So, I'm planning to build a media PC for my home, and I have two options in mind. A Ryzen 5 3400g with the stock Vega 11 iGPU, or a Ryzen 3100 with a GT 1030(GDDR5 2GB edition). In my country these two configs cost the same(about 14000 INR). Which one should I opt for? The build will be mATX, so size isn't much of a constraint. The 3100 combo will have more net performance, but I was wondering if the increased power draw(CPU+dGPU vs APU) would be worth it. Thanks for your help!

Hello, I'm looking for a media PC that supports 4K UHD out and allows me to decode 4K video files from my NAS, and decode the stream from steam in home streaming. Size isn't a factor, cost is. Recently moved into a larger space and my TV is no longer right next to my PC. I'm guessing machines like this have gotten quite affordable, but I'm very much out of the loop. Any suggestions, and maybe things I should look out for? Thank you

I'm looking for help getting started building a NAS / Media PC / Server for myself. You can find old workstation / server towers pretty reasonably on eBay Server Xeon E5620 and inspired by the latest eBay PC build you can pick up a few Hard Drives as well. I really know very little about Xeon SKU's and the actual amount of compute power a NAS / Media PC would need. I'm beginning to collect Blu-rays of TV shows and movies because I want the deleted scenes, special features, the de-specialized versions of Star Wars, etc. and I want to be able to play those on my TV either through HDMI or Nvidia Shield TV. I also don't know if I will need to have virtual machines to handle the file server / NAS side separately from a media center instance. I've heard of Plex and Kodi but I have not looked into actually setting them up. I also don't know if I would want a cheap 100-200GB SSD as a cache for dumping files to the NAS. If any Linus-es are reading this seems like a really cool build guide that would be right up your alley and some quick googling did not immediately yield any good tutorials. The closest I got was this one from Tested but I would certainly be interested in a second Canadian opinion before I get too far invested. EDIT: After reading the full article this is actually a pretty good starting point but I would welcome any other opinions especially on the Xeon E5620.

So I just built an always on Media PC to run my media server here are the specs ryzen 3 2200g Asus Prime B450M-A Corsair Vengeance 3000Mhz 8 gb 500g samsung evo 870 2 wd nas 6tb in Raid My Main question is what sort of cooler i should be running in the long term, right now im running a Wraith Prism that came with a ryzen 7 for one of my other machines. I have a few aftermarket air coolers around and have found some cheap io coolers in the used market . What are your thoughts?

Greetings everyone, I am currently building a budget PC to use for emulation and light gaming, built from mostly used parts thus fare. However i have run into a bit of a dilemma. I was given a i5-2500k based PC for parts due to the motherboard not working. Along with the processor it also came with 8 gigs ddr3 ram, a Seasonics 80 Bronze 480 watt power supply, and a ATI Rradeon hd 5870 (also have a GTX 580). However finding a new LGA 1155 motherboard has proven a little difficult. New boxed boards are ridiculously expensive and the refurbished options are better priced but freak me out quality wise. Would it be better to forget the legacy i5-2500k and just invest in a Ryzen 3 2200g or 5 2400g system? Thanks Mike C

Afternoon, So my main pc that I game on is the one in the living room no the telly. It's neatly hidden away in a unit and I just open the door when having a "session". However the wife has started using it to watch programs from "Disney Life" for the kids during the day, as it needs to be run from a browser, or mobile app. No Xbox one yet boo . Now my rig is no monster but it's overkill to the extreme for that sort of usage. This is all of terms of the amount of energy being used. So it got me thinking what's the cheapest, smallest most power efficient way of having a media pc the wife can use EASILY. One thing I was thinking was some sort of thin client machine. Like those WYSE machines. Now the ones we have at work have enough "oomph" to play most vids of the net so I think the performance should be fine. I also know they are fairly efficient and ours even have a slot inside for a drive to be installed. what I am wondering though is, will I actually be able to run a OS from it directly? It doesn't have to be windows, but it does have to run Chrome. whaddya think?

