  1. An interesting bit of Texas Computer History, an AMD Opteron Prototype Cabinet, ended up in my possession here in Houston. This case was one of a handful of prototype cases which were produced for the AMD Opteron Launch of 2003. It was one of less than two dozen produced for trade show events. This particular case was at Expo in Germany that year. It was a spare, and never fitted out completely with motherboard but all chassis parts were included, it then ended up back in the USA and at a computer store in Texas, where on of the employees grabbed it thereby preventing it from being scrapped as several other of these cases reportedly did, meaning this could be one of very few surviving cases out there. As it's tricky to assigning value to rare things these days, I'm curious to see what the LTT community thinks the value of this Opteron Cabinet is?
  2. So I have a server set up, with a Supermicro H8SGL motherboard and an AMD Opteron 6282SE cpu. I bought both of these second hand, what I did not realized at the time that the cooler the guy gave me was a 1U cooler with a 40mm fan, which totally can't handle the heat. So I'm on the hunt for a new heatsink and fan combo, but as I see there is no market for G34 compatible coolers. There is a Noctua type which would be my best option, but there is not a single one on stock. There are two Dynatrons too, the Dynatron A14 and the Dynatron T575 which would be great, but as I'm located in Europe, the shipping costs are exceeding the value of the cooler. I found some mentions of a Musky mod for CM Hyper 212+, but the forum posts detailing this are gone. So I'm asking you, if you have any cheap mods for current heatsinks, or heatsinks that are compatible (but that's not detailed in their specs), please comment. The height of the heatsink doesn't matter, I have a big tower case. I'd like at least an 92mm but more like a 120mm fan compatible heatsink. Thanks for reading my post, have a nice day!
  3. Hey all, I've been upgrading my home rendering server and was wondering if anyone knew of a power supply which has 3 (count em) 8 pin EPS connectors. Or 3 4+4 connectors for that matter. So far I haven't managed to find an off the shelf server option. If anyone has information regarding where I can get a suitable PSU I would be extremely grateful, I'm also unaware if it's possible to achieve this with a modular PSU and custom cables.
  4. Retired server hardware is always in ample supply, so why not reduce e-waste and build a MONSTER budget workstation? Buy a Threadripper CPU instead to save yourself the headache: On Amazon: http://geni.us/LDLo6 On Newegg: http://geni.us/zoBpE
  5. I have two dead Opteron 6276 laying around that were recently replaced with two 6172's as twin 16 cores lead to some system instability with my board of choice. So i had been looking around on the internet about how delid and seeing if it is worth it as i have a 7600k that is surprisingly warm even compared to my old fx-8320. So that got me thinking about these huge Socket G34 Operons, quick google search and in images, i could not find a single slide from AMD on the bare die of this particular cpu family let alone anyone who has taken off the IHS which is soldered on, never could find any information on that either. After finding out that i could not fit a razor blade between the glue on the IHS and PCB i took it to a vise to get a blade in. After cutting all around and knowing i was all the way in, i had to use a lighter to undo the soldering and boom the IHS just pretty much slid off. One of the little transistors or whatever those are around the silicon did break off, but its all fine since it was dead. For my first Delid i guess it went well? let me know what you guys think.
  6. hi to all, im from the philippines and im starting to have interests in servers from the internet cafe's client-server configuration here in South East Asia.i bought second hand parts for the sake of learning server configurations and diskless management configuration. They are using servers to create a diskless management system form cafe clients. i've read some softwares for these and i reviewed them too.(i decided to use HP RCS VIM because it also supports bandwidth management like pfsense) and for the hardware part i manage to get a cpu+mobo+ram bundle for about 50USD(2,500 php) please rate for what can i extract from these components for what i have for am i going to build and what can i do for the problems i encountered. AMD Opteron 4122 2.2Ghz(quad-core) processor Super micro H8SCM(-F) micro-ATX server motherboard 8GB (2x4GB) 1333Ghz hynix server ram( i haven't check if it's Registered ECC or what) I've added some parts like a surplus korean 500watts true rated PSU. an AVR + desktop switch and 60Gbs SATA HDD for an extra 40USD (2,000 php) for testing the parts, i used a 5400prm 60Gb laptop SATA HDD.(planning to buy a server/enterprise grade HDD when there is available) as of now. i'm not on the performance yet. because I'm having problems with my parts. here's what happened.when i turn on my system after it initializes, I noticed that it detects some form of RAM error that requires me to press F1 to continue..then after some restarts it suddenly disapprears.(is it a sign that my memory is a registered ECC RAM or just un buffered server RAM) when i'm still installing a windows server OS. it fails over and over again(i manage to install the windows server on my laptop using the 60gb drive) but when i attached the drive back to my server, it suddenly shut off like a form of a power cut. i haven't test it yet to run all day because it happen about 4 times for the entire 3 hours of testing the system. i see a led blinking on my motherboard on a fix rate aside for the mother board power led which light perfectly normal. Does it signals me that there is something wrong with my system? or my power supply is too low for my server board and other components? thanks in advance for the ideas and suggestions. i'll upload pictures as soon as i get home. i forgot to take pictures for what i did last night.
