  1. Hi all, So I just bought a Dell PowerEdge R510 and I'm gonna use it as a media and file server. Only problem is I don't really know what OS to put on it.. I'm quite new to the homlab world. These are my needs: I need to be able to create different storage pools; 1 pool RAID 1 with 2 drives for general storage (VMs, ISOs, ...), doesn't need to be a shared folder 1 pool RAID 6 with 5 drives for all my media, needs to connect to my PC (SMB share) and should also be accessible by a Windows Server VM and Plex VM/docker/plugin 1 or 2 pools with seperate disks for download; Sonarr, Lidarr,... also SMB share so I can access it. I looked at Unraid but that doesn't seem to be what I need (different pools), maybe FreeNAS (but does it handle Windows Server VM well?), ESXi is top choice right now; but what to do with my disks; do I pass them through to the VMs? Like I said I'm only a beginner when it comes to this kind of stuff, gotta start somewhere! Thanks
  2. Hey guys, i have some dilemma here. I want to buy a NAS, specifically Synology DS220j and I want to use it to store all my data, photos and family videos. I know and I am using Plex Media Server on my laptop to cast videos and films to my chromecast and it works well, but I want to store all media on NAS and then cast it to chromecast. The problem is: I heard about transcoding media to run Plex Server and it requires more advanced NAS hardware to run. I think the model I choose is not powerful enough to transcode the videos in 1080p. What happend if I buy this NAS, fill it with my files, videos and than I cast this files from NAS to Chromecast? Can this NAS handle this process? Most of my family videos are 1080p H264 with bitrate aroud 5 to 10Mbps. Mostly I will be casting only in my home in 1080p (maybe 4K in the future), so I don't need to run it outside of my house. Thanks for your replies and tips.
  3. Hi everyone, hoping you can help advice before any money gets wasted The plan is to setup a Nas on a vessel accross 5 floors with up to 40 people at a time able to access. Everyone needs to be able to access wirelessly using either phone/tablet or laptop. Ideally downloading files to watch rather than streaming to keep the network fast. --The equipment I have looked at is: Terramaster F5-221 5 bay NAS, cloud storage, intel dual core 2.0ghz, plex media storage, network storage. -- 5x 8tb ironwolf NAS hard drives -- 5x ubiquiti network router, 2.4/5ghz, 450/1300mbps 120m range, Poe injector So the plan would be to have the NAS drive setup with a desktop computer, and a router on each floor conneceted by ethernet. 1. Is the hardware above adequate for this project 2. Which Nas software should we go with? (Windows would be preferred operating system just for ease of use) 3. Is plex the best solution for media access via the routers? 4. Is there any benefit to going with a drive such as an ironwolf over say a barracuda or mixing in ssd? Thanks for any help you can provide. Never setup anything like this before but an avid watcher of linus. I did suggest 100 bluetooth speakers but the guys on the vessel want video to haha Nedders
  4. Buy "Starting a Business for Dummies" book on Amazon: http://geni.us/eJl7Y8Y Working at Linus Media Group seems like a ton of fun... but is it really? Let's ask the crew and see what they think...
  5. I am transferring my plex media server to a different installation of Ubuntu on the same system. I am having trouble with the transfer however. I have followed the Plex guide step by step but for some reason Linux won't recreate the plexmediaserver directory for me to put the server data in. I installed the plex media server application from the Ubuntu software and ran it but it still won't create the directory. If anybody has any experience with this and has any ideas i'd love to here them. Thanks in advance
  6. I have asus rog gl502vt with i7 6700hq , gtx 970 m 3gb ,12 gb ram . i want to turn my old laptop to a media server . any guide i have to follow for best experience. thank you in advance.