Hi everyone, (Was inspired by YetAnotherTechChannel on youtube) Sorry if I put it in the wrong topic, not sure if this is the right one to be categorized in.. I am converting an old crappy laptop to desktop. I am upgrading the parts as below: Original laptop parts (Toshiba Satellite C675) : Upgrades: CPU Intel Core i3-2350M Dual Core @ 2.30GHZ - Can't Upgrade GPU Intel HD Graphics 3000 - Can't upgrade, might do extrnal GPU RAM 4GB of something - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1866 SSD 240gb SanDisk SSD+ - Already Upgraded Some kind of wifi card but meant to be in display - AR9462 AR5B22 Combo WiFi 2.4G/5G & Bluetooth 4.0 module Reason for this random project: Uh because I wanted to start doing more projects and to see what I can do. The project also seems like a lot of fun to do. Don't see many people converting a laptop into a desktop with custom case and everything. Why this crappy laptop? Cause it's all I had laying around and I don't have enough money to get a better laptop new or used. What I have done from starting the post? Well I already have stripped the laptop down and have the motherboard and everything out booted with windows 10. What I plan on doing further on the project: I plan on building my own case for this. Use it as a media pc. Please leave feedback and have any idea's I'd love to hear them!!

Hi everyone I want to build a media pc based around the silverstone PT13 case (http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=419) using a thin itx mobo as close as possible to silent. The build I am considering is Intel Pentium G3258 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor(which I already own) Noctua NH-L9i 57.5 CFM CPU Cooler Asus H81T/CSM Thin Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard Corsair 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (or any similar memory) Samsung 850 EVO 250GB mSATA PSU? which comes to £240 at 100W on pcpartpicker. But I have two problems, 1)the height clearance for the cpu cooler is only 30mm, so I would have to run nh-L9i without a fan as it is 37mm tall. I kinda like this idea because it will be basically silent apart from coil whine, however I don't know if the cpu (not overclocked) and mobo will run too hot without any active cooling. And I don't particularly want a cooler like Silverstone AR04 or stock cooler as I think I will be able to hear it. Also I am not even sure the nh-L9i is compatible with Asus H81T/CSM. 2)the power supply. I have no idea what I am looking for. I know it needs to be a dc power supply like a laptop but I'm unsure what to get (like amp, volts, watts, connector, reputable brand). Should I get something like https://www.amazon.co.uk/UltraSlim-Universal-Monitors-E.... (I live in the UK) Any help would be great, Thanks Chris

After 8 years of using and not maintaining whatsoever my old gaming pc, my father has decided he wants to get a new computer. The main usage it will get is light networking (work correspondence mainly, some web browsing), Spotify, Netflix and the occasional Blu-rays. So in all, very light, non-demanding stuff, but due to his total cluelessness towards technology, it should withstand some long term usage. He got a couple of suggestions from the local PC store (in Bulgaria) for ready builds, but as I'm not entirely familiar with some of the parts ( I live in Finland and we don't have even half of them here), I thought I'd take your opinions: Note: These are exact copy-paste from their email Price: $500 Motherboard: Asrock b85m/1150 CPU: i5-4460/3-2g/6mb/box/lga1150 RAM 4g ddr31600 adata HDD: 500g sg sata6g/7200/3y warr Video card: Asus gt720-sl-2gd3-brk Case: Omega atx-8815bk/no psu LAN PSU Fortron he-500+/500w LG ch12ns30 blue-ray combo blk Price: $300 Motherboard: Asrock b85m/1150 CPU: g3440 3-3ghz/3m/box/1150 RAM: 4g ddr3 1600 adata HDD: 500g sg sata 6g/7200/3y warr Case: Omega atx-8815bk/450w 12cm/bk LG ch12ns30 blue-ray combo blk The preferred points for the build are: any good performing on the budget Quad-core 4Gb RAM 250-500GB HDD Blu-ray drive Let me know what you guys think!

