Hello there, I am looking for a video editing software other than Final Cut Pro and iMovie. Are there any other programs that I can use?
-
Hello all. Have any of you used either or both of these. Would you recommend? Or something else? I'm leaning more towards the Asus since it's under 1k. Would seem to fit what I need and from what I saw it is well built. The acer one seems good too cause I could potentially do some light gaming. Meaning I probably wouldn't game too much on it. But the power might be good too. I Had posted before about recommendations on a laptop that would be somewhat compatible to MacBook air M1 in terms of build and screen quality. Keyboard, trackpad and snappiness. Since I laptop for work and school. Mostly data stuff. Like excel, sql, power bi. Thanks everyone for any input. Acer x 14 ASUS X14

Hello all, Have not shopped for a Laptop for a long time. I have no clue anymore what chips are good and what brands are top in qualify. Last I remember the XPS13 was top notch. But anyway. I need a laptop. I was thinking of just getting a MacBook Air M1 at Costco for $799.99. (Since that's what I recommend my family when they ask lol) But don't feel like learning excel and productivity shortcuts again. Could I ask this forum for recommendations at a sub $1,000 that will compare to the Air M1? Looking for a snappy pc, mostly doing data analysis. Excel. Not looking to game on it. Also want the keyboard to be great. Same for track pad. Hopefully build quality is good too. Lots to ask. Maybe not possible on a the windows platform. Edit: what would be something comparable not necessarily at the $800 could be more. Thanks.

my MacBook M1 Pro 2021 was working completely fine this morning. Then eight hours later, when I opened it back up, it was just a black screen. Now, when I turned it off and turned it on... it just boots up with the Apple logo and nothing else shows.

Hello, I am planning to get a new laptop for web development work. I’ve been a Windows laptop user for all my life but I want to dip my foot into Apple laptop and see what’s up. I’ve seen reviews and just the battery life alone intrigues me. I have a budget around $1800-$1950(USD). Here’s some context, where I am situated these are some of the options that I am wanting to get. These are all brand new prices Macbook Pro 14” M1 Pro base model = 1750$ Macbook Pro 14” M1 Pro (10c-16c, 1TB SSD, 16gb RAM) = 1820$ Macbook Pro 14” M2 Pro base model = 1920$ Personally I would love to get the upgraded M1 Pro with 1TB of storage. The SSD of both base and updated model is faster than the M2 by quite a lot and with the bigger capacity I can use the device for longer without having to store data outside via external means. However, I am not sure how that battery would hold up even though it is brand new from 2021. Is the battery degrade overtime inside the sealed box? I am curious to know how other people’s 2021 Macbook Pro 14” are holding up, especially the battery. What do you think of those 3 options? Which one should I get? Thanks in advance and have a great day!

I looked around for a bit on this forum and didn't see this video posted anywhere, and if it has been, my apologies. Just came across a YouTube video of someone who managed to decipher the inner workings of the T- and M-series Mac/MacBook SSD setups, and as it turns out, the internal SSDs CAN be swapped and even upgraded! As the channel discusses in the video, T1 MacBooks can have their SSD and SSD Controller removed, and a part (which the channel manufactures, for disclosure) can be soldered in place to link up the PCIe slot the SSD controller would take to a normal M.2 slot for mounting any readily-available consumer storage. Pretty neat! But, and in more interesting details, what the channel actually outlines is how the storage on the MacBooks/Macs with the T2 chip, and the later the M1 (not dissimilar in implementation), can be upgraded, and while it's not easy by any means, it is possible. Apple employs a (presumable) RAID 0 configuration among 2-8 flash chips attached to the T2 or M1 that are individually given unique proprietary firmware to determine how and if they will work together, and be physically seated on the motherboard. With a flash tool and enough SSD donors of matching models, and provided the machine has the physical mounting pads available for the chips (as it turns out, they are enabled dynamically depending on how they are configured at the factory, which the video goes into more detail about), the SSDs can be replaced or even upgraded. Obviously this wouldn't be a job for the average user, and would require a professional board repair specialist or enthusiast soldering hardware, but could save many Macs and MacBooks from the dumpster after storage failure and perhaps offer a storage upgrade if that's a cost worth stomaching. And, which I think is the most important part of all of this, it proves that storage modifications to these devices ARE NOT impossible, which puts Linus' own Mac storage upgrade attempts out of date, to the extent that it was suggested to be outright impossible. For what that's worth, I definitely think this makes a great future re-visit for LTT to tackle in the future, if not on the user-accessible storage models like the Mac and Mac Studio, then for the Labs with more intensive soldering equipment Regardless of the facts, the ways that Apple is going about this is obviously not good for consumers or repair as a whole. While the technology behind this is intriguing and inventive, and it's encouraging that it is possible, the fact that it's gotten to this point at all is a mess for everyone but Apple themselves. DEFINITELY check out the YouTube video, they worked for 6 MONTHS on this video and bought much of the hardware necessary to test this all themselves! It is an incredibly interesting watch and is 100% worth supporting.

