Friend gave me his old Galax GeForce GTX 960 and I have now made it my life mission to get it working on my ancient Dell Precision T3500 just for the funny. It fits-ish and I have to push it up a bit to fit the DisplayPort cable in, however it only spins to life every second boot and has no display output? Even when I use the old GPU, Windows won't boot if the new GPU is installed. PC Specs: Intel Xeon 3500 Series CPU 10GB of DDR3 RAM (it used to have 12GB but one of the slots exploded ) Windows 7 Professional 64bit WD Black 1TB 7200RPM HDD (SATA 3GBPS) If you have any advice, please let me know

Specs: [Over 6 years old:] MSI P67A-GD65 B3 Intel 2600 14GB DDR3 RAM (1333mhz) 1TB Seagate HDD [+- 2 years old:] AMD RX570 4GB (Gigabyte Gaming OC) Antec 850W Bronze PSU 256GB Kingston SSD What's wrong? This morning, I switched on my computer and opened a game. While loading the game, the computer suddenly froze and would not respond at all. After hard-resetting it, Windows loaded up fine and I proceeded to open the same game. This time, shortly after the game's opening scenes finished, the computer completely reset on its own. It now refuses to show the BIOS and info screens and doesn't boot Windows. I don't think it's the GPU (which might seem like the culprit) as I can't even see any signs of the pc booting Windows 10 - lights on the mouse should come on, for example. The GPU is also only 2 years old and never overclocked past stock. I have had multiple crashes to desktop and Memory Management BSOD the last few months - even during work hours (programming). What I've tried: - Booting with each RAM stick, one at a time, in different slots - Removing the GPU - Removing the TP-Link Wi-Fi card that I installed yesterday (hhmmm?) - Making sure everything is plugged in properly Additional info: - Temps were never a problem - 60 °C on the CPU and 70 °C on the GPU. I have a Deepcool Frostwin V2 air cooler. - Windows 10, latest updates; BIOS was updated Q3 2018 when I bought the GPU.

Hello, i was just thinking about posting my rig and asking to help with a "potential" bottleneck, but then changed my mind and thought, that ill document the transformation of my old pc into a new one, this will be my first build so im kinda psyched. Ive been researching pc buildong and what parts to use for over a week now. On the picture, is my current pc, its a HP xw4600 Workstation, specs: CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E8400 3.00GHz RAM: 2x2Gb 667mHz ddr2 ram i've no clue what kind of motherboard GPU: Gigabyte geforce gtx 1050ti 4gb 7GHz Storage: 1Tb HDD and a 250Gb SSD Optic drive: DVD-ROM Power unit: 475W that's about all the info i can gatger up for you. I've tried upgrading ram in the past unsuccesfully. Now, the new components: MB: ASUS TUF B450M-PLUS GAMING CPU: AMD ryzen 5 3600 RAM: hyperx 2x8Gb 3200MHz cl15 case: Zalman Z1 Neo PS: 550W Fatal1ty (already owned but without additional cables) the GPU amd storage will be the same as my current pc. i went with the board mainly because 6 sata ports, and ive got some spare hdds id like to add here. I also have veeeery big eyes for those M.2 NVMe SSD's ive recently learned exist. The cost of the stuff i wanna buy is 470€, but im buying a bit more stuff. Sorry for writing for so long, mainly wanted to make ya'll laugh with my old 2008 pc with a modern GPU, maybe ask if my shopping list is good or not. Thank you for attention. Best regards, Slendy

Hey everyone, In 2012, I bought a hp pc. After 4 years now, the hard drive slowed down massively and the pc is very slow because of this. The CPU, motherboard, case, memory, etc. is still working perfectly fine. Because I only use this pc as a secondary machine, I don't want to buy a new one or use the parts for a new build. Instead, I just want to replace the hard drive with a new one or upgrade to an SSD. I am a noob when it comes to software, and I don't know how to clone the drive and then change the drive. The specs of my old HDD: SATA, 500 GB, rot.: 7200rpm Which hdd or ssd do I buy for the best result (involving connectors), and how do I transfer my data from my old hdd no my new one? (without having problems with Windows booting up) If someone would provide me a step by step guide or could help me in any way, that would be appreciated! Thanks a lot!

