I dropped my CPU, and now my dram light is on. Need Help!
Seamus X posted a topic in Troubleshooting
I delided my cpu 9700k and used liquid metal in replacement. I tried to repaste my cpu yesterday, and accidently dropped it. The lid was dropped open. I reapplied the liquid metal, and put the cpu back in, but my computer is acting weriedly. It turns on and off for a few cycles, and then start to turns on, but there is no video output. Then the dram light is on. But I am sure that the ram is fine, as I was using them yesterday. I now ordered a 9900k as replacement for cheap. But I am wondering is my motherboard having issues? Should I just replace the motherboard and cpu altogether? Is it possible that the dram light is on becasue my cpu's memory controller is not working, and the motherbaord is fine?- 2 replies

Hello, because of a holiday job I have just 500€ at hand, so I wanted to replace my 2600X with a 3900X, because in CPU intensive games like Battlefield, but also in video editing and rendering my RTX 2070 gets a CPU bottleneck here and there. Now to my question: Does it make sense to keep my B450 Tomahawk or should I buy a X570 board? Especially since the Tomahawk is always called one of the, if not the, best B450 board and especially the VRMs are well suited for OC. I'm not very interested in PCie 4.0, because I only have a M.2 Sata SSD installed. Besides the monetary aspect, replacing the MB is of course much more complicated than just replacing the CPU. What are your thoughts? Will I achieve the same performance as with an X570 board or is overclocking possible?

I'm really itching to order my parts and build my new PC, but I just found out about 4th gen ryzen and that they only support 500 motherboards. I am thinking about upgrading to 4th gen a couple years from now so I don't know if I should just go ahead and order it and buy a new motherboard when I need it, or just be patient and wait? (My PC rn is slowing down and is getting hard to play games)

Hi, I am building a PC for my brother. The price limit is $1100 AUD. He wants to play games like Rust, CS:GO and Payday at decent settings, 60 FPS. He said he wants a 500GB SSD, the SilverStone Sugo SG13B case (https://www.pccasegear.com/products/30716?gclid=Cj0KEQjww7zHBRCToPSj_c_WjZIBEiQAj8il5NLYQDN-yxSOyNH9UbO_YhguJfHdprTZLxQZeRESn7IaAiyV8P8HAQ&gclsrc=aw.ds) and he already has a graphics card that he said he wants to use. So any suggestions on the RAM, Motherboard, CPU (and Cooler?) and Power Supply? Thanks

I have just checked in HW Monitor and one of the temps on the MOBO is really high, and I want to know, if this is normal.

So I was on Intel ARK and i was looking at my motherboard's chipset (Z97), and it had a USB section and it was "Number of USB Ports" and it said "14." Does that mean I can only have 14 USB Ports readily available or I can use up to 14 USB Ports at once. Right now I'm using 6 USB 3.0 ports on my motherboard's I/O with 2 USB 2.0 ports currently unused., but lets say I wanted to use my front panel connectors on my case, and also note that I have 2 USB 3.0 ports on my case and another 2 USB 3.0 ports on my 5.25" card reader with 4 USB 2.0 ports that are currently not in used. Let's say I somehow manage to plug in a USB Device into all of those connectors, does that mean at I can use all of those USB Devices at once? My idea sparked is when my USB 3.0 Header on my motherboard broke (pins fell off, literally), and I saw USB 3.0 PCI-E cards with built in USB 3.0 headers built into the PCI-E cards. So can I get a USB 3.0 splitter and split that signal into my 5.25" card reader and my case's USB 3.0 header? I know that I will never use all those USB headers, but I was the functionality of being able to use any USB Port I can use on my computer. Thanks! http://ark.intel.com/products/82012 (Z97 Intel Ark page) P.S. Sorry for this lengthy thread, I made the grammar better than usual to hopefully please your reader's needs.

