Seemingly the issue is that he linked to the official AutoCAD website in the description of his tutorial on installing the software legally on MacOS. What the actual heck?

Summary The Plextor lineup of SSDs, which are formerly Lite-On now owned by Kioxia is being rebranded to SSSTC (Solid State Storage Technology Corporation). Kioxia seems to be moving out of the consumer market and towards the Datacenter and enterprise markets. Quotes My thoughts I don't believe this to be good a good rebrand for Kioxia. Nostalgia factor aside, Plextor doesn't have much brand recongition nowdays. ( I personally don't know what much about Plextor). But it still has alot more brand recongition then the mouthful that is SSSTC. Sources Techpowerup PS: haven't done one of the these before please tell me how I did.

Summary Valve has announced the winners of The 2023 Steam Awards that left people more shocked than anything. Quotes My thoughts I'm guessing not a lot of people participate in the voting so a popular streamer decided to skew the votes to be funny. RDR2 receiving Labor of Love despite no updates in almost 3 years. Hogwarts Legacy which ran awfully on a Steam deck winning the Best Game on Steam Deck award. Most egregiously a game with Mostly Negative feedback, Starfield, winning most innovative gameplay. A game plagued, in my opinion, by 2010 Bethesda game design that has not evolved since. People on reddit were quite upset over these awards. Summary Via a video uploaded on the 1st of January 2024 at 4pm UTC, precisely a decade after his first upload at 4pm UTC on the 1st of January 2014, Tom Scott has announced that he is stepping back from his YouTube channel indefinitely. This marks the end of a 10-year, one-video-per-week streak for his channel. He will still be producing his newsletter and podcast, but the main channel will no longer be updated (unless Tom sporadically decides to). Tom Scott has made videos on various topics from Computer Science, to linguistics, to random experiments and skits, to (more recently) interesting places, feats of engineering, and projects. He has probably been one of the platform's longest and most consistent content creators, and now he's decided that a decade is enough; he kept up the channel uninterrupted for 10 years, and that's a nice point to end on. Quotes My thoughts Tom Scott is one of the OG YouTube creators. I have been following him from when the website looked very different, through university and into working, and now all good things must come to an end. I personally think it is good to see someone go "this is making me happy, but I'd also like to relax" and bow out after 10 years of improving their video and production skills, and highlighting a bunch of different, odd, fun, and interesting projects and ideas to people who might never otherwise have heard of them. Tom Scott will be missed, for sure, but better to end on a high note / slightly too soon, than burn out, crash, and/or start something bigger, which he explicitly said he doesn't want to do. Reading through the comments, it is clear that he has had an impact on many well-known creators as well: electroboom, vlogbrothers, slo-mo guys, Gamer's Nexus, Jay Foreman, SmarterEveryDay, AbroadInJapan, Alan Walker, TEDEd, blenderguru, HowToDad, and many other well-known youtubers have left their comments saying thank you and goodbye. Summary German media publishing giant Axel Springer SE and OpenAI announced a partnership to quote: "deepen beneficial use of AI in journalism" There are plans to have ChatGPT link and reference News Articles of Axel Springer properties like the German Welt-Newspaper, the tabloid Bild Newspaper, but also major international news publications like Politico, Upday (cooperation with Samsung) and Business Insider. The agreement also explicitly states that ChatGPT will be trained with content from Axel Springers publications. Publications by Axel Springer have been criticized for major political bias, fake news, sensationalism and political influence. 36% of Axel Springer SE belongs to controversial Investment Company KKR, one of the biggest investors into fossil fuels worldwide. Quotes My thoughts As a German, hearing this news made every possible Alarm Bell in my head ring. Axel Springer is a main source of polarization in Germany. Publications by Axel Springer received 41% of all condemnations by the German Press Council in 2023 (30 in total, Bild alone 26). Last year, there was a major controversy about CEO Mathias Döpfner. Private Messages by him were leaked that contained statements like: If ChatGPT starts getting trained with content produced by Axel Springer properties, especially opinion pieces, ChatGPT will turn into a mass spreader of questionable journalism. Many German Twitter/X Users reacted in shock underneath the Announcement by OpenAI. Summary In a post published on Nintendo's social media accounts, online services for the Wii U games Splatoon 1 and Mario Kart 8 will return on the 3rd of August at 1am UTC. This follows a 5 month downtime for both games, and the fact that some legacy Nintendo WFC logon servers for some CoD games have gone down 9 years after WFC's discontinuation. The updated version numbers are 2.12.1 and 4.2.0 respectively. Quotes My thoughts I really find this story interesting with the fact that Nintendo took practically 8 months to sort this out, when other affected games on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS were fixed last year. I feel like this update may be bigger than we think though, I've encountered people hacking in Mario Kart 8 before and there's a few YouTube channels (not sure if I'm allowed to mention them) that have a quite a few short clips of hackers