  7. Hello everybody! I am planning to purchase an Odroid H2 x86 SBC, I will eventually use it as a Media Server and possibly some kind of personal NAS, with the capabilities of Emulating old consoles if needed too. But that's only after I get my new rig some time during the year 2020 for gaming. Before that, I was wondering if the board is powerful enough to run my favourite two competitive games: League of Legends and CS:GO. It is an x86 board, and thus should run Windows 10 no problem. It supports DDR4 RAM, and has Intel J4105 CPU with Intel UHD600 integrated gfx. Is it better to run the heavy Win10 and game through that, or maybe run Linux on it and run Wine/Lutris through it? It's a 300€ SBC with all the bits and pieces ordered with it, and I may just hold off ordering it yet if it can't run those two. Any thoughts about the Odroid H2 here? Any suggestions for what I should do here? Should I for example pour some more cash in this, and buy an Intel NUC instead?
  8. Hey there guys! This here is my first entry on the forum so if I’m doing something wrong please tell me Now my question: I’m planning to sell my PS3 + games to cuz I’m simply not using it anymore. But I still have a fairly large collection of Blu Rays that I’m still watching with the PS acting as my current player. Tho I’m not sure wether to replace it with an external Blu ray player that connects directly to the TV or just get an external Burner/Player that connects to my PC as they’re way cheaper and my PC is connected to the TV anyways. So are there any disadvantages in using a pc-bound player or can I save the extra 100€ or so? Cuz I can’t really find anything why TV-bound player have any advantage whatsoever. Thanks in advance PS: 4K is not a necessity, would be nice to have tho.
  9. Doing my head in, I am new to Free NAS, so learning as I go, I followed all the steps to gt it up and running. I need this solved ASAP.Basically this is where I am at, I created a volume just fine, created a share just fine, got up to the point of adding to Windows 10,... Win 10 can find it for some reason under \\IPADDRESS\homes, however gives me an error message, before it gave me an error code of which I have forgotten but now after verifying and changing many things within Windows, I am convinced that something isn't right in the FREE NAS itself but I have no clue where to go. The error message is basically: IPADDRESS\homes not available, check admin for permissions... if you got access etc, Device attached to the system is not functioning... Please help!
  10. So I am moving to an area where internet is extremely challenged. Challenged to the point where it would be impossible to stream my Plex outside of the house. So an idea I had was to set up a high powered WiFi antenna so that I can direct play within the town. Ideally I would like to also let my friends/family be able to direct play too. Basically I don’t even know where to begin to look in to the possibilities, requirements and limitations. If you want to give me great in depth info, I am all for it. I know that is asking a lot so if anyone can just point me in the right direction and I can research on my own. My initial concerns: range/stability network requirements for multiple users cpu requirements proper raid setup Every time i google anything it directs me to full on commercial setups which is understandable and I don’t expect this idea to be cheap. I just don’t know what is appropriate for my idea vs worthless/overkill.
  11. Heysan To Yall here from Denmark I have been watching a bunch of your video's on how to get a good NAS/Server/Cloud Solution. And comming from a home that burned down in 2006, Im sort of getting to a point, where data security and backup is becomming essential. I have approx 15 TB of data I need secured at this time. So Im looking for a total solution that allows me to do the following: - Work from my home laptop localy, which auto or manual backs up to 2 locations. 1 local server fx my old Synology DS414 or something new... (it currently has 4 x 4tb disks, raided in synologys ovn raid setup) 1 cloud server (currently Dropbox, but space is far from whats needed). Would like something with cheap backup space for 40 TB. Have been looking at something like crashplan which currently has no limit. And the one device could be my synology server or which ever new device we build Both must be secured or even encrypted, so I dont loose all to identity theft or hackers!!!! I have seen multible attacks on the synology server, once it goes online, which kind of scares me. Most seem to originate from China or india, but could be masked IP adress. - Filetypes or folders I need to access remotely and have backup of: Documents (i write a lot), Videos from training and coaching sessions, My digital audio library, Digitised DVD's, Workfiles like powerpoints etc, Software install files, game install files and maybe a steam and origin library (dont play much, so not essential), backup files from acronis, Our life in film photo and video library (note that all events have a seperate folder/tree struckture, which I