I found an IBM Personal System/2 Model 50 (8550), monitor as well, so I decided to connect it all together and see if it ran, but all it shows is a blue screen on start-up. Does anyone have any clue how to fix this? Any help is appreciated, thank you.

This is my current build (See attached), I did change out the motherboard for a gigabyte one. I would list the specs of the new motherboard but I am currently deployed in Afghanistan. I am wondering if it's worth upgrading anything on here or starting a new build? The games I play are typically, BF1, LoL, WoW, PUBG, Civ, Starcraft, Diablo, Doom, etc. I have been looking at customizing an Alienware Aurora...worth it? Any help or advice is appreciated and I thank you in advance. -Jordon

troubleshooting GPU keeps crashing for no apparent reason
Ndwolfy780 posted a topic in Graphics Cards
So I'm trying to fix up my neighbors old computer that keeps crashing out of the blue. The second you try to do anything other then sit at the desktop it's only a matter of seconds before the screen goes black, and the blue screen of death comes up. His rig, if you could call it that, is an old Intel Celeron G390 on an ASRock H110M-DGS with 4GB of RAM running a GeForce GT 220. I've narrowed down the issue to the graphics card as using integrated graphics and a spare GPU things ran fine all be it slow(er). The BIOS and the drivers are all up to date, when it crashes the thing isn't even hot. It's never even gotten above 50° C. Unfortunately I can't increase the voltage beyond what it already gets as the motherboard simple doesn't have that feature. And he can't afford to get a new GPU even the cheaper ones as the little guy is still in primary school (Elementary).- 10 replies

So I built my current computer about 7 years ago using the parts listed. This computer has been great and served me very well, however it has recently begun to show its age (especially after installing Windows 10). At the time of the build I had more disposable income and less bills (half as many kids too). Now as the head of a household of 6 money has become much tighter. I don't really like getting pre-built computers as you don't have near as much control and knowledge of exactly whats in the system, however coming up with around $1,000 to build a new system that would match the performance level (at it's time of build) and longevity that the current one has provided is proving difficult. Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 + SB 950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS CPU: AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core 4.0 GHz (4.2 GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W FD8350FRHKBOX Desktop Processor RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B Video Card: PNY VCGGTX660TXPB G-SYNC Support GeForce GTX 660 Ti 2GB 192-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Storage: Seagate BarraCuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive Powersupply: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 650W ATX12V/EPS12V 80 PLUS BRONZE So here is the discussion/question I pose. Is this rig still worth upgrading, and if so with which components?Or would it be in my best interests to begin a new build and start saving my money and buying piece by piece a new rig? This is the system I have started to look at building, though nothing is set in stone and I am definitely open to suggestions. OK so I got this computer from my cousin which he has had for a while. He had 2 1080ti's in his newer build but got 2 new 2080ti's. He gave me the 2 1080ti's along with this computer. When I check the specs I can already tell that I am not using the graphic cards towards its full potential, And I just would like to know what I should do to improve it. I am thinking of getting a new CPU along with more RAM. But other than that I don't know what else I should do. My knowledge of computers is mediocre, I have built one before but I would not consider myself as one to know a lot about computers. All I know is that I am not using this computer to its full potential and I would like your guy's opinion on what I should do to make it better. Here is its specs Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 Cpu 975 @3.33ghz Installed RAM: 8.00 Gb Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti x2 Motherboard: P6X58D PREMIUM If there is any other things that is needed for this info just ask and Ill prob see it and reply! Thank you sincerely M

