So! First post on LTT. Yay! I have an old HP Envy 23-d044 I'm fixing up for funsies (Core i7-3770S, 16GB DDR3 1600), and after watching Linus's $169 Gaming PC Video plus figuring that my HP's MXM slot is basically a PCIe (gen 2) slot, I went to AliExpress for this MXM-to-NVMe adapter plus this NVMe SSD. The gameplan? Make this old computer boot from NVMe via the adapted MXM card slot. I downloaded Clover and anxiously anticipated the moment of truth. But, that's where I started tripping up. For the love of God, I can't get Clover to boot my Windows 11 (or 10) installer disk! The BIOS is set to SecureBoot on with Legacy/CSM disabled; I've tried using both official Windows Media Creation Tool and Rufus to make the installer; I've tried a couple older versions of Clover; I've tried using both Rufus and cvad's BDU to create the Clover disk; I've even tried it on my main PC (MSI B550 Tomahawk, Ryzen 5 5600X, 16GB DDR4 3600) and it exhibits the same problem! Clover boots fine, and when I select my Windows installer USB, I get hung on a black screen. I've also noted that (on both machines) for my main Windows SATA SSD there appear to be two options in Clover: Microsoft EFI Boot from EFI and Windows from EFI, but only choosing the former actually boots the SSD successfully, whereas selecting the latter gets me the same hanging black screen. Again, this behavior exhibits on both my fixer-upper HP and my main PC. So, the only EFI Clover can successfully boot on either machine is the Windows Boot Manager, I guess? So I figure I've gotta be missing something super basic with Clover or my computers' boot settings, but I'm left scouring four-year-old forum threads and scratching my head.

Hello, I am looking to put an AMD GPU in a Dell Precision M6700 or Zbook 17 G2 or similar. All these PCs have MXM 3.0 Type B. I am looking for 4GB GPU BY AMD THAT IS NOT FIREPRO. Preferably along the lines of R9 M395X/M295X or M390X. I am having a really hard time finding these in the USA. Any help or links would appreciated! Thanks in advance! P.S a 4GB 980M or RX 480M would also work. Volvo240.

I have a GTX 1080 MXM (Aetina M3N1080-NN) that I want to plug in to hp elitedesk 800 g1 motherboard. However the 1080 needs auxiliary power. Does anyone know the voltages that is required for the 1080?

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003809556859.html https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003662616515.html Found these on aliexpress , had been searching for these for few years now. Think about experimenting on my Dell M6800, should i jump into these or wait for someone with money and knowledge (Linus) try these first ? Have anyone bought these or seen them in the wild ?

So I know that there is this formfactor MXM intended for replaceable graphics cards in laptops and all in one PCs. i find the Idea of being able to replace the GPU on your laptop fascinating it almost gives you the advantages of a laptop in terms of mobility and desktop in terms of upgradebility. So: what happened? and Why can’t I find it anymore on modern devices?

Hello, My laptop's MXM GPU dies recently, I found some solutions on the internet to plug an eGPU to a laptop using the Express Card slot and an adapter, but I was wondering if I couldn't use my laptop's MXM 3.b port to plug-in the GPU or do I need an adapter as well ? It's an Alienware M17X R4 of 2012 (AMD 7970m version) Thanks !

Hey guys, maybe someone here can help me as im at a loss, you see ive only purchased 1 mxm card b4 from Eurocom computers, as they seem to be the only one that sell it to the mainstream new, thing is, that a client of mine has an 870m on his MSI GT70 2PC laptop, and wishes to upgrade to a much faster GPU as the time passes now (mainly because Nier is running really bad) as i checked specs, he can perfectly install the 980m 100w card in the machine, the thing is, that it is painfully expensive at 817 usd, i was wondering, if i can order a Standard MXM length/size GTX 1060 for the machine (as the 1050ti seems to have the same performance) thing is that several 1060mxm ive seen all have diferent shapes opposed to the Standard MXM Length and width any suggestions?, now the main selling point of the laptop was that it could upgrade in the future, but paying the same as he bought the laptopr for (used) doesnt seem to be a good idea

Hello, I know I've already asked the question, but I unfortunately got no answers about it. I have a laptop and it's GPU (AMD 7970m) died a year ago, replacing it would be quite expensive and the 7970m is not that great. So I wanted to plug in a GTX 970 on the MXM 3.b port, I just wanted to know if it's possible or if I still needed the Express Card adapter. As far as I know, MXM ports work just like PCI E ports, so that shouldn't be a problem I will also use an external PSU to power it Thanks in advance !