  7. I am looking for a Xeon processor that could be used with pfsense that is low powered for my router. I am ok with red or blue cpu’s but I was thinking that xeons are better at staying on 24/7 and stuff like that. thanks?
  8. Hi I saw, that Linus again tried to play with 2X 4C Yorkfield platform and that got me thinking. I know, that you can get AMD Opteron 6276 (16C Bulldozer 2.3GHz) for around 15-20 US bucks, Opteron 6376 (16C Piledriver 2.3GHz) for 20-25 bucks, or from the Intel side, X7550 (8C Nehalem EX 2GHz) for laughable 4 bucks and E7-2850 (10C Westmere EX 2GHz) for around 15-20 buck, if you got good deal. I played with these platforms long ago, but I dont have any by me now. Does somebody still use them? Even today I use my trusty old dual X5670 for my server and they are good enough. What about this big hi-end grade grandpa's in today's workload in perspective to power/watt and cost of the whole system. I would love to hear any echo on that! Thank you for reading
  9. Hi! I've had this project for a long time to build a Minecraft server (The hardware, just to be clear ?) and I think I have saved enough money now. I'm planning to take mostly parts from eBay (The SSD will be brand new from Amazon and the Case will be a modified Dell Precision 450) Here's my build: CPU:AMD Opteron 6328 @ 3.2GHz 8-Core Motherboard: X89 Chipset Socket G34 PSU: Cooler Master Masterwatt Lite 500W 80 PLUS RAM: HyperX Fury 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz GPU: NVidia GeForce GT710 (Just for the setup, already bought) Case: Modified Dell Precision 450 (Front panel made from scratch) SSD:Patriot 120GB SSD For a grand total of 268$ CAN. I don't have a CPU Cooler yet, as many don't really fit my budget (looking preferably for a passive) and I might add 2x120mm fans from UpHere in the front panel. The system will power on with a simple button that I already have. It will run on Windows 10 and have a Ethernet cable connection of 60Mb/s in download and 10Mb/s in upload. Do this build seem viable or I should consider another option? For note, I have a budget of around 350$ CAN and/or an old system I can use (Core 2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66GHz 6GB DDR2 RAM, same GPU). Thank you for your answers!
  10. I am creating a computer (on the cheap) to use as a media/file server. This is replacing my current "server" which is a Dell Dimension 8300 (a Pentium 4 machine). I searched eBay for parts to make a machine as cheap a I could. I knew wanted to use an AM3 or AM3+ CPU, so I got myself an ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 for a pretty good price. For a CPU, I picked an AMD Opteron 1389. It's an AM3 CPU and only cost me $15. Checking the CPU compatibility list at https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A97_LE_R20/HelpDesk_CPU, I didn't see this chip listed (I see other Opteron chips which I cannot find on eBay) but I see other similar Athlon II X4 and Phenom II X4 chips. Anyway, I tried the Opteron 1389 and the system would not POST, I got POST code 62. Unless this is a RAM issue, I think it's the CPU (I'm using DDR3-1333 RAM). I found an AMD FX-4100 for like $20, so I can get that to make sure the system boots and is on the latest BIOS. But, my question is there a way to mod/update the BIOS to support "unsupported" chips? There's an Opteron 3365 that I was considering "upgrading" to, is there a chance that will work? The 3365 is at least an AM3+ CPU.
