Alright folks. I am computer hardware savvy, but when it comes to some of the complexities of some of the OS to choose, I have concerns I am not going to be able to pull it off. First, the hardware: Intel Core2Duo E7300 2.6GHz, 8GB DDR2 Ram, Sata0 - 120gb SSD, Sata1 - 1tb WD Black, Running Windows 7 x64 My needs: File server. There will be a D-LINK DNS-320LW Sharecentre with 2 x 1tb WD hdd in RAID1 for files Plex media server. This will utilize the internal 1tb WD Black As this is going to be on a separate network im not worried about it conflicting with my network/NAS, but ideally the software needs to have at least an Android App. Ability to log into the server remotely and stream/upload/download any files while on the road (bearing in mind im in the UK and the user is in New Zealand). Ability to be remotely logged into by Google Remote Desktop or something equivalent, and ideally run Pulseway That is really it. I also want this box to be relatively energy efficient. I am not sure if FreeNAS has much energy savings/sleep mode features. OK...so in my mind we are talking a Windows 7 vs. FreeNAS vs. Amahi vs. Tonido vs Ubuntu with Owncloud vs other linux based server setup. Which would you run based on the above needs, my need for some simplicity, and my desire for the most possible energy efficiency? Thank you in advance

I have used both Nextcloud and Owncloud and i seem to be coming into the same problems for both. After i configure Apache, PHP and MySQL i get brought to the web page where it should work. I watched many videos and read hundreds of articles online explaining different ways to set these up but they all keep giving me the same problems. i keep getting a bunch of gibberish when it should be asking for my login info. What i was using before was Freenas. I had the plugin for Nextcloud installed i had the jails configured correctly everything should have been working but it was bringing up the login page but it said that there was something wrong with MySQL an PHP setup. i scrapped that idea and now i tried installing Ubuntu 18.04 LTS terminal on my Windows 10 machine. I've tried changing which versions of PHP ans MySQL, i tried changing to a different version of owncloud from 10.0.4 to 10.0.10 but it keeps giving me the same problems. Im not super intelligent when it comes to Linux but every article has not worked for me. and i do not know why it is not working for me Any help would be amazing, Thanks.

Hello, I am trying to have a samba and owncloud server running on my raspberry pi. I am trying have them run off of a 2TB external drive. I can have on or the other running at any given point but not both of them running of the external drive at the same time. I know that the problem is due to permission so what I was wondering if anyone know how to change the user that smaba or owncloud uses to access files from the raspberry pi or any other solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks squackley!

So after listening to linus talk about owncloud I decided to start using it. Install went fine and I can connect to it through a browser easy. But all the clients give me the same ssl handshake failed issue. Looked on Google...not much help there. It is installed on the newest version of Ubuntu. If anyone knows this software please help.

I have been a LTT fan since he was still in NCIX, but never really participated in the community since he started the company until now. Anyway, I am just dipping my nose into private servers (not big racks of servers, but small personal storage servers, i.e NAS with outside network access). I am wondering what type of hardware would I need for a multi purpose OwnCloud server that does F@H, Boinc, streaming video from websites like Youtube and my country's own free Netflix-like service, an OwnCloud server for the family and Steam in-home streaming (or should I use Moonlight?) from my super high-end gaming rig (that is totally going to be outdated by this year end *sarcasm*). Right now I am doing only half of this from an old ASUS K43S laptop (specs in spoiler) and it gets very hot just from streaming live videos from a Chinese TV channel's website that my father likes to watch. I am planning to redo this project with new hardware and an Ubuntu distro of Linux (I have never used Linux until I got myself some Pi). I am planning to use the CPU power for Boinc projects and GPU for F@H. So far from what I gather in hardware froums, Nvidia GPUs has specialized H.264 encoding and decoding chips? So I guess game streaming from my gaming PC isn't going to be affected by GPU usage by F@H? I have no idea really, need some help with this one. Also might run a Minecraft server, not sure.