need to keep) - Option to remove the local copy, but still have the 2 backups (to free up local space on phone or laptop for other new stuff) - Account management (username and password/single signon) for Direct and remote access from any device android, windows, browser or ios based - Content streamable to any device. Fx via app? - The Local server can be remote booted and turned off to save power, and keep harddrives working for longer. (this server will normaly only be on a few times pr month, when emptiyng phones for pictures or when access to files are needed) - Good pictureviewer. Fx Synology has a photostation, that allows to view photos. I cant however get it to work with my filestructure, and I want to be able to allow access to specific pictures and videos from that tree, to certain family member groups, and keep the rest private. Rights will be selected upon upload. So my usecase scenarios i want to cover: 1. A hacker takes control of one of our 3 computers, because we clicked one of the clickbaits. We flush the device, and puts the latest acronis image on the device to completely restore all. 2. Latest version of the acronis backup was contaminated and system is taken over again or infected. We flush device and revert to one of the previous images. (normaly I keep a max of 3, but I was told there is such software that only backups 1 original image, and then adds changes to the next backups. Can acronis do this, or is there another? 3. We take a picture or video. Once on wifi, the files are auto synced to server. My only issue here is how to sync into my file structure. Folder is called "2019 08 14 - Event name" or "2019 08 14-23 - Event Period name" 4. One of the phones is full, and we are not shure all pictures have been synced to server. I want to see all files individual syncstatus like fx dropbox shows. Then I chose remove from this device only. Pictures are now safe on the server and in the cloud backup (after backupplan has been completed) 5. One of the images is a good one, i want to share with "family member group". We click picture from any device, and select share with... and then select the group. Group can now se that picture and only that one, as well as the other individual selected pictures or videos. 6. Family Member group log on to app/cloud/other and can now se/download, maybe even comment each picture. They can also send them to a photoframe, that slideshows all shared pictures from all familiy members. 7. Other family members like our new solution, and wants to use our setup for their files. We create a useraccount and a folder just for them and admin. They can now also share with the same family member group. Or maybe even connect their own device like apples icloud folder for family or similar. They might also want to backup documents or other stuff. But this is only bonus feature, as most of this will need some sort of privacy filter. 8. I do a training/coaching session and safes pictures, audio or event videos from the session on my laptop. Folder autosyncs to server, and I now select share with trainee/coachee. They now have useraccount which allows access to those files. I dont want server to stay running, so a temp storage place like dropbox, might be a good way to have a temporary storage place. 9. We want to watch a movie. We start the server remotely via app or other? We select movie and play to chromecast, which is attached to home media center. 10. We have sonos in the house and have yousee music service attached. But a number or playlist is not possible to play, as yousee dont have all music in the world, but we have it on cd. We start server, move numbers to fx dropbox playlist folder, which sonos can access. Then we play music like always. 11. Same as before, but this time we are at a party, where I want to share some god video or music number. I remote boot the server and select number, then streams online to whichever system is working there. Either via my phone to jackstick or to chromecast. 12. Its time for the weekly backup. Server auto boots, and syncs the local databackup files. Server shuts off automaticly once backup is complete. It also syncronise all photos/videos/docs etc, from all devices added to the storage. Before shutdown, data is send to cloudservice backup service as well. 13. A picture was in the wrong folder. Its moved on any device to the right folder, and this change is autosynced, as soon as the server goes online again. 14. Server hardware fails. CPU fx. Part is replaced or disks moved to new server setup. Settings are also backed up, so even though the new server might have better options, old settings can still be reused. 14.1 Disk fails. Alert is send via email or sms, once home, I replace damaged disk, and server initialise the new disk and recreates the raid volume. In case multible disks fail, they are also changed, and backup from cloud is flashed onto the new array. 15. I want to share just one or a few large files. A share link is send via email, which grants read right to that file alone. Again a service like dropbox could work for this, however space in the dropbox is very expensive to expand beyond 1 tb. 16. Electric bill is to high this month. Backupplan is changed to once pr 14 days. just to save a little extra. 