Hey LTT NAS enthusiasts. I'm considering purchasing a Synology NAS to set up RAID 10. Is there a way to specify in their software which drives RAID 1 mirrors and which ones RAID 0 stripes? Long story short, I have 6 drives, 3 from WD and 3 from Seagate, same capacity & specs . I want to ensure that mirror drives in a set aren't from the same vendor. If such a thing isn't possible via software, would alternating them while inserting into the bay do the trick? I'm a little worried that Synology might randomly pick drives for mirroring, and I'd end up with 2 drives from the same vendor purchased from the same batch, increasing the likelihood of 2 drive failure and RAID 10 non-recoverability. Apologies if someone has already answered this. I've searched for this info in various forums and the Synology manual but couldn't find an answer.. Thank you

Hey guys, I have an old Sony Xperia Z tablet which was bought used when it was already long in the tooth and then used as a kitchen Youtube device for a while. Sadly at this point no apps really support it anymore, Android 5.1.1, any the hardware wouldn't be much good anyway nowadays, can barely decode 1080p browser streams. I have been trying to find a way to keep it as a functional display (with video/audio), but the software implementation has been problematic. Sony was deep into its own Bravia/Xperia ecosystem by then ~2012, backed by Miracast apparently, but all the functionalities seem to be focused around casting to the TV, not to it specifically, even tough in the One Tap Setup it does list "Mirror your Xperia Phone Screne on your Xperia Tablet". However, ofcourse i don't have a Sony Xperia 2012 phone and i'm trying to get my Samsung S10e to cast to it. They don't find eachother over the network, setting up Mirroring on the tablet actually puts me into a "mirror on a big screen", not offering any other option, and the One Touch Connect which would use NFC, just gives me a NFC read error when trying with my phone. I'd really love to keep using it as a small display and i'm willing to root it to keep it usable. Also, while the S10e is primary concern, i'd like to also use it with my girlfriend's Pixel. I have found apps which can just share the screen, but there's significant audio latency or just don't pick up audio at all.

Hi friends, I have 2 exact 512GB NVME hard drives and 2 exact 2TB mechanical hard drives. I've planned my system in this way so I could clone the whole each drive to its twin drive, for backup purpose in case the first one fails. This should include the C drive with the system files should make the target drive bootable in case again the first HD with the system files gets corrupted or something. So I am looking for a software that will let me mirror/clone those hard drives to their twin hard drives. I'd also like to mirror the disks on a certain time daily or once a week, in this way I think I won't mirror viruses or bad files etc', if something will go bad with my PC I'll just boot from the other HD and I'm back in the game. I've done it in the past and it has saved me on windows 7 and a software which is called "alwaysync" which is now "goodsync". but I'm not sure it could do what I want anymore and even if it does it's an annual payment which I don't like.. I have no problem paying a one time payment.. Is there a way to do this through windows? Do you think I could use robocopy and windows Task Scheduler? If anyone knows of software to recommend, I'd be happy to know Thanks so much in advance! Roy.

Hey Are there any alternatives to displaying my PC to my smart TV without routing a really long 10+ meter cable from my PC in my bedroom to my smart TV within the living room? Got some buddies coming over this week and thought I might try to get some co-op games going on the big screen. Yes, there is an option to move the PC from the bedroom to the Living room but not too sure on ripping perfect cable management under my desk / room. Simplest solution would be to route a HDMI cable, but a quick google search doesn't really yield me any other results besides wired connections. Anyone got some experience / solution to this? Let me know!

Hey I have now had my two 3 TB HDD's in RAID 1 for a couple of days and every day they recync which takes many hours. It kind of ruins the purpose of redundancy when it's just wearing out the drives. When I search on Google people suggest it's something with the power or maybe a software to hardware communication error. Though I can easily restart my PC after resync is done without it starting to resync again. I can also shut down the PC and turn it on again with no problem. It's after I have slept and turn the PC on again when it's a new day it starts to resync. (Yes I turn off the power in the socket and pull out the cable when I have shut down the PC properly). My guess is that it maybe has something to do with the motherboard? Maybe fast boot or something? When the PC is shut down and all fans stops, some red light on the motherboard is still glowing. The way I created the RAID 1 volume was just in Disk Management -> add mirror. Don't know if there's anything to be done in BIOS or something. Here's my system: Windows 10 Pro Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM008 3 TB RAID 1 Western Digital Red WD30EFRX 3 TB RAID 1 Intel i7-4790K @ 4.7 Ghz overclock Gainward GeForce GTX 1070 Phoenix GS Kingston HyperX FURY Black 2x8 GB (DDR3) Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB Asus Z97-PRO Gamer Corsair RM750 Other PCI-E connected devices: TP-LINK TL-WN881ND (wifi adapter), Creative Sound Blaster Z (soundcard) I really appreciate some help or some clever thougts on the matter Thanks in advance

