Hi, I'm looking for an SFF prebuilt that can deliver 75W through one PCIe x16 slot and 50W through another PCIe x16 slot, connected as x8 or x4. Does anyone know of a model off the top of their head? Optiplex 990 and 790 in SFF won't work. (see: attachment) Otherwise, I can't think of any other models with 2x PCIe x16 slots (it's okay if one is only connected via x4 or x8). The unit, without a GPU, shouldn't cost more than ~75€ used. My goal: CPU: 4C 8T min. turbo frequency: 3,8ghz RAM: 16GB GPU: 1x Nvidia Tesla M4 (50W via pcie) 1x Nvidia Tesla P4 (75W via pcie) form factor: as small as possible price: under 180€ What i was calculating with: M4 ~ 60€ P4 ~ 80€ pre build ~ 40€ Thanks in advance, Lenn

This thread describes the issues with installing an Optiplex 7010/9010 motherboard into a 3rd party ATX case. There is another thread for the Optiplex 7010 power switch and power LED pinout. Optiplex 7010 power switch I have observed if the front I/O cable is detached from the motherboard, there is an 'Alert! Front I/O Cable failure.' error message when booting up the PC. The F1 key must be pressed to continue. I thought I would investigate what causes this and other 'Alert!' messages. The Optiplex 7010 and 9010 (I have both) appear to use virtually the same motherboard in the mini tower (MT) variant. The key difference is 9010 has BIOS support RAID. The Precision T1650 looks very similar and also supports ECC RAM - it is also offered with Xeon e3-1200v2 family of processors, the fastest being the i3-1290v2. The fastest Dell certified processor for the 7010/9010 is the i7-3770. However, the e3-1230 v2 Xeon processor is apparently known to work in the 7010 too according to one Youtube video posted back in 2015. The Front I/O socket on the motherboard is smaller than normal. It appears the pins have a 2mm pitch instead of the typical 0.1" (2.54mm) pitch too. Update (30 Oct 2018): I've since discovered a post on reddit created by 'BlastingKap' two months earlier, who had also examined the Front I/O pinout on an Optiplex 7010: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/98y8x2/optiplex_7010_9010_motherboard_transplanting/ Update (28 Apr 2019): I also came across this youtube video https://youtu.be/Bz6s4wB-MDM Update (2 Jul 2021): Just a quick update. I'm still using 7010 and 9010 MT models. No changes to BIOS or Windows drivers since posting in this long thread more than 18 months ago. The 9010 runs macOS Mojave, I haven't upgraded to Catalina. Only issues I have encountered is the task bar in Windows 10 failing to respond every once in a while for past few years - restarting the Windows Explorer fixed the problem every time. I recently found instructions on how to reregister Start process - too early to say whether it will fix the problem once and for all. I fitted a cheap i5-3475s cpu into the 7010 in late 2020. In early 2021, the 7010 also started to freeze or crash after exactly 30 minutes of use - I traced the problem to possibly defective or poorly seated Samsung PC3-12800 DIMMs. I replaced the pair with Hynix PC3-12800 DIMMs. Note the presence of a 1k resistor to limit the current through the LED. The front USB3 sockets are served by a separate cable which plugs into blue coloured USB header socket on the motherboard. The pinout for the microphone and heaphone have a non-standard layout. The HDD LED requires an extra 1k resistor. The USB2 pinout seems to have a standard layout but a normal 0.1" pitch USB2 header plug won't fit onto the 2mm pitch pins. It wouldn't surprise me if the Optiplex 7020/9020 and Precision T1700 uses the same pinout for the Front I/O connector. The key features of the 7020/9020/T1700 are the use of Intel 4th gen Haswell processors. The MT/DT motherboards have an 8 pin power connector, and a 24 pin ATX to 8 pin adapter is required when planning to use a third party ATX PSU. The Optiplex 7010/9010 runs Windows 10 just fine. I have encountered some USB3 and HDMI issues. Fortunately, there are some fixes for them. The 7010/9010 can run macOS High Sierra or Mojave when using a processor with Intel HD4000 graphics, otherwise specific graphics card such as a low cost GT710 is required for any other processor. A mac/macbook is required to create the USB bootable installation media for macOS. https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/guide-install-high-sierra-or-mojave-on-the-dell-optiplex-7010-9010-desktop-pc-revision-ii.251736/

