  1. So how are hackintosh machines doing in 2020? I'm interested in exploring the OS for free however I don't know much going into it. What should I know before jumping into it? Might try it on my Acer Aspire E15 laptop - intel i5 - 2C/4T x 2,6GHz up to 3,2 GHz, 8GB DDR3 RAM, some trashy hd graphics and a GTX 940m. So it's not the worst but since I was going to install a not yet decided which distro of linux, thought that I might as well try this thing first.
  2. Hello, My Situation: I want to set up an unraid server as NAS and VM server. Then I want to have a network drive/folder via SMB/samba where i can put my important stuff. And then I want this "important" content to back up to an offside Raspberry Pi with something like 2 500gig hdd in a raid-1. Not required but would be nice live sync of the files, every file that gets deleted goes in a folder called "deleted" on the pi so I can go there if something gets accidentally deleted, every time a file gets updated because it was edited the for example last "3" versions of this file get saved for let's say 2 weeks if I need it for what ever reason. My Problem: I don't know where to start, this kind of project I never did something like this before. LTT showed something like this in one of their server videos but didn't explain how it works (that's not acutely a problem) As it themes right now I'm just not experienced enough for that project I try to find a solution my self but any help would be very appreciated My Solution: I used rsync, it's a linux only command (thanks again "electronics wizardy") type rsync --help when your in your terminal and you can see what all this extansions mean thats the command i use, if you need a exaple if you have any questions you can ask me: rsync -avzrhu -e "ssh -i "whre the ssh key is stored"" --delete "source" --exclude lost+found user@example.domain:"destination" I didn't manage to get this thing with the delted folder up and runnig nor with the versions but i will, try to do it and if i find a solution i will update the post again
  3. Hi guys. Troubleshooting wifey's workstation. I'm a windows power user and my run ins with macOS are brief and incidental. I know my way around the system and can google, but I am stuck on the apparently simplest of things: I cannot restore the files or the system from the Time Machine backup Background info: I accidentally updated her system to Catalina when doing some routine maintenance (too much time on my hands during quarantine, I guess). Quickly discovered the error of my ways when it transpired that her Adobe CS6 which she needs for work won't run (yeah, I found the Photoshop workaround but she specifically needs InDesign which is a 32bit app). What I had done so far: 1. Verified Time Machine backup integriry 2. Made one final backup 3. Verified integrity again 4. Downloaded macOS Mojave installer from the APP Store (***technically went with a bootable High Sierra USB which I then updated to Mojave from another installer as trying to install mojave directly was throwing up some errors) 5. Created a bootable USB 6. Erased the main HDD 7. Performed a clean install of macOS and we're currently at macOS Mojave Ver 10.14.6 Problem: 1. During setup I tried going for the Migration Assistant "restore from a Time Machine Backup" 2. On the "Transfer Information to This Mac" I can see the AirPort Time Capsule. Below there's the mac spinny thingy saying "Looking for other sources..." 3. I select the Time Capsule, click Continue and it prompts me to enter the password, which I do. (I tried entering it incorrectly on purpose to see if the input is accepted and it won't allow me to progress with the wrong password). 4. NOTHING HAPPENS - screen goes back to state in point 2. I can once again select the TC, enter password etc. For visual referecene: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203981 I cannot progress past screen 4 on to screen 5 I went ahead and installed a clean OS, downloaded all updates so the only remaining one is the one to Catalina, which, obviously I will not be installing. Additional maybe useful info: 1. on 3. I can hear the hard drive spinning up on the Time Capsule 2. when I'm in the OS I can see the Time Capsule on a list of my drives, I can connect to it in Finder and it showes a Data folder, inside of which there's one file: "wifey's iMac.backupbundle". It seems very large because in the time it took me to write this post Finder was still calculating size;) Lastly, wifey's System Specification iMac 27-inch (Late 2013/Haswell) | macOS Mojave | Version 10.14.6 | CPU Intel Core i7-4771 3.5 GHz | RAM 32GB 1600Mhz DDR3 | GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB Please send lawyers, guns, and money!