Hi everyone, we use owncloud in our company and I installed Keypass and shared the .exe file with everyone so all our workes use the same .exe. The problem is that in the same folder where the .exe file is located you will find the configuration files that manage accessibility and user rights for the password database. I don't want that certain users have access to this files so they cannot play around or copy our database. So what I wanted to do is the following: Create folder1 where the programme + configuration files + password database is stored and restrict viewing rights for certain users. Create a new folder (folder2) around folder1 where a shortcut to the exe is stored and have every user access this folder. Since some users have different PCs the owncloud folder will not be in the same directory on every PC which is a problem because then the shortcut won't work anymore. Is there a way to create a shortcut that is relative and ignores the everything that comes before /folder2 an just have it linked to folder1 (which is located in folder2)? It should look something like this: .../users/..../owncloud/folder2 shortcut for keypass.exe (ignores everything before /folder2) folder1 (visibility restricted for some of my coworkers) keypass.exe config-files database ... Thank you in advance!

Hello! Recently I was looking into getting my own cloud for backup and synchronisation with all of my PC's. I was looking at the WD My Cloud 3TB (which has a very attractive 150€ price tag), but after looking around I have found that it does not synchronise folders such as Dropbox or OneDrive would if I do not use it on my local network. Only one PC will be connected via local network, my laptop and other PC will need access via internet. Another thing is that my laptop has Linux, and WD has no Linux support except access through the browser. So after some digging I have found about the option to connect a Raspberry Pi to an external HDD, install ownCloud on it and it would run with synchronisation. What would you guys go for?

I have an Unraid server that I use mostly for plex. I would like to be able to use it for other things like owncloud. From what I have read and seen it looks like a pretty simple setup until I want to be able to use it remotely. I would really like to be able to use it for backing up/syncing pics and videos from our phones. I start getting lost when the guides I look at mention a DNS, ssl certificate, and anything else along those lines. If I could get pointed to some super simple easy to follow guides or anything like that and preferably free to super low cost. Really want to do this so that we dont have to pay for a cloud service like dropbox, Icloud, or anything else like that. Thank you.

Hi LTT community, I'm about to build my first home server that will hold multiple VM for all kind of stuff : - NAS (FreeNAS) - Local cloud (owncloud) - Routeur (PfSense) - Windows + security software (managing multiple wireless camera in the house) I would need a little bit of help to understand some of the concept related to virtualization. First, I understand that you need to install an Hypervisor (sort of main OS that's taking care of all the VM) Do you have any recommendations for a beginner (Esxi, unraid) ? Then I would like all my VMs to access and to write on my RAID storage. But my RAID will be created from the FreeNAS VM using ZFS technology. Is it possible to create a RAID using a specific VM and to share it across multiple VM ? Thank you.

To start this off, I have very little knowledge about setting up servers, so sorry if I don't understand the basics. I am wondering if my plan in setting up an Owncloud server which I can access when away from home will work or not. My goal is to have a server which has my photos/videos/movies stored on it, and I can access from anywhere. I plan to use an HP Compaq Pro 6300 as the computer to run it off of (I don't need things like ecc ram because I will have almost daily access to this server to fix it if something fails and am on a smaller budget). I will be using a WD red 6tb as the HDD that it is running off of. I plan to use Linux Ubuntu Server 16.04 as my operating system. I will be following the guides linked below on how to setup the operating system and Owncloud. The server will be on a residential Comcast internet connection, and I am just using the standard router that comes from Comcast. Is there anything that will not work in this plan? Will I have a server which I can access from any computer/phone on a different network? Thanks for the help!

I own a NAS System and i'd like to run a Debian 7 with Samba and Owncloud. I bought a SanDisk SSD 128GB Sata III for the main system and also for the cache to speed up the thing a bit. The ony thing missing In this system are the hard drives and have no clue which one to buy. The NAS should not run 24/7. Thanks for your help.

Hey guys, need a little help installing ownCloud on my Ubuntu 16.04 Machine. Everything has been installed and I can load the login page(localhost/owncloud). After trying to create a database using MySQL/MariaDB, I am getting the error "SQLSTATE [HY000] [2002] No such file or directory." This is a fresh install of Ubuntu, all I have installed is ownCloud and the ownCloud desktop client. Any suggestions?

