Hello everyone, I'm brand new to building a DIY NAS and I'm unsure which OS is best for my needs. That's why I'm asking you. I have an old spare PC and I want to use it to stream media on my own network. Currently, I have a 2TB HDD and a 120GB SSD boot drive installed. In the future, I'd like to add 4x 8TB drives so I can stream movies, series, and music. To keep electricity costs down, I want to shut down my NAS when it's not in use. I'll need Plex for streaming since I use a Samsung TV. Which OS should I use for this purpose?

I see all other wifis in the area and i can connect to them and use them but this specific one that i got does bot show. Can anybody pls help ive tried everything doesn't work though. I did uninstall the wireless bandwidth driver from device manager and restart and then it shows but after a bit it disappears again and then i cannot see my network again. ive tried resetting my laptop and reinstalling windows ive tried resetting network settings tried resetting tcp/ip tried resetting everything even ran command prompt as administrator and there were some netsh related commands i ran but still nothing the issue is still there. I really need help. i have even updated windows network drivers as well as the windows software itself its up to date. I appreciate any help more than happy to try.

Hey guys, I hope everyone is keeping well and my apologies if I've placed this into the incorrect thread. Quick question, I've an older HP 2810-23G J9021A switch in my home network cabinet. However, the fans are quite noisy so installed a couple of resisters on the switches fan headers. My question and idea is, would I be able to install an internal toggle switch to the switches internal fan circuit, that would allow me to switch between "full speed" and "half speed"? I was simply going to cut the fans cable, connecting the 12v lead to pin 1 on the toggle switch, with outputs; pin 2 12v to 12v (full speed) & pin 3 12v to a resistor cable (half speed). While leaving both the GND & yellow signal cable the same. I just don't know how the switch would react with the added switch or if their might be any negative effects? Many thanks in advance!

Hello LTT, I am new here and english isnt my first language so bear with me here. I am currently doing a project in Network research on how to identify and implement a secure network in a small/medium corporate environment, in this project I want to outline various types of Networks, their Equipment, Media and Topologies As well as, newly introduced networking technology, security, and Routing protocols. if you guys have any good sources from where I could procure all of this information, I would be much obliged. -Jax

I've been getting this error when I try to enter some specific websites like wikipedia, I get it on every browser so it's not my browser, also I stop getting this error when I turn on my vpn. Yes, this is only happening on my personal PC, the rest of my devices inside of my network seem to access these websites with no problems. Yes, I've tried restarting my router, didn't work. Yes, I've tried changing my DNS, didn't work. Yes, I've ran a virus scan, nothing came up. Yes, I've tried incognito mode, didn't work. Yes, I've done a network reset several times, didn't work. The only way I've found to deal with this issue is to use a VPN, which isn't a reliable solution. I hope someone can help me!

Is it possible to have it so my laptop does not lock when it is on a trusted network, such as my home, parents, etc? I know cellphones have this feature, or if they are connected to a certain Bluetooth device, the phone will not ask for the password. I was hoping my laptop would be able to do this as well.

Hi All, I have been encoutnering an issue through work with a wireless bridge/repeater device that we provide with our products. the device is used to connect our Ethernet enabled products to a network via the bridge function of the device which supports 2.4GHz only, it can also repeat the network that it is bridging however we are not relying on this function for use with our products in particular. As of late i have been getting reports of connectivity issues with devices that broadcast a "Mesh" network, routers such as the Sky Q Hub and BT Home Hub 5 are frequently being reported as incompatible. These routers all use a mesh system which i think is the cause of our connectivity issues. Unfortunately my background is hardware engineering, i have limited experince with networking systems & functionality. Could anybody with experience of mesh networks or networking in general help shed some light on this issue? I would like to understand the protocol behind mesh networking to see if i can solve this issue with a software mod. An explanation on what a mesh network is and how a mesh enabled router functions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - PB

Hi Everyone, In the process of building a theory project. a VR arena for lack of a better term. The idea is to have at least 20 units set up with full VR and motion capabilities, using the HTC vive paired with the new Virtuex Omni gaming platforms. The thing I would need help on with this project is NETWORKING, I'm not the most literate when it comes to building a network were all 20 units can communicate with each other and play in the same severs for games like BattlefieldVR, Counter StrikeVR, and Others games of the sort. If anyone could help explain how I would go about networking all these units and also how I could separate certain units to play on their own away from the rest for separate games or parties that would be very helpful. Also any possible issue or bumps in the road that I might be able to prevent or be ready for when they happen would be greatly appreciated. This is a project going on in Colorado so if you are also in the Denver area and want to help explain locally please let me know. StadiumVR

Ok so i get this problem. Basically my internet shows that im from another country, for example, i restart my router and my IP always changes. So for example my IP is now 90.134.167.237 . Im in teamspeak now and it says that im from Netherlands, but when i put my IP on ip-tracker.org it says country - Lithuania. Same thing happens in game osu!, it says that im from Sweden or from Russia, but when i put my ip into ip-tracker it says from Lithuania (Im living in Lithuania). Yeah, and i also get ads in my browser from Sweden, Netherlands, or Russia. Sorry for my bad english, and please, help me ;D Thanks.