Hello. I recently bought a new Thermaltake Smart 600w PSU I needed to finally be able to use a RX 470 I bought some month ago for my Dell Optiplex 3010 motherboard with 12GB RAM, I3 3240, Windows 10 64bit I installed the new PSU, without the GPU and everything worked fine. The motherboard is old so it only has a VGA output which was fine because my monitor is a VGA only. Of course, the GPU I bought doesn't have a VGA output, but I thought I could use a TV with HDMI as a monitor in the meantime. I installed the GPU on the pcie slot and plugged the 8 pin connector and before plugging the PC to the TV I tried turning it on connected to the VGA monitor through the motherboard VGA output. The PC turns on with a message saying the current video configuration is wrong and I should plug the monitor to the GPU, which I expected, so the PC is recognizing the GPU. However when I connect the GPU to the TV through HDMI and turn on the PC there is no signal and the case gives the dell POST error code 1 2 blue On/Off button, the Dell POST code manual says it is a expansion card error, but specifically says it is not a graphics card error and I should remove or install any expansion cards I recently installed or removed. If I remove the GPU the PC turns on just fine. When installed, if connected from the Mobo, gives the message to connect to the GPU. When connected to the GPU, PC won't POST. I haven't tried connecting to another TV, since I have no other TV. I haven't tried connecting through DVI or Display Port since I have no DVI or DP monitors or cables. I haven't tried installing the GPU to another PC since I have no other PC nor I know somebody with a PC I could use to test the GPU. I'm from Venezuela, so it's kinda hard to buy stuff here at a reasonable price when earning 140$ a month One thing I noticed is that the PCIE 8 pin connector clashes a little bit with the GPU board so it doesn't go in all the way, it is just like a millimeter from going in all the way. I don't know if that's what's causing the problem and the GPU isn't getting all the power needed to work. I tried turning on the PC with the GPU installed on the PCIE but without the PCIE 8 pin to test if it was the 8 pin not being connected completely. The PC started just fine using the Mobo VGA port. GPU fans not spinning unlike when the 8 pin is connected.

Hi guys I am going to find out eventually but I will ask here too. I have a dell optiplex 7010 sff and I want to install two gpus on it (a quadro k620 and a tesla p4). The motherboard on this model of computer has two pcie slots, a full x16 3.0 and a x16 wired in x4 2.0. The 3.0 delivers 75w and the 2.0 25w. The quadro k620 draws 30w max but I don't intend on using it at its full tdp, can it run on the 25w slot?

I'm from North Macedonia, I got an old optiplex for free from a family member and i want to put a gtx 1060 in it, I own a xbox for my AAA games I just wanted a pc for my more niche games. i got to see around and not only gtx 1060 but every type of graphics card is ridiculously overpriced, 120 eur for a 3 gb gtx 1060, I understand pc parts are more expensive over here but when i go to ebay for germany i can find plenty of 6 gb gtx 1060 for like 60 eur. what to do?

I can’t get my GPU fans to run on boot stably anymore. I was able to do it once by fiddling around with afterburner but idk if I got lucky or something but they just stopped spinning and won’t spin up again. It’s a Dell Optiplex 5070 with a i5-9500 and an RX 6600, so I can’t just adjust GPU fan curves in the bios or anything. It’s a PowerColor Fighter RX 6600.

Hello all, i have two dell OptiPlex's (a 7010 with 3rd gen i7 and a 790 with 2nd gen i5). I am looking to upgrade their CPUs, but want some opinions first. This is to my knowledge all the cpus that will work in these machines: LGA 1155 cpu list – all processors Intel: Xeon, Core I7,Core I5, Core I3, Pentium, Celeron – FCLGA1155 socket (specifications) – CPU-LIST.COM The 7010 is being used as a server (for Virtual Machines and data ingest from Hard Drives and the like to images on a separate NAS) The 790 is being used for small games, content creation, etc. (will have rx550 i think eventually ) I've never used Xeon so if anyone has experience, please let me know how they perform and how they compare to intel core CPUs. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

I recently came across this thread while looking for advice on how to build an optiplex sleeper. I wanted to buy a ryzen motherboard inside of my optiplex case 7010, but like him, i'm having problem with the power button. He says he used a jumper wire to connect the power button, does anyone know what that is and where i could find one? thank you to whoever responds My current build is a i7 3770 16 gb of ram cxm 650w 1660 super the i7 3770 has been good on most games at 1080 60+ fps, but i know eventually, it wont be. So im looking to upgrade to a ryzen board. I love the idea of building in optiplex case, so i would like to keep the case

I currently have a Dell Optiplex 980 for my private Minecraft server. I want a power efficient server which is not too loud. Should I continue buying more Dell Optiplex computers or should I switch to a cheaper alternative?

