Hello everyone, I'm Ivan. A friend of mine give to me her MacBook Air in order to repair it because all of a sudden it become extremely slow and sluggish. Mac OS struggles to arrive to the login page. Installing (very slowly) Windows 11 on it, I saw that the CPU is capped to 0,49 GHz and doesn't go up, even under stress. Apple Diagnostics says that everything is fine. What should I do? Battery is fine, the SSD has been changed a week ago thinking that it could be the issue. Thanks to everyone who will help me!

Hey! I'm a student and I'm trying to ditch my Thinkpad T480. It's not that I hate it, it's an amazing machine. However, it's not quite doing what I need it to. It's 8th gen i7 and now primitive IPS display struggle as soon as I start anything that begins with "Adobe" and I kill my battery in a day without issue (new batteries, cycle count on both <90). In Windows I use 3 desktops. One for school which contains about 25 chrome tabs, one for work which has Slack and 10 Firefox tabs, and one for personal. In the personal desktop, I normally just have Firefox, Signal, and Spotify open, but its not infrequent that I whip out Illustrator, Photoshop, FL studio, Visual Studio, CLion, RekordBox, or even Premiere Pro. As you can imagine, this doesn't go so well and my battery life seems to reduce to 25 minutes. I decided, even as an engineering student, that I will need to buy a MacBook. Once I start doing engineering stuff for school in a few years I'll have to buy a windows workstation, but for now it's gonna be Mac. For the first time ever. I'm torn between the 13" M2 Air (512, 16gb), a refurbished 14" mbp (m2), and a refurbished 14" m1 pro. What's the best move? Battery life is important, but so is the ability to run photoshop and illustrator. Portability wise, any of these would work. My bag is already heavy enough. I get the apple education discount, and I also work at best buy, which means the Geek squad refurbished m1 would come to $890 pre tax. That means, unless I wanna spend $2,000 for the m2 mbp I would be deciding between the air and the pro, but at that price difference the air is actually more expensive. Is that m1 pro mbp better than an m2 mba? I'm guessing fans and battery life would play a big difference there but I'm not sure how big. If I have the money, I'll get the m2 pro, but otherwise what do you all think is the best move? Thanks!

Hello all, Have not shopped for a Laptop for a long time. I have no clue anymore what chips are good and what brands are top in qualify. Last I remember the XPS13 was top notch. But anyway. I need a laptop. I was thinking of just getting a MacBook Air M1 at Costco for $799.99. (Since that's what I recommend my family when they ask lol) But don't feel like learning excel and productivity shortcuts again. Could I ask this forum for recommendations at a sub $1,000 that will compare to the Air M1? Looking for a snappy pc, mostly doing data analysis. Excel. Not looking to game on it. Also want the keyboard to be great. Same for track pad. Hopefully build quality is good too. Lots to ask. Maybe not possible on a the windows platform. Edit: what would be something comparable not necessarily at the $800 could be more. Thanks.

I am thinking of buying a Macbook Air M2 base model. I am not a huge multitasker and usually close all applications which are not currently in use and just reopen them later and i prefer to do it this way. I want to play Minecraft occasionally on high settings and a render distance of 12. I also want to use medium quality shaders. Is 8gb ram enough to maintain constant 60fps or will it start feeding into swap?

