make room for the caps.
  18. GTX 1070 overclocking

I want to water cool my GTX 1070 but I don't know what heatsinks to get. I already have the g10 and the corsair h55.
  19. DIY Graphics Card Surgery

Just out of curiosity, would it be possible to take a founders edition card like for example the 1070 and place an aftermarket cooler that shares the reference PCB? Something like the EVGA SC cooler which has the same PCB as the founders.
  20. I recently opened my case to insert a PCIe USB 3.0 hub. In the process I dropped metal tweezers (was using to straighten pins on USB socket on PCIe card) and now worried I may have damage motherboard? Am I being too paranoid?
  21. This project has been stalled, I will not continue working on it! Technically I'm only building a part of a PC here, but I think it's complex enough to warrant it's own build log. (Mods, if this doesn't fit here, please move it!) So we all know vandal power buttons like these: They've been used in quite a few mods by now, and I'll use one in my next case, but they are a bit boring. So, what about having a switch like this, but with RGB LEDs that can be individually controlled? That's what I'm working on right now and the plan is as follows. The switch will fit into 16mm holes, have 12 RGB LEDs and a micro HDMI connector on the side that connects to the mainboard headers (PWR_BTN, HDD_LED and USB_2) with a modified micro HDMI to HDMI cable. Everything in the switch will have to be custom. The casing, the ring, the internals, the firmware, everything. I'll also make a small command-line tool for controlling it via USB. Short demo video: This is a short demo video of three effects on the current prototype. Try out the online Visualizer 0.2 here! Uses: This button might be used as a regular button that just lights up in exactly the colour I want it to, but it could also serve as a minimalist clock, as a spinning loading indicator when a webpage is loading or as an Xbox 360 style indicator of how many controllers are connected. The two header connections for the PWR_BTN and HDD_LED mainboard headers are multi-purpose, so if I used multiple of these buttons, I could either control an additional LED with either of them, or perform an action when the button is pressed. The possibilities are pretty vast.
  22. H220 X2 leaked

Good morning I apologize if my questions are answered in other threads, I did manage to find from a few threads that apparently cleaning the wet PCB's with the purest rubbing alcohol I can find may help, so I did use the search function before posting. Short Version, Brand new Swiftech H220 X2 reservoir cracked and leaked all over my motherboard, both R9 290x's and my PSU and sound card, want to know if the coolant will permanently damage the aforementioned components or will I be ok? Longer version Bought a Swiftech H220 x2 two weeks ago from newegg.ca, Got here Friday and I hooked it up but left it outside the system for a night to run and make sure it had no leaks overnight. Saturday morning there was not a drop on the paper towels I had under it and I thought victory was mine and it would be safe to install into my PC. I followed directions and carefully installed the new cooler lovingly and everything seemed fine from Saturday afternoon until today, Thursday at 1030am. I got off night shift late and was hoping to play some Star Citizen when I noticed to my horror the desk had a pool of liquid under my PC. I immediately powered off the system, glancing up at the cooler before I turned it off and noticed to my horror, the pump was cavitating, and the reservoir had a very noticeable and apparent crack that was not there the day before. About half of the coolant in the loop had leaked out over my motherboard, video cards, sound card, PSU, and cables. I removed the cooler, cards, and anything wet and placed it all on paper towels to dry. I have read in these forums that rubbing alcohol should help with the coolant on PCBs, but I am wondering... Is it likely that the components are salvageable? Has anyone had experience dealing with a swiftech RMA and will they cover damaged components if it was a manufacturing defect? I took pictures of the cooler when it arrived and when I installed it. There was no visible crack or damage, or at least nothing obvious to the naked eye when I installed it. There was no dropping or bumping of the cooler when it was installed. I cant figure out why it cracked like this. My PC was not bumped or moved or knocked over. And I did not excessively tighten the screws on the fans when mounting so I do not think I would of warped or bent the radiator adding pressure to the reservoir. Worth mentioning, did not add any dye or fiddle with the pump, reservoir or anything at all, Except I changed the fans from Push to Pull, using the H220x2 to exhaust air up and out of the case. it was a vanilla install. I intended to add an additional 120mm radiator in a push/pull eventually. (I have an FX-9590, please, no space heater jokes... I wish I had stuck with my 8350...)
  23. Hi, I want to mod my PC with Black-Blue color. I saw many repaint modding video's using plasti dip for case, parts, and armors, but not PCB. I want to paint the PCB of my GPU's back (unarmored), since I live in tropical country the humidity is a bit high and rust can hit my components very easily. I think the paint can protect it from rusting and give it a better looking, but is it safe? Can it damage the component? Thank you, and sorry for my bad English.
  24. PCB revision

hey so im totally new to water cooling and ekwb has a block for the gtx 970 but it says its only compatible with with MSI GTX 970 graphics card with PCB Revision 1.3 so basically how do i tell if thats what i have?
