  1. I want to know if you can drive a tank legally on the road in Missouri, and what states allow you to do so.
  2. Budget (including currency): $1500 USD Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Tripple A Games and VR in the coming year Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I own a i7-2600k, 16gb ram, GTX 980 on an ol' Asus p8p67. Hey guys, I know for most of you that's almost unthinkable but I spent the past 14 months under a rock deployed with little to no internet and I'd like some info on the new stuff out there... I'd like some suggestions on what's a solid and reliable MB/CPU/RAM/GPU combo. In game value speed and fluidity over graphic quality and I'll be using a single 27' 144hz monitor. I've build multiple pcs before and I'm good with the rest of the parts and accessories...I heard AMD is back in the game and is giving Intel a run for their money? lol... Thx in advance.
  3. The Enterprise being decommissioned marks the end of a very successful 50+ year experiment; as it was the very first nuclear powered carrier ever built. The introduction of a nuclear fuel source for the Navy's largest vessels has enabled these floating cities to operate for sustained periods of time without the constant need to be refueled while underway. Instead Nuclear carriers are typically refueled every 20-25 years; which is done typically at the ship yard that constructed the ship. This refueling process lasts 4 years because the entire ship is given a massive overhaul to update and modernize it's systems. During the Enterprise's career she played a role in the Cuban missile crises, launched the first strikes against Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan,Played a small bit part in Star Trek 4, and was even the flag ship of Naval legend Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz. Her Home port for most of her career was in NAS Alameda in California, but was eventually transferred in 2012 to NAS Norfolk in Virginia; where she performed her final deployment before being retired. After her final deployment she was retired and then transferred up river to Newport News Naval Shipyard to begin the de-fueling process. While she has spent the last few years in retirement her official decommissioning wasn't until just now. The remainder of the ship will be taken apart and the metal recycled for future use. The Navy does not plan on letting the Enterprise namesake end with her however. A new Gerald Ford class carrier with the name Enterprise has been approved and will be constructed at the Newport News Naval Shipyard, which is where the original Enterprise was constructed and will ultimately be laid to rest. Here is a local news outlet's reporting of it. http://www.13newsnow.com/news/military/navy-decommissions-legendary-uss-enterprise/392520625 Here is a picture of the Enterprise birthed in Norfolk. She is the third from the bottom ship with "65" written on the side.
  4. U.S. Marines set up and operated a first-of-its kind 3D printing lab downrange during a recent deployment to the Middle East. This is only the beginning, Navy will be experimenting onboard ships underway. No more waiting days for the one unique part that would cost 100x more because only one manufacturer makes it or waiting for it to be delivered to a remote location. https://www.defensetech.org/2017/09/27/inside-ripper-lab-marines-3d-print-drones-can-support-combat/
  5. I couldn't tell you if this is new or just the first time I saw it! All you have to do is submit proof of service and within 20 minutes they'll give you your free code. Feel free to let me know if this is old hat, but hopefully a Veteran or current member of our Armed Forces will be rewarded in a small way for their participation in our defense! It is US only.
  6. Several Microsoft employees, including Hololens engineers, call on Microsoft to drop the military contract that the company won in November 2018. They feel cheated by the company because they signed on to develop a tool for architects, car designers, surgeons, pianists etc, but are instead being seen as war profiteers because their work will be used to more easily kill people. Source 1 : Business Insider Source 2 : BBC News The entire letter is posted in the Business Insider article. However seeing as it's an open letter, I feel that it's okay to post the letter in its entirety here. The unfortunate reality is that someone WILL provide this kind of technology to the military. That being said, I'd be pretty pissed if I were in the developers' place too. Imagine creating something that has the potential to improve the world, only to see it being used to kill people. This could be seen as a follow-up on the topic that @AluminiumTech created here on December 4th. EDIT : replaced the image with something smaller.