Hello. So I recently got an old desktop from someone I know because he had gotten a new computer. He said that the gpu had given up. (It worked perfectly when I tried it) So now I'm sitting here with a pretty powerful system that I have no idea what to do with. Specs: Cpu: AMD 8350 Gpu: RX 290 Ram: 16GB Psu: 650W. Cooling: Noctua D-15, think it's their flagship model. No harddrive. First of all, i struggled to get this machine to post. The bios wouldn't initiate or anything. Turns out that the motherboard didn't like to have a harddrive connected. Tried updating the bios, the bios didn't update. Swapped from 32gb ram to 16gb, put in a freshly formated drive and a Windows installation stick, managed to install Windows and I got it to boot. Great. It's working So now. What do I use it for? Had some ideas, I have a pretty awesome Ethernet connection in my apparentment (1Gb/s!), so I thought I'd run a few game servers on it. That would use the 8350. But I would still have an R9 290 just sitting there doing nothing. Could I use it for mining? Or would that make too much noise? 290s get loud, no fun in having a vacuum cleaner on for 24/7. And would mining with a 290 even gain me anything? Another thought would be to use it as an HTCP, but I would still want to run servers, having a noisy system on in my livingroom/bedroom wouldn't be very nice. Lastly, I thought I'd use it as a mix-up of NAS, game server and server for other random projects, but again, then I would have a 290 doing absolutely nothing. Any other ideas? Thoughts on how I can utilize the GPU? Is there any gain from selling it?

Um... I have an old MacBook Pro (5,1) (A1286), Intel C2Duo (2.66 GHz), 4 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, GeForce 9400M, 9600GT. Since MacOS got super slow, I installed Ubuntu and have been using it (owing to familiarity from my previous school's smartboard). I have been browsing for Linux distros, and really liked Elementary OS. But I have minimal experience in Linux distro installations... So, does it do driver installation automatically (like ubuntu?). Also, I read it's also debian based like Ubuntu, so all the Ubuntu terminal commands will work, right? (Y'know, like sudo apt install tuxpaint etc.) Please help! Tagging @GabenJr as I admire his work in Linux videos!

So I was walking around downtown and I saw a computer that was in pretty rough shape and even had vines starting to grown on it. I decided to take it back home and discovered that the computer was from a company called Ameri Comp, inc. I tried searching the brand up online and to my surprise I could not find any info on it. The computer turns on and none on the usb ports work but it takes me to a screen that tells me some info on it. Hopefully the pictures will help.

Hey guys, I want to revive a fairly old pc. Specs are: Asus Vintage barebone case AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+ Some Asus socket 940 am2 mainboard (maybe an amd 690g chipset? - was sold by asus as a barebone system back then and has no model name or number on it) 4gb (2x2gb) of Kingston 600mhz ddr2 ram Some Asus branded psu with 350w 80gb WD branded hdd evga geforce 9400 gt 512mb ide type dvd rw cd drive I wanted to install Windows 7 on this machine but when I tried to boot from a boot disk the screen just went black. Black not like in no monitor input but as in just nothing happening. cd drive led was working. So I waited, but as nothing had happened after 5 minutes I shut the system down. By repeating it I run into the same situation over and over again. How can I make this work? What I tried so far: Checking the hardware (cpu, ram, hdd and gpu were tested in other systems) Manually selecting the cd drive as the boot source Checking the BIOS settings - everything seems to be all right, but I dont know my way around ide devices and their configuration...

i own an dimension 3100 dell computer, i want to transform this into a server. as far as hardware goes i really dont want to break the bank when it comes to buying new materials, i need more ram i want a sufficient amount i was thinking 8 Gigs? will the single core 3 ghz processor be enough? as far as hard drive space goes i will be upgrading it in the near future, should i wipe the hard drive im currently using to use freenas? i dont use it at all so its ok to do so. i will mainly be using this as a gaming server (minecraft) in the beginning but as i get more hdds ill will want to store music and videos on it and to be able to access it remotely, like from my phone and laptop for example. is all this possible using freenas? im looking for input on what kind of ram i should buy, is this even possible, tutorials on how to do this kind of thing. thanks

I am looking to repurpose a few old computers that I have lying around at home, and was wondering which setup would work best. My mom has this old HP PC currently. All she does is some basic browsing (saving and viewing of images, social media). Even after a good dusting of the internals, some software cleanup, and a few runs at the 'ol disk defrag, it's still running pretty slow for her. It's currently housing an Intel Core 2400S (quad core) processor clocked at 2.4 GHz and 6GB of dual-channel RAM. Rather than buying a whole new computer, I want to buy her a new RAM kit and processor. The processor socket needs to be LGA 1155, and the RAM needs to be a kit of dual-channel 8GB (2x4GB) DDR 3 RAM. What are your hardware suggestions for the kind of browsing she's doing?