I was looking for an application for windows 10 that can allow me to mirror my screen to a different computer that is not on the same network. It would be used so that me and my friend that doesn't live nearby anymore can watch some movies I have. Something similar to the rabb.it website. It has to be able to transmit sound so not like Skype screen share, and preferably with an easy to use UI and not too much latency. Googles Remote control could be nice if it didn't give him control of the PC and transmitted sound. Thanks in advance! -triniP

I would like to know which is best for performance. MDADM mirror or ZFS Mirror. There will be 2 drive pools, each containing 2 matching disks. A single drive on its own I can get easily 100~MB/s (reads) over the network. I setup a freenas zfs pool not really knowing what i was up against and i got 60MB/s (reads) over the network. I was hoping for better performance. Senerio: 2x 4tb seagate nas drives 2x 2tb wd reds Intel G1830 (dual core @2.80 GHz) 8GB of ram 1Gb Ethernet link (might be upgraded if there is a need) Drives are on the intel chipset sata ports but i might buy a lsi based hba and flash it. Thanks for your help!

Disscus in here since this sub is pretty much dead A while ago Linus was at and event (I don't remember which one) that he showed a USB Dongle to connect your Smartphone (Android only I think) to show/mirror your Phone screen on the Pc with little to no Lag. Does anyone know a solution like this or remember which video it was? I'm really interested on buying one.

Hey all, A family member operates a small business (only two employees) out of their house and has asked me to construct a form of network based backup for the two computers present at the office (A laptop and desktop). I know basically nothing regarding networking, so I am just after some advice on where to start? From what they told me they want to be able to backup in such a way that one of the employees can take a drive home at the end of the day with the latest backup on it, and when they return the next day plug it in and it rebuilds the data on it to the latest version. I don't even know if this is possible, but any advice/tips on how I should approach this would be really appreciated Cheers

Is it possible to mirror a monitor onto another with a lower refresh rate and still run the main monitor at the higher refresh rate? I have 4 monitors and decided to mirror the main monitor onto the 4th monitor to work as basically a tv to view from another angle. My main monitor is 2560 x 1440 144 Hz, and the smaller monitor is 1600 x 900 60 Hz. It all seems to work perfectly until I run a game on the main monitor. The game never runs over 60 fps. I messed around with windows for a few days trying to fix it and I've tried having the different monitors plugged into different display outputs from my pc, but I can't seem to get it to work. So I'm wondering if anyone knows if it is even possible to have one screen run at 144 Hz with it mirrored to another at 60 Hz? And if so does anyone have any ideas how to do that?

Expanding/redoing my storage, but decided to buy before researching. I have 4 3TB HDDs and 2 6TB HDDs and I'm looking for better then HDD performance with fault tolerance. I had RAID 5 setup, but read in many places that with drives larger then 2TB one of my other drives would most likely die before a rebuild would complete. If this is so then RAID 5 and really 6 are both out (even with 6 I'd rebuild, probably have another die during the rebuild and then have to rebuild again after it was finished...repeat until all drives are replaced or get lucky). So, I figured RAID 10 (with three groups of RAID 1 [3+3]+[3+3]+[6+6]) would work...until I remembered RAID 0 requires the same size volumes, so I'd lose out on half my 6TB drive storage. This brings me to two options that I can think of RAID 10 (with two groups of RAID 1 [3+3+6]+[3+3+6]) or RAID (5E or 6)/1 + 0 (With my 3TB drives RAID 5E or 6; my 6TB RAID 1; then those under RAID 0) or setup the 3TB in RAID 0 for performance and 6TB spanned for backup. I again don't like the idea of RAID 5/6 if i'll have that rebuild loop, but the two group RAID 10 doesn't feel good (very little knowledge, so if its fine tell me and I can through it out of my mind) and the backup means if something happens I have to transfer everything one-way or the other. Other ideas are always welcome. This is for a plex media server on Windows Server 2012 R2, where I have 6TB of content which I planned to grow and I really don't want to have to rip my movies again. It took weeks. That's why I want the redundancy. The performance is just so I can watch a movie while the kids each watch something, have all of use stream at original quality and have no buffer hiccups for anyone. I have spent many hours (15+ that I can remember), trying to get a RAID 10 like setup that could expand seemlessly...it doesn't appear to exist ?. Help, please.

TL;DR what filesystem/mirroring etc to use for 2 new drives in a desktop (not counting the SSD and existing HDD that will remain separate). Hi all, I currently have a 480GB SSD and a 2TB 7200 RPM HDD in my desktop, however I was running low on space so I bought two 6TB 5900 RPM (I believe) hard drives to migrate personal photos and videos to. I keep hearing how RAID is no match for new filesystems, and I was looking at the REFS filesystem, but it looks like windows 10 pro can no longer format drives to that filesystem. There doesn't seem to be an official ZFS port for windows yet, and as I want to put my personal photos on the new drives, I want something stable. What's the best (free/cheap) option out there? Should I stick to windows mirroring? 6TB is alright for me for now if I need to do RAID 1 (which is why I bought those drives) but if there is some method that relies on parity sections that leaves me with >6TB of usable space, then all the better. My top priority is securing my files. I'm a bit confused about how useful RAID 1 is in terms of preventing file corruption due to bad writes/RAM issues etc, or if it will just copy the error to both drives, so any clarification would be helpful. Finally, is there any real benefit to RAID vs leaving it as JBOD (I haven't opened the HDDs so I can probably still return one at this point). Note - I understand none of these solutions would be considered a backup. In regards to a NAS, it's not feasible right now though at some point I do want to invest in one. I have some of the more important (mainly older) files I care about backed up on the cloud/portable harddrives, and while new photos get resized and uploaded to google, there are probably months at a time where the only full size copy will be on my desktop. Thanks in advance!

