Alternative to Asustor Flashstor + Video Idea
Benjamin2 posted a topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Dear all, i had the thought of using the BTC Mainboards which have a looot of PCI 1x Slots and use these with the PCIe 1x to M.2 Adapter Cards. The Mainboards are fairly cheap and the PCIe adapers have no addidtional chips on them which means that there is no additional powerdraw. overall it should be a lot cheaper then the Flashstor and more customizable. Example: ASRock H110 Pro BTC Mainboard ~50 Bucks + PCIe Adapter ~5 Bucks + Some Usefull CPU (Performance is the Weakness of the Asustor) + Some Ram Overall it should have some decent Powerdraw. What do you think about this approch? Regards Benjamin -
Hello! Introduction to the problem: This issue is not mine to solve but one I attempted to help my younger brother with and am now having issues with. I will include all the necessary info via a photo of his system info. I gifted my younger brother his first PC with what was my first starter build, his mother board is an ASRock B450m/ac, originally it only had 250gb ssd installed, this eventually became a problem for him as he's a gamer and is currently playing the new COD MW3, any players of the current COD games would know this game is extremely storage taxing and will take up most of the storage when all you have is 250gb to work with, I instructed him to buy a new ssd with at least 1T of storage if he wants to be able to play the games he is wishing to be able to play on the pc as COD was obviously not going to work error free when he was only allowed 5gb of storage when the game is fully downloaded. He was running out of storage during the gameplay thus causing the game to crash when it would reach its limit. He purchased a Crucial P3 1TB PCIe 3D NAND NVMe M.2 SSD (C1000P3SSD8) via my instruction and go ahead as I'd checked over and over with multiple sources whether or not it was compatible with his current motherboard and got a confirmation every time that it was indeed compatible. The problem: I instructed him to use his external hdd to install a windows 11 backup media so that he may reinstall it once the new M.2 was installed, which he did successfully. Once he'd removed and installed the new M.2 to his pc, and attempted to reboot, his PC will not boot into BIOS at all. He's tried every key possible, we've checked if it was installed correctly several times, we have been totally unsuccessful with every troubleshooter i was able to find, i've never had an issue such as this and am running out of options for support aside from taking the PC to get looked at by tech support at our local shops. If anyone could get back to me today/tonight about this solution i'd be very appreciative, as I was the one instructing him during this process and I dont want to scare him away from buying and installing his own PC parts in the future, thank you in advance! All system information provided in the attached Photo

so i installed an NVMESSD (WD Black SN850X) in my MSI B450 Tomahawk Max which does not support PCIE Gen4, i have installed the SSD correctly, my bios is up to date, the ssd is working but maybe after a day or two when i turn the pc on it does not show neither on windows nor on Bios, if i open and reattach the ssd it shows up again, i have checked with crystal disk info and even bios's built in m.2 checker, both shows that the SSD is new and no errors there, the other day i did not even have to open up the ssd and its back to showing, from bios i just changed storage to raid and turned it on to a blue screen and after reversing it to as it was the SSD was back and now my other sata storage devices were not showing in the bios, one of which contained window, but getting out of bios the pc booted up in windows and was showing all the devices including problematic SSD, do u think it is the issue of the motherboard? the SSD itself? or Bios?

Guys I'm panicking a little bit. I recently bought a 4tb m.2 to replace 2 old HDD's and 1 SSD Nvme drive. I installed it in the remaining bottom slot of my Mobo and disconnected the HDD's. I did all this with power off and plug disconnected from the PSU. When turning on the computer it goes in diagnostic mode and doesn't boot in Windows, I didn't change anything regarding my boot drive, it's still in the same slot and hasn't been touched. In the BIOS, my 4 Nvme's are all detected but I can't select them in the boot order. What should I do ? Did I brick my PC and lost my data ?

I am replacing an old nvme ssd with a newer, bigger one. It's my primary drive and among the softwares and other things I also have Windows (10) installed on it. I do not have any other M.2 ports on my motherboard and never moved an entire OS. What is the best way to perfectly clone the old SSD onto the new one? Are there specific tools? (soft and/or hardware) Any reccomendations?

Budget (including currency): n/a Country: us Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: n/a Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I will be getting the asus maximus dark hero for a new build but am confused about its memory restrictions. It says that if the m.2_1 position is in use it will knock down the pcie slot to x8 instead of x16. Then later in a different spot it doesn't specify that it's the m.2_1 position it just says m.2 is in use. I tried calling Asus and they were as confused as i am. Trying to get clarification on if I can plug in a gpu and put m.2s in the other slots and it will be fine or if I need to get a pcie storage. Plugging in a pcie won't cause the same issue they will both stay at x16 right? Does m.2 have the same position requirements like ram does? Cpu will be i9.13900k probably getting a 4090 gpu unless they announce something better within the next few months Thanks everyone for the help! I will make another forum with my full build once I'm done and put the link here. If you would like to see or double check it you're all welcome to!