  11. Hi. I made an account specifically to both ask and share. I recently bought 24 Opteron 6128 CPUs because I had nothing better to do, and noticed that only on two that the IHS is smoothed over in the corners. Anyone know why this would be, whether it be from manufacturing or someone(seemingly unlikely as it seems pretty precise) doing it themselves? Otherwise, enjoy staring at a bunch of Opterons.
  12. So a while back I was able to get my hands on a "relatively" new server from someone who bought it from a business that was downsizing. Originally I just wanted something to run Plex but this server is waaaaay overkill for that function and I am trying to find other things to do with the server. The server is a IBM x3755 m3 with 4x Opteron 6276 (16 core), 256 GB DDR3, 2x 450 GB SAS disks, and 6 open drive slots. It also has 2 dual port fibre PCI cards (which I see no use in for home function). So essentially I have all this horse power and not a lot I can think to do with it. Just wondering if anyone has any good ideas on what to do with something like this?
  13. First time posting on this forum so sorry in advence... also im bad in english Trying to build a pc with 6282 opteron basically, pc booting with a 6174 opteron updated the bios to 3.5c on my h8dgi-f supermicro motherboard change the 6174 for 2 opteron 6282 pc not booting error is 5short and 1long beep wich i think means no ram f*ck around with the ram but nothing pleaze halp
  14. So I've spent dozens and dozens of hours, and over $3000 of my money buying various hardware, CPUs and GPUs, testing crypto mining, specifically for mining CryptoNight currencies. This post is compressing all that info learned, free of charge to anyone. Maybe a poor financial decision on my part considering most people who spent a ton of money to learn something don't just give it away for free. Yes it's a very long post, but one does not simply compress 50-100 hours of experience into a paragraph or two. My Results: I have come to this conclusion having testing R9 390s, 390Xs, 5870s, r7 270, gtx 760s, gtx 750tis, gtx 1080, gtx 970s (various models with different memory configs). After learning what was good at Mining cryptonight currencies, such as Monero, I first learned that cards such as GTX750tis were AS efficient price to performance wise to mining as the higher ends cards like a GTX 1080. Example, you could buy 4 GTX 750tis and they would match a 1080's mining performance and wattage while costing half as much. 390Xs were pretty good too but had a mucher higher buy-in cost. My first setup was to experiment with GPU mining systems and I had a 5-8 GPU setup with various cards constantly swapping in and out for testing. After this I moved to testing CPUs, originally with a dual Xeon server. The CPUs efficiency peaked my interest, and I immediately began comparing CPUs to GPUs for mining the currency. After extensive testing, I found one extremely key fact: A efficient and well planned CPU based mining setup would mine as good as a comparable GPU setup dollar for dollar. It would however perform less favorably electricity efficiency wise, but this is offset by one massive factor: GPUs are price inflated, making investing in them very risky. The Opteron CPUs I settled on are not nearly as price inflated as GPUs, meaning if the currency were to suddenly tank you don't get destroyed by poor profitability; you're still left with very powerful servers you can resell. Another huge benefit is these Opteron servers are extremely modular compared to GPUs. My GPU setup had cards laying exposed everywhere and just a mess of cables and adapters that have no resale value at all. It was messy and unsightly. My Opteron server cluster, I literally just stack the thing, in a perfectly contained, perfectly stackable setup. Most intense GPU setups have an expensive metal rack to hold them. you can just stack these servers on the floor with no extra hardware costs and it'll run and look good. So key points to a CPU based mining system : On par with GPU performance with no risk of lost value to severely inflated GPU prices, and it has an extremely expandable and modular system setup. These traits make it a far less risky investment for you and just easier all around to setup. On top of this it doubles as a very powerful home server that any Techie can appreciate. And who doesn't like bragging about their core count? So that's the conclusion on the comparison and why its better in my opinion, now, here is for my test builds, comprising of 2 main Opteron based servers: Server 1 (high end) CPU: x4 Opteron 6380 System core: Dell Poweredge R815 RAM: 16x2GB DDR3 ECC 1333 Hash Rate: ~2.15 KH/s Wattage: ~635 Watts Cinebench R15 Score: 2723 (raw CPU performance relevant to a home server) Cost: ~$800 Server 2 (budget) CPU: x4 Opteron 6212 System core: Dell Poweredge R815 RAM: 16x2GB DDR3 ECC 1333 Hash Rate: ~1.11 KH/s Wattage: ~540 Watts Cinebench R15 Score: 1486 Cost: ~$535 I originally planned on 3 server builds but hardware issues on server #3 set me back too long ADDITIONAL PARTS REQUIRED: Either run Linux off a USB with no drives, or buy a cheap 2.5" SAS HDD for $5 AND a H200 Perc RAID card(if you don't have one)to hook up a drive and get an operating system installed. I populated all the drive bays on my servers to use them as home servers as well as mining servers (another big perk). Running off USB reduces build cost but you can't use it as a home server. This cost (HDDs) is assumed in my above build costs. I found the big factor in building these servers was the cost of the main system. The cost for RAM and for the motherboard/system is a fixed cost. I found a quad socket Dell Poweredge R815 was the key factor in bringing down your system costs enough to keep it a good purchase. Keep in mind with any GPU setups you also need many power supplies, motherboards with lots of PCI-E slots, lots of PCI-E risers, power cables, ect. When comparing the fixed costs of both systems the Opteron base server is only marginally more expensive unless you building a massive GPU setup, and as discussed before the benefits of resale value and expandability well outweigh a slightly higher fixed hardware cost. Notes for purchasing, buying in bulk can save a ton of money. Buy a single Opteron 6380, its $150. Make an offer to buy 4 at once? You get them for $400 all in. Build 3 servers at once? Cost gets even lower. If we don't include the fixed costs (which even GPU systems have too, which I completely ignore here!), these CPUs walk all over a GPU cluster in my opinion. Eye candy for those who don't like reading numbers: More is better (below) In the above graph we see the clear dominance of these servers in their mining power compared to how much money you spend. The decently efficient 6380 server is even more cost effective than a vega 64, the best mining gpu out there for Cryptonight at current GPU prices. Less is Better (below) In the above graph we clearly see GPUs walk over the servers in efficiency, but that doesn't ignore the fact even the most inefficient server mines profitably (100-300% return), while doubling as a powerful home server which has many other practical uses. There is a clear tradeoff you take with CPU servers, you do lose efficiency, which is a Con, but there are many Pro's as discussed. Notes: Although you can get a lot of Opteron 6100 series cores, they do not support AES, which cripples their mining performance to the point where they are 99% less efficient regardless of their CPU cache or cores. Any 6200 and 6300 series CPUs are good. You're looking for high CPU Cache amount, and as high core clock as you can with your budget and availability of CPUs. I tested 3 different setups for comparison purposes. They have different core amounts and Cache. ALSO NOTE: most of these R815 systems come with old BIOS. You must buy a set of Opteron 6134s for example for $20 shipped in order to boot the system and update the BIOS to 3.2.2 if you want to use something like Opteron 6380s! Make sure you let the system fully reboot. I bricked one of my motherboards because I was rushing (-$130, oops), and you can't just clear the BIOS like a normal gaming motherboard! Comments on Investing in Crypto and mining: I do not discuss profits because of constant market changes. This setup currently mines a large amount of Monero, and Monero is worth pretty little right now (meaning it will likely improve significantly, especially with the recent fork on April 6th). If you were to mine with a single 6380 system you would make like $3-4 a day (profit) and $5-8 in revenue a day of the coin, but if you did this for 3 months, held onto the coins you mined, and then the value spikes and you sell it, you stand to make a LOT more profit than before ($5-15 per day profit) . Part of this is not just the daily profit, but the potential for long-term profit gain and investing. Its very important to keep this in mind. If I mined for 3 months with 3 servers, If the currency doubled in value back up to its previous $400 per Monero, then It would be as if I had made $20+ profit every single day for 3 months. Thats a lot of cash, especially considering if you then resold the servers you would make a pretty penny, maybe even significant profit on the machines themselves on top of the currency mined! EDIT: Just in the weeks i've been refining the post and typed the previous, monero has gone up in value 47% and steadily rising as I had predicted. Some background on me personally, I'm 18, just graduated High School, and looking to start college for computer networking extremely soon. I invested more money than I probably should have researching