I dislike Teamgroup and Silicon Power products as they are unreliable and untrustworthy.

Hello everyone, I'm seeking your assistance and advice regarding a data storage solution, and I'd appreciate your input. Here's what I'm looking for: 1. I'm in need of a local storage solution; I'm not considering cloud options like Google Drive or Dropbox. 2. The solution should offer remote access capabilities, as around 80% of the time I'll be accessing the data remotely. 3. I require the solution to provide controlled access permissions to employees. Not all employees should have access to the entire server. I find Google Drive's permission management appealing, where specific project folders can be shared with designated individuals. However, I can't use a cloud-based solution due to the sensitive nature of the data I'll be storing (it's all legal, related to financial data for my clients that I will be auditing). 4. Additionally, I need an activity log feature. In case an employee modifies or deletes a file, I need to be able to track who made the changes and when. I've noticed that my previous company used Google Drive as a means to access the server located within the organization. It seemed like Google Drive acted as an interface. If this approach is feasible, I'd appreciate learning how to set it up. Feel free to use technical words, I might be an auditor, but I do know things in the tech. I'm truly grateful to all participants for investing their valuable time and knowledge. Your help is much appreciated.

Hey guys! So I want to make my own NAS server, but I'm on a tight budget of 350 USD. My use case for it would be to hold all my media (Movies & TV Series), transcode that to HEVC from h264, and be able to stream at least one 4k and 720p video simultaneously. So I have a few options: I already have (Is this enough for my use case? Or do I need a few more upgrades to make this work?) (I also don't have a case) i3-6098P MSI H110M PRO-VH PLUS (yes I know that board is ancient) [4 SATA ports, 3 PCIe slots, 2x RAM Slots, 1x Ethernet port, plus other IO] 1x 4GB DDR4 2133U MHz RAM 1x Seagate Desktop HDD 1TB (I will utilize more disks in the actual build) Side Note: I am getting a 1TB Seagate Barracuda for $35; 2TB Seagate Barracuda for $93 (yes the $/TB gets worse as you go up and yes it is that bad in my country unfortunately) Or I'm getting a 1TB WD Blue for $38; 2TB WD Blue for $50. (WDs other series like the passport series (I would shuck them) is even more expensive here going up to $47 for 1TB) My Other Options: So I'm mainly looking in the second hand market in my country, and I'm getting the following deals: DELL Desktop Computer ($190 | I can negotiate to bring it down, what should be the recommended price then?): Intel XEON E5 2670 Processor 32GB DDR3 ECC REG RAM (16GBX2) 120GB SSD 1TB Hard Disk 1GB Dedicated Graphics Card (the seller still hasn't told me which graphic card specifically) [The seller hasn't specified any motherboard] Bonus: 22" DELL Full HD Wide Angle Monitor Screen + Height Adjustable Stand Another DELL Desktop ($75 | But this one is kinda missing a lot of info, as they haven't replied yet) i5 3rd Gen 8GB RAM 2TB HHD Nvidia Graphics Card (Which one? idk yet) [No mention of the motherboard as well] TerraMaster F2-210 ($175 | But it only has 2 drive bays, and I plan on expanding in the future, No disks included) 2 Drive Bays Quad Core Spare Parts ($80 | None other equipment included, like case, psu, HDDs etc.) Gigabyte GA-H77-DS3H i5 4th Gen 4x 4GB DDR3 RAM (Total: 16GB) Which option would be the best for my use case scenario? I'm new here so let me know if I should change a few things to adhere to the community guidelines! Thanks!

Budget (including currency): Sub $250 if possible, USD Country: US Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: FreeNAS\TrueNAS? unRAID? Some Linux distro? Something like that. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): So the odds seem good that a prebuilt NAS would be more power efficient and easier to work with but I want something I can mess around with and change if I feel like it. I basically want something I can use as my own cloud storage, and to stream via Plex or Emby. Maybe back up my actual desktop to. I have an old PSU, case, Keyboard & Mouse, AM4 compatible air cooler, etc. So my cost is just in the core components here. I was thinking an Asus Prime B450M or Prime A520M? They seem reasonable for the low price. I'm mostly just wondering what the cheapest APU would be that would boot in either. Maybe Ill have to stick in a graphics card but if I can I would rather avoid it considering what it's going to be for. Might help with transcode for plex? Also 8-16Gb of cheap ram. Seems like a lot but apparently if I use ZFS, min requirement is 8Gb. So I was considering something like an Athalon 3000G or 200/220G. Would these work? I am ok with used parts, ebay, whatever. The problem is even these low end processors that retailed for $50 are $120+ now. Any recommendations of what would work well for this? This isn't a system that's going to get hit hard. Two users streaming at once max, I have two 4tb WD red hard drives and various other old drives I may shove in there.

I want to build a NAS for just basic home use. I have about 11 500GB WD HDD's (not NAS drives) laying around so I would like to have a NAS with at least 8 bays (3 spares). I have a drive large enough to make a backup of the entire NAS. I plan to use the NAS for pictures, videos, movies and computer backups, as well as my game library backup. (about 2TB worth of data). I would like decent transfer speeds to it so maybe an SSD cache or RAM Disk? I would like to use FreeNAS because its free, unless anyone else has any better OS ideas. Price point, I would like to be under $250 max I was thinking a Dell PowerEdge r520?