MXM GPUs Hi! This thread is the result of a long research. MXM Gpu cards were really difficult to find but I think that a list of MXM GPU could help. Finally, AMD has announced an addition to their other 2 Polaris based embedded lineup, the E9170. TLDR; E9550 = RX 580, E9260 = A little less than a RX 560, E9170 = RX 550. Of course, these are much lower clocked than desktop variants, but also have ridiculously low power usage. The brand new E9170 is listed as having power consumption of "Up to 50 watts", although most variants use 35 watts. The E9170 will come in all 3 major form factors: MXM (Common in laptops), MCM (IC chip), and PCIe (Common in desktops). The target market for these embedded systems are things like Casino games, Medical displays, Multi-display advertising, Etc. This new E9170 will be produced for the next 7 years, until 2024, which means this is a huge opportunity for AMD to gain long-term, recurring revenue. Videos: Opinion: This is where Polaris really shines, and IMHO this is more important than the desktop Polaris variants. Polaris is ridiculously efficient, but the best chips have always been reserved for embedded, with the more power hungry versions going to desktop. I remember seeing this in a jayzTwoCents video pointing this out, I will add it once I find it. EDIT: I added the jayzTwoCents vid (in the video spoiler) outlining how power consumption on better binned Polaris is simply stunning. Clevo Custom Laptops What is a custom laptop? It is a laptop in which you have the ability to choose how much RAM to put, to choose between what SSD / HDD or different panels, cpus and gpus. It is also useful to be able to take a barebone without disks and license. What's Clevo? Clevo is a Taiwanese ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) who designs and manufactures its products, gaming laptops or also high performance mobile workstations. Clevo also manufactures barebone cases for other OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and these OEMs fill these barebone cases with the necessary hardware. Most of the brands (Dell, Alienware, HP, Lenovo, Acer) use barebones made by ODM such as Quanta, Compal, Clevo and others. What's special? The use of desktop cpus on its products (N3xx, N6xx, W6xx, P7xx, P8xx) is a particular feature of this manufacturer, which also uses the MXM format gpus in the most powerful platforms (P7xx, P8xx). Other OEMs (Dell, Alienware, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Gigabyte, Aorus) use soldered cpu/gpu for their gaming laptops. (here more infos) Clevo does not market its products directly but it distributes them through a worldwide network of System Integrators and Resellers that rebrand them and customize them to the customer's taste. ( List of Clevo Resellers ) System Integrators such as Sager, Origin, XMG / Schenker, Metabox, Obsidian PC, Eurocom are among the most well-known in the world. Hey guys, i have a little nut to crack... and... i think it's stupid on top too...but, doesnt asks, doesnt get ^^ So i'd have a spare 1060 and my dad has Alienware 15 with 970m which could use the upgrade. The question is, will it fit... I noticed that the clevo has a bit different PCB with what looks like aditional power connecter, https://store.alezka.com/en/laptop-gpus/10-nvidia-gtx-1060-6gb-mxm-clevo.html then the 970m. https://store.alezka.com/en/laptop-gpus/4-gtx-970m.html it's most def. stupid question but, doesnt asks, doesnt gets ^^ And it might be easier to try to swap with a bit of DIY, then to try to sell it and buy another... Cheers

Asrock have shown off (the motherboard for) their deskmini Z270 motherboard and barebones system, and oh my god it's small. At under 3 litres and featuring an MXM slot, it's going to be the most power-dense barebones system that's avalible on the market. For those who don't know, STX is Intel's new SFF board standard, measuring ~5x5 inches. Asrock extended that standard to inclue an MXM slot. WARNING lots of pictures: The board features 4 M.2 slots.. Holy shit 3 of which are PCIe 3.0 x4, and 1 being for a wifi card. Yay it's fully featured on the front and rear The system will be able to accept up to 120W MXM cards, which will be provided with the barebones system (So basically, a GTX 1060 or RX 480/470/460 will be able to be used) but higher powered cards could be used if a more powerful power brick is used. Cooling will be handled by some sort of downdraft cooler, but no other pictures have appeared of it, and therefore we can't really say much about it other than it uses heatpipes and what looks to be a 90mm fan. Recently I got out my old gaming laptop. An ASUS G51VX. Been reading up on upgrades such as CPU, RAM, and storage. Unfortunately there hasn't been much help in the way of graphics. Asus made custom MXM GPU PCBs. This means that it is impossible to use an ordinary MXM card. So the alternatives are overclocking software(IF they'll work on such old graphics), or leaving it alone. I began to wonder if it was possible to hard mod an MXM GPU, even a custom one. I mean if it can be done on ordinary full size GPUs, why not am MXM. So far my search has yet to yield any useful results. If there is a precedence of hard modding MXM cards, could someone comment a link or even shed a small amount of light on this(good or bad, doesnt matter). I was thinking about buying 1 or 2 of my card and poking around carefully. Thoughts?

