Hardware: ASROCK Z370 EXTREME 4 TP LINK TX201 [2.5Gbps] Software: openmediavault_7.0-32-amd64 Unified Remote [paid] Hi, as per title i'm gonna ask for wol from shutdown, i red a bunch of guides that affirm you can wol from shutdown but i'm only able to do it from hibernate and sleep. Is there somethign specific to do to enable wol from shutdown? Also, if someone know a better option to wol and shutdown/sleep remotely with a phone instead of unified remote i will be interested.

Started playing around with an old PC and made it into NAS/PLEX server using OMV5. So, I wanted to move some stuff from PC1 to OMV5 via ethernet cable. Powered both off, connected them together and powered on. Something happened and now the ethernet port on PC1 seems borked - it doesn't show that any internet is connected (no blinking light, no ethernet connection shows up on the network/internet settings). I checked in the Bios and it's recognizing the ethernet there, but states nothing is connected in it. I've re-installed the drivers and it looks ok in device manager. It's not the cable / router as when connected to a laptop it works fine. At this point I'm unsure what to try. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, I can't get NFS to work on my ODROID HC4 with OpenMediaVault setup running on Armbian Buster. VLC on my Android phone just says this: I got a tip to use NFS on Linux - Kodi running on LibreElec and my phone ...and SMB with my laptop running Win10. Is this setup fine or should I be concern about any issues that may come from using different operating systems? Thank you

Hey, this is my first post, so I´m already sorry upfront if I´m doing anything horribly wrong. I read all the community standards and hope to be at the right place - if not, feel free to guide me. I´m an absolut noob regarding forums. Build: I´m using my first gaming computer, built in 2014. Sadly my GTX 760 died after installing Windows 10 and I´ve literally tried everything to make it work, but nah. Code 43 - seems dead or at least not worth the 80 bucks that it´s worth on the used market here. Fortunately, I built the system with an i7. So currently it can run on the onboard-graphics. CPU: i7 4790 RAM: 8 GB DDR3 BOOT-DRIVE: 64 GB SanDisk Flash-Thumbdrive with OpenMediaVault installed on it DATA-DRIVE: Currently only one Samsung QVO SSD 1 TB - it was laying around here and as I got frustrated while fixing my GPU, the NAS idea came up yep, a NAS with one drive - laugh about it. i would probably as well - but yea, as i said, i was really frustrated ^^ and my backups are currently on my running systems and on external hard drives. just waiting for black friday to come around for some deals mb POWER SUPPLY: 500W - is it even possible to put a newer GPU into it? I want to run my game library from OMV. But I am getting a Error "Access is denied (0x5)". User has full access and admin has full access to the NAS location. Direct X can install no problem, but when I go to start any game Error. OMV-Extras is installed Proxmox kernel is installed RAID-Z1 (ZFS) is being used