Hello! First of all, I’ll try to make this as clear as possible, even though we’ll have to play with numbers and letters. I have in my possession; New Sabrent Rocket Gen 4 4x NVMe SSD SKHynix PCIe Gen 3 4x NVMe SSD LiteOn SATA M.2 SSD Gigabyte advertises the MB to support Gen 3 4x NVMe (and SATA) M.2 drives, and I tried all 3 of those drives, and NONE of them worked, or were even detected by the BIOS. But, interestingly, the SKHynix drive did somehow softlocked the BIOS, because the restart didn’t worked, nor Ctrl + Alt + Del, and that drive was getting boiling hot. Do note that I use ALL of the 6 SATA ports, (excluding SATA Express) but even with the SATA drives disconnected from the PSU, none of the M.2 drives worked. I also tried the Sabrent drive without the GPU, since it might take some PCIe lanes, nothing. Additional Info: CPU: i7-7700 GPU: RTX 2070 BIOS: F24

I just wondered if we can use an Optane through a M.2 to USB convertor.

My PC has been acting up in recent months, crashes in games like Cyberpunk and even Valorant, or when trying to stream a freindly tournament in our discord community, even after upgrading to a 4070, so I thought I would prepare for a completely clean, fresh Windows Install. My current install state is probably over 5 years old and has gone through some component upgrades, along with me probably not doing everything optimally so I'm guessing there is some buildup of buggy stuff. Hence i want to restart nice and clean. And i thought, if I'm at it anyway, why not upgrade to Win11, but the PC Health check is telling me that my system does not meet the requirements. AMD Ryzen 2600X Asus ROG Strix B450-F 32GB G.Skill 3200 CL16 Asus 4070 Tuf 2 HDD (1TB, 2TB) 1 Sata SSD (120GB) 1 M.2 SSD (1TB, current Win OS migrated/cloned from the 120GB a few years ago) 1 M.2 SSD (500GB used as a Linux Dualboot for college, will be replaced with a 4TB module to be my new games library as part of the reinstall) I upgraded the BIOS to version 5302 released Oct. 20 2023 as well as enabled the TPM module successfully, but for some reason I can't get the secure boot requirement to fullfill. If I enable UEFI/Legacy support in the BIOS and set everything to UEFI first, as sugegsted in Microsofts documentation, and enable the Windows Secure Boot settings, the health check application states incompatible as in the image above. If I disable the settings for the Compatibility Module, all possible Boot options (all drives mentioned above) disappear from the list, so I can't even boot into Windows to test the compatibility then. Is there a setting somewhere, that prevents my M.2 Drives from showing when I disable this setting, or have I istalled/formatted them in a way that requires the CSM? Would it even be possible to install Win11 fresh from an installation medium, if i for example formatted the drives differently? The Asus Website states that my motherboard is Win11 ready so I'm a bit at a loss.

My ssd is not showing up as a bootable drive, even though the motherboard has detected it. I have tried rebooting my computer, updating to the latest BIOS, but it didn’t fix the problem. Now it was identified as a bootable device when I went into the BIOS for the first and after updating the BIOS, but still couldn’t boot! This is my first computer built and the only desktop in my house. What do I do?

Hi everyone, I have some trouble with my fresh build, and it appears that the issue comes from my windows 11 installation (which is an upgraded windows 10). I'd like to wipe everything on my SSD (this is a single M.2) including windows 11 and previously installed windows 10 in order to do a fresh start with good'ol bootable flash, but as far as I searched, a lot of different ways to do this were proposed (and most of them were product placement for X or Y formatting software). I'm kind of new in this universe, so I don't exactly know how to proceed... any hints on how to do this without damaging the SSD? Thanks,

