  1. So I have an old HP computer that I'm tinkering with and upgrading, mostly just for fun. It's the HP Pavilion p7-1027c if that's useful info at all. It came with an i3-2100 cpu, and I wanted to upgrade that to an i7-2600k. I got a used one from ebay and installed it. Upon booting, I got the unsupported cpu installed error. From what I read before buying it, these two cpus use the same socket, that being LGA1155. I'm not very knowledgeable about this stuff, but I can think of a few possible issues. Being an HP computer, it may have a weird motherboard that specifically limits the upgradability of certain components. I know Dell and HP are kind of notorious for that. It may also be a power issue, but I highly doubt it because I've already swapped the stock psu with a 500w 80 plus unit. It may also have been an error on my part with the installation of the new cpu. It's the first time I've actually removed and replaced a cpu, and I know it's not one of the more difficult parts of pc building, but maybe I screwed something up. Anyway, does anyone know what the issue likely is, and if there may be a way I can solve it and still use the i7 in this pc? If not, oh well. I'm not out much. But improving my processing power would be nice.
  2. Hello! I got an old Windows 7 pc (the HP Pavilion p7-1027c, specifically), and I'm using it as a sort of practice rig to tinker with and try to upgrade. I bought a GTX 680 for it from ebay, because from what I've read the 600 series was the last generation to naturally run on legacy bios systems. I seated it and booted the pc, and it came right on with the weird aspect ratio thing that one would expect with a new gpu that hasn't had its drivers installed yet. So, I'm assuming the card works. Anyway, when I try to install the drivers for this card, I get this error: "the procedure entry point setdefaultdlldirectories could not be located kernel32.dll" I'm unable to install the driver, and I get the same error when I try to install and open Geforce Experience. Does anyone have any ideas that can help me? Again, this is all a learning experience for me so I'm not super tech savvy. Please explain things in layman's terms if possible lol. My searches so far have led me to attempt a Windows update, which the pc does not want to do on its own. I found a link to manually install a security update from 2018 which should have updated the file version of my kernel32.dll file, but it didn't. Please help. Thanks, y'all!
  3. That hardware hasn't aged like the vehicles used in either sig OG: Later updated with some scores..
  4. Hi All I was just watching the LTT Labs videos and i know Linus wants the LTT Labs to kill userbench mark so it got me wondering if the Labs will be going back to test older CPUs and GPUs with newer CPUs and GPUs. Would the Labs team be testing a 40 series GPU with an older CPU like 6 or 7th gen Intel or even older. I could see as graphics has gotten better that someone would choose to upgrade there graphics card but not there CPU or even have a lower end CPU but have a higher end GPU in comparison. Personally i enjoy when LTT play with older tech or find a new use for an older tech device to extend its life span. Just don't get scammed this time if they have to buy older CPUs and GPUs from ebay like Linus did with the Xeon CPUs a few years ago.
  5. I have a Samsung Series 5 Ultrabook from 2012 that... - Has no HDD. Repurposed then sold. - ... because it has broken SATA ribbon connector which I somehow accidentally cut with scissors, don't ask how; I don't know either. - Malfunctioning keyboard - Damaged 30-pin ribbon connector, which prevents the laptop from powering on. + RAM still in there because it's soldered. + Otherwise works perfectly fine! + Wrapped in cling wrap so insects won't invade it anymore. I also have an old Acer Aspire from around 2009 that... - Has no HDD. Repurposed and sold. - So slow that I'd be surprised if Linux Mint Xfce runs on it. - Has yellowed plastic! - And yellowed display! - Has its battery missing. + RAM still in there because quite frankly I don't know who'd want it. + Otherwise works "perfectly" fine! + Also wrapped in cling wrap for the same reason. And a Lenovo Thinkpad from around 2011 that... - Is 32-bit so I can't use it for certain programs. - Does not pass POST 70% of the time because of a malfunctioning CPU fan. - I think has a virus in it somewhere - Is not wrapped in cling wrap :(( +Still has HDD and RAM still in it. +Works perfectly fine if it's in the mood. + I like the mouse nub thing Are these still worth repurposing? If so, how should I go about it?