  7. Came across an article this morning on Engadget and found it interesting, and a little bemusing as well. The US Military, specifically the Air Force, have been using the same computer since the 1970s that, with the use of 8-inch floppy disks, "could receive an order from the president to launch nuclear missiles from silos across the United States." According to C4ISRNET.com, Lt. Jason Rossi has announced that the old floppy disk method was replaced in June 2019 by a "highly secure solid state digital storage solution". Interestingly, Lt. Rossi defends the use of the ancient SACCS system, "used by US nuclear forces to send emergency action messages from command centres to field forces" by explaining that it is virtually un-hackable. "You can't hack something that doesn't have an IP address. It's a very unique system -- it is old and it is very good," Rossi said. "In 2016, the Government Accountability Office wrote that SACCS runs on an IBM Series/1 computer dating from the 1970s and that the Defense Department planned “to update its data storage solutions, port expansion processors, portable terminals, and desktop terminals by the end of fiscal year 2017,” but it’s unclear whether those upgrades have occurred." Personally, I find it fascinating that the military uses such a system to this day - although you wonder how much use it actually gets! Sources: C4ISRNET.com Engadget Techspot @LinusTech @Slick
  8. Introduction: The 37th Battalion is a military simulation unit on the PlayStation 4. We originated from Grand Theft Auto V under the name of “37th Infantry Battalion” and “15th Striker Brigade”. In the constant stages of the develop of our unit, we were always seeking a more realistic feel in the military simulation realm. We always kept an eye out for more military realistic games on the scale of Grand Theft Auto V, with no game really too much in sight; we’ve selected Battlefield 4. The ability to alter server settings, allows us to get close to military realism; at the same time allowing our divisions of aviation, armor, special forces, etc to remain open to our members. It’s safe to say, we are glad we have made the switch, and here to stay. With the announcement of Battlefield V, we are sure to see some familiar military units on the field. But, we aren’t stopping there! We are always going to be expanding into another military simulation game called; Insurgency Sandstorm. Do you have what it takes to become a member? How to Apply: Our process to apply to the Battalion is quite simple! (You must have Discord) At the end of this passage, you can click on our Discord link. Once you join our discord you will go to the “#unit-admissions” channel just under the text channel you join in, once you join the server. Our application is simple and to the point with general information about you; such as, PSN, DOB, ETC. Website: https://military-37.weebly.com/ Discord: https://discordapp.com/invite/pJRdVP6 Our Pilot Program: As a Battalion we are always looking to increase our member count. Therefore, we have instituted a program that allows us to do so. If you don’t have Battlefield 4, you don’t have to worry! By joining our Pilot Program, you aren’t required to get Battlefield 4 or participate in our events for that game. However, you get a jump start into our unit on Insurgency Sandstorm. To join our “Pilot Program” please follow the same procedures above. Arma 3: Not only are we on PlayStation 4, but now we are on PC! If you are wishing to join us on Arma 3, please message me on Steam at: [CO] Anthony Tyler. Or, you can join our Discord.
  9. Remember to not get political, this topic is not about the American Military, or any political parties. It is about Google and the employees protesting/resigning, and the implications of the use of AI for this purpose. Original Source: https://gizmodo.com/google-employees-resign-in-protest-against-pentagon-con-1825729300 First seen by me: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/05/google-employees-resign-in-protest-of-googlepentagon-drone-program/ Pre-article summary: Google and the American Military are working on "Project Maven", a military project to apply Google's image artificial intelligence know-how to drones and drone footage to help the military identify persons and/or places of interest, presumably to later capture or strike. (wasn't sure how to word this without being graphic). A previous letter of protest garnered over 3100 signatures (Ars reports up to 4000 at time of writing). Given how large Google is as a company this is probably a drop in the ocean, but appears to be gaining traction in media with stories from Gizmodo, Ars Technica, and The New York Times as well. A previous Ars article on the letter and issue pointed out how the letter invoked Google's "Don't Be Evil" motto. The Military claims that footage identified by "Project Maven" will not be solely acted upon but further examined. I do remember hearing (Can't remember where) that the American military is having a high turnover for drone operators due to what they're having to see and do in the role. So it might be possible that it may be looking at this project to ease staffing issues. Article summary: Google is still forging ahead, even after the letter of protest, so now employees have begun to quit. While "about a dozen" seems like an even smaller drop in the ocean to Google's 70,000 employees, it is quite a drastic action to take and I don't know if those employees will be able to get a reference from Google. Here are a few quotes from resigning employees from the article: The ICRAC (International Committee for Robot Arms Control) (about) has also released an open letter supporting the previous letter from google employees on the matter: https://www.icrac.net/open-letter-in-support-of-google-employees-and-tech-workers/ I recommend you read the whole letter but it has some powerful language and wise words of caution. The ICRAC claims to solely advocate against the use of robotics/AI in target selection and use of lethal force, and not against robotics in general. Personal Thoughts: Not sure what to add without getting political. I'm personally interested in AI and Robotics but agree that it's a field that should not be used lethally in war. Saving people in the battlefield is different from helping with lethal tasks, and in the rare cases the two are mutual is a task and decision still best left to humans. I've never heard of the ICRAC till today and am sceptical about them but the letter was well written. I do raise the question of our reliance on Google. For some this may be minimal, for others, extensive. I myself use google calendar due to my memory problems to remind me of appointments etc since it syncs to my tablet and phone. I rely on Gmail since in the past my website's mail server has been flaky so have ported most of my accounts over to it. I use chrome and regularly rely on the recent tabs/history to watch stuff on my tablet/phone in bed/hospital/doctors that I was previously watching on my PC or TV when I'm ill. So for me, it's be difficult to stop using Google in protest of this decision, but it's a thought I am considering and may look into alternatives that can do the same tasks. I'd like to hear what people think about protesting Google as users, and how that might be possible.