What do you do if you have a big store and need to drive a bunch of displays in 4K? How about a GPU with nothing but ETHERNET outputs? Buy an Advoli TA6 Performance from Advoli: https://lmg.gg/8KV94 Buy an LG 43UD79: On Amazon: https://geni.us/Wf2c On Newegg: https://lmg.gg/8KV9V Buy an Acer Predator XB271HK: On Amazon: https://geni.us/D1LL On Newegg: https://lmg.gg/8KV9q

I saw a listing for a Clevo RTX 2080 on Ebay for $1,900 and you can also get the heat sink and screws to fit for an extra $100. I have a Zotac mini that uses an MXM card, but it hardly get enough power and cooling as is for the 2070 in it. My question is, is ray tracing even worth it for laptop or mini pc gamers? To me, I feel like even with the correct cooling to keep the beast quenched, it would still not perform as efficient and you would be going out of your way for a mobile card that could easily be an full external thunderbolt card in the mindset of mobility type systems. Thoughts?

Hi all, I have an Asus G750JX, Highest spec model (i7 4860QM, SSD, GTX 880M, 32Gb ram...) My question is.. Can I upgrade my GPU to something like a GTX 1060 / 980m ? The 880m can pull 150w so I know my cooling can take it.. Just not sure on MXM compatibility. All I've found is old 7xx series cards from this PC on ebay and they don't look standard MXM format. any suggestions are welcome! Thanks, Adam

I have an HP Elitebook 8540p (got it for 200 USD, for school), which by default has an Nvidia NVS 5100M. Now this is quite lackluster, so I'd like to upgrade it, to something that is a bit better. (Preferably AMD, because that has better driver support on linux) But here's the thing: I have done some google-ing, and found that there is only a select few GPUs that are whitelisted in the bios. I think these: NVIDIA NVS 5100 NVIDIA Quadro FX 880 NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800 ATI FirePro M5800 However this guy on youtube (https://youtu.be/d_8KhTTK25Y) upgraded it with a Quadro 2000M 2GB, which is not on the list I've read on some forum a while ago this is because the Dell MXM cards have ther own VBIOS, and don't rely on the chip on the motherboard? If so, I'd like to use a FirePro M5100, which is not in the list, but in theory should work? I've looked at something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-FIREPRO-M5100-2GB-DDR5-MXM-GPU-Graphics-Card-For-Dell-M4600-M4700-M4800/193052631348?hash=item2cf2d56134:g:lM4AAOSwm~hdVmgG Will it work?

Hello everyone, Thanks for coming to this post!! ( Need some Help) I got old Clevo laptop, and want to upgrade it to the max. ( i know it's not worth it), but its my loved machine and it runs grate even today, only GPU power is low. In the Bios as motherboad name say: P170EMx Clevo Specifications at this monent: I7 3720QM 16gb ddr3 and Nvidia Quadro 5010M 4GB I checked a lot of forums but there is old post... some said that upgraded perfectly with gtx 680m and some say that is working with gtx 980m mxm 3b but post from long time ago. and on some sites and ebay i saw mxm 3.0b cards going as new like gtx 1060 6gb. So my Questions: Where i can find bios updates for my model? ( Clevo website is a bit messy and dont show bios as downloadable think, only some old drivers. Any knoledge about clevo or my model and mxm graphics card upgrade? what maximum i could get. Its confosuing befouce of mxm 3.0 3.0b 3.1 plus dont know how much my bios can support it. Plus power delivery And what Cpu could i get? as 45W i can get i7 3840qm but i saw there is i7 39xx EM or something like that but 55W tdp. Will it support ? Thank you for your help everyone. Hopefully i can lvl up some knowledge and upgrade my laptop safely.

hello. im have a project. i want to build a portable windows gaming console, for that i want to take a Lattepanda Alpha 864s wich has a m.2 M-key on the bottom. so i thought i can buy a adapter just from m.2 to mxm, becasue its basicly all PCIe, BUT i can't find any adapter wich could be able to do this. also i found out. mxm is not a standart standart, because every GPU has other ports or things, so its even more comlpicated. i wanted to add a GTX 970M to my lattepanda, becasue it should give me plenty of performance by only taking 75watts of power. so power everything with a USB-C PD power source. but as i sayd id it possible to do that. becasue i dont want to buy all these expenncive parts to see everything goes in smoke in the end. you know? do you have a idea, if and how i can make this work? maybe LTT can try it and make a video, it would be a fun topic, maybe. best regards Mutz03.

Hi! I have a new old laptop at home which supports a MXM 3.0 card. (Currently a Quadro FX 2800M which i think is a 3.0b card.) Is there any good place to buy mxm cards or is my best bet someone selling on ebay? Also, what is the best MXM card i can put in this laptop? 200W power chord if that matters.. Specs: Intel Core i7-Q840 Quadro FX 2800M 12GB Ram (Not sure what brand etc)