I need help deciding which NAS solution is the most fitting given my requirements. I am leaning towards going TrueNAS Scale, but would appreciate any input to avoid pulling my, already not so thick, hair. Want to avoid hours of setting things up to just get into a "well, !@#$" moment. In short: I want a server that's going to act as a backup for all important data and simple storage for everything else. I want to run Folding@home while the server is running. I want to share/play media via Jellyfin/Plex (this is not important, as I can always run files directly from the shared folders) My needs/requirements: - Server not running 24/7 - Wake-on-LAN or on power resume - Possibly Debian-based - Being able to install and run any regular software that's available for the OS, including: web server, docker images, Folding@home, Jellyfin (optional) - Being able to access from external network (Internet) - Application on Windows to automatically sync certain folders - Application on Android to automatically sync certain folders / file types My current hardware: - Intel Celeron G3900 (ARK page) - ASUS H110I PLUS (ITX) - Patriot Signature, 8 GB (2x4), 2133MHz, CL15 (PSD48G2133K) - Patriot Burst Elite 120 GB SSD (bought "recently", not a part of initial setup) - WD Blue 2 TB 3,5" HDD (WD20EZRZ) x2 - be quiet! Pure Power 11 400W 80 Plus Gold - Cooler Master ELITE 110 (yeah, it's tight in there :D) - Qoltec Monolith UPS 1200VA 720W (it has USB, but I don't think I can monitor power loss on linux with it) After buying the HW (back in 2019 :P), I was playing with OpenMediaVault. Some things were easy, some were a bit...not easy. Back then I had no knowledge of docker and how to properly setup everything, so I ended up with a system on the HDD which made every single thing both slow and noisy (though it gave a feel of the past with HDDs clicking all the time ). Some time ago I tried to revive the project by installing fresh copy on the newly acquired SSD to act as system drive. Went quite ok, but had issues with how to properly setup the shares, etc. Clearly my fault of just not digging enough. Result: initial setup done, but without full synchronization, so it started to get dust again. Now I want to do things "properly", set it and let it do its job. Given my requirements and previous struggles, should I stick to the OMV or should I switch to TrueNAS? I like the low-levelness of OMV, but at this point I don't know if I want to troubleshoot every issue. TrueNAS seems a bit more easy to use, while still allowing lots of flexibility. Would go with Scale and not Core as I have zero knowledge of FreeBSD (plus it seems to be a bit more restrictive), and the fact that Scale is based on Debian. Two HDDs of 2TB that I have currently is not much, but I don't have that much data yet. Later I can add one or two to expand the pool. Thinking of going RAID1/RAIDZ1 first, then upgrading to higher capacity, then upgrading to RAID5/RAID6/RAIDZ2. The end goal will probably coincide with a platform change to support more than 4 disks, so I can have disks setup like: 1/2 boot (is system mirroring any good?), 4 backup (crucial stuff), 2 storage (non-crucial stuff). To use my server as a backup, I want to have an automatic synchronization running from both Windows and Android devices that I own. What's the easiest way to achieve that? Syncthing? Nextcloud? I think both are supported on both systems, so is it just a matter of preference? The one thing I really need is to just be able for my Android phone to hook up and upload any new stuff to the server, possibly even over the Internet. I have a static IP from my ISP, so would like to make use of it. Since access to both servers is mostly web-based, this should be just a matter of port forwarding, right? Any caveats here? I know the security risk of exposing the machine and won't make it public initially, but would like to do so eventually, once I am certain I can make it 99.9999% safe. TrueNAS supports 2FA, so I think that should be enough. How about OMV? Is there a way to setup either of those as write only so I can dump my files but not be able to read them? (FTP comes to mind) To wake the machine, since I don't want it to run 24/7, I would love to use Wake-on-LAN. Is that easily configurable or rather a pain in the bottom parts? Secondary solution would be to have it connected through a smart plug and just fire it from the phone app. Would need to figure out how to turn it on from the Internet though - any suggestions that are not costly are greatly appreciated. One crucial thing I want to use the server for is F@H. I am thinking about buying used card, maybe the GTX 10 series, and lowering its power to not stress the PSU. Would I be able to do so on either of NAS systems? Can(/Should) I use nvidia-smi for that and will it "just work"? I am not the master using terminal, but can handle simple