Is there a way in windows 10 to display output to a single screen attached to a motherboard display but still utilize the processing power of the DGPU in a desktop environment?
-
I recently got Dragon Age Inquisition and after playing for a bit i changed it from DirectX 11 to Mantle API and the game started freezing constantly, was running very low frame rates (around 6-15 fps), i had no stat display from rivatuner, and it would randomly studder and start screen tearing. Everything works normally in DirectX11 however. Im just curious as to what makes Mantle do this. Specs: AMD FX-6350 OC'd to 4.2 GHZ MSI 970 Gaming motherboard XFX R9 270X 2GB 8GB RAM Windows 10 Pro 64bit

I bought the premium edition of battlefield 4 on sale a few days ago and have been having some issues with it. A few minutes into every game i join, it turns into a slideshow. Fraps doesn't work in bf4 for some reason so i can't tell you the exact fps figures. I tried every fix in the following link- http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2390044/battlefield-fps-drop-stuttering-lag-fix.html (except for step 4) which seemed to work at first, but when i fired up the game the next day it was back to square one. I also noticed that the game only uses between 1 and 2.5 gigs of ram in the task manager even when i launch the 64 bit version of the thing. My specs are as follows- FX-6300@stock R9-270 OC'd to 1ghz 2x4GB Kingston hyper-x blu 1600mhz asus m5a97 le r2.0 1tb of storage (HDD) NOTE- I'm running the latest version of catalyst (15.4) and i use mantle as the default API in-game; along with a combination of high and ultra settings running and 1366x768.

Does any one know of a benchmark or stress test that will allow me to choose different APIs to run the test with? I'd love to see the difference between DX9 and OpenGL and Mantle.

Hey there all! So im building a Gaming PC soon but still need to find a good GPU. I am mainly going to use my PC for Streaming and Gaming. I need to know what GPU is the best for these tasks. I am aware that AMD cards run hotter and louder? (i think). The card i was thinking of getting is either the Gigabyte GTX 960 2gb or the Gigabyte R9 280X 3gb. If you have any suggestions on what is better or a better alternative then feel free to comment. Thanks Guys!!

The internet was abuzz with news of AMD's latest cryptic Mantle announcement. This led many to believe that AMD was actually killing off the revolutionary API. But Mantle's far from dead, in fact it forms the base of the new industry standard Vulkan API. AMD stated : Full Article

once again i will bow to AMD for forcing the industry to take a step forward in the proper direction. I know they did not invent 64bit processors but they pushed Microsoft to develop the 64-bit architecture for windows. And now they forced Dx12 to be upon us and all mantle's improvements will be seen inside DX12 http://www.anandtech.com/show/9036/amd-lays-out-future-of-mantle-changing-direction-in-face-of-dx12-and-glnext this is why underdogs are always needed in these industries!! one of the quotes i like from one of the amd reps was " MANTLE did it's job it provided users with closer to the metal performance like we see on consoles. Our goal with Mantle was to prove to the PC industry there is optimizations beyond new hardware that need's to be addressed". But one drawback from what they ended up doing was any PC game developer now had to choose if they wanted to support mantle and not only that it actually made coding for pc more frustrating during the 1 year mantle was strong and around because a bigger team was needed to develop for both engines. This was not part of AMD's plan they wanna make gaming easier not more difficult so they decided to say DEV's please now focus on DX12. I believe the biggest case of were dual engine development screwed a company in the ass is with EA with there frostbite engine. Bf4 had direct x crashes when it 1st came out and now Dragon age inquisition also suffers from direct x crashes. Because they spent alot of time doing proper mantle support and guess what dx11 wasn't treated with the same fidelity as mantle's engine was. Yes the new frostbite engine has it's flaws as well but it stands to show that there wasn't nearly as many mantle related crashing reports as direct X based crashing going on.