I have this network layout in my little enterprise, attached on a Visio file (the continuous line ones). Right now, our main storage is on the DC (a Windows Server Standard 2016 machine, with Essentials Experience role installed), on a Storage Spaces matrix, and our backup solution was WSE routing client and server backups to a 4 TB WD My Cloud NAS. Until now, we worked very well with this setup, because our network is full Gigabit ethernet, and we had not bottlenecks with file handling, because client backup and storage had different routes, and DC and main storage backup was made in midnight. That was in the past, because now we need to improve our backup strategy ASAP. Our NAS died a month ago with a power surge, and all our DC, main storage, Hyper-V and client backups said farewell in that terrible moment. Right now I'm doing backup in a 4 TB external HDD on my DC, and fortunately we didn't had lost really anything, but as you can know, this isn't the best bandwidth-friendly way to handle this. DC is always full bandwidth, so bottlenecks during certain hours are constant, and we don't want to take a risk again with a simple NAS unit. So, I got with an idea: Create a dedicated storage and backup server, like Linus Tech Tips guys, and work in that way. I handled to buy 3 10 Gbps PCI-E cards, one for each server, 3 SPF+ cables and I'm waiting the arrival of a Quanta LB6M switch to complete the array. There is only a small inconvenient: I don't know how to interconnect with more than 1 NIC the servers, hahaha??? I know no body is perfect, so I admit it, I don't know how to implement multiple networking layers, and I really hope you guys can help me (I'm too much into this project to quit right now, hahaha). I have the powerful enough virtual lab to test anything you suggest me, so feel free to tell me how to do this (make the dotted lines in my diagram work seamlessly), and I will practice that in the moment (anyway, I don't have too much to do while waiting for the arrival of my network switch). I will be very grateful with all of you for this. Kind regards, Artorevs (Abel Joasim) Diagrama de red simplificado.vsdx

Dear LTT-Community, Next to my house we are building an office. Inside this office we will get glass fiber internet. In our house we have cable internet. Is there a way to connect these networks to eachother so we can for example access all the printers and network storage from the office in the house? Thanks, Kind Regards, Sven

Simply, I have folders on my Windows 10 PC that i share via right clicking on the folder and selecting share. Other devices on Wi-Fi/the network use VLC which sees my PC name to which i enter my password and i can see all my shared folders. Streaming like this works 100% untill the internet drops then the streaming either stops or cant be played (ininite loading circle). It must be a setting on my router such as DNS, my network setup is as follows: Fibre-> CPE (fibre termination box)-> Ethernet-> Router 1 (WAN)-> Router 1 (LAN4)-> Ethernet-> Router 2 [AP mode] (LAN1) Router 1 details: TP-Link Archer C2 Standard config, DNS: 8.8.8.8 & 1.1.1.1 <-This might be the issue, would setting the secondary DNS to Router 1's IP solve this? Router 2 details: D'link DIR 852 DHCP disabled Please do not convince me to use Plex or other streaming server software, this works perfectly should the internet be up. Thanks.

So let's say I have multiple network cards, each of them connected to a different router & ISP. How can i force an app to use a specific connection? when i enable all the connections in windows 10, all the apps will be connected to the first one enabled. Is there any software that does this? or maybe a batch file? I had tried ForceBindIP tool. But that doesn't work on my laptop.

Hello, I'm doing my Cisco CCNA these days and in the introductory classes, I have been taught by an instructor that the easiest way to identify a Cisco Switch from a router is that they do not have a power on/off switch. I asked why, but I didn't get a proper answer. So I came home and googled it. There were various answers to this but none of them looked like a solid answer. Some say that Cisco acquired a company called Catalyst who were making switches, to make Cisco Catalyst series switches. They say Cisco continued to use the same layout that catalyst used when they made switches on their own. Since catalyst were making switches without a power button Cisco switches also dont have it. (Didnt know this Cisco acquiring another company named Catalyst story until now) Some say routers dont have parts that are hot-swappable. So they need a power button to be turned off. And then the final one I saw was that, network devices such as switches should always be on, hence it has no need for a power button. (If this is a valid reason, then why does Routers have a power switch? They are network devices too. ) I also saw another comment stating that he was asked this question in an interview and didnt know how to answer. Dont want that to happen to me. What do you think the reason for this is?