Hi, I got a 5120x1440 120hz 49' ultrawide monitor and want to connect it to my M1 macbook pro. Im looking for a USB Dock that supports the monitor at its max resolutions and frequency. A dock that also has a few usb 3.0's and usb-c's, supports charging via the dock and has SD card reader. Is there anyone that can recommend me one? Help is much appreciated. Thanks

So I picked an m1 air base model up for video editing (specifically cause final cut is so much better than premiere) 2 months ago now and have had consistently amazing final cut performance. Sometimes for up to 8 hours straight, with barely any thermal throttling This is my first ever mac and first Apple product since 2014 so yeah, I don't know much But out of nowhere I had a kernel panic and then when I relaunched final cut it was running extremely sluggishly. The ONLY thing that changed was a kernel panic happened For the rest of that editing session and the next the same same sluggish performance. Random beachball after cutting a clip or any other basic edit and while playback is fine the playhead kinda jumps across the timeline as it's playing. Is it possible the kernel panic affected the final cut install? Or the macos install? As I mentioned, this is my first mac ever and I don't know much so if the answer is obvious, sorry Other essential info: I edit off the internal 256gb ssd, (I'm ordering a 2tb t7 soon since I run out of space all the time) and have some assets (sound fx) on a 2tb usb 3 Toshiba hdd. But that's not the issue cause I've done this for 2 months without issue I have bg rendering OFF because storage and there normally isn't a need for it (there is already normally smooth playback) Running macos 11.1 cause 25mbs download speed here in Australia And the Wi-Fi issues of m1 mean I can get a max of 3mbs down when on Wi-Fi (that fluctuates) Any other questions, just ask When it's not having problems (in my 2 months, I've had way more issues on mac than windows) it flies through complex 4k timelines and even basic 6k. And for $1600 AUD I'm not complaining considering the other option (Prior to m1 I mean) is a PC for $200 AU more and you miss out on final cut which is better for a myriad of reasons.

There was a small incident. I bought the recently released MacBook Air on M1 by first googling whether it supports Microsoft's office. I saw that there is an office and everything is fine, but only after a while I realized that this office is stripped down, there are only basic things like PowerPoint, Word, Excel, etc. I understand that there was never Microsoft Access on the Mac, it is exclusively on Windows and it is not a problem for me to download parallels and install Windows on it and I will run access through it, but the question torments me and I just can't find the answer. Of course, an ARM chip needs a Windows that works on the arm architecture, and yes, there is one, but does the Microsoft Access work on it?