So about a month ago i setup my first unraid box. love it!! ive installed and stored a lot of files and freed up TONS of space on my local machines, despite what other posts said earlier about installing games to a NAS/unraid i get remarkable gameplay! some textures take a few mins to load but nothing game breaking, also fps is great! My only issue is getting remote access or some type of FTP server to run. i've tried owncloud and proFTPd and a slue of others including dockers, NOTHING WORKS! what im hoping is someone can help explain how to use either the built in FTP server in unraid, owncloud, proftpd or anything they used and tested with success because a box that can only be used indoors is slightly wasted... at least in my eyes. the whole purpose of this box was to eliminate netflix and other streaming sites or webpages and how access to my own content when i feel... for free! PLEX i mean i've never had any success with b4 in the past being ps3 or apple/ android boxes, XBMC... geez i've just hated it since day one, but if someone is willing to explain i'm willing to learn. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me out. thanks well in advance for any and all contributions

I currently have a home server that I use to stream films and music from plex and backup my computer to. I'm planning to setup owncloud on it soon. I'm wondering if it is worth having a home server or to just use cloud services like google, spotify, netflix etc. I know this may be a tough question to answer but any input on the subject is appreciated. If you need to know any more information just let me know and I'll add it. Thanks,

I have an HP Z800 server running dual Xeon E5620 @ 2.4GHz CPUs. I currently have it setup running 4 different VMs configured as follows: VM 1 - FreeNAS: 16TB of storage using an IBM M1015 flashed to LSI 9211-8i in IT Mode via PCI-passthrough connected to 4 x 4TB Seagate NAS drives in Raid-Z. VM 2 - Windows 7 64bit Pro: Running various applications such as Hamachi, Plex, CrashPlan, and FileZilla. VM 3 - OpenVPN VM 4 - Ubuntu 14.04: Running OwnCloud, also meant for future testing of Linux apps. The HP Z800 itself has a 250GB SSD and 1TB HDD datastore drives, and 48GB of DDR3 ECC RAM. I intend to upgrade the hardware on this server, specifically the CPUs. I will be upgrading them probably within the next 6 months to dual X5650 Xeon CPUs to gain an extra 4 physical cores/8 threads mostly to add a few more VMs and/or rebuild/beef-up current VMs for future projects. My question is as follows: If I physically upgrade the CPU on the HP Z800, what will happen to my current setup/configuration? Would I break my VMs? Will the ESXI 6.0 server software not work? Would I need to start from scratch? Right now a pair of X5650s on eBay are roughly 160ish give or take a few dollars. I intend to get them when they drop a bit more to a more comfortable 100 or less. I am just very afraid to do the upgrade and watch my entire setup die, along with the many hours of configurations I've spent already. Any info/feedback is welcome.

are there any downsides to running any of the selfhosted cloud apps (owncloud, pydio, seafile etc) in a virtual machine, with the data being stored in a virtual hard drive file, as opposed to directly on the physical drive?

Can you guys recommend me a small fanless PSU and a case that fits all these components with no room to spare? Also does anyone know if the MSI board requires separate RAM Dimms or are the included? I cant tell from pictures if the RAM in included or if thats just some funcky ram slot ive never seen before...

I'm about to set up owncloud on my NAS and trying to figure out what the best way to connect to it would be I have a NAS, running windows 8, which is on 24/7. It is permanently connected to a vpn (using openvpn) which means the NAS has a different public IP than my router I have my main computer, same OS, but this does not get left on 24/7. However, it's public ip is the same as that of the router (no vpn) When I'm connecting to owncloud on a remote client, should I connect to the IP of the NAS (under vpn)? Or the IP of my router and then port forward to the NAS? The issue with connecting through my router (and then port forwarding) is that my ISP does not provide a static IP, so it may change at a completely random time. I could set up a dns updater on my main computer with a dynamic dns service so I can connect through a domain name, but as I mentioned, the main computer is not left on 24/7 which means there are going to be times where it misses an IP change - meaning owncloud clients cant connect until the computer is switched back on I have a dynamic dns set up for my NAS, and because it gets left on 24/7, domain.com will always connect me to whatever the changing IP of that box is. So I could just direct connect to the dyndns on my clients and it will get to the NAS directly Are there any major concerns with either method? And is one preferred over the other? If I have to connect to the router/port forward then I'd have to find some way to keep the dyn dns updated all the time