  6. My gaming rig specs are, in my honest and unfortunately somewhat bias opinion, respectable. A Ryzen 3700X paired with a G.SKILL TridentZ 16GB 3200 kit in dual channel and accompanied by a EVGA 2070 Super on an ASRock x370 Taichi Motherboard. It plays the games I like (single player titles) at a smooth enough framerate at my preferred resolution (1920x1080). I do have a plan in the works to move up to a 5000 series (or should I just wait for 6000 at this point? Anyway) when they are more readily available with a mobo and ram upgrade to boot for some casual streaming. But then again I don't feel any real NEED to upgrade this machine. It works fine when I power it on to play some games. This is not, however, my daily driver. It hasn't been for more than a month. Which, when I finally realized this a few days ago, came as a bit of a shock to me. I am currently typing this from my thrown-together linux box from parts I had in the closet from previous builds. An AMD FX-8320 "Eight" core processor, Two kits of Corsair 8GB for a total of 16GB using up all four slots (unsure of the speed). This is on an ASUS Sabertooth 990FX mobo and topped off with an Gigabyte R9 280X. This is, by all specs, a vastly inferior system to my gaming rig yet I am finding myself preferring it. Now I don't want to turn this into a Linux Vs Windows debate. I like Windows 10. I am not a linux advocate proclaiming that you need to dump 'windoze' right now and boot up the current popular linux distro. Hell, as a long time linux user I would advise against doing just that. Linux takes a good long while to get the hang of and no one should ever do a cold switch IMO (besides most of the popular distros are garbage *coughcoughUBUNTUcough*). Windows 10 is still my first choice for gaming and I doubt that will change anytime soon. No, I am writing this more out of my surprise at just how well this system is running. This system is just shy of a decade old, most of the parts being bought in the first quarter of 2012 (besides the graphics card). But as far as basic desktop use goes (browsing, writing, watching videos) and can not detect a difference between this system and my gaming rig in responsiveness. Hell, the added graphical eyecandy seems to give this system a smoother feel to it than the obviously faster gaming rig. I know that if I slapped windows on this machine (or linux on the other) and ran comparable benchmarks, this system would handedly lose and by a severe margin. But with its ultra-quick boot (power on to desktop in less that five seconds) and snappy desktop, I feel as if I don't care. Anyone else out there with old-hardware daily drivers that get more use than your top-of-the-line gaming rigs? Share your specs!
  7. I've been thinking of alternatives to buying retro hardware on eBay since many times it's overpriced and coming from some Chinese seller with an 80% rating and won't arrive within the next three or so months. Basically, I don't want to overpay for some product that I can't play around with for 3 months, only to find out the I2 Quad I ordered is some I2 Duo with the BIOS reflashed to report something different. I came up with the idea of approaching electronics recycling centers and asking to take some stuff off their hands / buy them for a reasonable price. I'm wondering if this is a possibility or whether it's even practical to do so as many components are dead by the time they arrive. If it works, it helps save some e-waste and allows me to enjoy some old hardware. Thoughts? Suggestions on where else to look?