things, including managing services and using cron. Is THIS guide good for setup on TrueNAS Scale? Anyone have it running on their servers? Recently my friend asked me to built his company a "portable" ARM-based NAS, he explained that his team need NAS rather than portable drive since they need to do work collab on their Adobe suite and other multimedia program with temporary project storage, he's need it to be portable because his team usually work on shared office space and coffee shop (He doesn't want to use finished off the shelf product). His basic requirement listed down below: Support up to 4 client access wired and support wireless mode (for quick preview on their phone and ipads), 2.5GBe networking for wired and atleast AC WiFi for wireless (need to have dedicated router for security purpose). Has UPS battery backup atleast for 1 hour with all services still running. The system need to be low powered (65W or lower) and support PD power input (He's planning to use 100W PD charger for this). Atleast 10TB of storage with good IO Speed (he told me atleast need to be 1.5-2GB/s ish R/W raw disk pool speed). Optional disk encryption and ofcourse, since it's portable, need to somehow safe for frequent transport. He willingly spend up to $1.5k for the project (he understand that this is custom system solution). His team already have several 5/10GBe USB/Thunderbolt NIC and used it regularly on their laptops/macbooks for accesing their primary NAS at the office (which also I built), so using 2.5GBe solution is a must for them. My current plan for the system is: Using RK3588 based device such as Radxa Rock 5B with 8GB of RAM (Thx to fully exposed full PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe slot and secondary M.2 E key slot running at PCIe 2.0 x1, and also have 2.5 NIC built in). Running the OS on 32GB eMMC. Dual NVMe drive connected to ASMedia ASM2812 PCIe bifurcation card (plugged to M.2 NVMe via riser). Using USB HDD or Dedicated low power HBA (HBA connected to M.2 E key at PCIe 2.0 x1, I think that enough for handling 4 HDD bandwidth) Using 2x 64GB Intel Optane M10 as SSD cache. Using 4x 4TB HDD on RAID-Z1 config. Dedicated Router with NanoPi R5C as base, 1st 2.5GBe NIC connected to NAS, 2nd 2.5GBe NIC connected to network switch, Mediatek RTL8812AU USB WiFi + Realtek Gbit USB NIC + Fibocom L860 4G modem for WAN connection Dedicated AC/AX WiFi Access Point (ill think the option for this later on). Now, I have several question to ask: I planned to use OMV (OpenMediaVault) on Debian since neither Unraid or TrueNAS have ARM compability, does OMV provide stable provide for basic NAS purpose? how good are their ZFS plugin? Or any other OS recommendation? Does Linux BCache (Block Cache) play well on ARM devies, especially when used in conjunction with OMV? Any other suggestion to use SSD as L2 Cache if BCache is bad? Does any 2.5 inch external USB HDD support SMART monitoring on Linux + OMV? Like WD My passport / Seagate expansion drive? or any specific SATA3 to USB 3.0 IC/Chip that support both UASP and SMART monitoring? if USB not an option, any recommendation for low power SATA HBA that easy to compile/have native support on ARM kernel? I planned to use ASMedia ASM1064 based card. Is built in realtek NIC on both NAS and router are OK for this type of system configuration? A few months back I picked up an HP Proliant ML110 G7 server to run OMV but I never managed to get it running. Specs: HP Proliant ML110 G7 - Xeon E3-1220@3.10GHz 16GB ECC 2x 300GB SAS & x2 250GB SATA = 1.1TB 8-Port Gigabit Unmanaged Switch - Netgear ProSafe GS108 v3 TP-Link TL-WDR7300 AC2100 router I plan on upgrading its capacity as I get more drives. I have a 3x 3TB and a 6TB I can shuck. I would like to run a NAS with a few 8TB drives but that is for a later day and an operational NAS. I tried for a few days but this system really like booting into its Proliant OS. I tried installing OMV from a USB and from a DVD to a USB drive plugged into the internal port. When I could get it to install it would look like everything was perfect, but on Boot it would go back to its OS. I have been struggling to get this set up. I installed from a USB thumb drive to a second thumb drive plugged into the motherboard. I removed all the hard drives and the optical drive during installation. The installation said it was successful. After installation is said to restart and I was hit with a Grub error. Attempting Boot From USB DriveKey (C:) Error: attempt to read or write outside of disk ‘hd0’ . Entering rescue mode … Grub rescue> Is this an issue related to installing USB to USB? I tried read some thread on this issue but didn't understand how they resolved the issue. Is this system suitable for an OMV or should I sell it and try again with Synology or QNAP? Similar systems have sold on eBay for around £100 This is what I'm working with