Hi, im looking for a PC for our home theatre. Ive done a few builds in the past but am thinking i just want to get something pre built and compact. Would have to be under $400. All the pc would need to be able to do is stream HD videos, play 1080p movies from a hard drive and be able to run Steam game stream. Thanks, -Chris

Low powered steam in-home streaming box So I am currently looking for a small, compact media pc that can also double as a steam in-home streaming box. I was looking at the zbox pico from zotac because it is small, silent, has a h.264 decoder and comes preinstalled with windows for a very reasonable price. But when it comes to steam in-home streaming the zbox just losses to many frames as Linus said in his review of the product. So I am wondering if anyone knows any small, compact, low power media PC's that can perform well with steam in-home streaming. PS for an okay price. Thanks

This may or may not be a stupid question but I have been struggling to find an answer online as virtually any wording of the question leads to topics about 4k gaming however what I am in need of is a 4k Video computer, it dose not need to be able to play any form of game, it dose need to be internet capable and it needs to be silent. So if any of you know purely for 4K media what are the minimum system specs and how cheap can I buy the components for (it should be noted this is a gift build for my mother who is notorious for breaking/dropping things so components need to be readily replaceable) If possible I would appreciate a PC Part picker breakdown for comparison reasons

Hi Guys, So this is a little quick build I put together after seeing some of the really good reviews and comments about the Intel Pentium G3258 chip. The build isn't build to be overly powerful and if I would ever to actually build it, it probably would be used for a secondary/test PC or a media box. Whilst deciding parts I kinda decided I would stick to a small theme with the brands I used, after looking I ended up going for a Corsair/Gigabyte style build with obviously an Intel 1150 socket CPU. Full list of kit below: Intel Pentium G3258 CPU which costs around £50 Gigabyte H97-WiFi ITX Motherboard which costs just under £100 4GB Corsair Venegence 1600mhz which costs around £30-40 Corsair Hydro H55 CPU cooler which costs around £50 Gigabyte GTX 750ti which costs £100 Corsair Builders 430w PSU which costs just under £40 a 60GB Corsair Force LS SSD which costs £35 and finally the Corsair Obsidian 250D ITX case which costs around £65 add about £10 for Velcro straps or wire ties for the cable management and this build comes to £475. I'd say its quite a nice system for the price, and although areas could be made cheaper I think the quality of the kit would make up for that. Would be really interested to see what everyone has to say or think about it? Also anyone with any good knowledge or experience of the Antec Khuler series CPU AIO coolers and Antec 302 cases, I would really appreciate it if you checked out my other thread in the link below as I have a pretty annoying issues I'd like some help with: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/218178-pc-build-using-the-antec-302-case-and-antec-khuler-950-cpu-cooler/ Thanks for checking this out, let me know what you all think, what you would change etc. I would be really interested to hear what you would build in this type of machine.

So. I have an old HP Pavillion laptop laying around. The thing works fine, but hearing the fan go louder than a lawn mower makes me it's near the end of it's lifespan. The temperatures themselves are about 60-70 on average when not under load, reaching 90, 100+ when benchmarking/... Now, what I want to do: Seeing as I don't use it anyway, I want to try creating a Media PC form it. Ripping out the mobo/internals and putting it under my TV. I even got as far as thinking up a case for it, but then I discovered a problem: My original idea consisted of a vertical design, putting 3 120mm PC fans at the bottom, pushing cool air in from the bottom. But here's the problem: - HOW does one power PC fans without a PSU? I've thought of wiring the fans to USB ports (2usb/fan), but would that work? Are there any better options? Why 3 fans? I want them to go relatively slow, so I get a very quiet build. Like I said above, the current single fan is so loud, I can't even hear the lawn mower over it. Any thoughts? Is a project like that even feasible? Or should I just abandon it together and make a media PC from desktop components? PS: excluding the fans themselves and materials for the case, I'd like to spend less than 50$ (e.g.: fan adapters/...)

Hello everyone! I have a Dell OptiPlex 755 Desktop which is my primary computer for now until hopefully around late August / early September when I'll be building myself my first gaming computer. But before I get that system I was wondering - is it worthwhile to upgrade the current computer's RAM? The specs of the computer are: Dual Core Intel Pentium @2GHz 2GB of DDR2 RAM (2x1GB) Intel Q35 Express graphics chipset 320GB HDD @ 5400rpm Windows 7 Professional 64-bit The motherboard has 4 DIMM slots and was rated by Dell as supporting up to 8GB of RAM (4x2GB) So this thing can't be used for gaming pretty much at all owing to how terrible the Intel graphics are. But I have plans to continue using the system for things even after I get my gaming rig. Media server, possibly turn it into a dedicated media PC for my living-room. I figured it'd need a RAM upgrade, seeing as 2GB is laughably obsolete nowadays. Obviously everything else is outdated too, but it seems that the RAM (and the HDD) are the primary limitations. CPU usage typically stays at around 5 to 20% and RAM usage rarely drops below 80%. What do you guys think? Should I upgrade the RAM, or is the performance benefit not worth the cost considering the limitations of the CPU and HDD? Thanks.

I'm planning on building a small media pc for the living room hooked up to the TV. It will mainly be used for watching movies and listening to music. The budget will be around 400 Euro (550 USD). I already have peripherals and a monitor.

I am planning on using steam home streaming over a wired connection to play games on my home entertainment system. I have three beastly computers in my house so I don't wan't to build a dedicated one for gaming on my home theatre. I have an ASUS RT-AC66U router with wired connections to my three PC's. I wan't input from people who are already doing this, on what is working well for them and what isn't. I wan't to keep the machine very small and cheap. Also, is there any difference between streaming to windows, linux distros and Steam OS? I have tested it out on my linux machine and it seems to be a noticeable amount of latency. Have not tested this out on Windows, nor have I tested out Steam OS. Thanks for any input!

Hey people of Linustechtips.com I am new to the forum and English is not my first language so please forgive me for any grammar or spelling mistakes I might make. I have a question for all of you techpeeps that are willing to help me. I recently switched from console gaming to PC gaming. My xbox 360 died while we were moving and thanks to the insurance I got about 700 bucks back. I don't really know what happened but my uncle is a lawyer and he said he would take care of it. With that money I purchased a MSI GP602PE leopard since I travel a lot between college and my home-town. I have falling in love with pc gaming but the laptop is not the ideal solution at home for me because I have a big beautiful 27 inch AOC monitor that I rarely use with it because I would need to hook up an external keyboard, while I love the keyboard my laptop has. But I am talking too much and I will skip to the question. I am looking into getting a "small" desktop for media consumption and gaming at home. My budget is around 650 to 700 euros. My eye has fallen on the zotac Zbox EN760, it has an i5, 560 m and requires you to install the ram memory, a hard drive and an os yourself. Now I would like to know if this is a good option for me and what sort of RAM and harddrive or ssd I should install. Many thanks for reading this and I hope to hear from you. Mike

So, I am looking to build a media PC for a friend, one of the primary goals of this build is to be able to play 3D blu ray on the projector. I am wondering what kind of hardware will be required for this to be possible? Will I need to use nvidia 3D or can some of the new AMD cards do 3D blur ray playback?

Hey guys. I'm thinking of building a media PC, but want to spend the least that I possibly can on it. I don't need anything crazy, just a simple PC that can handle my media. 1. Budget and Location I live in Canada, so I'll be paying in, you guessed it, Canadian money. I don't have a specific amount I'm willing to spend, as I want it to be the cheapest possible PC. However, if I had to make a really rough budget I'd say I'm willing to spend a couple hundred to a few hundred dollars on it. 2. Aim I will be streaming movies from my NAS, so I won't need large amounts of storage. I've considered using a USB as a storage device, but I'm not entirely sure if this is a good idea. Operating systems don't matter - I'm fine with Linux, Windows, and even OS X (probably won't be doing that though). I should note also that the movies I'm streaming have a high bitrate. I won't be able to route an ethernet cable to the computer, so wireless capabilities are a must, preferably wireless ac capable networking, but it's fine if it's not as long as it can stream my movies without stuttering. Other than streaming movies and browsing the web, this computer won't be used for much else. 3. Monitors I have a TV. No need for a monitor. 4. Peripherals No need for peripherals, as I happen to have a spare wireless mouse and keyboard lying around. One of my concerns about building a budget media PC however is the audio. Will the audio be really bad on a cheap motherboard, or will it be decent enough? Any questions, comments, or possible builds would be greatly appreciated