  4. Can someone point me to a easy to understand hackenstosh build guide? Im basicly looking for someone to hold my hand and walk me thru. I currently do not have a mac, only PCs. Im looking for Software help. Thank you everyone. Slappy
  5. I've always disliked macs. I've always seen them as expensive for the hardware you actually get and limiting as to the amount of control you have over the system. I usually use windows, with a server running various linux installs and a laptop that dual boots kali. However, I've been thinking more recently of making the switch to Mac. I program quite a bit, and I'm much more comfortable with bash than with command prompt. Now that I have the server, I can do heavier processing remotely if I get a GPU for it. I originally contemplated switching completely to linux; however, I also enjoy music production, and my software, ableton, does not support linux. I'm also trying to figure out what my setup should be. Another dilemma I have is whether to switch my desktop to linux. I want to be able to remotely access my gpu for neural nets, but I also want to be able to game. I could get a gpu that's more for the purpose of neural nets and parallel computing that will live in the server, but that's quite a bit of money. Thoughts on the switch? If so, what model mac? And if you think I should get a GPU for the server, which do you recommend? Thanks for all the advice!
  6. OSX has a nice feature called content cache. Read about it here In houses with low bandwidth it is very helpful. One of the biggest problems it solves is the nightly backup. This is a common problem that when an apple user plugs in their phone to go to sleep, it saturates the upload line, killing the internet for the rest of the house. With content caching on, the backup actually goes through the cache server so it is possible to, through QoS or similar, limit the upload of the server itself. Thus if you have 3 apple devices trying to backup simultaneously, they'll all share the same server QoS bandwidth limit. So my issue: Apple specifically blocks Content Cache from running on a VM (They say it and I definitely confirmed it). I'd love to just spin up a stripped down OSX VM that'll take care of the content cache instead of having to run a dedicated Apple computer. Thanks for the read.
  7. I have a late 2012 mac mini. It's been running slow for awhile and I erased the system and restored from scratch the system. It went back to running as fast as it did when I bought it (probably not literally but for the sake of this convo., let's go with that). Once I re-synced my backup cloud drive to the computer it became slow again. So I am assuming that both or one of the drives are bad. It has one ssd and one hdd, each 500GB. Since I have everything backedup in the cloud I can easy swap drives and get everything back. Question is, should I upgrade both or just one, and if both, should I just get one 1TB ssd drive or two 500GB ssd drives?
  8. So I am trying to install mac on vm in linux manjaro kde. i followed everything according to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATnpEOo3GJA and now when I am trying to load the VM this is what i am getting please help thank you.
  9. Hi all Im not sure what to do I need access to OSX for my work and I don't want to pay the apple tax for a Mac mini or and I Mac, so I THIS VIDEO from LTT and was wondering if it would be worth doing this I currently have a Windows desktop with decent specs but would ideally like a separate system. I have the current system to build: Link to build I wouldn't really be using the Linux system (possibly use it for a Plex server or web dev server not sure yet) so I dont really need a decent graphics card so not sure what to do. Also is the CPU and ram overboard? Also is there a better way to do it or get access to OSX. Thanks in advance for any help/ comments
  10. Hi all, Im looking for a new way to run osx on my pc I don't know weather it is best to build a new system and run Linux then virtually host osx on that machine like in This video or is there a better way to run it on windows. I have it hosted at the minute using virtual box but it's lagy and I can't get it to work on my ultra wide monitor. Thanks in advance for any help
  11. I recently watched an ltt video Link to video and I'm trying to build a system to boot osx through a Linux virtual machine. Iam looking to do a Ryzen system maybe a 2700x and was wondering what GPUs to pair with it if anyone had any suggestions. I'm a programmer and will only really be doing X code and swift sort of stuff possibly some web based stuff. Thanks in advance.
  12. I am the proud owner of a dual-boot MacOS and Windows system, and I recently got a new monitor. It's a Lenovo Y27G, and even though it has been panned as having horrible value, I bought it because the price dropped to half MSRP. Anyway, it's got all the bells and whistles. Among them is a 3-port USB 3.0 hub. Sick, right? Never had one on a monitor, so I was excited. I plugged my mouse, keyboard, and webcam into it and was ready to rock n' roll. I said, "Let's gooooo!" and fired her up, only to crash 20 seconds after boot. Boo. I think I saw something about MacOS having a hard cap of USB ports, but FR? a crash? If there's any way I can fix this, I'd love to be able to do so. It works just fine in Windows, so it's software, and it's MacOS's fault. EDIT: I forgot to attach the crash report. It's attached now. Also, the hub crashed my system only when it's plugged in during startup, with or without devices connected to it. MacOS USB Hub Crash Report.rtf EDIT 2: Apparently it was the USB port it was plugged into. MacOS must have beef with USB 3.1. The 3.0 port works fine. Case closed, ig. lol I have no idea why though. Perhaps someone could shed some light...
