I have a question about a Mac Pro upgrade. I recently acquired a 2010 5,1 Mac Pro. I have tried repeatedly to upgrade the OS to something recent like big sur or monterey, but quickly realized it's unsupported. After watching a few youtube videos, I realized it was all because the graphics card this mac came with stock does (some ATI one) not support Metal, Apple's new graphics engine API. I found a couple videos explaining what graphics card you CAN upgrade it with, and that DO WORK with metal on the 5,1 Mac Pro, but I wanted to check with you guys to make sure that I could have decent performance with something like a GIGABYTE Radeon RX 570 8GB GDDR5, or a (used) PNY NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 VCGGTX680XPB ENT ED 2GB GDDR5. I have a budget so heres a list of ones i was considering based on other lists of compatible ones: (all used) GIGABYTE Radeon RX 570 8GB GDDR5 PNY NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 ENT ED 2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA Quadro K5000 4GB GDDR5 XFX AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB SAPPHIRE NITRO Radeon RX 580 8gb I've heard the nvidias need drivers to work with metal, which i'm not too keen on because messing with computers isn't really my thing. I narrowed down the variables that have to work: It has to be EFI boot screen compatible, work with metal on the latest OS, not require a power supply upgrade, and not have to install drivers. I am looking for a recommendation for a graphics card that checks all these boxes and can be acquired used for an affordable price. I'm also wondering if I could have moderately good performance with a new graphics card and no other upgrades on the mac pro, and which graphics card i should buy for a tight budget and that works. I will be doing music production only on this computer, and the reason I need it to upgrade is because music software won't run on El Capitan LOL! Thanks!! ggossett PS. I'm using a Mac mini rn with 1.5GB of ram total

Summary NOTE: This is a Rumor, not confirmed by Apple. Everything here should be taken with a grain of salt. A new small Mac Pro with Apple Silicon will come out and the redesigned iMac will have colors. The small Mac Pro looks like "3 to 4 Mac Mini stacked on top of each other" and apparentally looks like the PowerMac G4 Cube. The iMac will have a redesign that is similar to an iPad Pro and the Pro Display XDR, and comes with "fun" colors. The IO and it's location is unknown. Quotes My thoughts As with all leaks, this one might not be accurate. To me personally, I think this would be a pretty logical move of Apple. The small Mac Pro was pretty interesting to me, since it would probably be cheaper than the current Mac Pro, and it seems like it's the same design idea as the 2013 Mac Pro. Small and premium looking. With the iMac, I was genuinally suprised that Apple would add colors to the iMac, but I guess it's targeted on the younger people market. Anyways, any Apple news are exiting, since when Apple releases this creature we may finally see other companies finally get high performance ARM processors into powerful laptops and desktops. Sources

Hello! In the end of 2020 I bought an Samsung 860 EVO 4 TB to my Mac Pro 5.1 from 2012. I had an 2 TB 850 EVO earlier without any problems. I installed the new disc and even managed to upgrade to MacOS Big Sur 11.1 via open core. I noticed that everything was slower on the new SSD. Adobe apps were lagging, especially Dreamweaver. I tested the disc in DriveDX and found an issue called UDMA CRC Error Count. I was told to change cables in the computer because there were problems with connection between SSD and logic board. But there are no cables in Mac Pro, the SSD is installed on a pci-e card directly in a slot. With time this error grew. The number of data transfer errors increased (see attached file). I have had it in for check twice in a store here in Sweden but they couldn’t find anything serious, but they told me that the disk isn’t compatible with Mac. Well, it can be used, I know that, but how much this problem is lagging it down I don’t know. I have also tested my 2 TB Samsung 850 EVO, which I am using right now, and that had no issues. I have also an 1 TB 850 EVO, bought back in 2015, but that one also has UDMA CRC Error Count, which I didn’t know until now. My new 860 EVO is bought on eBay and was located in Spain. The seller is gone so I can’t get any help from him. I can’t return it through eBay either because time has made it impossible. I should have bought it in Sweden and could have returned it if needed. Can I go on using this or should I buy a new one? Can’t anything be done about this? I have tried to download Samsung’s own app for fixing and maintaining their SSD:s but there is only a Windows-version. In the long run this old computer must be changed to a new one. But to what? Building a Hackintosh will probably be impossible when Apple changes to ARM chip in the coming years. Already now there is big issues with installing Big Sur 11.3 in Mac Pro 5.1. It can’t be done unless some code is fixed. And buy new Mac is impossible if you only want a new desktop, and I am of course thinking of new Mac Pro, also called the grater.