FOR NEWS SITES AND OUTLETS: DON'T MAKE THIS SEEM EXTREME, THE CAUSE IS UNCONFIRMED AND THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM FOR MOST USERS WHO DONT HAMMER THEIR MACHINES Some professional users of the new M1 Macbooks are experiencing extremely high drive writes over relatively short time. IMPORTANT UPDATE: This is likely macOS-related behaviour and Apple can fix it. Update 13:24 Update 2: Update no. infinity:

Hello i am gonna need to buy Macbook as a Xamarin developer that needs also way to develop for iOS. I am still choosing between Macbook Air M1 and Macbook Pro M1 (Probably gonna end up buying the Pro because of the better lasting battery). But my main question is about RAM. Does the 8GB vs 16GB makes a big difference ? I am using my windows pc with 16GB ram and my laptop with 12 GB. Should i opt for 16GB or will the 8GB do the job ? Thanks for advices.

Hello! I am having an issue where no matter the game or program, or whether or not my it is plugged in, my MacBook Air M1 runs at 60 FPS. Games in browsers supported by ARM (no Rosetta), games that don't support ARM (Rosetta). All of it runs at 60 FPS. How do I turn off this limit? Minecraft with Shaders or on lowest settings runs at 60 FPS (nice, but ONLY 60FPS), Krunker.io at lowest and Highest settings 60FPS. My issue is that I would like to measure my machines capabilities against other machines on more than just benchmarks. I also would like to connect higher refresh rate displays and take advantage of my hardware's power.

I've been running an Unraid Server for ages with my file shares over SMB, it works absolutely fine with Windows but I've found performance is horrible on my M1 Macbook Pro. Both OS's are up to date and connected using Gigabit Ethernet and I have ensured that "Enhanced MacOS Interoperability" is enabled in my Unraid Settings. Raw Throughput seems passable when transferring large files, but there is a delay of about 1 second for every new file, so when transferring large amounts of smaller files such as 15KB XMP files, it takes forever to do so. Have been trying to figure this out for months to no avail, please help!