  8. Okay so I keep hearing similar answers so I'm hoping some new eyes on the situation other than my own and my buddies will help. The short of it is after streaming for a few minutes the audio stops working and just makes clicks or audio spikes every couple of seconds. It does this on 3 different recording softwares. First thing to recognize is I know this system is outdated. It's a hand-me-down to my buddy. Second, this worked for months and only recently stopped. System information: AMD FX 8350 4.0 ghz Wraith cooler Msi 970a-g43 plus Asus radeon HD7770 2gb 250gb sandisk ssd 750w thermaltake psu To reiterate, I used this computer with a rx480 for streaming without a cap card and for recording and it worked fine. I swapped out my old hd7770 when I gave it to him because he got a cap card and wanted to stream smash. He successfully used it for months and it started having this issue. Many people have said the system can't handle it but it recorded fine for years and months with the current hardware. The unit records fine but after a range of 30 seconds to 5 minutes the audio starts spiking. I've swapped the graphics card back to the 480 to see if it was the card and it worked fine. We replaced the cap card (elgato hd60+.) The hardware isn't maxing out it's barely at 40%. I've tried reinstalling my drivers but not fully uninstalling like I saw on a video. We've tried changing hard drives minimizing settings. And a number of other things. I was hoping someone else has had this issue or maybe give me some ideas. I'm constantly trouble shooting because my buddy doesn't have much computer knowledge and my knowledge is just building the old computer and my new one. With watching linus and a few others over the years. I feel like I'm letting my friend down so any help would be great. Thanks in advance If you're asking for logs and stuff some light instructions would help as I'm not very knowledgeable on how to get those.
  9. So i have a 2 TB HHD. This drive has been in use for the last 3-4 years. I can not remember if i had important documents on it anymore. Is there a good way i could get all files in a list then sort them by type so i could do that one at a time?
  10. Windows 11 has generated a lot of buzz, but not all of it has been positive. Many people think they’ll be left behind, but is that really true? Windows 11: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/windows-11 UUPDump: https://uupdump.net/
  11. any of you guys can help me i am planning on making a hackintosh build mainly for music production but on my old spare pc at home i just want to know what could be the problems that i might encounter on doing the hack also want to make sure if the hack would work or not. Here are my specs i5 2400 Acer Veriton S6610g 12Gb Ddr3 1333mhz Ram Gtx 660
  12. I have an old Sony VIAO PCV-RS710G I would like to get working. I installed an old hard drive I had and attempted to install Ubuntu on it. The problem is when I insert the DVD into the DVD drive and I get to the installation menu up after I select an option I just get a blinking white line forever. I tried taking the drive out putting it in a known good PC and installing Ubuntu from there and that was successful. I then put everything back in the Sony and tried to boot from the hard drive out of curiosity, and it booted into the GNU GRUB environment where I can select from a few boot options. If I try to boot into Memtest86+ it boots into that fine and runs fine, but if I boot into Ubuntu I get the same infinite blinking white line. Out of curiosity I tried to install windows 10 from a DVD and got the same damn blinking white line forever. 0 idea what's wrong, I have swapped out all the RAM< the GPU, and removed all the ad in cards.
  13. This is more of a pissy vent then anything else but some help would be appreciated if anyone has any suggestions. At home we had a wireless HP Envy 4500 that, used to, print fine when plugged directly into a computer but never worked wirelessly. My setup is on the other side of the house so I really wanted the wireless functionality and decided to set up an old computer as a print server. I troubleshooted plenty of problems with this computer and finally got Ubuntu on it and set it up as a print server. I pulled a document up on my main Maci to print annddd the printer just didn't dispense any ink onto the page. I troubleshooted this thing for days and got punted from robot to robot when contacting HP support so I just threw my hands up and replaced it with an old LaserJet p2055dn someone threw out. This printer