  1. I was given an IBM X3650 M3. I am unable to get any operating system to work on it. I am now just trying to get windows 10 on it. I know that this is stupid and not using the machine to its full potential and thats ok. I get into the windows 10 installer but it does not recognize my drive. The sas backplane is hooked up to an LSI raid card. I have read that I need to load the drivers to a usb. When I do this and select the flash drive under load drivers in installation, it is unable to find any drivers. Please help. What am I doing wrong?
  2. Hi, my system is a Z370 platform using a i5-8600k with 32 gigs of ram. (this is an older photo) For storage I've been using a Samsung 970 Evo for my boot drive along with 6 other drives for storage and other stuff. The motherboard has only 6 physical sata data ports and I want to expand it with a SAS Card if possible. The IBM ServeRAID M1015 SAS/SATA Controller LSI SAS9220-8i seems like a good budget option for expansion. My only concern is that of compatibility, does my system have enough PCIE lanes for adding a SAS card? Also are there any other things I should keep in mind when trying to flash the SAS card into it mode? Thanks
  3. So I am building a home computer that will server many functions, but mostly storage, plex, and backup. Have it run on the M.2 and Have a Raid 6 for storage The Build Gigabyte B560M DS3H V2 10400T Processor Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4 DRAM 2666MHz C16 Hauppauge WinTV-quadHD PCI Express TV Tuner Card 1609 XPG SX8200 Pro 512GB 3D NAND NVMe Gen3x 4 PCIe M.2 2280 Solid State Drive (OS Drive) PERC H710P Raid Card Windows 10. So I put this together minus the TV and Raid card. Booted fine. Up and running. Added the TV card, No issue. Went to add the Raid card...issue. With the H710P installed, the computer will not boot. Just a beep, a restart, and a black screen. No bios, no H710P bios. Removed the H710P, and the computer will start after a bios statement of changing back to default settings. I tried the H710P (PCIe x8 I think) in another computer, and the H710p bios popped up like it should. I tried an old network card (PCIex1)I had laying around in the motherboard, and it worked. I do not have a PCIe x8 to test in the motherboard. I updated and installed all the drivers for the Motherboard from the Gigabyte website, except a preinstall sata/raid driver which confused me because this motherboard does not have onboard raid. After this Windows Update found an Intel PCIe driver to update, so I did that. I updated the motherboard bios to F4. I tried changing a few of the Bios settings before installing the H710P CSM Support: Enabled Storage Boot Option Control: Legacy Other PCI Devices: Legacy Tried installing the H710P with and without cables/drives. Same problem exists. Won't boot with the H710P installed. Works fine without it. I'm stumped...
  4. I've looked all over the internet without much luck so maybe someone here can help me. I've had a NetApp DS4246 that I've had for a few months now, which I acquired from a reputable source. It has two IOM6s installed. I recently bought an LSI 9207-8e from a different reputable source and it came configured with firmware version 20. I also have a QSFP+ (SFF-8436) to Mini SAS (SFF-8088) cable which I'm convinced is fine (for reasons I'll get into below). I currently only have two 12TB SATA HDDs. I've been pulling my hair out trying to get this to work with my system for days now. I'm running Windows 10 Pro, and switching to a different OS isn't an option unfortunately. The behavior has been super inconsistent and erratic. 99% of the time, when I connect the disk shelf, only one of the two drives are detected. The behavior switches up from time to time but tends to stay the same for at least some duration. For instance, for a while, every time I unplugged one drive and plugged it back in, that drive would become the detected one, and if the other drive was the one being detected previously, it'd disappear from the system (not just unmount, but it'd be gone from disk management too). Then for a while only one drive consistently would take priority and if the other drive was reconnected, it'd have no effect. I could constantly unplug and replug the connectors and every time only one drive would come up, but on extremely rare occasion, both drives would connect and mount properly, and during those times, I've tested reading and writing to both drives. I found someone online who claimed to have been using the same HBA with Windows 10 Pro without any issues, and was able to get in touch with them. Turns out they were using an older version of the firmware, so I tried flashing the same firmware in the hopes that it would resolve the issue. After a few reboots and reconnecting everything, I thought it worked for a bit, but turns out it was just another fluke and shortly afterwards it went back to only detecting one drive. I tested another version of the firmware as well, with no luck. At some