in Splatoon 1, perhaps those issues could be patched? Summary These Small libraries have been popping up all over the place in recent years. it has been a chance for people to either set up their own place where they can put old books in hopes someone will take them and read them and they have become great places for people to donate new and old books. There is a novelty for kids to see a little house of books while on a walk and be able to talk one to read at bed time. Matthew Reed is hoping that his version of these Small Libraries will allow people of all ages to remember their childhood of renting movies and introduce the concept to younger generations who might have missed out on those rental stores. Reed calls it Free Blockbuster, and he's not the only one as a this is the third in Canada, these boxes work in a similar fashion to the Small Library houses in that they are places where people can donate old movies or take them to watch at home, Reed even gives out his own membership cards as well. This Grade 12 Project is sure to be a successful one. Quotes My thoughts This is a story from my old High School and I remembered it after listening to the WAN clip about the Wayback machine and Libraries being in trouble, I think that its a really cool concept that is very much inspired by those small libraries that are mentioned in the podcast, it very much seems like the natural evolution, and I can even say that I have visited the box and can confirm that at least for the first few weeks Reed was also stocking the box with Popcorn so you could get a movie for movie night and the snacks too! Summary AMD Radeon RX 6700 & RX 6600 XT Also Getting 12 GB GDDR6 Models As Spotted In EEC Listing, RX 6700 XT Gaming OC Listed For Over 700 Euros Quotes My thoughts I think it's to be expected that more "lower end" models are to come. I'm just happy seeing those leaks as it "confirms" that the more budget friendly people are waiting for a good reason. Availability should be horrible, as the trend goes, but it should be less hard to produce as they are just a cut down die. I'm hoping that AMD has been keeping all of the chips that didn't make the cut for the high end models, to have more cards at launch. I also don't think the price for the pre-order is right, it's just a blank price that company puts in the DB until they put the official pricing, just like Linus explained a few times on WAN shows. Summary After threats of Google seeking to prevent search operations in Australia, and largely backing down after signing agreements with Australian Media Business, Facebook has decided to suspend the posting and sharing of News Articles and Information from the Pages of Australian Media and other sources. ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), Nine and Fairfax, News Corp and others have had their posts removed from the platform. Other pages such as Australian Bureau of Meteorology (weather provider), Comedy News shows and satirical news pages have also been affected. Questions remain for Emergency Services Providers. Communications between the Government and Facebook are ongoing... Quotes My thoughts They are a private company, and can choose to play how they like to. There is a question about media literacy and people's lack of finding alternative sources. Maybe it's just convenient. The are also questions whether this code was mostly put in due to the current conservative government having an ear-shot of larger, right leaning media companies (i.e.: News Corp), whom own Sky News Australia and a majority of Australia's Tabloid Newspapers. Many of the news providers use post taken from Facebook's platform to whip up spin and hysteria in major news cycles, and people either buy it, or it further disillusions them from the content. Just look elsewhere.... Why give in to Daddy Murdoch or Facebook? They both don't care about what they host on their platforms. AMD hides its claim that 4GB of VRAM is ‘not enough’ just as it launches a 4GB GPU
Guest posted a topic in Tech News
Summary An AMD blog post about the 5500XT in which it claims 4GB of VRAM is, "evidently not enough for todays games," has vanished from the AMD website, the same day the 4GB 6500XT launches. Below are screenshots of the post taken by Dominic Moass from Kitguru, before and after the launch of the 6500XT, respectively. The blogpost is now public again, but as of writing, AMD has not responded to The Verge's request for comment. Quotes In marketing for the new card, AMD now says: My thoughts Situations like this happen too often where companies contradict what was previously said, sometimes even hiding it. The first example that comes to mind is Facebook's promise Oculus users would never need a Facebook account. Edit: forgot to add that the post mentions the symptoms/problems with gaming with too little VRAM as: Error Messages and Warning Limits Lower Framerates Gameplay Stutter and Texture Pop-in Issues All of which were mentioned in the LTT review of the 6500XT. Summary After the controversy with Gamers Nexus it seems there is more to the story. UFD Tech has just released a video explaining the sad behaviour and poor management. Even has had contact with Steve at GN. My thoughts It is sad to see companies treating others this way. For a company to treat another HUMAN BEING this way is unacceptable. I hope that anyone who is being offered a sponsor spot with this company really thinks twice before going ahead. It's good to see Steve support UFD Tech and help get awareness out there to keep others safe and expose the unacceptable acts. As always, please research before making decisions on contracts with any company offering a sponsor deal. Sources https://youtu.be/-c_rKnK-uAM