Hello, I was wondering how to unlock that power draw.. The PSU is not that crappy proprietary 80W stock Dell power supply. It is a new, standard and modular one. It is the Corsair SF450 which can supply 450W. The CPU draws 73W so that leaves a little power for the rest of the computer. Does anyone know how to do that?

Hi, I'm looking at using/ upgrading a old optiplex with a SATA3 ssd, 4590, and 16gb ddr3 to try and set up a steam caching server, along with some other smaller servers (2-5 vinilla mc, SCP Secret Lab, etc) Mine main question is what my bottlenecks are going to be and how much it's going to affect performance of the cache. Ideally once I have that then i can start looking at what upgrades I should get and/or whether they are going to be worth the cost. I also don't know if this is the right place to be asking so please point me in the right direction if it's not Thank

Budget (including currency): ~AU$500 Country: Australia Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Plex, (Linux) VM's, NAS Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Hi all, this one is a little complicated and not 1 build per say... in short: I want a little more power in my NAS, and add a second SFF machine to my setup (HTPC). I currently have an unraid NAS running on: Pentium G5400, Gigabyte B365M HD3, 16Gb RAM, Quadro P600, Corsair RM550x, LSI HBA running a 7 drive array. There are two parity drives. The NAS runs a fairly typical array of docker containers for downloads, file sync, and media server duties. Most of the time, this processor is enough for my needs. The processor seems to be a bottleneck during times such as disk preclearing, parity checks, and when transcoding more than 1 video - all threads get pinned to 100%, or near 100% usage for more than a few seconds, and file access slows down, even on the cache pool. Also, I can't run transcodes (even on GPU) and something like a parity check simultaneously. I'm also keen on playing around with some virtual machines on my unraid server, mostly just for fun/curiosity. I'm sure that my transcodes (Plex and Tdarr) are using the GPU, so any CPU use is just unavoidable overhead. My plan is to upgrade the CPU to something efficient, but has more cores/performance than the G5400. At the same time, I've been thinking about adding a SFF HTPC to our living room. So I've been eyeing some refurbished Dell Optiplex 7060s that happen to contain an i5-8500T - these are priced around $500 or so, which is as much as I would be willing to spend on this project at this point. They also happen to be nice and small, which wins mega points with the rest of the house. So the idea is to get one of these Optiplex 7060's, and swap the i5-8500T with my Pentium G5400 in the NAS. The NAS will be upgraded to an i5-8500T, and the Optiplex will be downgraded to a Pentium G5400. We won't be gaming on the HTPC, just Plex/Netflix etc. some web browsing, using the included Windows 10 Pro license for now. Is this a wise move? Would this be possible on the Optiplex? These chips should be of the same generation, use the same socket, and are compatible with the same chipsets? Feedback is appreciated. Thanks! P.S. There are various models of 7060's so the i5-8500T may end up being an i5-8500 non-T version, depending on availability.

Hello, I want to use my Dell Optiplex 3020 Micro (4GB RAM; i3 4160; Samsung SSD) to idle steam games (Steam idle master) (for card drops). The pc is running Windows 10 home. Is there any better OS for this purpose. And is the pc made for this kind of application. Should i restart it sometimes? Thanks for your help