point during all this, the HBA was checked in its BIOS as well and it is detecting both drives. After a while, I of course began to suspect the cable, but this was quickly ruled out. Every time I boot into Linux, both drives connect immediately, on every reconnect of the cable. If I'm in Windows and only one drive is being detected, and I don't touch the cable at all and reboot into Linux, both drives are there. Same the other way. I also installed MegaRAID on Windows and its able to see that two drives are present in the disk shelf, even though Disk Management doesn't show it. By now I didn't really know what else I could test, so I purchased a LSI 9200-8e from the same source I obtained the disk shelf from. They weren't sure why I was having issues with the 9207, but they told me that 9200s are all they ever use and that they work fine in Windows. In fact, they demonstrated this for me firsthand when I was at their warehouse the first time around when I purchased the disk shelf. However, when I installed it into my system, I immediately had the same issues that I had with the 9207. I tested both cards in different PCIe slots as well with no change. Out of desperation, I tested the cards in an entirely different system I had on hand as well, and they behave the same way there too. What the hell is going on? I know these cards can work in Windows. There's numerous reports of this online, and both of my sources tell me this should be working as well. Does ANYONE know what I can do at this point?
  5. Hey! I have a NAS with a PCIe 3.0 4x slot, and I'd like to expand the number of drives in it. My board has 12-SATA slots, and I'd like to get another 8 SATA slots internally and 2 eSATA. I only want software RAID as I'm running TrueNAS and ZFS. Any good recommendations? I'd prefer to avoid any Chinese cards and am find paying a reasonable price for LSi or another reputable card manufacturer.
  6. I'm messing around with some SAS HDDs I have lying around however some models won't initialize. (windows server 2022, right clicking the drive in disk management and clicking 'Initialize' results in 'The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.' drives are connected via a Supermicro backplane to an IBM M5110 (in IT Mode) (based off LSI 9207-8i). Drives that work: ST1000NM0023 ST2000NM0023 ST32000645SS Drives that don't work (there are multiple of each drive, it's highly unlikely it's an issue with dead drives): ST1000NM0001 ST3000NM0023 Weirdly 2 of the dozen or so ST31000424SS work fine but the others don't... The 1TB drives that don't initialize display as ~917GB, all the ones that do show as ~931GB... This lead me to believe it was a 520 Byte vs 512 Byte sector thing that I ran into before but googling it both drives show as 512 Byte sectors.... Any ideas? Edit: it might actually be the 520 vs 512 byte sectors, I guess the seller had them formatted as 520 byte. I'm reformatting one now to see if it works but it's going to take hours....
  7. Title is pretty much exactly that. I recently purchased an LSI 9207-8e, only to find out that it was improperly set up for use in a JBOD system, plus it has OLD firmware that I'd rather be upgraded. I made my efi boot medium, put the firmware and the BIOS in the USB, wiped the firmware of the card and tried to install the new Broadcom P20 firmware, only to be greeted by an error. NVDATA image does not match the controller revision. And it fails, endlessly. I've worked out that's because HP are asshats that can't be friendly to anyone and choose violence on a daily basis. Turns out that an HP rebranded card, even if it's the same physical hardware, will not accept anything that isn't an HP firmware update because reasons. Here's the current situation: 1. I have an HBA without firmware that's ready to accept firmware, no other problems. 2. Sas2flash will not flash Broadcom firmware to HP branded cards with release P15 or above. 3. Sas2flash will only ignore that it's an HP card and push the firmware anyway if it's the P14 release or earlier. 4. Broadcom never made a P14 release for UEFI as far as I can tell. 5. None of my hardware at home can support BIOS32 Service Directory (everything is UEFI), and thus sas2flash will not work on MS-DOS or FreeDOS, instead it will give me a PAL error. 6. I can't flash it via Windows without at least *some* firmware being in the card. 7. HPEs website is a labyrinth that doesn't appear to offer a full firmware file for me to flash. Essentially: I can flash it via DOS but I can't actually run the commands because my hardware isn't old enough. I can't flash it via UEFI since Broadcom didn't release an old enough version. I don't know what I'm doing wrong with Linux because nobody documents shit. Maybe HP has a firmware but I can't find it. Anyone got an idea on this? The Linux installer for this one just... doesn't work on Ubuntu 12.04 to 20.04, I'm defo doing something wrong but this is extremely poorly documented and I'm at a loss. Help appreciated.