  13. Hi Guys, 1st post here so appreciate any help you can give. Recently bought an xps 9560, undervolted and about to upgrade ram to 32gb and repaste while I’m there. I only have 256gb of nvme ssd under the hood. So what I plan on doing is having 2 seperate external ssd for games and macOS. Does anyone have a link or could explain the steps involved in setting up a VM via an external ssd which can be mounted and dismounted when needed? For example, Would I just install VMware onto the ssd along with the setup files for OSX or does VMware install onto windows and then directed to the drive that macOS is installed on? I also presume i need to set a static drive letter for the ssd like the games drive. One last question, would there be any significant performance boost for the VM using a thunderbolt ssd over a usb3.0 ssd? Thanks ladies and gents
  14. I am in need of help, i need to make a bootable drive using a usb on a mac for my pc. About half way through using boot camp it will say there isn't enough space on the usb, when it is a 32gb and then when i check it says i have way more space than i need. Any help?
  15. After running this macbook on powerchord only because of an broken battery i finaly decided to buy a new battery but now when it arrived it doesn't work correctly. The battery simply refuses to charge and says "Replace now, Not charging 8%". Things i've tried: SMC Reset PRAM Reset Booting into Linux Mint and it said "Charging - Fully charged 8%" (It wasn't charging) Unplugging AC while OS was on and it just simply died with no difference next boot. Macbok pro 2011 (I think) Battery: battery A1322 (I know it's compatible) (Same as the original broken one)
  16. I need to upgrade at least 10 different macs running all different versions of OSX ranging from 10.6, to 10.6.7 to El-Capitan. I don't want to have to individually upgrade each mac version by version. That would take SOOO much internet bandwidth and time.
  17. Im currently working on a pretty cool python project. Looking for a partner. PM for detail. You need to be very good at python and bash. Cheers
  18. Introduction I decided to buy a MacBook Pro. Why? School. Now, before you tell me I could have got better hardware for my money, yes, I know I could. Heck I could have got myself a Razer Blade Stealth for the money I paid for this, however, I got the rMBP. Hardware I spent just shy of £1400 on this machine. For that, I got myself: Core I5 5257U dual core @ 2.7GHz 16GB 1867Mhz RAM - DDR3 Intel Iris 6100 Graphics 256GB PCIe SSD Storage 2560x1600 Display (Scales to max of 1680x1050 The about this Mac window: Wow, this computer is fast! It starts up really quickly, as in 10 seconds from power to desktop. I love it. I now am not scrambling to get lesson information down before class has fully started. I love it. 10/10 on speed. My only small grumble is the ports. I have: 1x MagSafe (YASSS! THE BEST THING!) 2x Thunderbolt ports 2x USB ports 1x 3.5mm headphone jack (what? are these still a thing?) 1x HDMI 1x SD card slot The one grumble is the HDMI port. It cannot run adapters, forcing me to get MiniDP to VGA rather than just using my HDMI to VGA adapter. I also need an ethernet adapter. WiFi is solid though. The Software OSX. The good, the bad and the ugly. The Good: Spaces are good. Almost as good as two displays, but not as good as two displays. However, I can now have information on one display, and my writeup on the second space. I never used workspaces on Linux or multi desktops on Windows, but on OSX, its just a swipe away. 10/10 there. The dock, its good. Better than the task bar to me. I prefer it. NEXT. Spotlight. It is awesome! Seriously. I had to go back to my windows desktop and install launchy on it to get a similar application. Apps are just 3-5 keystrokes away. Finder. It looks pretty and is fast. 60% charge used in 80 mins while playing Prison Arcitect. Can play prison architect. The bad: Finder - does not always update automatically. It is pretty good, but not perfect. I wish the views would be folder-independent. Damn, OSX eats RAM like I eat crackers. The Ugly: Chrome. It uses so much battery in comparison to Safari. So I now use Safari instead. Conclusion If you want a Mac, get one. It is fast, looks pretty and is an ok laptop for the money. However, don't try gaming, it is for productivity, not gaming. OSX is just as good and versatile as windows. I prefer it now. This laptop has handled school so far, so lets hope it continues too. 9/10 - improve finder.