works fine but after setting it up in the living room the computer functioning as the print server has decided it will no longer connect to the internet and I can't get it to work now. I'm very frustrated as I've never used a printer that didn't suck and at every single point something could go wrong while setting up this print server it did. Also in the time it took me to scream a bunch and wright this the computer magically fixed itself. Also when I rebooted the machine the screen did this crap. I should probably specify that I'd like some advice on how I could get the old printer to work again so I can give it to somebody and it doesn't just go on a landfill and why on Earth I was having the problems I was having, I'm clueless. Budget (including currency): Rp. 4.000.000 - Rp. 5.000.000 (about 285.90 USD - 357.37 USD) Country: Indonesia Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: genshin impact and some other RPG games like trails series, and wird and powerpoint stuff Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): so.... i'm having a dilemma between buying old hardware with HP Prodesk 600 g1 intel i5-4590, 8 Gb ddr3 and just adding some gtx 750 ti/1030 it costs around Rp. 4.400.000-ish or buying a newer hardware with Ryzen 3 3200g using the integrated Vega 8 , 8gb ddr4 it cost just a bit more , Rp. 4.410.000 i haven't considered any monitor yet maybe fps wise, the older hardware may win because the added dedicated GPU. but the newer hardware gives more flexibility with future upgrades so.... what do you think? older hardware or newer hardware
  15. Hi! My name is giuspepy and im searching a way to fix this mobo for a year now. Thanks to some really nice people we managed to narrow the problem down. The problem was the mobo would not post and make a series of 6 beeps the motherboard is a ga-8ipxdr-e this is quite a old board. I buyed it for exeperiments and see how dual cpus work. The actual problem is the 6 beep code means that the keyboard controller dosent work whatever its probably replaceble. Whats blocking me from desoldering it and replacing it is that i cant find it. The board being old and the fact that the ics are also old means documentation is probably been lost in time. I have basic soldering skills and also a multimeter. I could really use some advice with this. I tried finding it with connections between the ps2 port and the chips with the multimeter in "short mode" but all that they had in common was gnd wich isent of much help. Here are the photos of the mobo and chips that are near the ps2 port. Any help or tips on the procedure to take to find the problem would be a lot for me. Ps: i dident yet desolder anything. I used the soldering iron in the background for desoldering old capacitors from another board lol.
  16. Hi guys, like any other quarentine day, I had nothing to do, so I decided to dig up some stuff inside my room, and throw away some trash, when I stumbled into some old PC parts. (pictures will be provided). I have always been interested in old pc games and computers, so I saw this as an opportunity to build a pc for dos games (Instead of using a VM or DosBox). My idea is to try and find the missing parts to build the computer and install Win98 SE. I've powered the board once (nothing exploded or catched on fire), but I didn't get a post (probably because I don't have RAM or a buzzer to bip the error code). The hardware I found is the following: - P2XBL REV.D1 Motherboard - Intel Pentium II (B80523P350512E) 350MHz I think - PCI modem card with a PCtel PCT789T-A chip - S3 Trio 3D AGP365 4MB - ISA Sound Blaster Compatible Card with a 82C933 I want to know what you guys think. Should I build it, or just keep this stored in a box for the rest of my life? I can't upload everything because of the 20 MB limit, sorry!
  17. Recently, a friend asked me whether I could give them an old computer. I decided to fix up one of the old, crappy towers my father still had in his companies basement with more RAM and a passable CPU. The Motherboard takes DDR3 RAM, and the manual states, that the Board has an AM3 Socket, which all makes sense. When tacking of the cooler, I, however, found the Socket to be marked as AM2. To my knowledge, there never where any AM2 Boards with DDR3 Memory Support. Did any of you ever see something similar? Is there any actual layout difference between AM2 and AM3? If No, might this just be some kind of cost saving measure on an OEM Board that was never meant to be seen by a consumer? Anyway, I found this kind of interesting. I hope you did too.