I constantly keep getting crashes whenever I try to run any games from my secondary M.2 drive. After the game crashes I then have to restart my PC for anything from that drive to open again. This issue originally started on a Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD 2TB NVMe M.2, I reset Windows in case it was being caused by a bad driver but no luck. I then thought the drive might just be bad and bought a SAMSUNG 990 PRO w/ Heatsink SSD 2TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 to replace it and still had the same issue. I tried testing both drives using Samsung Magician and found no issues. I tried moving the original 970 2TB drive to the main M.2 slot and had no issues with it, the issue appeared to only occur with the secondary M.2 slot. Not knowing what the issue could be I decided to take it to my local MicroCenter for a diagnosis. After about a month at MicroCenter, they came back and told me that the issue was with my motherboard (ASUS AMD AM4 ROG X570 Crosshair VIII Hero) and I need to replace it. Just wanting my computer working again I replaced it with a ASUS AMD ROG X570 Crosshair VIII Dark Hero. Even after replacing the motherboard I'm still having the same issue. When checking Event Viewer I see alot of the following after the game crashes: Event ID 140 The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: F:, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume5. Failure status: A device which does not exist was specified. Bus type: NVMe Event ID 51 An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk3\DR3 during a paging operation. My system specs are: MOBO: ASUS AMD AM4 ROG X570 Crosshair VIII Hero CPU: Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor 32GB RAM GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Main M.2: 970 EVO Plus SSD 2TB NVMe M.2 Secondary M.2: Samsung SSD 990 PRO with Heatsink 2TB Any help would be appreciated, really unsure of what to do at this point.

so i was sitting by the pc before work, all good and fine, stood up and got changing in work outfit, but then noticed my pc restarted and showed that ythere is no boot device detected, i thoght nothing special, i have had such thing happen, blue screen , pc restarts ,dosnet show any boot device, before today, to fix it, i just had to unplug pc for 10 sec and it fixed itself, but today i didnt fix like that. Well, i cant fix it, have reseated m.2, reaseated ram, gpu, nothing fixes it. Restarting problem started about half an year ago, when i upgraded gpu from nvidia to amd, did the ddu stuff, but after gpu change it strated to ac wierd , like rondom freezing(hjard reset required to fix), rondom blue screens. m.2 drive dosent show up in MB bios, after todays crash, it just shows: not detecetd drive is allmost 2 years old and used for OS and games storage, so did it die? I dont have any other pc to test if drive is dead or not, but i still have a warranty( my country has 2 year warranty on all eletronics). my system r5 3600 rx 6700 non-xt asrock b450m hdv r4 ( p4,90 bios), but its the oldest part in my pc, allmost 3 years 32gb kingston fury ram was win 11 on m.2 ssd adata sx6000 pro 1tb, now on my backup ssd kingston 240 gb its win 10 seagte 2tb hdd be quiet 600w semi modual psu

Yesterday I was trying to upgrade from a 1TB stick to a 4TB stick. This is only used as storage for games. Both old and new drives are gen 3 PCIe. I physically swapped the drives and went to boot up my PC and it wouldn't even get to Windows. I checked the boot drive and it was still set to my other SSD with Windows on it. I then removed the m.2 and was able to boot to Windows but only by recovering it. I then updated my BIOS and drivers thinking maybe it just doesn't know how to handshake or something, also doesn't hurt to make sure it's all up to date. Still didn't work and ended up with the same issue needing to recover Windows again. Now I am back to where I was with the old storage back in. Was able to recover Windows. Along with that came some strange issues where my "Audio service isn't running" (still trying to figure this out). It's also showing my user as an admin but when I try to do things it says it needs an admin? So, where did I go wrong? I thought it would just be super simple. Swap drives, format/partition the new one, and all set. But it did not go smoothly at all. I'm sorry for my poor english! So this year I bought a rx vega 56. I was in a hurry when buying it and I didn't give a thought about cooling and etc. My pc specs were CPU: Ryzen 7 2700x MOBO: Asus prime a320m-k Ram: 16gb ddr4 3200mhz cl 16 SSD: random samsung 512gb nvme m.2-2230 ( the m.2 slot on the mobo is right under the gpu) 700w aerocool psu So from February to June of this year, I had no problems with the pc. All games went smooth, no crashes, blue screens or random blackouts. I had done some overclocking to the RAM (3333 mhz at cl 17) and also GPU through AMD software-Adrenaline Edition and it was all good. After a period of 1 month ( i think) I started to have random blue screen once in a while, but nothing major. I thought that it was the Ram so I bought a second hand 32gb 3000mhz g-skill aegis in a rush. Problems were still current so I tried undervolting a bit and it didn't work so I went on and underclocked the card a LOT, reduced power usage and that was it. The gpu was causing the ssd to overheat. I bought another ssd (XPG GAMMIX S70 blade 1tb) with a passive heatsink on it and I put a fan blowing air to the ssd and still when I try to do smth graphics intense, the pc blackouts or just freezes and then blackouts. So I think it is a relatively easy fix by swapping out for a less power hungry GPU or a motherboard which has it m.2 slot not under the gpu. I will be very glad if someone suggests a workarround about this. I have attached the overclock and underclock settings for the RX vega 56. Thank you! rxvega56ocopt1.xml rxvegaverylowpower.xml