  8. I have an LSI MegaRAID 9260-8i hardware RAID card in my machine and I want to add a backup battery so the cache RAM on the card is properly used. The documentation lists LSIiBBU07 and LSIiBBU08 as compatible; I think one mounts to a separate bracket and connects with a cable and the other goes directly on the RAID card, but which is which? I would much prefer the one that goes straight on the card.
  9. I have an LSI MegaRAID 9260-8i hardware RAID card running on an Asus PRIME x399-a motherboard. The RAID card works fine, but I can't access the firmware config utility to make any changes to its setup. I tried a previous suggestion to press Ctrl+H at the RAID card's prompt, then enter the motherboard's boot menu with F8 and select the RAID card, but this didn't work; it skipped straight ahead to load Windows. Is there any other way to get in?
  10. I'm building a new NAS/Plex server with 3 3TB SAS drives. I'm using SAS because its cheaper and I already had a blade that had a SAS interface. I have a HP Z220 workstation and the LSI 9265-8i RAID card, but when I try to boot up it doesn't open the LSI RAID BIOS, and no matter what I change in the HP BIOS it doesn't recognize the RAID card in the boot menu, and runs the normal boot sequence. I have tested the entire setup on my Ryzen 5 2600 system and my i5-2400 system and it works flawlessly with both of those, it recognizes the RAID card and initializes the SAS drives. Am I missing something dumb in the BIOS, or does it need an update? I have also gotten the HP Z220 workstation to boot to windows off of a SATA SSD plugged into the motherboard so its working, I just think that I have some sort of configuration wrong. I also don't see why the RAID card would be incompatible with the Z220 motherboard. Does anyone have any suggestions on why its not being recognized? Thank you for any help you can give! Specs for each system: Z220 - CPU: Xeon E3-1225 V2 3.2Ghz RAM: 8GB DDR3 i5 - CPU: i5-2400 Motherboard: ECS Z77H2-83 version 1.2 RAM 6GB DDR3 Ryzen - CPU: Ryzen 5 2600 Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 AORUS PRO WIFI RAM: 16GB DDR4
  11. Just got a lsi 9260 from ebay just to find out its a 9264 ?? whats the differences i cant find drivers for it or anything
  12. I have an lsi raid card that I was trying to flash into IT mode to use as an HBA card. During the flashing process my machine restarted. When I got back into the machine I tried to load the firmware on but now the card does not show up. Did I brick the card?
  13. Hello, Well I'm quite a starter speaking about virtualization. Still, I'm aiming high and I need to set up a workstation computer for having several virtualized environments. This is what I have: Asus Motherboard Z10PE-d16 WS 4 x 2TB Hitachi drives (planning on getting 2 more) And, I want to install VMware ESXI 6.5. The motherboard does support RAID but its software RAID, and that isn't going to work with ESXi. So I need a pretty good RAID card or a HBA one that can handle RAID configurations (RAID 1 for now at least), but I don't know what exactly should I get. I got from Linus's videos that a LSI 9260-8i may do it great. Still, I don't know if that's too overkill since I'm only planning to handle 6 x 2TB drives in the near feature. I do not discard the idea of getting an LSI 9260-8i, but maybe I won't need that full power for now and I want a price/technology/performance advice.