Here are the ones listed from Apple's doc: AMD Radeon RX 560 AMD Radeon RX 570 AMD Radeon RX 580 AMD Radeon Pro WX 7100 AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 AMD Radeon Pro WX 9100 AMD Radeon Frontier Edition Will they all work fine with Metal? There was a section that specifies a specific model, but I wonder if anything changed in the last decade I'm helping a co-worker due to Teradici (PcoIP) version 20.04 not working on his Mac Pro running on High Sierra.

graphics cards Mac Pro 3,1 and GTX 750 ti do not agree...
MajesticUnipig posted a topic in Graphics Cards
I recently purchased an EVGA GTX 750 ti SC for my quite old Mac Pro 3,1 (Early 2008, so it's around nine years old now), and I cannot seem to install any drivers that will run with a 750 ti on OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). If anyone can direct me in the right direction for successfully using a 750 ti inside of my Mac Pro 3,1, I will be eternally grateful. Thanks, MajesticUnipig -
I was thinking of building a PC, not going to use OsX or anything just the case, any tips or is it just like any regular pc build? Aim: Gaming and telling my pc owner friends that I bought a mac and it's really good Have all of the peripherals and a monitor. EDIT: I AM NOT GOING TO PIRATE A VERSION OF OSX Reason for edit: Had to be typed in caps lock because people thought I was talking about pirateing and didn't read the txt.

could a 3,1 mac pro be used to run a minecraft server?
thehardwarehacker posted a topic in PC Gaming
so, this is more asking if this idea would work on any sort of small to medium scale. i have a 3,1 mac pro tower, with 8 cores, and currently 16GB of ram, all other part are base for rite now. if i want to set this up as a minecraft server for when some of my nephews come over (about 3-6 of them), and have them connect to it with laptops running the minecraft client, would that work at all? -
hello, i acquired a 2008 3,1 mac pro late last year, and i decided that i wanted to do i few upgrades to it to make it 'work flow friendly'. so, ive done processor upgrade (from 4 to 8), now i aim to do a graphics card upgrade, only thing is theres alot of loose info floating around on what does, and doesn't work. i am looking for a graphics, thats ether top of the line, or close to for the model, and that absolutely works, with no tinkering, with the 3,1. is there any definitive answer for this?
-
this is the second time ive tried asking this question, but the scenario surrounding the first one is now antiquated, so now i ask again, with some new requirements. i have a 3,1 mac pro, running 10.11 (el captain), and i am trying to set it up to capture game footage off my pc. i just tried the BM intensity pro 4K,and that saw no success, so i plan on returning it. this time i plan to try some form of external capture device, except i dont know what to give a shot this time around, so i need suggestions. the only requirements that the card has to meet, is it needs to record 1080p video A 60 FPS.

Hi, Is it possible to add liquid cooling to a 2009 Mac Pro and Will this be usefull or is the built in air cooling suficient?

So there's a bunch of news, TLDR version is that Apple couldn't update 2013 Mac Pro due to space and thermal constraints put on by the design Promises a new Radically reworked modular Mac Pro, that can easily be upgraded to satisfy all the disappointed pro users for next year Apple will also be releasing a new display with the Mac Pro, and update iMacs with a lot more horsepower later this year But for now, Apple has released a slightly updated Mac Pro with a few spec bumps Quotes from Apple The company admitted that its 2013 model approach hasn’t been as upgradable in practice as it had hoped. Phil Schiller acknowledged that the 2013 Mac Pro had not been well received by many pros, and it was this that had led to the radical rethink. The meeting was a high-profile one, with Craig Federighi, and John Ternus, who heads Mac hardware, also present. Schiller was unusually frank. Even among pro users, however, Apple said that notebooks are by far the most popular form factor, followed by the iMac. This is why it has prioritized the new MacBook Pro machines, and would also be making new iMacs with a pro focus. Apple reiterated that they're still focused on Macs and were keen to dispel the rumors about going all iOS My Thoughts: I'm definitely excited for the new model, though I'm not going to buy one. But it's unusual for Apple to admit they had few issues and moreover detail their upcoming plans but I think this is a great move especially since the Mac Pro had been stagnated for 4 years bringing about various claims and rumours about Apple ditching the Pro users Source: https://9to5mac.com/2017/04/04/apple-upgrades-mac-pros-signals-radical-new-modular-mac-pros-next-year-with-apple-displays/

Ok here we go. I just saw an amazing vid on youtube by this guy "Yetanothertechchannel". In this video this guy managed to make a modular Mac Pro somewhat upgradable and excluyding the parts, I calculate the total cost at 75-80$. Here is the vid so you can watch. So my question is this, how on earth is it so difficult for apple to make a Mac Pro with all those engineers and teams upon teams and 100 billion dollars on the bank. I mean the guy's design is flaud here and there and each and every one of us could find 10 mistakes with it, but he is one guy with a timeframe of a few weeks and he made something this good. Plss Apple fans, even Apple itself if you are monitoring the forum, explain this to me, how on earth can it take you 12+ whole months from today to do something like that, and as a conclusion why does Apple charge so much money for those feaking specs, and I get it their software+hardware combo is unmatched but still why is their markup so much more than the average manufacturer???? Anyway , sorry for the rant, and if you have the knowledge post your design maybe we can give Apple some ideas while we are at it.