So it all started when I was browsing PC parts forum and saw a guy selling a bunch of Dell refurb RX 640 4GB that were single slot, half-height cards for MYR230 (~USD50) with shipping. To the uninitiated the RX 640 is a rebranded RX 550. At the current market, this ain't a bad price for an RX 550 equivalent 4GB card. I also wanted to build something for my wheelchair-bound neighbour, since the lockdown life has been rough. And I kinda owe him my very identity because he was the one that gave me a copy of Warcraft 3 when I was a kid almost 20 years ago and it's PC gaming for life. Right now he's still using the very same Pentium 4 with Nvidia chipset on-board graphics PC he had all these years. So i bought it in a heartbeat (which was the right decision cause moments after it was all gone). It arrived 2 days later and lo and behold it is exactly as shyt as I expected it to be. PERFECT It only comes with DP and mini-DP but I can manage with a HDMI adapter since I bought a brand new Lenovo L24i-30 Freesync 1080p 75Hz monitor for my neighbour as well. The first thing that cane to mind was cheapo Dell SFF Optiplex that are available everywhere. I settled on the cheapest 2nd/3rd gen Intel one I could find since they are significantly cheaper than 4th gen and above in my region. I bought one with an i3 3240, 4GB DDR3 and 250GB RAM for MYR300 which I will all change out later. Now I went ahead and bought two sticks of 4GB DDR3 RAM for MYR100, then proceeded to sell the included 2 x 2GB DIMMS for MYR50 online. I also added in a Crucial BX500 480GB SSD (Which I regret not getting the 1TB later) for ~MYR250 and sold the 250GB HDD for MYR20. As a bonus I also bought a USB 3.0 half-height PCIE card for ~MYR40 which I will need to transfer all the games I want him to experience that he missed out for the past 20 years. Alright, now things are coming together. The insides are so compact and tight, let's see how're the thermals. Well, as expected the thermals are horrible. CPU is fine but GPU idles at 60°C, watching YouTube jumps to 70 °C and shoots to 94°C when gaming. I guess this is what happens when you cram an RX 550 into a wire mess SFF case with a dinky little 80mm intake and a single slot, half-height cooler. Let's try changing the fan to an Arctic P8 and see if we can get better thermals. Oh great, Dell even makes their fan header a 5-pin proprietary design. Guess I'll need to buy the fan adapter off Taobao and wait a week. Cost of the fan was MYR35, adapter with shipping was MYR8. In the meantime I decided to upgrade the i3 to an i5 3570S that I found for MYR160 with shipping, and I sold the i3 for MYR80. Cool I'll also repaste the GPU and add some thermal pads for the VRAM while I'm at it. ------------- Well a week has passed and my adapters are here, the Arctic P8 fit in snuggly and the adapter works. Buuuuuut, it was turning super slowly in stock config. Good thing I used Google and found that people use HWINFO to control fanspeed on Dells. HWINFO reports the Arctic P8 to be spinning at 7000rpm lol, I guess this is why it was spinning so slowly, the embedded controller was trying hard to slow it down. I guess Dell even has proprietary OWM singals. So I manually adjusted the fan profile, set HWINFO to start minimised with fan control on startup, voilà. Thermals are much more acceptable now. 50°C idle and 89 °C when gaming. Not like amazing but at least it ain't throttling. I loaded some of my favourite single player games: - DOOM 2016 -Quake Enhanced - Warcraft 3 - Homeworld Remastered - MGS V The Phantom Pain - RE2 Remake - Yakuza 0 - Starcraft 2 Trilogy - XCOM Enemy Unknown - Civ VI - Skyrin Special Edition This is where I regret not getting the 1TB model cause there were so many more games that I wanted to load on for him to enjoy. Oh well, this is what I'm sticking with. All in all I'm quite pleased with this build, it costed quite cheap during the PC parts shortage. DOOM was running at 50fps at 1080p; RE2, Yakuza 0 and The Phantom Pain at high 60fps+ Not bad at all Parts list: - Dell Optiplex - MYR300 - RX 640 4GB - MYR230 - i5 3570S - MYR160 - 2 x 4GB DDR3 - MYR100 - Crucial BX500 480GB with 3.5" cage - MYR250 - Arctic P8 with adapter - MYR43 - SFF USB 3.0 card - MYR40 Sold i3 for MYR80 Sold 2 x 2GB for MYR50 Sold 250GB HDD for MYR20 Total system cost ~MYR975 = USD235 Monitor was another ~MYR500 = ~USD120 I had some unopened bundled Dell keyboard and mice lying around to be gifted with this rig as well.