I just got a kingston NVMe ssd and put it into my laptop. It shows up in the bios just fine. But I can't find it on windows(11) file manager or on device manager, not even on disk manager. The SSD is a kingston snv2s1000g if that helps at all. Here are some pics of the bios and disk manager: Original NVMe SSD that came with the laptop. the kingston one: and the disk manager:

Before I got the heatsink for my M.2(Samsung 970 Evo Plus) I noticed in my HWiNFO64 there are 3 Temps for this drive and the third one is way off its temp than the two. My M.2 drive usually sits at 45-48c idle and about 53-55c max in usage, but that's Drive Temperature 1 and 2 only(what i've seen in the HWiNFO64), Temp 3 goes even further 79c! Also Samsung Magician only reads the "two" temps so it only reads me 45-48 also. I'm wondering what's this third Drive Temp is in the HWiNFO64 though as I soon got my heatsink it basically came down, almost the same temp with the two Drive temps and Idle goes way cooler now. Well for only 40-45c idle and max about 50c while the third Drive temp about 55c max. So What is this Third Drive Temperature? What part of the m.2 is it reading temperature? I'm just a curious cat

I wasn't quite able to figure out the relation between the pcies and generations and ssd speeds, im sorry. In the manual it says something completely indecypherable for me - ive included a screenshot. If I put it into the top m2 slot, given that im using ASUS PRIME X470-PRO, Ryzen 9 5900x and Samsung 980 Pro 2TB - is the SSD losing any speed? If so, how much? If I was to eventually buy a new mobo, what spec am i looking for? Thank you!

I want to replace the 2.5" HDD in my laptop with an M.2 NVMe SSD. I'm looking for a solution/product that would make plugging my SSD into a SATA 3.3 connector possible. I can't seem to find a suitable adapter. I found adapters that turn M.2 SATA into regular SATA. Also, I don't want to use it as external storage. Is this conversion even possible to do? If so, could you please help me?

I am looking at building a second pc to sell. I am on a tight budget so I found a cpu (i7 6700) with a motherboard. Now my cpu (i5 8500) is in a asus h310m-k which has no m.2 slots, now the motherboard coming with the new cpu (i7 6700) has 2. I want opinions on what I should do. Either swap out the motherboard and downgrade my cpu but increase storage capabilities, or keep my current setup with the limited storage capabilities, or anything that you can recommend. Everything else on the motherboard is the same E.g. ddr4 ram. Please help!

I have tried everything, but failed. In the bios of my asus laptop, it shows that there is an intel storage device with 512gb (my m.2) but doesn't show up in the boot section. I have tried everything I can, that is: Trying to format the drive with another external ssd with linux on it in every kind of setting, like ntfs and fat32 but none made the drive bootable. When I try to install windows it doesn't see any storage devices, even though linux did on the external ssd. It might be a bios error, but I also tried to reset the whole thing by updating it, it did not work. Please get back to me asap. Thanks.

My M.2 NVME SSD(s) are "freezing" with 100% active time in Task manager. This only happens when gaming, and only in graphically intensive games (3dmark does not cause this issue), sometimes the PC will reboot itself but 9/10 I have to shut it off via the power button. Control, Vampyr, Half-life Alyx all cause this issue. if the SSD that "freezes" is my secondary one I can use the system just fine unless I try to access any files on that SSD. If the C drive "freezes" than the whole OS freezes up but usually i can still move the cursor around. Temps on everything are good. It started happening within the last 2 weeks, but may have been longer before I noticed what the issue was. I have tried: fresh windows install removing and re-installing the SSD's Only using one SSD clearing the BIOS Updating the BIOS Updating all the drivers for the system Updating the SSD's firmware (there were no updates) Updating/downgrading graphics card driver setting PCIE to gen3 disabling C-states Checking the SSD's (chkdsk, smart, samsung magician, WD dashboard) Checking the OS (DISM) Swapping PSU Removing all USB devices (sans keyboard and mouse) Different m.2 slots SPECS OS: Win 11 PRO x64 22h2 CPU: Ryzen 5 5800x MOBO: Gigabyte X570 Master rev 1.2 GPU: Nvidia RTX 3090 founders PSU: Corsair H1200x RAM: G.skill Trident Royal 4000 cl14 SSD 1: WD Black SN850x (freezes) SSD 2: Samsung 970 evo (freezes) I'm at a complete loss as to how to fix this, I can say 2 months ago everything was running perfect. At this point I've already spent over 12 hours debugging and doubt a repair shop would want to mess with a custom water-cooled computer.