I have currently got two modems (one of which I'm going to be using purely as a router, so I will consider it a router), the modem will have internet access while the router will (for the most part) be a separate network. I want the devices connected to the routers network be able to receive an internet connection from the modems network. I'm using the second network as kind of an experimental home network (where I can mess with stuff without risk of cutting off the internet connection for myself and others). Is there away I could do such a thing? This might be a slightly noobish question but networking isn't really my strong suit. I was thinking that a solution could possibly be port forwarding all ports on the router to the modem, but then it's not really a separate network is it (I wouldn't think devices would then be able to communicate of the router would they? All traffic would be forwarded to the modem if I forwarded all the routers ports woulden't it?). Also, I might only be able to read your comments for a few hours, because I'm currently at a friends house using their wifi.

Hi, so whenever I connect to my home network my computer about half the time can’t connect, then the other half is it connecting then it dropping completely. When I try to connect to another network like my phones hotspot it works perfectly fine without issue, I’ve tried everything from resetting both my network setting and my router, to doing a bunch of cams promps. Please help

About two or three months ago I was able to utilize the full speed of my internet connection (100mbps download, 50mbps upload) nowadays I am lucky if I can have it running stable at 5mbps. I have already done a network reset, changed my DNS port, and rebooted my modem. My laptop has NOT been moved to a location anywhere different from where I was before those issues, though I do wish to blame my drivers... Here is what happened during one of my troubleshoots... I rolled back the Qualcomm network drivers to an older version, and immediately I reached my Internet's full speed tested at Ookla SpeedTest. Windows prompted me to restart after I closed the device manager dialogue pop ups, I obliged to it. By the time I was back on my system; I could not sustain those speeds yet again. I know it is NOT my internet in itself, because I can reach PERFECTLY those speeds on my iPhone in the exact same location. I do not know what to do anymore, any assistance will be of great, great help... Thank you for reading this.

Hello all, So I've moved recently (1 year ago already) and it's time to fix my network, especially the WiFi. LAN is working fine: PS4 and the PC's are connected via ethernet. My Equipment: "AP 1" TG2492LG-ZG Main Router (for ISP that turns the cabel into internet and TV) Solid 200Mbit/s Ethernet, wifi is good enough on 5Ghz not very good on 2.4ghz Location: Kitchen (Just for social media and music) "AP 2" TP-Link Archer C7 Accesspoint via Ethernet Solid 200Mbit/s Ethernet, WiFi on 5.0 is amazing, Wifi on 2.4 is fast for devices that don't support 5.0 Location: living room (here fast and stable WiFi is a must) "AP 3" TP-Link WR841N Accesspoint via Ethernet Doesn't go higher than 80Mbit/s (even ethernet) but that is because the router is a bit old. Only 2.4Ghz not higher than 80Mbit/s Location: Upstairs in a bedroom (WiFi is needed but doesn't need to be super fast, just for social media) Only the WiFi mess... I live in Europe, here it's normal to live very close to others with houses build against one another. So the problem is that there are way to many Access Points around here (I ran a WiFi scanner/logger app while I walked truh the whole house and it detected 90, yes 90, AP's with unique Mac addresses, 6 of those belong to me. My plan: Currently I've got 5 + 1 guest different SSID's I want to reduce that to 1 or 2. Not sure if I will keep the guest since everyone will just get the password anyway. 1. rename all SSID's to the same SSID (both 2.4 and 5.0 exact same SSID) and same password. AP 1 is in reach of AP 2 so on AP 1 I will disable 2.4Ghz to prevent devices connecting to the slow 2.4ghz on AP1 (AP 1 is in the front of the house and is in good reach of AP2's 2.4GHz, but not in good reach of 5.0. AP1 is profided by my ISP and is not powerful so it will not be used much). 2. AP3 is upstairs not in reach of ap1 and ap2. It will Stay on (on 2.4ghz) for social media and music in the bedrooms. AP3 is far away from AP1 and AP2 so I don't have to worry on that it will stay on the slow network. 3. Do I need to set up specific channels? Same on every AP or as far away for each other as possible???? On the "A2" there is a nice feature that makes sure that the AP automatically forces the device to 5.0 if possible so I will enable that! Any thing I've missed? Leave your tips and ideas down here! All help is appreciated! Bye!

So, my garage is separated from my house (there's another house between my garage and my house). I have a car that has it's own WiFi signal (for configuring settings on the car, not for internet access). Anyway, long story short, I have setup a separate network because the Car WiFi won't reach my house so I've extended it to an AP in my house, via powerline adapters because even though I questioned my Dad saying "are you sure you don't want to run an Ethernet cable, just in case". This network is completed separated from my actual network because the car is an OP DHCP server that takes over anything that is connected. (this whole setup somehow works btw) The Car Wifi Setup: Garage House Car -> AP -> Powerline ---- Powerline -> AP <- Smartphone My question is, would I be able to essentially have 2 networks running over the powerline adapter - using virtual LANs or something I guess. So I can keep a separate AP in my house for the car wifi (and keep that network completely separate to my main network) but then also have access to my home network in the garage? I hope that makes sense? Let me know if you need more info. Thanks, Reece