17. Once a year al the old boys come together for a LAN party. Server is booted and all game libraries can now be shared by others. 18. Cloud is hacked/deleted/bombed by terrorists or other. Local server is attached to new backup service, and new deal is made for backup. There are probably many more scenarios I want to cover. However my biggest concern is keeping the monthly cost down. - Electric bill - New disks every 3 years (which is the normal runtime for a servergrade harddrive i supose) is to much. Must last longer. Thus not needed to be on all the time. - Cloud service bill must be low. 10$ pr month is okay, but more than that will screw this private server backup initiative up. Today i use - Free dropbox with 12 gb space for file sync. (have been getting 50GB promocodes with new phones, but stil space runs out to fast) - 6 local harddrives attached to usb hub, powered on one every 14 days, to create a manual backup - Synology server has been taken offline. File management and transfer speeds are anoyingly slow and does not work like windows file explorer. Copy paste fx, or search for dublicates is a nightmare. Much easier from the 6 local harddrives. - 1x 4 tb external harddrive has the second backup of all family photos and most important documents. All other data, only has one copy on the 6 harddrives, unless copied to one of the laptops. - We have a private group chat on facebook for sharing the few family photos. (i hate this solution, as I dont know what facebook does with our photos, and takes years If you want to go back more than a few weeks) This is just for my family and I as a private solution. Training/coaching sessions is a hobby, which I dont charge for, as I have a fulltime job selling patrolingsystem to manned guarding industry. I do keep my workfiles in dropbox for easy sync, but i am very worried dropbox is not safe enough. Not even for private photos. I really hope to get some good feedback on how to create such a solution in the best cheapest way possible, maybee even se a comparisson chart, comparing lifecycle vs cost for always online server, vs a server that turns off, for all costs like disks needed, electric bill, hardware failiure after multible years of running, hardware upgrades etc. Hope this might also inspire a god video on the subject "Family shared photo and video NAS + Backup cloud service" Thanks for reading Benjamin K. 12. Hi guys I have an older HP wireless keyboard. It's really nice to type on and it works very well, my problem is that I want to use the media keys on it, but they don't work on Windows 10. Only the volume knob and mute button work. It has integrated music, browser, media skip,play/pause,disc drive open, email and more buttons. These are all really useful and convenient, but I can't get them to work. Do any of you know how to make these buttons work? Thanks for your help.
  13. My problem: Even with all recommended "Trade quality for performance" options selected and fairly tame filtering I still get low performance (~15 fps when I should be getting at the very least 24). I really doubt a setup this old and widely-used takes hardware this good to run minimally well. My bulid: ~2-3 year old ASUS gaming laptop with MPC-HC with LAV, madVR, CCCP, XYsubfilter and ASSmod (because they don't always both work) i7-6700HQ @ 2.60 GHz GTX 960 (4 GB) 16 GB DDR4 RAM 1TB HDD and 128GB SSD Windows 10
  14. [Windows 10] I have the Corsair K95 Platinum keyboard which has media keys, and the Pause/Play key is the one I'll focus on. This all started once I rebooted a few days ago, most likely a Windows update. If I have a Youtube video or Twitch stream open in one of my Chrome tabs, even if not active, will take priority of my media key instead of Spotify. No clue how to fix it
  15. IPlease help me I am looking for a guide for creating my own windows 10 ISO with preinstalled programs
  16. Hi all. I need a recommendation to set up a media center in a conference/showroom. We bought a 55" Hisense Smart TV, that has a DNLA connection but since most of us in the office only had Macs and IOS devices we couldn't get to connect anything over wireless since, for as far as I know apple devices support only their own wireless protocols to wirelessly share data. But that's not the point, I cannot be dependent on someone's tablet or phone to show stuff. This TV needs to show videos and photos in loop, making different mixed video and photo playlists for different occasions, for clients visiting or for an industrial fair, with the functionality of showing PDF depliant and Power Point presentation too with a simple media center UI instead of having a PC with windows and all the hassle of maintaining updates, licenses, antivirus and stuff. It would be convenient for the media center to have network functionality too to remotely update its contents without having to transfer stuff over USB sticks again. Can you recommend me a could of good choices please?