I have a very complicated and frustrating situation and am seeking advice. During the end of November of 2021, my 2020 MacBook Air M1 started having issues as the back USB/Thunderbolt port stopped working and would not transmit any data (power still worked in this port). After attempting every fix I could think of and chatting with Apple support, I took it to my local Apple store in Los Gatos, California and had it looked at. The technicians there confirmed that it seemed to be a hardware issue and would have it repaired under Apple Care (this machine was only about 6 months old at the time and was well taken care of). I agreed to this after it was promised it would be dealt with quickly and be back in time for me to go back to school after Thanksgiving break. I received the laptop back a few days later from the Texas service center and after a full logic and i/o board replacement (along with the touch id module for some reason) the port was fixed. Unfortunately new issue was now present though. Whenever the laptop was closed for more than a minute and then opened the backlight of the screen would refuse to turn on until the lid was closed and opened again. For some reason once the laptop had entered sleep mode the backlight would not wake with the display when the lid was opened but when a flashlight was held to the screen you could see that the display itself was showing the login page but the backlight would not turn on. I researched this issue more and found many others complaining of it in both M1 macbook airs and pros mostly from December of 2020 and January of 2021 and there seemed to be no indication that a fix had been issued. I talked to apple more and tried a fresh install of Mac OS as well as reverting to earlier versions and trying various updates but nothing worked. The Apple support representative suggested sending it in for repair again and I reluctantly agreed since it didn't seem like something I would be able to figure out. I had a box sent to my house and sent it back off the the repair center and received it back again a few days later (this is now mid-December of 2021) and saw in the repair notes that the entire display assembly and lid of the laptop had been replaced and they claimed the problem was fixed but after trying it again I found the problem was exactly the same as before the repair. Very frustrated at this point I talked to Apple support once again and they asked I bring it back to the genius bar at the Los Gatos Apple store. I did and they attempted to fix the problem there but couldn't figure anything out so offered to do an "in-house expedited repair" where they would overnight parts from other Apple stores and attempt to diagnose and fix the issue at the Los Gatos store. I reluctantly agreed and left the device with them as they promised it would be ready to go before I had to leave to go back to school after Winter break. A week passed with no update from them and after several hours on the phone I finally got through and they said they were still working on it. At this point I had to go back to school and was forced to borrow a family members old laptop in the meantime. A few days later I received a call from the Apple store saying that they were unable to fix the device and would be holding onto it for purpose of diagnosis and would be sending me a replacement laptop. It would be a little bit complicated as I had the 16GB RAM model which are made to order and not kept in stock at any stores. They told me they would start a case with higher ups at Apple to get that started and would call me back the next day or day after with an update on the replacement and an ETA on when I might get it. That was a week ago and I received no such call back. I spent several hours on the phone with Apple support this evening trying to figure out what is going on and was told that the Los Gatos Apple store is closed do to Covid-19 related issues and the replacement process was never started. Additionally I was told there was nothing they could do since the Apple store has custody of my device and until they reopen they can't help me in anyway. I understand that supply chain issues and pandemic safety concerns make this situation complicated but I am running out of options as to what to do and just really need a working computer back. I tried to explain my situation as I desperately need that laptop for online classes and can't keep the laptop I am currently using for much longer but the support rep assured me there was nothing she could do and apologized for the inconvenience. I am really not sure what to do at this point as it has been well over a month with little to no progress made in getting a properly working laptop back to me and I hate to keep complaining to Apple support reps who can't actually do anything. Based on my experience here it seems like there may be some hardware level issues with the M1 laptops and it doesn't seem like anything is being done to properly address this. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey guys, a couple of months back I asked around here on the laptop/prebuilts forum to see if I should buy a 2017 Macbook Pro with 16gb RAM and 512 gb storage for music/photo/video editing/production (ProTools, Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, Lightroom, Photoshop etc.), and I was told no, I would be better off saving up a bit longer and buying an M1 machine, (here's the topic https://linustechtips.com/topic/1388936). So, I trusted you guys, just over $1k in laptop savings, and I'm looking around for 16gb RAM options which are pretty hard to find in my price bracket. I noticed on Apple.com that they sell refurbished M1 Macbook Airs with 16gb RAM/256gb storage for $1,019, which comes to about $1,119 with tax+shipping in my area. I have also found a used M1 Macbook Air in "good" condition ("barely used") on Swappa that also has 16gb RAM/256gb storage, for $950 with tax+shipping, but the warranty expires at the end of February. Would it be better to buy the used one and save the $200, or buy direct from Apple? Also, would it be prudent to pony up some extra cash for a 512gb option, or can I just use external ssd's to hold my projects? Thanks guys

So, I have done some research into the buffness of the M1 base model's GPU, and have found that it is equivalent to a mobile 1650. (I have the 7 core so about 8%-12% slower, but you get the point). How was Apple able to get that kind of power while drawing so little power (haha)? Is it because companies like Nvidia don't have the budget to completely redesign a new GPU, and have to work around inefficiencies from old designs as they upgrade generation to generation? Is it because the GPU was specifically made for efficiency since it is technically a smartphone GPU? To summarize, why haven't AMD or Nvidia been able to get the same power:performance that Apple did? Especially considering the fact that Apple doesn't specialize in GPUs.

Hi there I'm a film student about to finish his degree in film and Tv. I plan on freelancing next year and i need to upgrade my current laptop, a 2011 13 inch Macbook pro with 16gb of ram and a 2.7ghz i7 processor. I don't have a big budget being a student and realistically can only afford the cheapest mac that can get the job done. I was originally looking ay getting the 15 inch 2015 macbook pro with the top of the line processor and 16gb of ram. Now i see that the M1 Macbook air is out and causing all this buzz and i was wondering if that would be a better option. Where i live in South Africa the two choices are around the same price and I'm struggling to pick between the two. I love the idea of having a 15 inch screen and 16 gb of ram with the 2015 mac but wonder if the M1 chip is worth giving those up for? Let me know your thoughts thanks>

So, after the release of M1 Pro/Max chips and recent benchmarks, Apple suddenly has a lot of raw power to support AAA games. How do you think Vulkan vs Metal competition is going to pan out? With the new chips, Apple got rid of their old bottlenecks in gaming which are; poor cooling and throttled Intel chips. Which I think was the main reason Apple was so behind with the game industry With M1 chips there is no heat related throttling and we have an absurd amount of GPU power. https://www.anandtech.com/show/17024/apple-m1-max-performance-review From what I understand, from now on, the only bottleneck in letting AAA title game devs adopting MacOS, is Apple itself. What do you think?