this and comparing servers. I'm not made of money, and In giving this info for free, I personally incurred a lot of cost, nevermind typing all of this up. If you use this info to your advantage, or build some servers, maybe consider donating some Monero to me as a thanks. If you build servers, then maybe even just mine to my address at this pool for a bit or something instead as a thanks. And let me know if you do! Buying the discussed hardware: I didn't want to do this as I wrote the bulk of this post a few weeks ago, but I'm pretty burnt out working with my servers, and I'm actually selling my servers at very little to no profit on ebay to invest my money into other hobbies. If you'd like to help me do that, contact me on forum about my Opteron 6380 server [sold]or my Opteron 6212 server and I'll sell them to any forum member with an account at least two weeks old at no profit to myself. I believe in the investment and the massive profit potential in 1-2 years but at this time in my life I can't have this much money invested. If you are looking to purchase the hardware discussed above from other sellers, I could point you in the direction of "IT Mart". They have an Ebay page here, and a website here. I have bought from many sellers of used server hardware on ebay, and gotten many bad parts before (which you are entitled to working replacements on ebay, but it costs you time, which is money in mining). Every Item I've purchased from this seller have been great parts with no issues, and they were always super friendly and willing to assist me. Troubleshooting Issues and Questions Chances are if you have questions about any of this (hardware or mining crypto), I can answer it. Ask me, and if you're new to the forum, be a part of the community and join the discussion while you're here, it's always nice seeing other miners on the forum. I'm happy to help anyone if I can.
  15. Hi, I have a old Hp proliant ML115. It has a AMD Opteron 1354 quad core processor clocked at 2.2 GHz, 8gb DDR2 and a 365w power supply. I would like to play mainly overwatch and gta v on this machine as I know PUBG might be a stretch. I have been looking at the msi 1050 low profile but I think the cpu will bottleneck this card quite a bit. I also looked at a 750ti or maybe a amd Radeon 7770. Can anyone give me any recommendations of a graphics card that will be a good paring with this system. Thanks !
  16. I recently came into possession of a Tyan Thunder S2895 K8WE Motherboard from a buddy of mine. Its a dual CPU board with 2 AMD Opteron processors. Although it's an older board, it came with both CPUs, heat sinks, fans, and 16 Gigs of RAM. The chips are Opteron 285s. After testing the board to make sure it powered on, I decided I want to do a retro build. The board does have some options and that's where my questions come in. I do a lot of game building, 3D rendering, and creation. Primarily I use CryEngine and do a lot of work with 3DS Max, Maya, Mudbox, World Machine, PhotoShop, ect. I also do video editing. I know I'll be running an SLI setup, probably a pair of 1050s, an SSD for the OS (Win 7), and a RAID 3 setup. I want to add USB 3.0 and SATA III capability per PCI adapter cards. The board has SCSI and although I'm not familiar with it I am trying to learn what I can. One question I have is am i better using SCSI rather then RAID 3? I want to use RAID to stripe the drives for the speed and have some backup options, even if its with an external USB drive for a backup. Will I get the same speed using SCSI drives instead? I see most people using SCSI are using smaller (75 - 100 GB) high speed (10 - 15k rpm) drives. I'm having a hard time trying to find out the difference between SCSI drives and regular HDD in a RAID configuration. Do you think I'm better off using RAID or SCSI in order to get the speed that multiple drives in RAID 3 offers? The CPU and GPU intensive programs i want to run on an SSD with the operating system. Should I just run it on a single SSD, RAID 3 with mechanical HDDs, or a SCSi configuration? I want to add a PCI adapter card that will give me USB 3.0 which I will use for a backup external drive, and SATA III for the SSD and RAID. The board has 2 RAID controllers, but will I see a noticeable difference using the newer SATA III ports from the adapter card? I included the PDF manual for the motherboard so you guys can see all the specs. I'm also wondering what slots should be used for which adapter cards. There's the 2 PCIe x16 slots for SLI (prob be running single slot cards because there's a 32 bit PCI slot between them). Then there's 2 PCI X slots @ 100Mhz, and one PCI X slot at the bottom @ 133 Mhz. Next question, which of these slots should be used if adding 1 USB 3.0 adapter card and 1 SATA 3 adapter card. Obviously if I run dual slot GPUs (GTX 1050) I'll only have