I have a very complicated and frustrating situation and am seeking advice. During the end of November of 2021, my 2020 MacBook Air M1 started having issues as the back USB/Thunderbolt port stopped working and would not transmit any data (power still worked in this port). After attempting every fix I could think of and chatting with Apple support, I took it to my local Apple store in Los Gatos, California and had it looked at. The technicians there confirmed that it seemed to be a hardware issue and would have it repaired under Apple Care (this machine was only about 6 months old at the time and was well taken care of). I agreed to this after it was promised it would be dealt with quickly and be back in time for me to go back to school after Thanksgiving break. I received the laptop back a few days later from the Texas service center and after a full logic and i/o board replacement (along with the touch id module for some reason) the port was fixed. Unfortunately new issue was now present though. Whenever the laptop was closed for more than a minute and then opened the backlight of the screen would refuse to turn on until the lid was closed and opened again. For some reason once the laptop had entered sleep mode the backlight would not wake with the display when the lid was opened but when a flashlight was held to the screen you could see that the display itself was showing the login page but the backlight would not turn on. I researched this issue more and found many others complaining of it in both M1 macbook airs and pros mostly from December of 2020 and January of 2021 and there seemed to be no indication that a fix had been issued. I talked to apple more and tried a fresh install of Mac OS as well as reverting to earlier versions and trying various updates but nothing worked. The Apple support representative suggested sending it in for repair again and I reluctantly agreed since it didn't seem like something I would be able to figure out. I had a box sent to my house and sent it back off the the repair center and received it back again a few days later (this is now mid-December of 2021) and saw in the repair notes that the entire display assembly and lid of the laptop had been replaced and they claimed the problem was fixed but after trying it again I found the problem was exactly the same as before the repair. Very frustrated at this point I talked to Apple support once again and they asked I bring it back to the genius bar at the Los Gatos Apple store. I did and they attempted to fix the problem there but couldn't figure anything out so offered to do an "in-house expedited repair" where they would overnight parts from other Apple stores and attempt to diagnose and fix the issue at the Los Gatos store. I reluctantly agreed and left the device with them as they promised it would be ready to go before I had to leave to go back to school after Winter break. A week passed with no update from them and after several hours on the phone I finally got through and they said they were still working on it. At this point I had to go back to school and was forced to borrow a family members old laptop in the meantime. A few days later I received a call from the Apple store saying that they were unable to fix the device and would be holding onto it for purpose of diagnosis and would be sending me a replacement laptop. It would be a little bit complicated as I had the 16GB RAM model which are made to order and not kept in stock at any stores. They told me they would start a case with higher ups at Apple to get that started and would call me back the next day or day after with an update on the replacement and an ETA on when I might get it. That was a week ago and I received no such call back. I spent several hours on the phone with Apple support this evening trying to figure out what is going on and was told that the Los Gatos Apple store is closed do to Covid-19 related issues and the replacement process was never started. Additionally I was told there was nothing they could do since the Apple store has custody of my device and until they reopen they can't help me in anyway. I understand that supply chain issues and pandemic safety concerns make this situation complicated but I am running out of options as to what to do and just really need a working computer back. I tried to explain my situation as I desperately need that laptop for online classes and can't keep the laptop I am currently using for much longer but the support rep assured me there was nothing she could do and apologized for the inconvenience. I am really not sure what to do at this point as it has been well over a month with little to no progress made in getting a properly working laptop back to me and I hate to keep complaining to Apple support reps who can't actually do anything. Based on my experience here it seems like there may be some hardware level issues with the M1 laptops and it doesn't seem like anything is being done to properly address this. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey guys, a couple of months back I asked around here on the laptop/prebuilts forum to see if I should buy a 2017 Macbook Pro with 16gb RAM and 512 gb storage for music/photo/video editing/production (ProTools, Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, Lightroom, Photoshop etc.), and I was told no, I would be better off saving up a bit longer and buying an M1 machine, (here's the topic https://linustechtips.com/topic/1388936). So, I trusted you guys, just over $1k in laptop savings, and I'm looking around for 16gb RAM options which are pretty hard to find in my price bracket. I noticed on Apple.com that they sell refurbished M1 Macbook Airs with 16gb RAM/256gb storage for $1,019, which comes to about $1,119 with tax+shipping in my area. I have also found a used M1 Macbook Air in "good" condition ("barely used") on Swappa that also has 16gb RAM/256gb storage, for $950 with tax+shipping, but the warranty expires at the end of February. Would it be better to buy the used one and save the $200, or buy direct from Apple? Also, would it be prudent to pony up some extra cash for a 512gb option, or can I just use external ssd's to hold my projects? Thanks guys

One big problem with the 13" M1 MacBook Air (and Pro) is that it only has 2x USB-C ports. Therefore, I'm looking to maximize the use of these ports. I'm considering the LG 27UL850-W monitor, since it has built-in power delivery to charge the MacBook, and also a built-in USB hub. Here are my questions for you monitor experts out there: Will the USB hub on this monitor be able to operate on full USB 3-speed or will it be as slow as USB 2? Is this monitor good for color accurate work like film editing? (My budget is around $500 for those who are curious) I do really wholeheartedly appreciate all the help!

I need help explaining the Apple SSD issue to Apple itself (yeah…). If anyone has ideas on how to achieve this, I’m all ears. I got my M1 MacBook Air in April. It started freezing and crashing on week 1, mostly on video calls. On May/June I stumbled upon the news and tested my SSD. 80Tb written in two months. The machine is a hot mess. All contact with Apple Support so far took me nowhere, as they just say that this is not an issue, the computer might be crashing due to software, the machine is beautiful (no kidding, this was one of the technicians answers). The most recent test, two days ago, shows the computer is still overusing the SSD. 113TB written in 3 months. And I’m on Big Sur 11.4, that supposedly fixed this. Can anyone help me explain Apple’s mess to Apple?

can I still use Touch ID to login to my m1 MacBook Air or would I have to use my password every time even if I just wake it up by opening the lid and not just when I reboot it?