  10. Good day LTT forums peeps! I am working on a project for my brother whom is currently deployed with the U.S. Army to surprise him when he gets home sometime later this year. Here is the parts I am looking at getting for it at the moment. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/zj7D4q Went for the APU as I wanted something that would be upgrade-able in the future for not only him but his 7MO daughter (eventually) and wife to use. Currently the only parts I have bought is the NZXT S340 Elite. I am painting the case and have already had the glass laser engraved with the Military Police Insignia along with his Battalion number. Had a little bit of trouble getting the case from amazon as they don't ship it inside another box and only in the OEM box, so the first case was damaged. I don't know what it is with Amazon and not shipping stuff extra packed, I know when I bought my MasterCase Maker 5T from amazon it came double boxed...Anywho.. Ended up getting 20$ in amazon credit which was nice, but delayed the start of the project. I work for Fastenal, we sell nuts, bolts, paints, safety stuff ect... so I have ended up getting my paint from work. At this moment the theme is going to be green, gold, and black. The plan right now is to get a paint booth setup. Having to wait for paycheck before I can get that going, however I do have the case torn down to bare chassis with everything labeled in bags for easy reassembly. I did do a test spray of the yellow and green just to see it and I think it is going to turn out great once I get it all done! Last week 2-13-2018 I also got the glass engraved. A few minor blemish's did pop up, we ended up going back over the glass twice to hit everything. (Not shown with the extra passes) If anyone has any suggestions for me in terms of parts, or anything I should look at doing let me know what you think! I am planning on doing the front shroud in green, the cable hide that goes across the back in green, the majority of the case in a gloss black. Any of the small IO plates will be yellow as well. The back panel will also be green with the top, bottom, and back panels becoming black. I will be using enamel paint from a can, alone with obviously a primer which is currently not shown. I will be making the paint booth that Linus built sometime last year with potentially some modifications to allow a co-worker to use it as well. I will be sure to update you all when I get more progress underway. Thanks for reading up to this point, ccm1092.
  11. A really good example of why less is more. Fitness app Strava published a map showing user activity around the world between 2015 and 2017. Obviously, North America and Europe are lit up like a bonfire, but several people noticed several strange patches in the Middle East, cross checking revealed that many of them were known U.S. Military Bases. However it also appears to reveal the location of several secret outposts that have either been revealed to exist, but it's exact location never disclosed, or bases which people have speculated the US has, but the government has never confirmed/denied. While the data is not live, it does reveal obvious trends as to where the soldiers are located. In several cases, they show up on the map as long straight lines, likely indicating a jogging track commonly used by soldiers, potentially giving their enemies an indication where to target the soldiers when they are out for their morning jog, possibly unarmed. Link to Map https://labs.strava.com/heatmap/ Source The Washington Post EDIT: I figured it's possible they might take the site offline, so I wanted to include a screenshot of it. Mods please note, it's U.S. only and it shouldn't have enough resolution to include anything that might incur liability.
  12. https://www.military.com/daily-news/2020/02/24/if-its-not-ethical-they-wont-field-it-pentagon-release-new-ai-guidelines.html?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1582596662 Air Force Lt General Shanahan, Director of the JAIC (Department of Defense) has issued a statement regarding the United States use of artificial intelligence in warfare. Shanahan said in a statement that "We will not field an algorithm until we are convinced it meets our level of performance and our standard, and if we don't believe it can be used in a safe and ethical manner, we won't field it." In other statements to reporters, Shanahan made comments that the use of AI by Russia and China raise serious concerns about human rights, ethics, and international relations. He also made comments that he does not want AI to be used by the military to track citizens as is practice in China. The Pentagon has pushed for more mandates regarding AI in recent years, but concerns that those guidelines won't be recognized internationally are there as well. Shanahan also made references to a speech made by Russian President Putin in 2017, saying "whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world." My opinion: Contrary to popular belief, there are rules to warfare. For example, you cannot target any medical facility or transport. I think the move to a more regulated atmosphere is a good thing. AI already brings up a lot of ethics questions, but it is much more hotly disputed in terms of how it could be used in war. I believe that AI should be used in war to lower the amount of casualties, but it definitely needs to be regulated by an objective human entity and undergo regular ethics testing. SkyNet, Hal 9000, and Ultron are good examples of what could go wrong in the movies, but I think with the right infrastructure in place, there could be a better system than just blowing each other up. Any AI that is designed and is functional should be under heavy watch and have a kill switch. I think that this is a good move and Shanahan is probably the best guy to help pave the way. He's made comments before on this and is one of the advisors for this kind of subject to the CIA and White House. Obviously, we are not to the point yet that we have an AI capable of thinking on it's own completely, but it is good to think ahead.