the 2 bottom slots open. Another question, I've read that the BIOS can only support up to Win 7 which doesn't bother me, but I'll lose Direct X 12 functionality, so how much of an impact would that have running a PCIe 3.0 card in a PCIe 2.0 slot? Should i just go with a 2.0 DX11 card(s)? If i go the SCSI route that will open up a slot so i can run a sound card that I have (Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-FI). That would give me 7.1 Digital surround vs the integrated analog codec on the board. I'm also considering running RAID on 2 SSDs instead of 3 HDD depending on the cost and performance difference. i'm looking forward to this build as i like projects like this. I hope that I what I am asking i was able to make clear enough in this post rather then just confusing you guys, but please dont hesitate to ask. Any info you guys can offer will be greatly appreciated. looking forward to your opinions. Thanks!! So to clarify: #1. Is a RAID configuration faster in SCSI or SATA II? and what are the pros / cons ? #2. Is it worth upgrading to SATA III speed wise and can it be achieved in PCI X slots? #3. Wanting to stripe across 3 mechanical hard drives in RAID 3, for the speed advantage, is it better to just use 2 SSDs instead? #4. Can the latest PCIe 3.0 cards be used in this board even though its limited to Win 7 w/ DX 11? #5 Which slots would you put which adapter cards in? 17. I did something similar Linus did.I took an old server, threw in a 570 Gainward GS and made a decent gaming PC...well, I thought it was decent. Here's what happened. Some local shop was selling old server parts, and dad and I decided it's time to upgrade our now vintage c2d rig. At first, we got an MSI 9661 with two 6-core Opterons clocked at 2GHz (I don't remember the exact model). In Cinabench, it scored 600 points, not bad. But things quickly went out of hand. The heatsinks were crap and the CPUs easily reached 105C before shutting down. And, no matter what I did...used different fans, dug in the BIOS, used loads of different software etc. I couldn't get the fans to speed up. AND I noticed that my USB devices were failing. Turns out it fired all, yes ALL of my USB devices. It even damaged my phone so I can't copy any files via USB now. I sent the MB back, and got the same MSI 9661 MB, this time with two quad-core Opterons at 2.1 GHz. Things were going well...I still wasn't able to make the fans spin up, but we've put some bad-ass heatsinks which kept the CPUs under 60-65C even when maxed out for 60 minutes. Rest of the components were 32 GB of DDR2 ECC ram (66? MHz) and a GTX 570 Gainward GS, 512 GB WDB HDD. Things were going well for 2 months. Since it was winter, that thing put out so much heat into my room I didn't need heating. Really! But... But... Things went bad soon. The PC would just freeze up and hang, forcing me to reset it by holding the power button. Long story short, the MOBO was making a contact with the case, making a short, and freezing the system. Anyways I took the MOBO out, and put it on my table. I took all the bits I need from the case, like front audio and USB (THIS MOBO HAD NO AUDIO JACK AT THE BACK!) Even theh, when I turn on the PC, when it was counting the RAM, it would just freeze. I had to restart it 2-5 times till I got it running. Solution? I never turned it off. Really! I turned it off every 10ish days, just to give it a brake. After that, it became more and more unstable. It would also just randomly slow down, despite the temps being well withing reason. It would also freeze when I plug in a USB device. Then it would..."unfreeze" when I unplug it. Sometimes, it didn't do that...with the same USB device and port. So i just got pissed and sent the whole thing back. Cable managment was also a bit of a pain, since the connectors were in awkward places. Performance? It performed well...mostly. It literary slowed down with time. It was especially noticeable in Sony Vegas. I reinstalled Windows a few times. No viruses. But it did game well, tho. In Crysis 3, Full HD on low settings, I got 55-65 FPS and 45 on medium... And I did reorient the fans from that picture and video. I even made a video about it. (Sorry for the rough cut, I have no idea what happened with Vegas that day.) ►►►https://youtu.be/WT6TfkzMURQ server.mp4
  18. The title basically gives away the question. What is a better all-around server processor?
  19. I thinking of moving to AMD Opteron for my home server. See my signature for my current Xeon build. I currently run FreeNAS OS. I do a lot of streaming to multiple devices and run virtual machines. I think I could benefit from having more cores vs my current quad core Xeon E3-1226v3. I think a 12 core Opteron 6344 or 6348 would serve my needs well. Or wait until the new Opterons come out based on 16nm (i think). Your thoughts?