Hello, I am currently saving some old videos on to my hard drives. I plan on setting up a NAS in which I'll probably use 3-4 drives and RAID 5 (if there's a better option please inform me). I was wondering if it would be as simple as moving the files over to the new RAID setup to have it automatically turned into RAID 5 format, if I have to use a program, or if it's simply not possible. Thanks in advance for the help.

Country: United States Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Nothing really, just storing stuff and launching games for now (if that's even possible) I didn't know where else to put this other than planning so apologies. I'm planning on using a pc my friend is giving me as my first NAS or just a storage machine that I can use from my main gaming pc but I don't really know where to start besides some googling. The focus is to be able to store files on it and have my games launch from it (if that's even possible). This is basically going to be baby's first NAS I guess. I plan to have 8 tbs of storage to start (two 4tb seagate drives as of right now). The pc he's giving me is more than capable and has a 1060 3gb that I suppose I wont need. But as of right now, I don't know how I would set it up or how communication with it would work. I've looked up some guides and particularly LTT's own "Your Old PC is Your New Server" video and while I think I can follow that video I've been hearing a lot about TrueNAS as well as other operating systems/programs for setting up a NAS. I was wondering what all the benefits and drawbacks of these different systems are so any insight is greatly appreciated.

Hey guys! Today I was thinking about my NAS and how I could make it better. I'm running a server on ESXI with Freenas on it and some other VM's. Now I've been thinking about what I should do with my NAS. Right now I have 5 2 TB WD drives in RaidZ2 set up and it's getting more and more filled. I'm thinking how I could best add storage etc. I've been thinking about changing my NAS OS to unraid, as this will give me more flexibility in terms of adding drives (otherwise I'd buy 5 4TB drives and either change the old ones or make another vdev and stripe them together). My NAS OS can be very stupid, as I'm using other VM's for sickrage, plex etc. Now I've read that FreeNAS is faster and more reliable, but is unraid worse? Right now I have at most 3 users on my plex server and I use the NAS as simple media storage and backups. I do however also create my own android apps and later (read when I save some more money) I would like to directly work on my workstation but with the files on the server (as this would stop me needing to back up everything by hand). So I don't know if UnRaid would be able to handle this. Right now I feel I'm somewhat on a crossroads, as I can still remove all my data from my volume and do something completely different, if necessary. Somebody have any suggestions/experiences to help me?

Hello! I need some advice. I'm working as a video editor and my company is going to move out it's postproduction process to our own building(now we are renting workstation and storege space from the bigest TV station in the country). We are at the point that we have to gather some info about setting up infrastruture for the postproduction. We are planing to set up 4-6 workstations connected to a 60 TB(some kind of raid) usable space NAS. The big problem is that all of these workstations will work off this server at the same time. What kind of connection should we go for in these circumstances(fiber channel/10gbe)? What server? Sata or sas drives? How to organise it? Ideas for the servers: https://www.synology.com/pl-pl/products/RS18017xs+ https://www.synology.com/pl-pl/products/RS3617xs+ All of the 6 editors rarely work on better quality material than 1080p. But we expect to be working with 4K in the future. Projects that we work on are kind of big. The raw video material weights around 6TB per project. If you know of any LTT video about their server please link it here too.

Hello there, Next week I'll build myself my very own and first NAS. A short build log on that will follow soon, so keep an eye out if you are interested. It'll be used for Plex, games and backups mainly. Might also run a few VMs on it. OS will be FreeNAS. Therefore I want a cool name for the system but I can't decide so I want you guys to be the judge. These are the contesters: 1. AthaNASia, means immortality but in a cool way so it includes the word "NAS". 2. BanaNAS, bananas NAS is bananas. 3. MoNAStery, is also my favorite arms race map in CSGO 4. NAScency, the Genesis of my NAS which includes NAS, again. 5. GLaDOS, for obvious reasons. My all time favorite PC game too. 6. ZeNAS, a Greek female name meaning "one who is generous", and includes NAS. 7. Names of planets, solar systems or galaxies, haven't looked further into it but I like the idea. Maybe even from Star Wars, as I'm a huge star wars fan. 8. You name it! Have an idea? I'll pin it. So now, you can decide and take great *caugh* influence on my NAS! Thanks for reading, voting and discussing Edit: added Poll, which kinda dissappeared.