  13. So, yesterday I ordered an original WW2 M40 German helmet on eBay. It's in a pretty bad condition but looks like everything can be fixed. There is a crack on the top and the whole helmet has a very strange texture (I assume it might have caught on fire). I plan to solder the top, polish and paint the whole helmet. Do you have any advice on soldering, polishing or painting?
  14. Alright so I'm currently taking computer science and I'm having trouble finding an internship although I know that I have zero experience and not much else it's been tough going just moved to Colorado for college can't afford living expenses down here but I love it so much down here I'm from south Dakota . I've been seriously considering joining the guards I mean it can't hurt my future right? I meet all the requirements and yes I need to get in shape before I go to basic but that's pretty much it anyone else have any input? My mos would be with computers also
  15. Hey Guys! This is my 4th or 5th PC build, but first ever build log! Here are some photos of the finished product!! Please check out the build log and I hope you enjoy!! BUILD LOG Pretty excited to get to work, but things will be slow for about a month, then it will ramp up really fast and be VERY pic heavy, hope that's ok? Theme The theme of this build is a sort of dieselpunk/ww2 military. I want it to be practical, and reversible (as in, mostly just a case mod, not modding components so I can swap them into a different case if I ever want to. COMPONENTS - 3930k @4.5ghz - Sabertooth x79 - GTX 980 ti - EK Plexi blocks for GPU and CPU - Corsair AIR 540 case - Full Copper Hardline Loop! - etc... The computer has been built and running a basic watercooling set up for about a year now, but im finally bored enough waiting for my HTC Vive to arrive, that I want something cool to do. And I may or may not want to show off my building skills to my father in law when I take my computer to their house for VR Demos... Here is the computer in its current form... And here are some basic renders I did in sketchup of the loop... First little part of the build... Turning a harbor freight multimeter into an external temp display... It uses a little watercooling inline temp sensor I got forever ago but never had a good place for, so I thought I'd mount it on the outside. I remember seeing something very similar a while ago but can't find it now. Original Multimeter I got free with some tape.. lol. ' As a bonus, I cut the original power cables and soldered them to the probe connections board that I broke off, so I can use the original props for power (I'll work something out for the signal cable later) Cut a new slot for my screen, added some card stock to blend the shape and then used some modeling putty to build a bit of a lip, making it all look standard (ish) First coat of paint, and some weathering done! (lots more to go) Thanks for checking it out, guys! Really looking forward to how this will go! Lots of crazy ideas in my head and I'm really looking forward to sharing them with you, I've meant to do this for years and finally have a chance!!
  16. Hey, Everyone, I am currently an Army AIT student living in a small barracks room. Our policy restricts the size of our tv/monitors down to 24'' (Debatably). Now I am used to playing on a 50'' plasma back home which is alright. I am a goon for eye candy. I can play Xbox One and ps4 games here. So what I was thinking is either getting a decent gaming monitor, a projector, or a new gaming laptop. I am planning on playing games like fallout 4, bo3, battle front, gta5, skyrim, and games similar to these. Again, being a goon for eye candy I want the best picture available and to be able to play games at 60 fps in at least fhd with maxed settings. I do play skyrim modded too, so if I was to get a laptop, it would have to be able to crank out the beef for that. Any input or ideas for my situation would be appreciated, and I'll answer any questions that I can. Thanks!
  17. Hi guys, I believe we have a few soldiers here, and if not that, people who know the answers to my questions. I will be brief, or try to be I mean: Question 1) What are the requirements to join the army as a female with a GED (no college credits)? Like what do I need to bring or have beyond the GED, ID and birth certificate? Question 2) What health issues will get you rejected beyond the most obvious? Will having a disorder like dyslexia get you rejected? Question 3) What is MOS, MEPS, ASVAB, AFQT, and TAPAS? What is a tier II applicant? Question 4) what should be some things I should ask the recruiter? What are some things I should read to help me learn more? Question 5) people say to know what you want out of the military; what does this mean exactly? Question 6) what should I expect at the physical examination? To do and or provide for them? Will being 4’11 be an automatic disqualification? *more questions may arise with answers. I am seriously considering joining the military for various reasons. I am very sick of staying in one place. I want to see other countries, I want to help people, I want to go to college to make something out of myself (I want to be a qualified Linguist!) and I want to serve my country like my father, grandfathers, brothers and uncles have. I have been watching a lot of Army videos and it has been increasing my desire to join with each video, especially when I saw the video on Linguists and their roles in the military. If anyone with far more knowledge of this can help me out, I would appreciate it. Thanks! *the reason I ask here and not a recruitment office is because I don't live anywhere close to one. The closest one is like four hours away and I think knowing before I go may improve my chances! mod edit, alpenwasser Guys, this thread is about OP's question, not about whether or not the US military is a global murder racket, please keep things on point. Thanks.