I'm thinking about buying an i7 7700k from ebay to save some money. Most people wouldn't recommend buying an i7 for an H110m motherboard because of the lack of overclocking. I currently do not want to buy a z270 motherboard so I'd like to know if I would need to update the BIOS or not. I currently do not have a Skylake cpu with me to do the update. However, on the Gigabyte website states that all of the supported CPUs require the SAME BIOS version. This basically means I wouldn't need to update. Can someone please revise the information and make sure I'm not making a mistake before buying an i7, thanks. Here is the link to the specifications the motherboard: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-H110M-M2-rev-10#support-cpu

So, a fellow gamer and PC enthusiast here. I've been trying to decide what to get next for my PC, but I'm not totally sure what fits my "case" (nice puns right?). I'm torn between the new Ryzen lineup or Intel's i7 7700k and mobo + RAM. I hate to say it, but I'm your typical gamer and I'm trying to future proof my whole build here. So, should I get the new CPU, mobo, and RAM? Or should I get an SSD and wait? PC Specs: CPU: AMD FX-8100 GPU: Gigabyte Rx 480 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2 Storage: Toshiba DT01ACA100 1TB PSU: EVGA 600w Bronze RAM: DDR3 1300MHz OS: Windows 10 Here's a benchmark from UserBenchmark: UserBenchmarks: Game 40%, Desk 33%, Work 27% CPU: AMD FX-8100 Eight-Core - 37.9% GPU: AMD RX 480 - 62.7% HDD: Toshiba DT01ACA100 1TB - 70.8% RAM: Unknown 2x4GB - 38.7% MBD: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2 Thanks, A Sad Gamer

for some context, i recently bought 3 broken threadripper motherboards with the hope that i could repair them and use one in a project. one of the boards is badly damaged and i am intending to use as a donor board. the board in the pic isnt as bad. i have spent about an hour straitening bent pins, and now the only thing i can see wrong is the missing item, which i belive is a capacitor. each of them is about 2-3mm long. i have looked into micro soldering and think it would be possible to de-solder a cap from the donor board and put it on the board which is in better shape. problem is im a complete noob and have very little electrical knowledge and 0 micro soldering experience. I would like to know if the cap is even necessary, as im aware sometimes extra components are used for redundancy. if i do need to fix it, would this tool be enough(TS100): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MDTO6X7/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=rossmanngroup-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01MDTO6X7&linkId=2d7c13ceaf8725fb1aadce13d12a16c3 i saw that Louis Rossman recommended it, and it is fairly inexpensive compared to the alternatives. I would also be interested to hear about solder/flux recommendations for this project, as its another area i know very little about. any info, advice, recommendations or tips would be really helpful to me. thank you for reading.

Hey Guys! I built a PC with a ROG Strix Z390-F Gaming motherboard and 2x8GB hyperx 3333MHz RAM. There is a MemOK! switch on the motherboard which is default on when I got it. As I know if it is on, it is runs tests on the memory when i turn on the PC. I installed win10, everything works fine, but should this MemOK! switch always on, or should I switch it off? (It is a switch not just a button). Thanks!

Hello everyone I'am new here. But I do have one question, I have been watching Linus Tech Tips for a couple of years now and I always see his storage bins for CPU's. Does anyone know what they are called or where to get them? I work at a computer repair store and we have CPU's everywhere, and I have been look for a place to store them where they are organized. I have tried just a traditional storage bin from the hardware store but was quickly over run by screws and such. Thank you for the help!

Hello I had been having this problem with my graphics card (I think this is the cause). Basically when I was running games on my pc my monitor randomly would go black and the pc would try to restart itself, my graphics card (fans still spinning) would make an electric cutting out sound and the LED would cut out. The LED would then turn on only to be cut off again. The cycle repeated like this until I turned the power of with the psu. I tried doing downgrading the driver and that seemed to take care of the restarting problem. Except I was getting freezes in games. After a while I installed a 2 tb hard drive and unplugged the cable to the gpu, when I plugged it in again I’m guesing I used to much force because when I started the pc the graphics cards LED didn’t even turn on. I reinstalled the graphics card and it worked but I can’t remember what happened after that. One day after not using my pc for a bit of time I decided to download a game, after downloading I played for about fifteen minutes and then it did the restarting thing. I turned of the psu and tried to restart the pc but this time I couldn’t get to the home screen before it restarted. And when I tried again didn’t even turn on. I have tried reinstalling the graphics card like before but it leads to the same result, as in those three restarts. Any ideas? I have three culprits gpu psu and mobo. Asrock x470 master sli (3months old) rx 580 used before (2+ years old) psu be quiet 500w 80+ silver (3 months old)