Hi. First post here looking for quick sanity check. Hope someone will answer. I was asked to "repair" crashing MacBook Air 2011 (yes 2011). So I cleared it's drive, uninstalled some useless apps friend downloaded over the years, basically same thing I would do with my PC as regular maintenance. After a week my friend told me that it keeps crashing. So I said to myself "let's go nuclear" and I tried to reinstall it's OS what every its called (El capitan). I created bootable USB with help from a friend from college who also has Mac bcs I could get it done on my windows not even on my manjaro setup (I could be dumb but in any case ... thanks apple). When I plug USB in I can start the installation but after 20ish minutes it stops and asks for installation to be restarted. After restart the intern ssd is no longer showing up and it takes 2-4 reboots to show up again. Tried this whole process like 5 times before I gave up. Btw before reinstall Mac kept getting these questionmark folders on boot. I found out that it means that Mac cannot find bootable drive. So I'm asking for sanity check. Is this a SSD failure? I already kinda ruled out the RAM and CPU since from bootable USB it works just fine (I also had few crashes even in recovery menu booted from ssd). So does it sound like SSD failure to you?

MacBook air early 2015 11-inch battery was trash (1000) cycles Replaced the battery with this one https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B00WSLYABY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 MacBook battery still trash lasting 6 hours even when l calibrated it. (100% - 0%) These are the steps l used to calibrate it: 1) Shutdown, plug in A/C power and wth the computer turned off, charge up to 100%, then keep charging for two more hours. 2) Reset the SMC (System Management Controller). 3) Boot up the computer and disable sleep mode in Energy Saver preferences. 4) Use the Activity Monitor Utility to set up a slow and steady power usage. 5) Unplug A/C power and leave the computer undisturbed until 0% battery turns off the computer. 6) Leave without power for 5 hours more to completely discharge. 7) Plug in A/C power - charge up to 100% and then for two hours, with the computer turned off, as before. 8) Unplug A/C power, and discharge the battery using the computer more normally but avoid any high energy apps or services. 9) Plug in A/C power - boot up, Reset Energy Saver settings if necessary, and use as normal. Macbook Battery lasts 6 hours with half brightness running Chrome YouTube videos. Not sure what else to try. Maybe l didn't do the process correctly? So I'll try it again.

I think makes some good points about Linus' take and I would love to hear what Linus and you guys think about it. If you compare this review with other products like Windows laptops, GPUs, CPUs, phones and etc... then you could see that Linus is kinda going too far, Linus also says that Apple doesn't send him stuff, may be he is salty about it? I don't know but Rene has some good points and was polite unlike that video from Jonathan Morrison which I would never encourage because that was made to put Linus down instead of to have a good conversation about this issue. I love Linus too, I usually have the same opinions when it comes to tech, but that day after I watched the Keynote from Apple I knew that this chip is gonna be good and there was nothing wrong to say about it except the whole 2 year transition thing, I watched the LTT's video later and I didn't like the way he addressed it, yeah the charts were bullshit but it wasn't as bad as he make it to be. To put it right, I think the tone of the whole video could be better, it was like he was trying to find faults instead of appreciating it. Anyway I think Rene here has said it better than many others, what do you think about the whole thing?

So I had to get a mac for my school, and I thought I would be getting a refurbished old MacBook Air. My parents surprised me with a brand new one with upgraded storage. It ended up being $1,200 for the laptop. I was so excited because I had a 2010 MacBook Pro that ran Minecraft at 5 fps. This computer ran Minecraft at around 50 fps. Just Minecraft and Roblox runs well. Cities: Skylines runs at 10 fps, and Airport CEO at 20 fps. I also dream of being a content creator on YouTube. My games selection is also crap because mac has such a limited amount of supported games. I have a channel but I find myself doing videos with my camera facing my monitor because if I even try and shut down all other applications, open OBS, and put it on the lowest setting, I always get the "Encoding overload" message that tells me to reduce the quality. I dream of a PC that can record content and game at the same time with no problems. My CPU on my Air is also clocked at 1.6 GHz *grrrrrrrrrrr*. Apple really needs to step up their game because I could have gotten a refurbished MacBook Air for the same price as a decent rig. Thank you for reading and have a wonderful day .