We initially planned to release the FPS module, which we are calling Star Marine, shortly after PAX East in April. We demonstrated a build of the module at the backer event that ran fairly well. The most significant technical hurdle faced today is the networking backend. Needed to develop a Generic Instance Manager (GIM) and rewriting both the Matchmaker and (for the larger project) the game Launcher from scratch. The GIM allocates and recycles game servers at a much faster rate and in a more reliable way than before, helping to get players into the action more quickly and keeping them in their games with less incident. One of the biggest non-technical issues is getting the visuals right. Only 15% of the team has been working on Star Marine; it’s just been the major focus because it was the next public release. RSI are going to investigate releasing a build with Star Marine disabled that would allow you to experience some of the changes and updates we’ve made over the last few months to the core code base. There are only about 150,000 addresses left in the pool at ARIN, one of 5 pools worldwide. Some may get returned if an address holder goes out of business or fails to pay its dues, and there will be a few more distributions from a global pool run by ICANN. For now, getting waitlisted is mostly a problem for bigger entities. The blocks left in ARIN’s free pool now are relatively small, with 512 addresses or less. IPv6 released in 1998. As i read in the internet all r9 280x cards support mantle. As i read in the sapphire website the specific model sapphire r9 280x vapor-x model does not have the mantle sector (sector: i mean the place where the site explains the specific technology the card has, for example it has sectors for the cooling systems etc.) in the overview tab (http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1... ) although it does have sectors for directx12 and opengl4.3. I tried to see the overview tab of other sapphire cards like the r9 280x vapor-x tri-x model and it does have a mantle sector. So, does the sapphire r9 280x vapor-x (the vapor-x model and not the vapor-x tri-x) support mantle? And generally is the mantle so important for the amd cards, i mean should i buy this gpu even if it doesn't support mantle?

Hi everyone, I recently installed Thief and wanted to use mantle but the tick box was greyed out. I have done updates for my GPU and AMD catalyst control centre, just wondering if anyone else has had this problem before. I have an R9 270 with a core2 duo E7400 and 4 gigs of DDR2 RAM. I'd like to use mantle since I get quite a few dropped frames due to bottlenecking (real bottlenecking, GPU is running at around 80% and in the more demanding areas around 70%). Any help would be great

So I was thinking I bought a r9 280x around 3 months ago, after that I started modding skyrim. Then about an hour ago I remember that I could utilize Mantle. Have anyone heard anything new about this? (yes i know that Nvidia users can´t use it, I have a laptop with a Nvida card. And I´m looking for new ways to boost performance FOR JUST ME, I´m just looking for news)

News story: http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/anton-shilov/hybrid-liquid-cooling-system-for-alleged-amd-radeon-r9-390x-pictured/ Looks like AMD is making this card extremely enthusiast friendly. However, the fact that the cutout for the fan is closer to the end of the graphic card I think suggests that, although unlikely, there may be a blower stlyle cooler similar to the 290X and water cooling is a optional extra to extreme overclockers who want to play the silicon lottery and push their card to the absolute limit. The new cooler may also result in high base and boost clocks. Personally I am very excited to see this and hope AMD continues satisfying enthusiasts.

Hey guys. First time for me posting in this forum but I have been a long-time lurker on the LinusTechTips and NCIS Tech Tips youtube channel. I'm a college student from Germany. So please ignore any kind of weird sentences or spelling mistakes I was wandering if you guys could give me some advice or put some convincing arguments on the table which graphics card I should get. Current graphics card: R9 280X Sapphire Vapor-X (custom cooled with the "Alpenfön Peter II") 14.4 catalyst drivers Current CPU: i5 4670k Ram: 8gb 1300 DDR3 Option A: R9 290X Option B: GTX 970 Option C: Another R9 280x for Crossfire Games I play: Mainly Battlefield 4 Monitor: BenQ Xl2411T (so I'm trying to reach 144 fps or 120fps (together with strobelight) The concerns I have in mind: Despite the raw performance boost the GTX 970 brings in comparison to the R9 290X, having Mantle in mind I'm not really convinced that it will actually perform better in BF4 I would have to upgrade my PSU if I'd crossfired two 280x (although pricing for one 280x + psu is almost the same as getting one of the other cards) R9 280X uses GCN 1.0 and GCN 1.1 on the R9 290X should perform better on mantle (would that be enough to run BF4 on ultra no AA no HBAO on constant 120fps?) The main reason I'd like to upgrade my R9 280X is that although I can run BF4 almost stable on 120fps (on Ultra Textures / Filtering and the rest on low / off) I'd like to ramp up the graphics a little higher while still remaining with a stable 120fps for smooth gameplay. I'd really appeciate any kind of input from you guys and I hope some of you have similar systems or experience with BF4s' Mantle performance.