Could it be that my issue with my nas powering on randomly is caused by my psu? I have a "new" board, and it is still powering on when it tell the system to shutdown. Both OMV and Xpenology is having the same problem so it can't be an OS. Thoughts? Also, it seems that when I turn off the power by pci/pcie (aka WOL) it doesn't turn on. WTF? Is this an asus issue? I hope someone can help me. My homemade NAS is running OMV and it turns on automatically after I shut it down. The Power by PCIE setting is on (needed for the WOL to work) and I am trying to figure out what keeps sending the packets for it to turn back on. I have swapped motherboards and it does the same thing. Is there anyway I can monitor or see what is sending packets for my NAS to boot back on without warning? FYI, it turns on right after I shut it down, I can physically hold the power button and turn the machine off and it will automatically turn back on.

I was able to get to my folders on my OMV file server (I was having a 24 hours brain fart). I saw multiple folders that I did not create on OMV. Where did they come from and how can I get rid of them? The ones I created were Backups and TimeMachine fyi.

I am having such a problem with his fracking issue. I go into my Network and click on my new file server. I double click to get in. I am asked for a username and password. No issues. Until I get to the second screen where it is asking for a password only. How can I get through this? I have been struggling with this all day.

First post! Over they years, I have become quite fond of using the RaspberyyPi line for hobby/projects. Recently, I have deployed a basic home NAS/backup/seedbox using OpenMediaVault 3.x and hit multiple performance ceilings with this setup. Obviously, network speeds can only go so far and even with a gigabit network adapter, we saturate at USB 2.0. Even with the 64bit CPU, OMV images and other debian-based rPi capable distros run 32bit. Even when 64bit distros become the norm for ARM, the CPU can't handle much. Attempts to run Plex have been mixed; if the client has the codecs built in, it runs so-so. If not, it poops the bed. As an experiment, I popped Debian 8 and OMV 3.X onto an older MacBook Pro 13in. (Gen2 i5) I had in my backup stash. This CPU was able to handle a single stream without a hiccup, but kicked CPU usage to 96% - second stream was a bit laggy, third really started causing problems. So, from this I learned Plex transcoding at 720p+ is going to be pretty resource heavy depending on the files. I can either transcode anything I get elsewhere to play nicer or I need better hardware. Additionally, I began to feel I wanted more overhead on a home server to run other applications like a secure personal cloud as well as have a decent enough footprint to start teaching myself some new skills. My current hobbies/interest are pushing me towards media editing so I am going to need at the very least a slightly faster storage solution that my desktop and backing up to a rPi NAS but I am also interested in learning more about virtualization, testing, scripting, deployment - dev. ops/admin/QA professionally. My research has been all over the map; from taking a look at various mobile/IoT dev boards (with better i/o like gbit eth and sata) to the intel NUC line and Dell mini-servers. I've also been looking at various "pro-sumer" grade desktop hardware RAID boxes. The NUC line has some decent options but for the kind of work I want to do and based on what I saw with Plex on an i5, anything less than a Skull-Canyon NUC would not likely handle the kind of multi-tasking I am looking to do with a home server. At the SC NUC price-point, I might as well pay a little more for actual server hardware so this led me to the Supermicro SuperServer E200-8D. I'm pretty confident that box with 32gb of server ECC RAM and an intel m.2 nvme SSD would work nicely with a desktop e-sata raidbox. You could easily snake a e-sata>sata cable to the sata headers in the case and pop thru one of the removable back port covers. In the future, if the board survives, this system could be rack-mounted and used with a larger format raid array later and is compatible with a PCI riser/bracket for expansion. That said, a system like this could also be used to learn how to offload rendering work to another system, but I have been catching some references to some video work actually benefiting from a server having a GPU? Way cart before the horse. Alternatively, I could go Skull Canyon i7 NUC and also have a pretty capable HTPC setup as well. And, now I am rambling. Really just looking to spur discussion about this hardware. I am quite a long ways from purchasing anything any time soon, but I do want to learn as much as possible. I think a more powerful/secure home server/lab for myself and the work my partner does wouldn't be a bad investment.

Hi all, im new to the forum but have been watching linus for a long time, i recently set up a new server running open media vault and have set up a few dockers using tutorials provided by 'Techno Dad Life' but i hve recently come accross a new docker i want to set up called emulationstation but i can not find anything on the internet in regards to setting up the docker and accessing it on the network. Would anybody please be able to help me with this please? i would be very grateful. p.s. to any mods, if this is in the wrong place i do apologise but i did not no where else to put it.