Hi everyone, As the title mention, i am planning on getting a new NAS or DAS or even a cheap PC. i have been looking through the LTT forums and the more i dig the more questions i have.. To keep it simple, i would like a media server to be able to access through the internet from other PC, phone, tablet or a smart TV. what i dont need is backup solution (I have dropbox/google drive for that), so no redundancy. Thanks in advance. dm(^.^)mb

I've asked this question on this forum before, so my apologies if you're returning to help me yet again! Anyway, I've been looking to build a NAS from a pre-built computer. I found this one on eBay today and it looks like a perfect fit - the price is right, as well. Do you think it would make a good NAS build? Thanks in advance, Erin Joan

Hi all, I found this on Facebook marketplace and I want to use the parts to build a NAS. It has 8GB of ram (enough to run FreeNas) and 64bit processing but I don't know how many SATA connectors the motherboard has. I've had one person tell me they've used this exact PC to make a NAS but I want to know your thoughts... Also - do you think it's a good price? Thanks in advance, Erin Joan

Hello to anyone reading this I am currently using a raspberry pi and old hard drive as a nas solution for a media / back up server. I'm mainly wondering if It is possible to make a raid setup with different drive sizes / speeds. Cost is a large concern and I'm looking to buy a larger hard drive now and another one to match it a little later down the line. Thanks for feedback !

So I wanted to build a NAS for my dorm room as I have lots of movies/tv show files on my laptop, but it's getting very full and I don't want to carry them all around with me wherever I go. I decided a NAS would be the answer as I could stream the files when home, and I can use plex to stream them if I'm not at home. Below is my parts list for the NAS, it excludes a 16gb flash drive which I'm thinking of using for freenas, unless you can suggest a better way of installing/running FreeNAS. Are these parts appropriate for a NAS? I'm looking to buy a prebuilt NAS to store music, video files, etc. I'm starting to run out of space on my computer and external hard drives. I would like to buy a NAS to store my files and have access to them on all my devices. What are some of the best prebuilt NAS' that you guys recommend now? I'm looking for about 8TB of storage, it can either be a diskless system where I buy my own drives or it can come with drives preinstalled.

I want to build a personal NAS for my home, but I'm not sure which motherboard to choose. I have a I3 1150 processor laying around and was hoping I could use it for this, but I can only find mini-itx motherboards with up to 6 sata 6Gb/s ports. I'd like to have more. Are there any boards that are mini-itx that support more than 6 sata ports? If not I found a add-in card that can add an additional 8 ports, but I would like to know if the os Freenas that i'm going to use supports it.

So this is what I plan on building very soon: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/7swXdC. I don't want any mechanical drives, though. So, should I go with this m.2 and use a NAS? I want one that has like one TB but has another bay. Oh and if you can try to keep the build at $1900 or less if you can. One more thing: would playing games off of the NAS be ideal? Or should I just add a 4tb to the PC and be done? Sorry for so many questions so any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello! I am planning on building a Nas / Server for my house. I do a lot of video editing, do lots of Project Work [ Word, Excel etc.] ,Love to create content and have a lot of media. The thing is that lots of my data gets mixed up around the house, in the laptops, my PCs and finding them is quite hard when there are deadlines and lots of work to be done. So I thought of the Idea of having a Nas / Server in my house to centralise all of that. The Computers in my house: 1. Acer Laptop [Win xp] 2. Toshiba Laptop [Win 8] 3. Custom Built Home PC [win xp] 4. Compaq PC [Win 7] [ultimate] 5. MY GAMING RIG!!!! [Win 7] [ Home Premium ] Other Handheld devices: 1. The usual IPhone, Ipod, Ipad 2. Samsung Tab, S4 Clearly Lots of devices at home 5 computers, and 5 Handheld devices. I do have experience with PCs but not with servers, I hear they are somewhat the same when building with consumer hardware. Thats why I need your help. I did have a plan of how much storage like 2 TB just to get things going then later upgrade. I dont know whether to go with a Atx board or a Mini Itx board. If it was Itx i did see the Cooler Master Elite 120, i thought it had some potential as a server case. The processor and the Mobo is where Im stuck. For Ram i think 4 GB would be enough, and a 400w PSU. For the OS Windows Home Server 2011 seems quite nice. My budget would be around 150$, but its best to get it as cheap as possible. Nothing Fancy just a normal home server. I would like to know more about switches and add-in cards for Gigabit bit second [2 and 4] I also would like to know more about Nas' and servers, and what can be acheived besides network storage. If possible setup remote desktop control over the network. Pls Follow up as soon as possible. Thnx ! Blaze

Western Digital just expanded its Red line of "Nas-ready" drives with new 2.5" models with 750GB and 1TB capacities as well as a new 4TB 3.5" drive. All new drives will now come with NASware 2.0 technology which addresses areas such as compatibility, integration and upgradeability. The small 750GB and 1TB drives sell for $79 and $99 respectively, while the 4TB model sells for $229 ( a lot less than the $310 price for the 4TB black). Hi! I am in need for a NAS able to stream to a TV (LG 55LW550W) via HDMI/DLNA on a 100/100 internet. The router sits ~1m away from the TV, so range and speed isn't any problem! I found this NAS (AS202TE), however, I am unable to figure out if it can transcode and stream "heavy" videos (1080p, h264, .MKV/.MOV, namedropping), as well as stored images, to the TV . Do you have any other, better, suggestions for choice of NAS? (Synology doesn't seem to have the horsepower for streaming and transcoding). Thanks in advance, Will