  18. So.. I got the PC tower out earlier that was doing nothing more than sitting in the cupboard collecting dust and decided to give it a poke about. Turns out I got this old hardware from the year 2000 and before; a Pentium 3 (800MHz) with a fan-less heat sink, 256MB of Infineon PC100 memory, a dead (rip) 10MB hard drive, a floppy drive and a CD drive. I was wondering what on earth I'm supposed to do with this considering it ain't really useful. Perhaps LTT would be interested in making a video on it? If that's the case I'd be happy to discuss with them regarding getting the parts over to them (keeping in mind I'm in the UK)
  19. as title states, where i live parts are expensive and electricity is terrible.. due to a power surge (had a protector) my desktop did the big "spark" and the electricity company refuses to cover the cost (which is a legal requirement) as far as i know the parts that work is my noctua cooler, fans, MAYBE ssd+hdds but dont have a way to test...basically whole thing is gone. remember when pricing shot up in the us/canada and everyone freaked out? those are my normal prices but kinda worse here.... well anyways i managed to over pay for a temporary laptop a hp pavilion g7 1227dx. ----CPU/apu: AMD A4-3300M ----Ram: 4gb 700mhz ddr3 ----Apu graphics: 6480g, 512mb ram (1600x900) basically worthless in terms of gaming, BUT ive been without a gaming machine since 2018, so i've been playing some bauldurs gate and that's about all it can handle that i found. anyone have suggestions of some games that could possibly run on this thing? to think i could have bought a rtx 2060 for the price i paid for this laptop (gotta love import taxes and a poor economy, south america) prior to moving to south america and what i brought over, was an: ivy bridge 3770k, powercolor 7990, 32gbs of ram, my ssd, and 3 backup hdds for keeping work 3d files (yes, i lost that job too, graph paper didnt cut it). but anyways any game suggestions would be nice, would love to be playing some path of exile (favorite game) but this doesn't even launch the login screen.. so any and all game suggestions are much appreciated.
  20. Hey there. Got an old Asus Eee PC Netbook (pretty sure the model is 1001PX-BBK301, not 100% positive though) that I want to squeeze some more life from before replacing it. Do you guys have any recommendations for distros that would be right for older and/or slower hardware? I know there are some other Ubuntu flavors geared towards old hardware, but I'm not experienced with them enough to know which may be the right choice for me. Inside is an Intel Atom N450, 2GB of DDR2, and a 160GB HDD. Thanks!
  21. So my point should be pretty obvious. I've not been able to find a good source of old hardware in/around germany. I always see people posting amazing deals they found on newegg and such, but yeah. None in germany. Does anybody have some input?
  22. I have a WinFast motherboard I acquired 6 years ago and s probably at least 5+ years older than that which will no longer POST. Processor sitting in it is and AMD Sempron, bought lightly used, like new, and is completely compatible with the mb, so should be no issue there. I've tried a few tricks from videos and forums that have not worked, including clearing CMOS and shorting the BIOS chip. All to no avail. The fan runs and the cpu gets hot in a reasonable amount of time. No apparent signs of moisture damage (warping or rust) or anything to go on to show why it shouldn't work. It's an older motherboard, but it's been very useful to me, and I would love to revive it if at all possible. Or at the least learn what's keeping it from working.
  23. I have currently have 3 old GPU's laying around, and I have no use for them. I'd try selling them but I honestly don't know who would be interested in them and I don't even know what they're worth. I also have a bunch of old hardware laying around, so I could put together a couple computers but I really don't know what I would use them for. The GPU's are: - Nvidia Quadro FX 3800 (x2) - Nvidia Quadro 4000 Both FX cards do okay, but the 4000 is very loud and overheats pretty much just sitting idle. Is there anything I could use these for, or are they worth any money? Or should I just scrap them?
  24. I'm working on a box to netplay melee on (dolphin isn't that demanding on gpus, the highest speed of a single core of the cpu matters more since it only uses 1 core for the actual emulation) but i still want to be able to use a crt so that it feels like playing on the console. Can someone recommend the most recent 2 cards that still have analog signals through them?(svideo and or vga/dvi)
  25. Hey there! I am in the market for a cheap budget option for upgrading the basis of my computer. (CPU, Mobo, RAM) I currently have: 1. AMD Athlon X4 880k (Surprisingly a very nifty processor) 2. The A Chipset motherboard 3. 8Gb DDR3 Memory. I have resorted to Ryzen 3 1200 as my very first option. I don't have much hands on experience with the 300 chipset motherboards and which ones perform at a low price. I have found cheap DDR4 memory locally for $25 (Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x4 Gb). I have figured this would better set myself up in the future since rumor has it that most motherboard companies will continue releasing bios updates to support the new Zen 2 processors. Leave any comments down below and suggestions. Thanks!