I just inherited a new desktop with 2 Samsung 2.5 inch SSD's in what I think is a RAID 0 configuration. I want to swap in a new motherboard because the old one is a proprietary dell board that's incompatible with modern GPU's... I have no experience with RAID and i'm unsure of what will happen if I just swap everything to the new motherboard...PLEASE HELP! Here's what I know: The drives are directly connected to the motherboard with SATA cables and there's no other hardware that would be managing RAID as far as I can tell. When viewing disk management disk 0 is marked as basic and there's no other visible internal drives. Device Manager shows a Intel RAID 0 Volume I cant find any software on the system associated with Raid management Computer Specs: (Nothing Special but want to possibly use it for a Living Room Entertainment PC) i7 2600 (Stock Cooler) 16GB RAM 2 Samsung 500 GB 2.5" SSD INVIDIA 750 TI (Only GPU I could find that wold work with the lame locked down dell motherboard hence my desire to swap motherboards) Thermaltake 650 Gold Power Supply

Basically my question is if OEM CPUs (AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G) work on consumer motherboards. Recently I came across an offer to buy an AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G on the internet and I wondered if I could even use such chip, because it seems to be an OEM-only CPU.

So I have never built a PC or anything but have modified some. My PC is about 4 years old now and is starting to slow me down while working and gaming. My idea right now is to keep most everything but upgrade my processor and get an SSD. If I get a new processor I don't know if I have to upgrade my motherbaord too. I want to keep it as cheap an upgrade as possible because if I spend a lot I should probably just buy a whole new PC. So my question to you guys is what you would buy/upgrade in my PC for $100-$200? Specs: Motherboard: ASUS K30AD_M31AD_M51AD Processor: Intel Core 13-4170 CPU @ 3.70GHz 1TB Harddrive GPU: Gefore GTX 750 RAM: 12 GB DDR3 OS: Windows 10

Hey guys,My laptop is the ASUS F556UA-UH71, and its motherboard number is the X556UAK. It has 8GB of RAM soldered on the motherboard itself with the following specs: DDR4 2400MHz, timing: 15-15-15-35. Mind you, even though it's rated at 2400MHz, it runs at 2133MHz due to the processor, which doesn't support frequencies higher than that (i7-7500U). There is an expansion slot and I wanted to expand it to 16GB, not only because of the work that I do and some light gaming, but also to experience the performance benefits of a dual channel setup. So I did some research to find compatible RAM sticks. If I go with a 2400MHz stick, the best timing that I could find is 16-16-16-39. So my best bet is to go with a 2133MHz, and the best timing on those are 15-15-15-36. Actually, there aren't too many options available for me, the only two that I can choose are the G.SKILL Ripjaws F4-2133C15S-8GRS or Corsair Value SelectMy question is, will I run into problems by installing one of these sticks, due the different, but similar timings compared to the one that's soldered on the motherboard? Will the difference in frequencies cause problems, even though the 7500U doesn't support higher frequencies than 2133MHz and the one on the motherboard is rated at 2400MHz?

Hello I was wondering about custom laptops being a thing. I know there are barebones packages you can get, but you can only put storage and memory in them. Is it possible to create a custom laptop “case”/enclosure and find motherboard for it as well as a screen with appropriate connections. I am just very unsatsified with the current market because I want a thin powerful gaming machine. If there is anything I could do please list in your comment.