  19. This thread is about why you love Apple's OSX. Why do you love it? Do you prefer it over Windows? What do you dislike? Do you find yourself all alone in an ocean of Windows or Linux, or do you find yourself with the majority of illuminated apple logos? Where could they improve? What could they bring back? What was your first Apple computer, where did you get it, how much did you buy it for, and what was it like when you first started it up? No we are not Apple fanatics, we are not silver metal casing and white illuminating logo lovers, we just prefer things a little.... well you will find out what the last word will be. My first apple product that I got was an old iMac. I don't remember the specs or year but it had the clear plastic all over it. I remember powering it on... wow. Plus it was free (it might have been stolen.... but who knows). The previous owner did not wipe the hdd. So a quick call to apple and $20 later I had some software on the way. I tell ya that was a awesome feeling. Installing the software and seeing all the animation was intoxicating. Windows could learn a thing or two from Apple. I hated to see it go, but $75 bucks wasn't too bad. My first purchased Apple computer was a 2012 Macbook Air 11 inch. I love this thing. I got for $400 from a classmate on the second semester of college. The feeling of powering it on and playing with updated software... ohhhh gives me a hard on. I love it because it is simple (took a little getting use to but with some homework I wasn't doing too bad). The OS doesn't take much resources like windows does. It is clean looking and I like that. Would I replace my Windows pc... nope. I love my Win. 7 pc. I will never let it go unless it's reached it's end like Win XP has. Software running of XP is impossible. I find myself to be in a mix of both windows and mac. I never see linux out in college. I don't have any hates just a few dislikes like how you have to go around your elbow to get to your thumb for certain tasks or finding things, or getting to a certain file or program or moving something. The command button is not placed in a good spot. Please share your experience.
  20. Hi guys, I was wondering if I could install MacOS Sierra on a Windows 10 Desktop PC, I have W10 on an SSD (850 EVO 500 GB) and I would like to install MacOS Sierra on my 840 EVO 500 GB and to have the option to dualboot between both after the UEFI BIOS screen, I have a Macbook to legaly download all the stuff I need (which I don't know). My desktop Specs: i7 4790K @ 4.8 GHz 32 GB DDR3 Kingston HyperX Fury 1600 MHz CL10 Gigabyte Z97X-Gamging 3 Motherboard GTX 1070 G1 Gaming W10 Drive: Samsung 850 EVO SSD 500GB The main reason I would like to do this is to decode H.265 files (no playback) because I can only use the decoder of the GTX 1070 to decode them during playback, but for example if I use any software (dvd fab, premiere pro, media encoder etc) and take a H.265 file and Output it into a H.265 file the decoder will not work, it's not NVIDIA, it's Windows 10 (tried on 7 and 8 and it worked fine but I would like to have OSX for a change along Windows). If I get a H.265 file and output it into a H.264 the decoder also doesn't work but at least the CPU H.264 decoder works and takes 15 minutes, but from H.265 to H.265 (Compressing Bitrate) it takes at least about 4 hours (and it's a 4790K Overclocked to 4.8 GHz) So I would like to know if the HEVC H.265 decoder is supported on OSX El capitan or MacOS Sierra because otherwise my whole process would be useless and I'm well served installing Windows 8.1 and using it when I have to Decode and Encode H.265. Thank you in advance, I know it's not an easy thread to answer and I know the complexity of what I'm asking.

  22. I am wondering if i could upgrade the SSD in my late 13, 13" MB pro, i know it uses a m.2 SSD, but will it support an NVMe (and the speed that comes with it) or will it just run normal ssd speeds, like the one im using right now? If this is the case, what SSD's will the macbook support?
  23. Hi everyone, Yet another problem with my MacPro... Regarding my last post, I did eventually manage to reinstall OSX El Capitan on the mac pro, but now that it all works, I still get some problems. I use this mac for music recording and I use Pro Tools 12.6 as my main DAW. When I create new music, you can save it as a folder with the Pro Tools file, the audiofiles etc. Normally on my windows pc and my macbook pro I can save it wherever I want (desktop, downloads, documents you name it), but the Mac Pro gives me the notification that those folders do not exist. I really hope someone here does know how to fix this problem because the temporary solution I have now is saving everything on a USB device or in the cloud (those 2 options are not that practical if you're working with audio). Also, when I want to extract .zip files, it gives the same error.. The error message is as follows: *filename* could not be extracted to "folder name" (error 2 - file or directory does not exist) The specs of the Mac Pro are as follows: 2x 2,4Ghz quad core Intel Xeon 28Gb 1066MHz DDR3 memory ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024mb GPU 500GB Samsung evo 850 SSD (bootdrive) 1TB ??? HDD
  24. I tried to change my username of my user and I accidentally clicked cancel instead of confirm, so i only have guest and standard users. Now I'm trying to give admin privileges back to my standard user and I need the password to the "superuser/root" user. Directory Utility and Terminal shows the password as a single character, shown as a *, and Directory Utility shows * with a data value of "2a".