Hey guys I have a 2011 Macbook air that I wanted to give to a friend to just use word, print and do some basic things... it has previously had the hard drive wiped by someone else and I opened it up the other day. I clicked reinstall lion from the troubleshooting boot menu. But it says it cant find additional components to install lion. Is there any way around this? Or a way to use a Usb or something else to get the computer going again? (yes I have no idea how macs work and never will)

Fellow Techies, I came into my office area and opened my Macbook Air to pickup where I left off on a few things that I am working on. When I pressed a random key to wake up the computer, it looked like I had taken LSD mixed with Benadryl (no I have not taken that mixture...yet) and it freaked me out and so I quickly turned off the computer and turned it back on before thinking of taking a picture or what may happen when it comes back on. The screen turned back to normal but has me scratching my head. Can anyone maybe give me a little insight? Am I going to have to look at getting the screen replaced or getting a new Macbook (insert any Mid-2012 to 2015 model here)? It would be nice to get a bigger screen. Thank you in advance.

Hello, I bought a macbook air 2011 11" basemodel (the 64gb SSD, i5 @1.6 and 2gb of ddr3). For some reason its super laggy. None of the animations are smooth, and it can't run basic things like YouTube without major stutters. its currently running Sierra, didn't fare much better in lion. There isn't a battery in it, ordered it online, currently plugged into wall. The computer seems mint to me. I saw videos on YouTube with the same one running sierra just 4gb of ram, and they were quite snappy. Also windows PC's with the same amount of ram run fine in windows 7. Any help? Thanks in advance. Also for some reason the ssd has only 20gb left, sierra takes 40gb??

I'd like to have a Windows version of a Macbook Air with a full operating system and a beautiful display. Requirements <$1000 13"-14" Display <3.25 lbs 400nt Brightness IPS Panel 1080p Resolution 6-8+ hours battery life Backlit Keyboard Quality Key Buttons Responsive Multitouch Trackpad Aluminum Chassis Solid State Storage Obviously, gaming is not a factor at all (it would be for MS Office, multitask browsing, Skype, light Photoshop/DAW/video editing) but having a decent processor and 8GB of RAM would be great.

This thread is about why you love Apple's OSX. Why do you love it? Do you prefer it over Windows? What do you dislike? Do you find yourself all alone in an ocean of Windows or Linux, or do you find yourself with the majority of illuminated apple logos? Where could they improve? What could they bring back? What was your first Apple computer, where did you get it, how much did you buy it for, and what was it like when you first started it up? No we are not Apple fanatics, we are not silver metal casing and white illuminating logo lovers, we just prefer things a little.... well you will find out what the last word will be. My first apple product that I got was an old iMac. I don't remember the specs or year but it had the clear plastic all over it. I remember powering it on... wow. Plus it was free (it might have been stolen.... but who knows). The previous owner did not wipe the hdd. So a quick call to apple and $20 later I had some software on the way. I tell ya that was a awesome feeling. Installing the software and seeing all the animation was intoxicating. Windows could learn a thing or two from Apple. I hated to see it go, but $75 bucks wasn't too bad. My first purchased Apple computer was a 2012 Macbook Air 11 inch. I love this thing. I got for $400 from a classmate on the second semester of college. The feeling of powering it on and playing with updated software... ohhhh gives me a hard on. I love it because it is simple (took a little getting use to but with some homework I wasn't doing too bad). The OS doesn't take much resources like windows does. It is clean looking and I like that. Would I replace my Windows pc... nope. I love my Win. 7 pc. I will never let it go unless it's reached it's end like Win XP has. Software running of XP is impossible. I find myself to be in a mix of both windows and mac. I never see linux out in college. I don't have any hates just a few dislikes like how you have to go around your elbow to get to your thumb for certain tasks or finding things, or getting to a certain file or program or moving something. The command button is not placed in a good spot. Please share your experience.

So I bought a used MacBook Air for cheap wanting to experience it having only used windows and a dab of Linux previously. The original drive had died in the machine so I found an adapter with positive reviews and an SSD that was supported and bought them. The adapter needs high Sierra to work. I was previously running the device off of a USB (mostly just to make sure everything else worked) on OS X Maverick. Well it wouldn’t let me update to high Sierra for some reason so I uninstalled from the USB to reformat the USB with the new filesystem for high Sierra but it won’t let me install and since I can’t install that I don’t have the NVME firmware for the adapter to work. Any ideas on what to do?

So I recently acquired a 13" 2014 Macbook Air for very cheap and it has a dead drive. I presumed that a simply replacement should do the trick, and this would allow me to delve into the world of not only macs, but thin and lights that was previously an unknown world to me. Upon further research however, I've had some issue with finding consistency in the replacement parts. I've seen a lot of suggestions of OWC Aura Pro SSD's, but I've also been seeing a lot of very mixed reviews with these drives. Some are saying it was very plug and play, others are saying that they needed to jump through hoops to get it to work and others are saying it worked fine at the beginning but then caused issues later down the road. I'm not sure what to do now and any suggestions on how to fix this would be very appreciated.