  17. Hey everyone, New to the forum but not to building PCs. I'm looking at getting the parts necessary to build a central server for our small media business for members to work from and store projects. So far I have zero experience in building servers and therefore don't exactly know what is fully required for our current workload so pretty much guessing. Currently we actually use several home-style NAS drives which is not ideal at all! We have a small video department that will be increasingly using 4K footage and ideally we'd like everyone to be able to work from and store files on this server. At the most there will be about 10x voice-over editors (very light audio workload using Reaper along with streaming motion capture footage from the server when necessary), 4 video editors/vfx, 3 sound designers (relatively light audio load unless working with a video) and 2 composers (mainly using locally stored sample libraries on ssds but putting project files on server). It'd be cool to have at least a few people working at 10GbE speeds. I'm basically looking for advice to see if I've gone either way overboard or not overboard enough, or that this plan will even work at all?! Budget would be hopefully under £7000 Here's what I'm looking at: Case https://www.servercase.co.uk/shop/server-cases/rackmount/4u-chassis/4u-server-case-w-24x-35-hot-swappable-satasas-drive-bays-6gbs-minisas-550m-deep-sc-4324s/ Motherboard https://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-ws-c621e-sage-intel-c621-s-3647-x2-ddr4-sata3-quad-u2-m2-4-way-sli-crossfire-dual-gbe-usb-31-ap?v=c 2x Processors (do I need more powerful?) https://www.scan.co.uk/products/intel-xeon-silver-4108-s3647-skylake-sp-8-cores-16-threads-18ghz-21ghz-turbo-11mb-cache-85w-retail?v=c 2x CPU coolers https://www.scan.co.uk/products/dynatron-b13-intel-s3647-square-ilm-al-cu-4x-direct-contact-heatpipes-60mm-dual-ball-bearing-fan-205?v=c 128gb RAM (need more? less? Any advice or help would be super appreciated as this would be my first step away from gaming stuff to servers and networking Cheers Harry
  18. So I have a giant problem; when ever I view any sort of video, home video, movie maker, YouTube or even YouTube Ads, I get a thin red line spanning the ENTIRE video vertically. It is incresdibly annoying, how can I fix it? I don't have a graphics card; I use an AMD a1o 7700k APU
  19. Hi there, I have been following the LTT channel for while now but never took a tour on the forums. Now that I plan to replace/upgrade my file storage at home I think this is a good time to join the board I want to replace the way I store all my files. Currently I have a synology NAS for my "sensitive" data and my media are stored on several external HDD which I connect to my Linux DVB-S2 receiver. Not very efficient! I was hopping that the community could help me to select the best hardware I'll need. Here are a few thoughts: - I want the case to be rack mount, if possible with hot swap bays because it looks badass but it has to stay on the budget. - The same machine will be use to store my "critical" data and as Plex Media Server - My critical data aren't big files: it is pdf, text documents, spread sheets, some photos. For now it is only 300GB and it represents 12 years of work. For that part I thought that two 1TB drives mounted in RAID1 would be a great idea. Those data are also backed up in a remote location. - For my media I thought about four 4TB drives mounted in RAID10, not really sure about that... - Possibility to extend the storage capacity in the future. Could you give some tips about the hardware I should buy? I think that 500€, yes I'm European, should be the max budget (storage not included). What I currently have at home: nothing too good: - Asus P5Q-Pro - Intel Q6600 - Some DDR2 memory! - Some SSDs that I'll use for the os (Freenas or unraid?) Yeah, haven't followed the technology for some years now Well, I think this is it. Thank you for considering this and sorry for the eventual bad writing in English
  20. Hello LTT form, i just recently made my own unraid server and got plex, every thing worked fine tell i bought plex pass and started to add my family to the acc. well long story short when ever they watch on there phones or TV my plex server starts to add random clips from the movies and add them in as a media file. i've attached screen shot of what is happening, any help would be great.