My thoughts If this is true, it feels like a huge betrayal to gamers. Like, yes, I understand gaming is only one of the reasons Nvidia makes GPUs, but I feel confident in saying that they probably make up a larger quantity of customers. It just feels like Nvidia doesn't care and just wants money, which, I know, they're a business, but still. Is it worth it if they lose millions of other customers in the process? It feels like the chip shortage has been exaggerated and the GPU price hike is at least partially artificial. Hi All, I was wondering what everyone's best websites are for tech news? I have been a long time reader of Techspot, I like they have hardware unboxed benchmarks etc, however the more and more I read the news there as well as related comments (probably a bad thing to do) the more I realise that there regular commenters/ readers? Are well in my opinion just full on conspiracy theorists of some of the worst kind I read on the interest - I will admit I dont go looking so they are probably not that bad but I read comments from time to time on FB, Twitter, BBC and Youtube and non of them seem anywhere near as bad. Obviously this is just the readers/commenters but the more I read the articles the more I see opinions edging this way popping into what I want to be factual reporting. So basically, if I decide to move to another website is there anywhere you would recommend. Thanks PS. I know you should look at multiple sources in reality but I'm not quoting these stories or acting on any news so im not too bothered about this as I would just dig deeper if I felt required

Summary STORMOUS ransomware group claims to have breached Epic Games, the creator of the Unreal Engine and Fortnite. Quotes My thoughts Another massive data breach in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine. The Stormous group has been quoted to be in support of Russia in other online articles adding to the narrative that this attack is in response to such events. At this time Epic Games has not acknowledged the breach. Sources https://twitter.com/darktracer_int/status/1501662062438612992

Hey all, Great WAN show as always, I normally listen to it when doing building work, it's relaxing! I heard the thing about the inflatable motorcycle jacket, it is quite a strange thing to attempt a subscription model on. In Europe (I'm in the UK), we've had inflatable jackets for around 10-15 years, costing between $600-1000. They have not been 'smart devices', all that happens is that a pull cord is attached to the bike and rider. When the rider is ejected, the jacket inflates via a can of compressed air (bit bigger than a coke can). If the jacket is not damaged, you can buy a new can of air for $10-20 and carry on using the jacket. Only from my experience, the key areas that need protecting are: head, neck, spine and pelvis. The jacket will prevent severe internal injuries as well as protecting the spine. The really good ones inflate UP under the helmet to prevent unhealthy head movement. If you're wondering what happens when a car pulls out in front of you when you're doing 50-60mph, here it is (3 years to recover, before I was able to ride again): What a pelvis can do to a metal petrol tank when going from 50-60mph to 0mph My current moped

Today “SauceNao”, a popular reverse image search engine to find the name of an anime or manga from a single panel, called out Canadian child services. The Twitter account tweeted that it caught Canadian child protect on multiple occasions uploading pedophilia material on its services to search for it. The service has disabled cached static content but since CCP is using a bot to upload those images as temp material to be looked for and finding those images on the database of the service itself. The bot the CCP is using seems to be based on AWS, which would mean these pedophile materials are on Amazon’s servers as well, even if only cached. This could be a dangerous play for AWS as holding any pedophilia material is illegal in almost every country. The CCP has not yet responded to either emails or Twitter. Summary Canadian child services using reverse images websites to find pedophilia content by uploading the materials itself on to other servers. Quotes My thoughts Deleting this because the forum members rather focus on my own take than the issue being that the Canadian Child Protect has been caught spreading pedophilia material using a poorly coded bot.. Summary With the launch of the Galaxy S21 series, Samsung has made the decision to remove MST support for the US lineup, and to remove the microSD card expansion slot. In doing so, Samsung Pay will no longer work at payment terminals that don't support NFC, removing one of its biggest strengths against competitors such as Google Pay and Apple Pay. Additionally, users now must choose how much storage they want in their phones at time of purchase. This can go up to 256gb for the base and plus models, and 512gb for the ultra model. Quotes My thoughts Personally, really annoyed by this move. Both of these are features that I utilize(d) on my current phone, the S20 Ultra. With this, plus the removal back at the end of 2020 of the Rewards program for Samsung Pay, strongly discourage me from getting a Galaxy device during my next upgrade cycle. MST and the microSD were two features that made the Galaxy lineup very appealing - now Samsung seems to be pulling a Galaxy S6 instead. The seller isn't absolutely certain of the exact model, but it could be the Ryzen 7 5700G or Ryzen 7 5750G. Summary The VESA industry group seems to have decided that response times and ghosting need a standardized spec, similar to how it standardized HDR specs a few years back. The result is "ClearMR" (site link: https://www.clearmr.org), which aims to provide a simple single bullet list item to give a general expectation of a monitor's speed and clarity. Quotes My thoughts I always appreciated how RTings and BlurBusters stepped in to provide 3rd party oversight, but it would be really fantastic to have certified information regarding display clarity on the box from the get-go. It really shows how far display tech has come as well -- the fact that the industry is willing to do this also shows that they feel the need for another price differentiator, because who cares about refresh rates when your options are between insanity like 360hz vs 400hz? The downside, of course, is that these badges may be used as a way to create artificial "halo" products and increase prices. But I suppose that was going to happen anyway... On a final note, the Ars article is really great, especially the sections showing the test images. Really neat stuff, and even if marketing is driving, its clear that some serious tech chops are getting put into this under the hood: Sources https://www.clearmr.org/ https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/08/vesas-latest-standard-grades-displays-on-motion-blur/