I'm building a storage + media server for home use with max 3 users/connections. 1 for backup storage 2 plex apps (only local) i don't plan runing any vms or many dockers, maybe bitorrent for offsite backup, thats it. sadly my media is all over the board, got some backups of uhd bds and lots of backups of vhs (well not a backup, tape+sun). I want to run plex on it so i have the r5 2400g in my near final selection. r5 2400g because, -old ati fanboy -am4 (i hope am4 will be around when 1151v2 is forgotten) -possible ecc (atm the selected board (~60$) dosn't support ecc but maybe a later one no ecc (atm) -> price. I can buy one part each month, best case. case is FANTEC SRC-2080X07 with a cheap 2x6GB/s sas hba so now is my question, for which OS should i go? unraid+plex, +did read will work - I can't afford a huge Parity drive so it is likely i have to upgrade it down the road (sounds totaly easy). - I can't change the raid beyond 2nd parity drive freenas+plex. +didn't read much but i think there is a working jail, -got no ecc, -1tb~1GB ram isn't possible atm (money >.<). openmediavault+plex sounds so far most likley to be what i need btw. i read plex supports hw transcoding only on intel or amd+windows, is it correct? i think bittorrent is possible for all 3, any better experience ? ---- Please don't point me to a pre build nas, some guys got guns, toy railroads or old coins. I will have a Server next to me it's a hobby and i like it but now i'm at a point if i don't ask it will only hurt me later

Hey, I wanted to get some recommendations on NAS Software for the following hardware: • Intel Xeon X3430 2.4GHz - https://ark.intel.com/products/42927/Intel-Xeon-Processor-X3430-8M-Cache-2_40-GHz • Intel Board S3420GPLC - https://ark.intel.com/products/46533/Intel-Server-Board-S3420GPLC • 16GB DDR3 1333MHz (Not sure yet which, most probably not ECC as I don't have the budget for it) • 5 x 1TB Drives I don't really have the budget for new stuff, and I can get the board + CPU for super cheap - ~$162 I currently have a FreeNAS 9.3 Box, but it's an old Pentium and it's just being used for file storage and pretty much nothing else. I really want FreeNAS 11 at this point because it has built in Bhyve VM support, which means I can virtualize my other Ubuntu Server box that I use for Home Automation amongst other things. I am just not sure if this old Xeon (LGA 1156) is strong enough for FreeNAS with ZFS + VM's. If you know of any other NAS Software that can handle VM's, that'd be cool. Otherwise, I was thinking of maybe doing Proxmox, and running 2 VM's, Ubuntu Server + Whatever NAS OS. Thoughts? Cheers

My NAS is currently set up with openmediavault (http://www.openmediavault.org/) and everythings been fine, but lately I've been thinking about how I'd like to be able to tinker with the machine but I'm not comfortable enough with debian to be able to tinker without the constant fear of losing all my data. An example of this tinkering is I'd like to try out owncloud to see if I like it, and if not I'd like to be able to remove it easily. When I tried this with OMV in the past it screwed something up and it took so much googling to figure out what the actual problem was, let alone how to fix it I currently use the NAS for the following: - file server. It hosts SMB shares being accessed by 2 windows desktops and 2 mac laptops - private vs public shares (ie some shares have access restricted to only certain users) - plex media server - couch potato server - sickbeard server - all the home computers backup to the NAS via FTP - connects to a VPN as a client - also acts as VPN server for when the home laptops are away - the nicest thing about OMV is that it provides a web interface to handle settings of all these different plugins that I've listed Anyway, I've been thinking about just installing windows 8.1 or something on the NAS instead and running that in place of OMV. Can anyone provide some insight into why you would/wouldn't use windows 8 over omv/debian for a home NAS? What are the pros and cons? How comfortably will windows handle what omv currently handles? Yes, I know there are other options like amahi, freeNAS etc. that allow you to click and install plugins from a web interface, but again if I want to go deeper than that I'd still have the same problem as with OMV as they are all linux based Ultimately I'd like to get some of my sanity back and not have to worry about screwing something up on the NAS that I wouldn't know how to fix (at least without sinking a load of time into googling a solution), but I wouldn't make the switch to Windows if there are some valid reasons to stick with linux for this use case