  18. So, Obama just gave a speech about this. Source: http://fox59.com/2014/09/16/u-s-ramping-up-ebola-effort-as-obama-heads-to-cdc/ Now, tinfoil hat time. This gives me a great deal of concern because of the fact that sending that many people into an active biological infection hotzone, goes against all common sense. What would make sense is to quarantine the area, and send in as few people as possible to deal with the issue as best they can. The reason being that this disease is highly infectious, and it stands to reason that the more people you send into said hotzone, the greater the chance is the one of them (or many) could themselves become infected. Ebola is barely treatable, and then there is this little tidbit from wikipedia. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebola_virus_disease Regardless of whether or not we treat the troops once they become infected, even if the treatment is successful, the "cured" survivors remain capable of infecting someone, for up to 3 months after the treatment has been given. There is also some evidence that this occurs in a females vaginal fluids as well. Not convinced? Source: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/ebola-doctor-reveals-how-infected-americans-were-cured/ I know the Scientific American article might say that "It's important when looking at epidemiological investigations that no one has been able to show people shedding these nuclear materials as a source of infection after they are discharged". I just really hope they are right, I really do. Because 3000 people is a lot of people to send into a hotzone, and simply hope they don't get infected, and hope that they don't remain infectious via sexual fluids afterwards. Never mind that according to news radio reports, we don't currently have much information regarding what protective measures the military will take. Never mind that we aren't sending any of our Navy Hospital ships, despite Liberia being a coastal country. Don't get me wrong, I am all for sending aid to help those poor people, Ebola is no joking matter. But this just seems like the most insanely stupid thing we can do, even though the "troops send will not be giving direct care, and will only be offering logistical and engineering support to health care professionals", which at first seems like a good idea, until you realize that people are still being infected, including healthcare workers, AND the possibility of the troops taking the threat less seriously because "well we aren't around the patients". Sometimes, I really really hope I am crazy......... But like I said, I'm all for giving them aid, this just seems like an insanely stupid way to go about it. Go ahead and tear me apart, call me a conspiracy theorist, please, give me links that can assure me that this doesn't seem as stupidly, insanely dangerous as it seems.
  19. Good Evening I am planning to mod my case with cold cathodes and fans. I want to control them using a switch bay that i will order. I was wondering how to actually do them? ---Links--- http://www.frozencpu.com/products/7673/cpa-245/Lian_Li_Military_Switch_Baybus_-_Multi_Port_-_Black.html?tl=g1c143&id=hLaZvqT3#blank http://www.frozencpu.com/products/2989/lit-20/12_Cold_Cathode_Kit_Dual_Ready_-_Blue.html http://www.frozencpu.com/products/9303/fan-575/Cooler_Master_SickleFlow_120x25mm_Super_Silent_Fan_-_Blue_LED_-_R4-L2R-20AC-GP.html Thanks Guys, Happy Modding!
  20. I've been on the fence as to what mouse I should pull the trigger on, and I've been specifically looking at two mice: the Corsair M65 and the Func MS-3. I was thinking about the M65 mainly because it will match my case (I have a military green C70 and the military green M65 would go perfect with it), and also because I've heard it was a pretty decent mouse. I was looking at the MS-3 too because it looks different, comfortable, and is also supposed to be a good mouse for the price. They both have a sniper button, which looks interesting, but I'm not sure how practical it would actually be. I would really like to hear about the mice from anyone who has either of them. I'm also open to suggestions for other mice too! Thanks in advance!
  21. Hi everyone, I am about to liquid cool my slightly-modded military themed C70 Vengeance case and I thought I'd do some before and after stuff. It's a work in progress and I would love some advice from you guys! *Note the H100i was sent for RMA and will soon be my brother's (I'm lucky I kept the stock cooler!). First thing I did was change out the factory side window for something acrylic and added some bullet holes: I then modded the reset button to open my DVD drive: Here's a couple interior shots:
