First blog: Deciding on tools for my major
Marinatall_Ironside posted a blog entry in JurunceNK's Blog
Welcome to my first blog guys :) If you've viewed my profile already, you may have seen that I'm a college student majoring for video game design. But that also doesn't come with any obstacles that aren't easy to overcome. I need to be able to get the things needed to get my associates degree with a budget of ~$5,700. When I was thinking about "what tools do I really need to make this time swift and easy and that they'll last for a very long time?" When I was looking around on Amazon, I knew that I would need to get books for 3ds Max, Maya, Mudbox, Photoshop, ZBrush, and video game development. Also to add on top of that I would particularly need to grab a powerful-enough desktop or notebook whichever one I can get that will allow me to do some crazy things in those programs because I intend to create a total conversion mod to add to my professional portfolio so that I can land a job at Blizzard Entertainment, starting out as a 3D animator and ascend to become a video game director/developer. Also as a key peripheral that will allow me to do things quickly and easily without having to use the keyboard and mouse all the time, I want to grab myself a Wacom Cintiq 13HD graphics tablet as starters because it has great color accuracy, better drivers, and it's not so big, heavy, and extremely expensive. Okay now to get back on topic on computers, when I was looking on Amazon, I was thinking to myself "should I build a strong workstation, or grab a laptop so that I can do more wherever I'm at?" And those two things narrowed down to "custom workstation or an MSI GT80 Titan SLI?" I know this may get some to say "What?! :o Are you crazy? Are you going to be getting the top-end model which runs at $3,699?" No. I'm looking at the one with only 16GB of RAM because I feel like that should be plenty enough and I also do gaming as well so I also want to have a strong laptop as well so that I can max out games easily because I'm an ultra-settings gamer here. So what is your pick here for a PC? I also want to see what would be the best choice for me here as well so that I can fulfill my dreams. -
Budget (including currency): 2k, give or take Country: Belgium Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: UE, Maya, ZBrush etc. - game graphics artist - and gaming Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I would like an opinion on a build I put together, here is the link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fBhJrD - any feedback or tips would be nice! Thank you very much!

Budget (including currency): 1200 € (can be stretched if there is gonna be a substantial increase in performance/stability) Country: Slovenia Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: 3ds max (v-ray & ART renderers), Maya, Lumion, Revit, Autocad, Adobe suite Other details Has to work well with a 4K monitor Greetings to all. I am starting from fresh. The budget is for the pc only, no peripherals or monitor. It will be used exclusively for rendering and work. Would prefer an AMD based CPU, given they seem to be a lot more bang for the buck, although I did watch a LTT video explaining Intel systems are more stable? I would prefer something that is stable, and can cope with heavy loads for prolonged periods, instead of chasing 60sec better rendering time. Side question - are used Quadro cards worth the trouble?

My Rig : - Motherboard - Gigabyte Z170M-D3H CPU - Intel i7-6700 Ram - 16 GB Graphics Card - ZOTAC GTX 1060 (6GB) PSU - 450 W My PC Crash when playing CS:GO and restarts. I am not sure if this is graphics issue or something else. This is happening from few days. I am a 3D artist. When I render 3D scenes in Autodesk Maya there is no problem at all. I render sequence for a whole day but there is no issue at all. For graphics card check I tried Heaven Benchmark with high settings no issue with that also. And today I again tried playing CS:GO with medium settings , My PC crashed and didn't restart by itself. When I turned my PC on it crashed when my PC showed the desktop I again did the same and it crashed on desktop. I go a Windows repair after that and did a restore point for the PC. Thank-god it worked. please Help !!

Hi My gf is using maya for editing 3D stuff, and the file got corrupted. Is there a way to restore it? longer: She forgot laptop charger, but had to work so she got another weaker one. That didn't seem like it was charging, so she took the batery out and the laptop ran with just the power from the cable. She had a few crashes/restarts inbetween, probably because of insuficient power, which led to the corrupted file. Also now with batery inside, laptop only displays that it is running on power through the cable, ignoring battery; any ideas about this? Thanks in advance, it would really mean a lot to her if anyone can help us out! (andmove me to the right topic if i failed to pick the right one:P)

I'm getting ready to build a new PC and I am looking for suggestions for the best CPU to pick in the $350-$550. My primary use will be 3D development and rendering in Maya using VRay, modeling in Mudbox and Zbrush, and texturing in Substance Painter. I also do tons of editing in Premiere. It would be great to be able to do some decent gaming as well, but this is less important. On a day to day basis I also do a lot of management tasks, so I tend to have 2 or 3 graphics apps open at once, plus tons of browser tabs, word, email, etc. My plan is to upgrade to either a 4k 4:4:4 monitor or possibly the LG 38" ultrawide (if this matters for CPU). I have been looking at i7 6800k, i7 7700k, and i7 6700k. The new AMD CPU's seem really tantalizing as well at this price range. I am a little wary since they are so new, but have been looking at Ryzen7 1700 and 1800. Any thoughts, suggestions, or comparisons would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, thanks for the help. First time building a pc and did some research. Below is my list and I will use it for a lot of rendering and 3D animation. Just need to know whether they'll work together. And if you have any better advice for alternative parts, please let me know. Especially, any advice for a better cooling system? https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Jjv2nn Thanks a lot! -
Hi, I recently purchased an ESI Maya USB 22 off Thomann and ran into a few troubles : After opening it, I searched for the newest drivers from their website and installed them without any issue, I instantly saw 2 new audio outputs appear, one considered as a main ouput with a speaker icon and the other one as a digital output for channel 3 and 4, the problem however is that while I do get sound plugging my stereo line out outputs into my monitors, I don't get any sound from my headphones output and my guitar line in input doesn't seem to work either While I thought this was a faulty unit, I realised that the problem was a bit more complicated after installing it on my desktop computer and having my headphones out instantly work using the same drivers I used before with no additional work required Both use Windows 10 64bits and I'm a bit lost as to what the problem could be, I'm assuming this is some kind of driver issue but installing the Realtek audio manager didn't do much for me, except that the Realtek HD audio software doesn't seem to be working at all Thanks a lot for your help !

Budget: 3,000 USD SOOO... I do a lot of 3D work. If I wanted the perfect build I guess I would buy a bunch of 24 core Xeons and a server BUUUT as I am a simple mortal I guess GPU rendering is the way to go. The amount of money wasted away in render farms has reached a boiling point and I desperately need a PC that can crush Maya, Octane and above all Blender Cycles. I have been diggin arround and I am thinking of putting together the following build. -CPU: Intel 7700k -CPU cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo -Motherboard: Asus Rog Maximus IX Code -Case: Form follows function. I couldn't care less about RGB and all that. So any recomendation would be wellcome. (Thinking of Cooler Master HAF-912) -Ram: HyperX Impact 32gb DDR4 2400mhz (16gb x 2) -Graphics C: Dual GTX 1080 Ti in SLI Please Note that this PC would be non stop rendering for several days. So all components need to be able to withstand all of that strain. Yes, I am the biggest noob when speaking of PC building. I don't even know hoy to put it together myself. Good thing Linus has a bunch of videos for that tho... Thank you for your help!!!!!

I'm an animation student and I'm looking to upgrade my laptop because I can't get stuff done at home anymore with my current laptop. I have ideas for what I want but the community on here is so great I wanted your input. Budget: 1000 - 2000 Want to be able to play most games at 60fps on high. Ample storage for projects would be nice. Maybe not to massive either.

I'm there's some 3D gurus on here somewhere! I'm working on a personal project which has predominantly been developed in my sketchbook and Photoshop. I'm transitioning into 3D software to try and realize my vision more accurately and with greater flexibility when it comes to design iterations. I'm using a bunch of different programs (Marvelous Designer for clothing, Daz3d for characters and so on).I have dabbled in 3DMax a few years ago but I've heard Maya/C4D are most common for designers these days.I'm looking to focus in on one 3D program for modelling and renders so I'm not overwhelming myself as I'm learning Daz and M.D as well. In the future I can expand to incorporate whatever I need but for now I'd like to know which is the most well rounded and approachable for what I'm trying to get done. Primarily I'm looking to achieve a still presentation of my character/prop/environment designs. A good visual reference for you might be Clement's work, this type of presentation is what I'm aiming for. Still Example: https://www.clementbalavoine.com/Neuro-1Animated Example:

I was wondering if the new Ryzen TR 3990x would be good for rendering high quality images and 3D rendering in general. Right now I have a TR 2990WX and a 2080 but since it's my job basically, I want to upgrade to get shorter render times. The 3990x is pretty much within my budget. Would a better GPU affect anything? The software I currently use is Autodesk Maya 2019.

I am hoping someone could help me with this issue I am having with my CPU. Everything works perfectly fine, except for when I start to render my 3D models in Maya 2018. Playing games, watching YouTube, surfing the web all that is fine, except for when I start rendering. Maya itself runs fine. I only get issues when I render within Maya. However, before I installed the Ryzen 7 2700 it would work fine. I was using an old-ish Intel i5 CPU, but I decided to upgrade to the ryzen 7 CPU instead and now I get issue/freezes when I am rendering. I thought that maybe it was having problems when under full load or doing large computes, but I ran a Prime95 benchmark for 20-30 minutes and it was fine as well as the benchmark in ryzen Master. I seem to only get issues when rendering in Maya, so I don't know if that's some sort of different load or something on the CPU compared to the benchmarks. I also ran a Cinebench benchmark and randomly got two micro freezes while it was running however it still finished and was completely fine after. Also, the computer is not overclocked at all, it is just running everything at stock settings. Things I have tried and haven't worked: I have updated the BOIS (Version 1201) I have updated the chipset drivers I have updated my GPU Drivers (all tho that shouldn't matter as the render uses the CPU instead of the GPU). I have updated Maya I tried re-installing Maya as well I also tried installing Maya 2019 and it still happens there too I have tried the different power mode settings within windows. Windows is also fully up-to-date (None of these things worked) PC Specs: CPU: Ryzen 7 2700 (Watercooled) Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix b450-f gaming RAM: G.Skill Flare-X 16GB of Ryzen DDR4 RAM GPU: Nvidia GTX 980 PSU: Corsair CX750 750W Power Supply SSD: 2x Samsung 860 EVO 500gb HDD: 2tb WD green hard drive I would very much like some help on this matter. I don't know if the CPU is faulty or not, but some help would be appreciated. Thank you

Hey y'all, I'm running low on ideas, and after contacting friend, the internet and my peers, I decided to turn to the LTT forums to find a solution. It started last week, after using Maya2019 in class and at home for a couple of hours, all seemed fine, until the next day. My Maya kept crashing on my save file, working in another file or a new one was no problem. Sometimes it would just close, sometimes it would give me a save prompt and then crash, and sometimes it crashed but gave me a crash 'report'. After trying to fix it, I just bit the bullet and went back to an older save, losing some progress. All was well until Maya started crashing again, now even while working in new files. I reinstalled Maya, updated everything I could think of, updated my drivers etc, but the problem would still be there. The next day, I decided to give it another shot. Suddenly, Maya didn't crash anymore, it acted very stable and I was able to finish my assignment + render it! I was happy and relieved. Gleefully I went on to start on my next assignment, I opened Photoshop and started to get my bearings, until it crashed giving me a crash 'report'. So now Photoshop started acting just like Maya did, I reinstalled Photoshop and even went back to older versions but nothing helped. I went back to Maya, but now Maya is acting up again too. After hours of searching and a lot of trail and error, nothing helps or works, does anyone have any idea what's wrong with my laptop? Did I get hit with a Windows updates that royally fucked up my system? Please help

My little brother works for Moving Picture Company and wants a new laptop for work. He will be regularly using programs like Maya, Nuke, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Photoshop. His living situation is somewhat unstable otherwise I would build him a tower. His budget is $2,000. It’s been a while since I’ve payed attention to the latest hardware and software and I don’t know much about laptops. edit: he just said he would prefer a 2k monitor. I told him he might have to up his budget lol.

Hey there, I'm currently looking for a convertible for university which I'll mostly do simple coding on. I got specific requirements for the device, like a backlit keyboard and numpad, which I consider a must-have for coding. I've chosen the HP ENVY x360 15-cn0003ng for those tasks, though I'm not sure whether I'll be able to run Autodesk Maya on it for basic box modeling tasks. I plan to use my desktop for most of these tasks and gaming, so it's all about the basic functionality within Maya really. Do you think the MX150 will cover this requirement or will Maya perform exceptionally poorly? I know there are laptops/convertibles with a GTX 1050 or 1050 Ti even, but I can't say I like those in terms of their features or typical "gamer design" (who ever liked those?!). Thanks for the info!

I am a game design student, I use Maya for 3D work but I can't use my student edition for commercial work cuz Autodesk will sue me to my grave, so I had this retarded idea, if I make the model in Maya and use Blender to export it will I still be subject to scrutiny buy Autodesk lawyers. I was just curious about this, please don't leave an answer stating just learn blender cuz I am already doing that, college doesn't really like me doing that but I like being a rebel

Hello everyone, Long time listener, first time caller. This post is very specific to self-employed VFX workstation users, machine learning developers, and air-cooled multi-GPU madlads. The State of Play I come from the film, TV, and agency freelance industry. I am a standalone 3D artist and video professional. It's been a pretty slim year, but streaming TV work has kept me going, and I'm looking to upgrade in the next 8 months or so to stay competitive with the agencies that share medium-sized CPU/GPU render-farms and spendy licenses for farm managers like Deadline. I've been saving up my pennies for this upgrade for almost five years! I need a case that fits a lot of hot components with room to breathe! I am upgrading from a 10-core Intel 6950X to a CPU like the AMD 64-core Threadripper 3990X, if/when they lift the 256GB RAM limit at the next revision! I shoot and edit 10-bit video, composite 3D shots in Nuke, animate in Adobe After Effects, cut in Premiere Pro, grade in DaVinci Resolve, make models for augmented reality, and create VR experiences in Unreal Engine, but l pay most of my bills by modelling, animating, and rendering in Autodesk Maya. Right now I'm managing to make this profitable on a single machine by using Redshift. I use a 2016-vintage Phanteks Enthoo Luxe, fitted with an Asus X99-E WS/USB3.1 motherboard. I have an NVIDIA 1080 Ti, and a pair of NVIDIA 2080 Ti cards connected via an NVLink bridge. More PIC-E lanes are more-better, but 8X vs 16X slot speed isn't currently an issue, as rendering single frames is so slow that this should never be a problem. My three cards are in slots 1, 4, and 7. The 1080 Ti in slot 7 of my motherboard can't actually fully seat into the last PCI-E slot because the motherboard audio headers and others get in the way! The 1080 Ti lives in this PCI-E riser extension on a little 3D printed standoff that rests on the PSU at the bottom of the case. If I pack the GPUs next to each other in slots 1, 3, and 6, they overheat badly and the system often crashes. A gap of 1 PCI-E slot between the open-cooler cards drops their temps from 90°C to 70°C (140.0 °F - 194.0 °F). Hopeful Requirements • A PC case that fits an SSI-CEB (phatboy ATX) motherboard • An X399 motherboard • Noctua NH-U14S TR4 SP3 or another extreme-high-end air cooler • 4 X NVIDIA 2080 Ti GPUs or 2X 2080 Ti graphics cards and 2X future 3080 Ti cards • Air-cooling is preferable to water-cooling for the sake of longevity and service-life. An AiO CPU cooler is absolutely fine, as long as it's not made by Enermax! Possible options • Nanoxia 4 x GPU case • Nanoxia Hydra II Rev. B 8 GPU case PCI-E slot riser cables really don't bother me, as long as they're properly shielded and don't get in the way of anything crucial. The GPUs are pure computation units, and 8X speed doesn't seem to upset my other video applications. In tandem with this point, I feel that a cryptocoin mining board with non-standard connections wouldn't be suitable. Naked PCI-E connections would be better. The Big Ask here is for advice on building a workstation that can act as a GPU rendering server, and doesn't have to rely on 11,000 RPM bloweymatron noisemakers to feed the 4 GPUs with cool air! Do I need to just suck it up and build a case out of aluminium rail and 3D printed parts to house 4 air-cooled GPUs with a bit of breathing space?! If I'm being silly and asking for the moon on a stick, please tell me, as I understand this is pretty niche!

Laptop for photo editing & game dev work.
FoxyOrange posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Australia - Budget is flexible, AUD$2000 as a starting point, will go higher for options that fit needs. Not against opening up a laptop that will need changes (removing Killer networking chips, adding another ram stick, replacing storage). I've replaced CPU coolers in desktops so if a re-paste in a laptop is a similar experience then that's okay too. A few extra thermal pads needing to be added is okay too. I've never undervolted before but I hear that's pretty simple. Hi. I've been looking around reviews and store listings for laptops which would be used for the following tasks: Photo editing (Lightroom), not working with clients so this is mostly a hobby. Some game dev work. currently working with Unity, Maya, Adobe Suite. May look into teaching myself UE4 later on. Some work on my own and some work with teams and for uni. I own a desktop (i5 4590, 970) so the laptop doesn't need to replace it. I just need something I can take with me to uni to use on campus between classes (computer labs are the class rooms really so I can't use those easily when another class is running) and when working with team members on group projects. The uni work coincides with the game dev needs. Although I'd be taking it with me to campus or when meeting up with working partners, I'm not against something a bit bulkier and heavier than the thin & light options. For me a larger laptop would be 2.5 KG in weight, 3cm in thickness. Give or take a little here or there. I assume that specs like a 7300, 7700, 8300 for the CPU would be more than enough for me. For the GPU a 1050ti should be fine too. I don't intend to push the latest AAA games on this device, and the games I would be involved in making aren't likely to be too intensive either. Since I have my desktop, this isn't going to be a main gaming device. I'm sure I'd appreciate something in the 1060 range and I wouldn't turn my nose up to that but I understand to satisfy other needs I have to forfeit some performance. I don't think I wanna go below a 1050 though. For the screen, a wider colour gamut would be appreciated. There are some options out there that are plagued by 50~60% sRGB screens. I know I can change it my self after purchase but I've not yet found domestic stores for laptop screens. Importing raises concerns for anything that could go wrong with the new panel as I'm not covered by local consumer laws. Battery life is another factor. Longer battery run times for web browsing and video watching are desired. I don't mind if it's a matte or glass cover but for matte screens, I prefer lighter AG coatings, so very hard grainy coatings are a turn off. (That's picky, I know) Spoiler below for Australian online stores. For what it's worth, my previous laptop experience comes from a 2013 Macbook Pro, 15". The display is nice and the battery still can hold up fine and in its earlier years the life it gave was very good. I disliked how hot it got when launching any game and the high pitched and loud fans were annoying, even 2D games made it hot. I am fine to get something thicker and heavier if it means sparing me from those same annoyances. Spoiler below has some considerations I've already made. Thanks for any help! I know some requirements here are a bit picky and laptops are devices where a user has to make a compromise here or there. I get it's probably an awkward time to be shopping too as some manufactures are probably still yet to release all their newest offerings with 8th gen CPUs. Still, any advice or user experience is appreciated.- 6 replies