Hi all, I dont know if my title makes any sense but I tried. I use a projector aside my PC for media and gaming with friends who prefer a bigger screen. One Problem however is that I have to bend back to control what the projector is showing. I couldn't mirror my display and projector because my display is 4k and projector is similar to 1080p (dont know exact) and mirroring looks very weird on one display, depending on resolution. I am here to ask if there is a program that can show what my projector (hooked up to same pc) is showing on my main display. If anyone has any recommendations that would be great! Thanks! -Aedan

ANYONE KNOW A TRUE FREE PROGRAM THAT WILL GIVE ME THE ABILITY TO KEEP AN EXACT COPY OF MY STORAGE DRIVE? ONLY WIN10 PRO CAN DO MIRROR BACKUPS..... I'VE ALREADY COPIED EVERYTHING ONTO ANOTHER DRIVE - I JUST WANT TO BE ABLE TO RUN SOMETHING THAT WILL COPY OVER ANYTHING NEW TO THE BACKUP DRIVE..."DIFFERENTIAL MIRROR BACKUP" I'VE TRIED FBACKUP AND EASEUS ETC ETC BUT THEY ALL ONLY OFFER A FULL *SLOW BACKUP

I'm learning how FreeNAS works, but just wanted to clear something up. I understand that the drives in a VDev can't be changed, and that VDevs make up the ZPool. I understand that if a VDev fails the entire ZPool fails and all data is lost. And I understand that not having redundancy and losing a striped drive in a VDev will cause that VDev to fail. However, if the RAID array is setup for redundancy there is a way to save the data, and I get that there is a way to rebuild data from something like RAID6 (Z2) but I'm not going to get into anything that complex with my first build. If there are just two drives that are RAID 1 and mirrored in a single VDev in the ZPool, and one of them fails, what happens? Does the NAS stop working or will it allow you to use the drive that isn't dead until the other is replaced? Is it as simple as replacing the drive and there's an option in the web GUI or a command to rebuild the data from the good old drive to the new one? I'm not very familiar with RAID in general, in a simple mirrored setup like this can you just connect the drive to a normal desktop and extract the data? Or does it HAVE to be read in a RAID array connected to another replaced drive?

Hello guys, giving quick info and jumping into the topic. I'm an 11th-grade student at a high school and I have a physics project to do because I have chosen physics from other lessons to get a yearly project from. So I need to impress people. I recently opened up a topic in this sub-forum if you've seen it, probably not. I asked about some ideas that I'll choose and do my physics project using that idea. I settled at one of them but I need a little bit of help with the things I'm going to need and I'll talk specifically about one of them here. A parabolic mirror, that's the part that seems to be hard to acquire for me. Oh, and the project I'm going to make is "THIS" one. But as you can tell, mirrors are EXPENSIVE. And a parabolic mirror? Don't even ask about it, I won't be able to buy one of them. I'm probably gonna make one. "But how?" you ask. I don't have much idea either Okay actually, I have. "THIS" video seems like the way I'll probably gonna follow. In the comments of that video, some mentioned that this mirror is not parabolic but rather kind of part of a big sphere-like. Admittedly I'm not a master about air pressures and how it affects soft membranes so... I don't really know what would be the problem, help me out with that too guys. And how you get the LED and camera locations according to the mirror? Like is the camera in the center or they both have the same offset from the focal point of the mirror? I would love to read your suggestions and replies, thanks so much already. ^^ (I'll try to reply immediately.)

I want to mirror my main drive (SSD) but not using the same controller. I want to install a secondary controller, presumably PCI-e SATA card with a second SSD. Not sure of the proper card or proper setup. I am sure that I want an uncorrupted version of my main drive. I have taken 2 hits to my drive where I have had to do re-installs; hence the secondary card. Not ready for a new mb and rebuild at this time. I have an HDD to use for back-up. Thanks, John

Hey, Attempting to mirror a display out to 3 monitors, have some digital signage that needs to be mirrored out from a pc onto 3 monitors. Currently I'm only able to mirror onto 2 monitors and then the 3rd is extended, as far as I understand this is a limitation of windows. Wondering if there is any product or even software that can take a single input and mirror it out to two displays through hardware preferably. Edit: Should also mention that this is a Nvidia Quadro p5000 running display ports for each output