  20. My brother has an HP xw9400 with dual Opteron 2222 processors in it. I know it's not the fastest, but he is wondering if he can upgrade the CPUs to either Opteron 2393SE or 2435. My concern here is motherboard support. They're all F socket processors, but are there any chipset differences or is it a matter of changing firmware/bios? I got the potential CPU options from the product manual pdf that was on HP's website (http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/getpdf.aspx/c04140689.pdf?ver=31). My question to you guys is: Do you know if these processors are interchangeable? Thank you very much!
  21. Is NZXT Phantom https://www.nzxt.com/products/phantom-white compatible with x4 noctua nh-u12do and this supermicro case http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron6000/SR56x0/H8QGL-iF_.cfm ? Also i will be using standard ATX PSU and modding the case (drilling extra holes for the mobo, cutting a hole in the tray where the motherboard sits so that all 4 cpus can be installed etc, so i just need to know will it physically fit). Thanks in advance!
  22. I very recently bought an HP Proliant DL165 off ebay for 200$. Quick specs before I begin: Dual Opteron 6172 12 Cores, 24 cores total (2.1GHz base, with no turbo support) 48GB of ECC ram Quad Gb NICs It works great (amazing deal btw), though its single/few core performance is sub-par (as you would expect with an old, low-clocked opteron). I plan to use it mostly for virtualization, with 2 to 4 cores per VM. Within the VMs, the performance is a bit underwhelming as things stand. I was wondering how much of an upgrade switching to dual Opteron 6276's would be (dual 16 core based on bulldozer platform, 2.3GHz base and 3.2GHz turbo), as the upgrade would be relatively cheap.
  23. Hello LTT forums! I've run into a bit of a dilemma. I recently acquired a server machine from a friend, who got it god knows where. I opened it up expecting to gut the system just to have something to do. Inside there was 64 GB of RAM (8x8GB), the most I've ever worked with. I looked it up online, and the sell prices for 8GB PC2-5200 RAM sticks were astronomical. At this point, I figured that the system was more powerful than I thought. I lifted the CPU covers (two of them), and under each was an AMD Opteron 8439 SE hex core processor. Once again, these are the largest processors I've ever worked with. I checked the online prices for the processors. Each 8439 was going for over a grand. I checked some other sites. 2.5 and 3 grand, respectively. As much as I'd love to have 3-6 grand, how do I know if it's legit? Can anyone help me evaluate why on earth the prices are so high? http://www.rakuten.com/prod/amd-opteron-hexa-core-8439-se-2-8ghz-processor-upgrade-2-8ghz-4800mhz/212695629.html?listingId=327254235&sclid=pla_google_SynergyDataInc&adid=29963&gclid=CM-M54XymcYCFQeBaQodQjwBXQ http://starmicroinc.net/amd-opteron-8439-se-2-80ghz-6mb-l3-server-oem-cpu-os8439yds6dgn/?gclid=CKG6i_6cmsYCFQipaQode5cC0Q http://www.esaitech.com/amd-os8439yds6dgn-six-core-opteron-8439-se-2-20ghz-2200mhz-socket-1207-cpu.html?pk_campaign=ga-pla&gclid=CISDhKedmsYCFQipaQode5cC0Q http://www.pcconnection.com/product/amd-processor-opteron-6c-8439-se-2.8ghz-6mb-l3-cache-tray/os8439yds6dgn/10100208 Thanks!
  24. I have an ASUS KCMA-D8 board that was purchased back in 2011 that used to be for a lowly file server back in the day with only one socket filled. I'm looking to re-purpose it into an light video encoding station and a programming/VM station with some 6-core opteron 4180s. Problem is the board has C32 socket mounting and the backplate is not removable from what I remember. I'm having the hardest time finding decent water blocks that would be compatible. So far I've found: EK Supremacy on Amazon Koolance on frozencpu And that's about it. The Koolance block appears to need additional backplates that I can't find anywhere, and the EK block is... well... made by EK. Short of making my own mounting rings for a newer/already owned CPU block, I think I'm out of luck, Any ideas?