  21. So i am planning a new server build for my home, now most of the parts are going to be used server hardware from refreshes which can be sourced via websites such as eBay. Now the budget will be around £350-400 without HDD's; no need for peripherals as it will be done via remote access. Now from what i have seen i can pick up an E3 Xeon for around £60 - £80 (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-T3500-Precision-Intel-Xeon-Quad-Six-Core-Tower-PC-Customisable-Windows-10/122653277587?hash=item1c8eb47d93:m:mFMGNPj7DuutsSKTLA-JhFg) Looking at up to £100 for a decent case with a large amount of 3.5" 6-10 spaces so i can have a decent amount of hard drives. motherboard up to £80 PSU - £40 ram - £20 no need for a GPU as i have a spare lieing around. I was looking at pre builds or refubs i can salvage for parts as that seems to be much more cost effective, but anyone has any pre built servers then please post them. I was looking at cases which were towers rather than server cases as a computer cases would be much easier to store for me and quieter also. Thanks for reading
  22. All these NAS units with ARM chips never perform as they should (that I have experienced anyway). It would be cool for Linus to build one to these [very loose] specs, if he hasn't already 1) Small form factor. (micro-ATX??) On-board graphics would be fine for initial setup. Console-ish or similar, for placement in or near the entertainment center. 2) Intel I5 ( that should do, for trancoding) 3) Quiet as possible. 4) Gigabit networking 5) RAID redundancy ( 3TB data storage minimum, upgradeable of course) I could get by without hot swap, but would be nice, if case permits. 6) Remote interface ( no add'l monitor or keyboard needed after setup) 7) M2/SSD storage for the OS and PLEX
  23. Ok so I want to make a pc that is very power efficient has some led lighting and will only be used for loss and storing files, any ideas for under 175pounds as I'm on a tight budget
  24. So..... I was trying to use one of the new features of Plex to record live TV on my UNRAID server. I installed this device (i reference device a lot meaning this) which i got ages ago in to my server. Some more photos of the server can be seen here. Anyway when i first installed it, i did it with the server running as its only USB, so what could go wrong. Any way i pulled out my phone to check that the server had detected it in some way. And the first thing i notice is that the parody drive has gone missing. i this point i though that i may have nudged the server and one of the Sata connectors had come out. So i powered down the server, reinstalled the the drive and rebooted The server booted, to the point of the drives spinning up, but the web UI had not loaded I brought a monitor to the server and attached it this enabled me to restart the web UI Upon accessing the interface, the top Said "USB failure" and the key for the OS was no longer valid. I rebooted again, this time the server would load the OS. (Device still installed) The USB never appeared in the boot menu, even though it was plugged in After another restart the USB appeared in the boot menu (Device still installed) So i attempted to boot from it, but it just got stuck on BZroot, when the server is loading At this point i installed a new copy of unraid on that USB to no avail. I tried a new USB to no avail i even put in a new USB card (with fresh install) so that the boot media was not on the same set usbs. this was to no avail. So at this point i removed that device, and it still would not boot. I had to do a fresh install of UNRAID before it would boot. What possibly could be causing this device to interfere with the boot media so much? This device appears to work correctly on my windows 10 PC, and does not cause any of these strange symptoms
  25. Long story short, I'm part of both a photography and media group in my university and I've been contemplating a gimbal for a long time (a smartphone gimbal as my phone records higher resolution video than my a6000, even though the latter should be better at handling light) But the initial $299 price of DJI's Osmo Mobile 1 was a bit of a turn off. However, the new Osmo's price tag makes it compelling. Here's the dillema. It won't arrive until March and over here, it'll be closer to the $159 mark. Meanwhile, I've been looking at the Zhiyun Smooth Q, another gimbal similar to the Osmo 2 but at $100 (and less with coupons). What would you suggest?