Hi fellows, I am a computer engineering student, and with other students, I am going to build/host a website. We are trying to do something with ~hopefully~ industry-like project management quality. We are going to use Trac for project management, with Mercurial as version control. We will also use Jenkins for CI. On a side note, I will also be running ownCloud for purposes unrelated to the project. I'm currently building a new PC on which I plan to host virtual machines. However, it is not completely dedicated to hosting VMs, it will also be my daily gaming rig. It will be on 24/7. PC Specs (only relevant parts listed): i7-4770k 16gb ram 256gb SSD 2x 1TB hard drives (not in RAID) (need more info?) Here is the software I wish to run in VMs: Django stack Trac Mercurial server Jenkins ownCloud Here is how I thought about splitting the software in the VMs and how much ressource to allocate to each. I would like your knowledgeable opinion on the setup, and/or improvement suggestions. Ex: Do I allocate enough/too much ressources to the VMs? Should I merge the 2nd VM in the first one? Should I split the first VM into smaller VMs? I think you catch my drift. Probably going to use VMWare Workstation. If you have other suggestions, like VirtualBox, please explain the pros/cons. VM1 - Linux server distro, 1 vCPU , 2vCore, 6gb RAM, fixed size vDisk, bridged network adapter Django stack Trac Mercurial Jenkins VM2 - Linux server distro, 1vCPU, 1vCore, 2gb RAM, , fixed size vDisk, bridged network adapter ownCloud I will forward some ports on my home router, setup a dynamic dns service, and grant access to these VMs to my collaborators (~6 other people). When the DEV is complete, I will move the Django stack somewhere else on its own for QA, then again for PROD. Thanks buddies. edit: formatting, tags, a bit more info

Hi folks of linustechtips, my Dad runs a small company and right now we pay for some external server space where we have owncloud installed for our central file management. At the end of this year we have to find our own solution and since I'm the one in the family how "knows computer stuff" I have been thinking and reading articels on the web the last couple of days how to solve our problem and be as cost-efficient as possible. All our system has to do is hosting files and be accessible from the web. We have 3 desktop PCs in our office, some Laptops and other mobile devices. So far I can think of 4 major solutions. 1) Install owncloud on our own 50gb (yup, thats enough for us) webspace. Our domain provider gave us 50gb of webspace when we signed the contract. So I could just install owncloud and have the same system as we have right now. Problem: The synchronization is (to be honest) not the best and we sometimes get conflict-files. We use it because it's for free but it also lacks some proper user management tools. 2) Buy a NAS (Synology) and configure a VPN tunnel. Better but not the best user management tools. 3) Buy a small desktop PC and buy Windows Server 2016 Essentials. The biggest advantage with Windows Server would be the user management obviously. Why would user management be important for a 5-person-company? Because I wanted to install KeePass and restrict reading/editing rights. I also want some of the folders not to be visible for other persons because they could extract the database-file or alter the xml-configuration to mess with our passwords. As far as I understood it, only proper Windows user management can help with this. In short - I want people to run the .exe-files on the server and not be able to mess with the rest of the programme. 4) Buy a small desktop PC, install Windows 7 and just create a home group and be corrected by you guys, that I can hide folders and restrict access with this method too. Although the possibility to log onto the server from any computer via this active directory thingy would be really cool. I would love to get some constructive tips. I'm really new to the topic of networking and I just want to keep the costs low but have maximum flexibility with a managable complexity of the whole system so that I can administrate it (and I am far from being an expert). Thank you and have a nice day!!