I work for a large corporation. I work remotely, and I'm provided with a corporate imaged desktop computer. They told us they would give us laptops, but reneged on that promise. I want to travel. I shouldn't be stuck at home, when I can do my job from anywhere that internet is available. It's just not feasible to lug a mini desktop computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, webcam, and headset into a Starbucks every time I have to make that money. I highly doubt I could just clone the hard drive to a laptop, because the image used is ridiculously locked down, driver compatibility, and the mac address is how I'm provisioned onto the VPN. How hard would it be, to buy an old, laptop, with a good keyboard and screen, and transfer the logic board of the Dell Optiplex 7070 into it, and get it hooked up and working with the laptop parts? The crafting and fitting it into a case, should be the easy part. It's the connecting to a laptop screen and laptop keyboard that will be the challenge. I don't necessarily need a battery, it can be plugged in full time. Touchpad wouldn't be necessary, because I would use a wireless mouse. I know I'd have to worry about thermals... some of our software tends to ramp up the fans on it. It has to be reversible... because eventually I'd need to turn in the computer, whether for an upgrade, or if I leave the company. Does anyone have recommendations for a donor laptop, and how to go about connecting the keyboard and screen? Or a different solution to my problem?

Dell makes computers. Dell makes monitors. You would think that Dell could find a way to merge the two without making an all-in-one – And you’d be right! Let’s look at the OptiPlex 7070 Ultra… Buy Dell OptiPlex 7070 Ultra Desktop (PAID LINK): https://geni.us/ONKV

Computer Randomly Shuts down - possible PSU issue?
SamuraiSlayer98 posted a topic in Troubleshooting
I have been having issues with a dell optiplex 780 that I've modded to work as a media center and gaming PC. The computer shuts off seemingly at random. The event log in windows says the shutdowns are being requested by the button/lid. I read somewhere online that this can sometimes be linked to a PSU. I opened the psu and found a couple bulged caps. Is it safe to assume the psu is dying?- 2 replies

This is my first ever desktop pc that I purchased a few weeks ago. Its a Dell Optiplex 9020, i5 4590 (turbo boost locked at 3.5ghz) 16gb ram 16000, nvidia gtx 1050ti 4gb OC edition with some aggressive ( on the memory clock side) msi after burner settings. Now did I win the silicon lottery? I'm getting 55fps on gta 5 at ultra settings at 1440p on a 144hz monitor. The game plays incredible with no hitches. My performance is 59% cpu and 55% gpu usage. Give or take once in a few frames cpu will jump or gpu vice versa I was looking at upgrading my psu and getting a radeon 580 or 590 but all the benchmarks I've seen on 1080p reviews show about 65 to 70 fps on Gta 5 and these system are a lot more modern than mine. I hope I struck gold because I rather not spend anything on a dell optiplex lol

Hello there, I recently was handed my cousin's OptiPlex 390 for repair (PSU shorted out) and once I fixed that she now had a PSU with the required cables for a graphics card, I decided to throw a 460 I had lying around in it for her. It is a stock OptiPlex 390 with a semi-broken power button, some custom RAM (I can produce exactly what kind if necessary but there are 12 gigs, 1x8 and 1x4, and an EVGA 450 W3 (80+ Standard) and I'm installing a Geforce GTX 460 into it. The problem? It doesn't detect, whatsoever. The BIOS doesn't read it at all, windows had a go at it, sending it to "Other devices" as an Unknown device (hidden) which would not accept a manual install of the 460 drivers, nor would GFE pick it up as being there. I tested the GPU in my personal PC (OptiPlex 7010) and it worked right away, didn't even need to install drivers. I then installed my 970 into the 390 and it worked just fine, with the exception of the fans not spinning (not surprising with her PSU, but I got drivers installed and got an output, that's what's important.) Here is a list of troubleshooting steps I have taken, I may forget some things here - Formatted the 390 Hard Drive -Reinstalled Windows 10 Clean - Updated BIOS all the way 10 version 14 -Pulled the CMOS for upwards of 20 minutes, with all power in the case out -Run the GPU in the 390 case off of the PSU in the 7010, while the rest of the 390 ran off its own PSU -Checked BIOS for PCIE settings (there aren't any, nor are there any settings to turn off onboard output, although that shouldn't matter as it didn't with the 970) -Tried booting with only ram that is used in my 7010 (in case the GPU needed ram and didn't recognize the RAM in the 390 for some reason) -Successfully used the GPU in my 7010, and a 970 in my 390 (neither board nor graphics card seems to be) -Run the 390 wholly off the 7010's PSU. I may have forgotten some things and will edit on anything that is mentioned I forgot, or any new things I try. I thank you all in advance for your help.