so i wanted to get one of these when apple still sold them but never had the $$ but ive since found this one [ image below ] for about $285 i want this purely for editing in PS and premier or Final Cut Pro. Will this be better then my current system 6700k 4.0ghz quad-core 16gb ram. If its not can u explain why? If it is can you explain why? I know i post a lot but LTT forums is very helpful and i dont want to make a mistake

Hello everyone, I am looking at getting the 2015 MacBook Pro 15in (Just deal with it) for video editing, because its what the people i work with use. I'm going to go with last year model, because the performance doesn't differ that much and I has come down in price a lot. Now I was looking on eBay and Craig's List, and I noticed you can get the non-trashcan 8 core mac pro for around $400. I had a very interesting idea. What if i did all of my editing on my macbook (i use premire )(even though the mac pro is 8 core, GPU, ram, and storage suck compared to the macbook) after I finished I could open premier on the mac pro and render out the video. That way render times would be shorter and I would be able to do other things with the macbook during the render. Does this make sense at all?

Hello all. i got my hands on an early 2008 mac pro 3,1, and im considering installing a second quad core in it, taking it to 8 cores. in my research it seems to do so, i would want a second E5462 to stick in the machine, but what i also discovered is that the 2 processors need to be 'matched', which is what i dont quite understand. am i simply looking for an E5462 @2.8 GHz, and i also need to procure a heat sink, off ebay, or is there more to this than i know?
-
I'm trying to replace my parents early 2008 iMac, because it's just a headache trying to teardown the machine just to clean the heatsink and replace the cracked paste. It's a large upgrade from the Core 2 Duo Penryn(I think) with 2GB of ddr2. Also not too sure about the power supply if it can handle the Radeon 6770. It also does list the board as having a PCie 2.0 16x slot, I'm not going to put a high end gpu but a Radeon 6770 that I have around as an upgrade to the GT 120. The mac pro is running El Capitan, are there specific drivers or some hotfix I need to do to get it running? http://gbccomputerstore.com/used-mac 8-Core Intel Xeon Processor 2.2GhzUp to 1TB SATA Hard DriveUp to 12GB memory (based on machine and no picking)No Keyboard, and No Mouse No Warranty, all units are final sale14 Days defective exchange guarantee Final Sale no refund.$275 (CAD) limited quantity tax included

Im trying to do boot camp on my mac pro. I guess because of the video drivers when i try to boot into setup it has a bsod. I found this link, and i am having the same problem. https://discussions.apple.com//thread/4814506?start=0&tstart=0&replyId=21366513 The problem with that topic is that the link they provided to fix the issue will not open because the website doesn't exist anymore.

Hi, I recently saw the post about a potential project involving a Mac Pro case. I happen to have one in much better condition that I’d like to donate. All internals have already been removed. Is there anyone who can help me get it to the right people? The only issue is probably shipping, even with no internal components, this beast is still very hefty. So I’m not sure how that would work.

Apple’s new Mac Pro will max out at 28 CPU cores, but that’s projected to cost as much as a midrange sports car. Before I start this thread, "Get a PC" is unfortunately not an option. I'm using a Mac Pro (late 2013 model running High Sierra) at work specifically so I can share Premiere Pro project files with the rest of the editing group without filepath conflicts, and previously was using a PC. After attempting a combination of VNC and Synergy, it was concluded that I should connect all of my monitors to my Mac and just remote to my Windows desktop for IT tasks. All was well until I tried to use a total of three displays, though I was aware of some strange compatibility requirements concerning the type of connectors with Macs. I first tried using two mini displayport to DVI adapters in thunderbolt bus 1 and 2, and then connected my third display with an HDMI to DVI adapter. No matter what I tried, the last display connected would show the sleep message, go black, and then return to the sleep message, and cycle repeatedly. Switching what monitor was connected where or using an HDMI to HDMI cable (one of my displays has HDMI in addition to VGA and DVI) had no effect. I then found a mini displayport to VGA adapter, which surprisingly allowed all three displays to function flawlessly, but the VGA connected display was hopelessly blurry. I then concluded that the issue resulted from using both the HDMI and thunderbolt ports on the Mac and found a third mini displayport to DVI adapter, which again did not work (however, this one was not an official apple cable like the first two), causing the same "sleep loop" issue. It would seem that there is some issue with using three DVI monitors with a Mac Pro depending on how they are connected. Can someone with more OS X experience explain what cable setup I would need to make this work? Or if it's possible at all? The monitors in question are three old mismatched ones: Dell ST2420L (DVI, VGA) Dell P2412H (HDMI, DVI, VGA) Samsung EX2220 (DVI, VGA) The graphics card is an AMD FirePro D300. What does work: mini dp to DVI mini dp to DVI mini dp to VGA What does not work (only two of the three displays will function): mini dp to DVI mini dp to DVI mini dp to DVI mini dp to DVI mini dp to DVI HDMI to DVI mini dp to DVI mini dp to DVI HDMI to HDMI What'd like to make work: 3 digital connections