As seen on the launch event yesterday, the M1 pro and M1 Max look bigger than its previous M1.If they Can get such a performance boost by just (maybe) making it "Big", then why can't Intel or AMD make their chips bigger? I don't have any idea how a chip works or how it is made. Just curious of what would happen if other chip also made bigger chips. Please don't laugh at my knowledge.

Budget (including currency): $7000 AUD Country: Australia Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Games, Video Editing, and hobby 2d, 3d cad. Other details : Well Hi all. So I have got myself a NCASE M1 (still to be delivered but shipping this week). I have checked PCI LANES, clearance and many other things however I would like other peoples feed back on how they may setup. Listed is the current Parts below. I would like to be able to under-volt things to try help keep things cool. I have added a couple of Noctua fans to help lower the DB from the standard AIO water cooling fans. I also wanted one of these AORUS FO48U 48" monitors before Linus got himself a free one! Also considering de-shrouding the GPU and putting Noctua fans on it. so if you know of a GPU (NVIDIA?) that fits the M1 de-shrouded please let me know! I can through various websites save around $300 of the below price however currently seeing if mwave.com.au will just match price.

Budget (including currency): $1000 preferred, $1500 is possible Country: Slovenia, EU Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Light productivity and content consumption Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): My old 2015 MacBook Pro is still working FLAWLESSLY, except for the battery. I can only get around 2-3 hrs of battery of it. This type of performance is completely unacceptable in reference to my current work/study situation. I'd also prefer a smaller form factor laptop, aka. the MacBook Air/Pro 13". The main question I have been asking myself is: is 8GB of RAM in the newest Apple M1 machines REALLY enough for what I'm trying to do, which is writing, online videos, music, etc. Since I don't render, edit, etc. I'd have normally said yes, absolutely, however I am a Chrome tab hoarder, meaning I like to keep as many Chrome tabs open as humanly possible. I am wondering if anyone like myself has any real world experience with the base version of the MacBook. I would like to keep this purchase as cost effective as possible, since I, like I mentioned, don't plan on using this thing for ANYTHING "heavy". Thanks in advance!

I need a laptop for a portable video (up to 4K60) editing machine and have narrowed it down to either an M1 MacBook or the Dell XPS 15. The main thing I'm looking for in this case is a computer that'll provide the best possible experience in Premiere Pro for ~$1300 or less. I've scoured many articles but I'm simply not sure which one is better suited. I mainly want the fastest possible render time and overall very smooth performance. I don't need anything insane since this won't be my main editing rig. I haven't really worked with laptops for a long time (the last time I edited on a laptop was 10 years ago) so I have no real reference to rely on anymore. Thus, I'm reaching out. For my type of editing, I mostly take high res video of weather events, vehicles, and aviation and make it suitable for clients or YT. I don't do anything really crazy with it, I just do color correction, trim the video and make it look pro.

I just recently decided to upgrade my living room TV/media setup, and I’d really like to have some sort of computer doing everything a roku could do that’s also capable enough to stream games and such from my gaming PC in the other room via steam or parsec. My initial thought was to buy a NUC or something similar, but nothing really blew me away as being a great deal in that space. Right now, I’m between a ryzen 5000 series laptop (manufacturer or exact cpu doesn’t matter, just needs gig Ethernet at a minimum) or an M1 Mac mini; I’ve found laptops for around $650 that look alright, and (thanks to my dads service in the military) I could get a base model M1 mini for $550. I know both machines are likely a bit overpowered for this use case but I’m looking for something that’ll age well, so which would you recommend?