I need reliability over performance.I know that R9 270X is better performer than gtx 660 but what about artifacts, fps drops with R9 series??????

As the title suggests i'm trying to get Mantle to work ok with my crossfired 280x's. I am using Thief which does have the Mantle and Mantle Crossfire settings, however when i enable "Mantle" and "Mantle Crossfire" and try to run the game it opens then just immediately closes. I then tried turning off "Mantle Crossfire" leaving just "Mantle" enabled. That also does the same thing. I have tried: Completely removing the AMD drivers and downgrading to earlier versions Completely removing and reinstalling Reviewing Crossfire settings Googling for answers This warning appears in the event viewer when i try and run Thief: Unfortunately nothing came up trumps, any ideas?

To what extent can graphic cards perform better through software optimization? I mean some games out there look so good and run super well on mid range graphics cards.. now i am wondering if we really do need more hardware to make games look even better. I mean how much more cuda cores do you want to squeeze into upcoming nvidia cards just to gain 5fps? Do you guys think it's similar to apple iphones where they have to release new graphics every two years to sustain their business?

Anandtech has released its benchmarking results for Nvidia's new driver that's supposed to go head to head with AMD's Mantle API. And here are the results. http://www.anandtech.com/show/7926/nvidia-releases-33750-beta-driver-offers-significant-performance-improvements Notable gains in Bioshock & Metro up to 11% Notable gains in Bioshock, Metro & Grid 2 up to 9%. The jump in Rome II is due to the R331 drivers lacking SLI support for Rome which was introduced in the latest R337 drivers. These gains come up considerably short on Nvidia's previous claims.

This is somewhat of a follow-up to Extremetech's previous coverage of Nvidia's GameWorks program . To those who don't know GameWorks is an Nvidia program by which developers are offered Nvidia optimized implementations for specific in-game effects through graphics libraries. The effects include things like Tessellation, lighting & ambient occlusion. And these libraries are effectively "blackboxes" by which the developers are prohibited not only from optimizing these libraries for AMD or Intel GPUs but also from allowing any vendor other than Nvidia to implement its own optimizations or rendering techniques. A number of prominent developers have criticized Nvidia's GameWorks program describing it as a "BlackBox" and some went as far as to call it "unusable" where developer control over the game's code has been stripped & hidden away from them and only given back under strict circumstances by which no modifications are allowed to benefit the hardware of any company except Nvidia. The list of developers include Kostas Anagnostou the Senior graphics programmer at Radiant Worlds, John W Kloetzli, Jr a graphics programmer on the Civilization team at Firaxis Games, AngeloPesce a Rendering Technical Director & Johan Andersson the Technical Director on Frostbite at Electronic Arts. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18592187 SOURCE

There is mounting evidence that Microsoft actually may have adopted Mantle and is shaping it into the next iteration of DX, i.e. DX12. Semiaccurate recently posted an article where they flat out say that Microsoft is merely adopting Mantle and is calling it DX12. Their rationale is intimately tied to the XBOXONE's deficits compared to the PS4 both in hardware performance and sales. And they believe that this is Microsoft's attempt to tie its console platform to the PC in hopes of saving it. Other websites are flirting around the edges of the same idea, Extremetech for example has mentioned a few facts that support this as well. And there is the fact that AMD has been recently tweeting about GDC sessions involving the "next Direct3D". Now why would AMD advertise for a "competing" API, the answer is that they're actually not. Most of this is conjecture at this point in time but all will come to light in the upcoming few days in Microsoft's upcoming DX session at GDC. The adoption of Mantle by Microsoft brings both positives and negatives. The obvious & immediate being an industry standard low level API for all parties to use but you'd also expect Microsoft to pull their usual corporate nonsense and only release the new DX with future Windows iterations. This also means that Mantle might never migrate into the Linux environment. What are your thoughts on Microsoft adopting Mantle ? I can see the immediate short-term benefits but I can't really see if any long-term benefits exist since I firmly believe that Linux is the gaming platform of the future.