  14. I recently purchased an LSi 3081 SAS HBA/Raid card on ebay for like 30 bucks. I intend to use it with FreeNAS and ZFS and was wondering what were the steps to reflashing this card to IT/JBOD mode?
  15. I want to setup 4 1TB HDD in RAID 5. I have 2 ways of doing it. Either using Intel RST thats built-in to my ASRock Z270 Pro4, or use a LSI MegaRAID 9260-4i. I'm planning on using the array for general storage, mostly games. What kind of perfomance should i expect from either setup, pros and cons?
  16. Yo, its me again! So i can quite find the maximum capacity for a IBM BR10i raid controller. I found a post on Amazon it supports 2TB maximum but is this the case? Its in an IBM AC1 4769 Server system running RHEL 7.7 Thanks in advance.
  17. System: HP xw8600 Dual Xeon X5430 2.66GHz 28GBs DDR2 666Mhz FB-Dimm ECC ram GTX 710 (Basically a headless server) ROG 10G network card LSI SAS 9201-16e HBA 1x 250GB SSD (boot drive) 4X WD RE 4tb 4x 1tb Assorted drives 3x HGST 4tb Drives (trying to add) The system does see the LSI HBA I added but even in the BIOS config tool I don't see any drives. The HBA does show up under the SAS controller (which has a 2TB limit) I want it under SATA controller which I think is emulated on this board. I purchased a SFF-8088 to 4x Sata cable and it goes directly from the card to the drives. I read some things about this and something about Forward and reverse cables but nothing concrete. What is wrong??
  18. I am looking to build a NAS using Unraid to run Plex and a Windows 10 VM for Steam Link/In-home-streaming. I have a main gaming PC but my family wants to play games on their laptops/phones occasionally. Setting up a gaming VM seems like a good solution and/or fun project. The 2.5 drive cage will be added later on, once I need additional drive space. I have left storage drives left off the list because I plan to shuck external drives as they go on sale over time. My main questions are related to the LSI raid card. I have done a bit of research and it seems that this plays well with Unraid but I am new to this kind of hardware. Will the NH-U12 be enough cooling for the Ryzen 7 effectively? Also, is there a better value GPU besides the GT710? It will only be needed for the Unraid GUI so it doesn't need to be super powerful. 19. So, I have installed an LSI MegaRAID 9260-8i RAID Controller in a PC for a new build, and am experiencing extremely long boot times. Sometimes up to 15 minutes. I know this has to do with the RAID Card, If I remove it, Instant 3-4 second boot time. The RAID Controller is running 6x 10TB Seagate Barracuda PRO Drives Running in RAID 5. Does anybody know any way of decreasing the boot time, as it's getting really annoying, and I don't think our customer is going to be very happy with it. I have read somewhere about Flashing a non MPT BIOS onto the Card, but not sure if that is an option on this model. TIA
  20. Is there a way i can manage my LSI HBA RAID Controller from within windows server 2016 environment? (rebooting into BIOS is tedious and seems quite unnecessary to me just to add a hot spare or new drive configs (not removing existing arrays)....) I've looked up some stuff from broadcom (new parent company of LSI), but none of the programs or files i downloaded and tried to install appeared to do anything. i was thinking like someway to locally ssh or telnet in, but i have no idea how to flash a card from within windows without a working tool from a manufacturer. LSI SAS 9211-8i | https://www.starline.de/fileadmin/images/produkte/lsi/LSISAS92118i__ENG_.pdf | PS. I've also considered upgrading the firmware on the device, but i'm really skeptical of doing so since none of the current support info webpages actually list this exact card as compatable. (closest listed page on broadcom's site is the 9210 | > also.. how do i download a copy of the current firmware off the card? (since if the new version for w/e reason doesn't work, it's not available online anywhere i can find) | >> I have replied to this thread to find out how their upgrade went.. https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/779052-lsi-9211-8i-p20-firmware/ other thoughts: upgrading bios: data loss? (wouldn't see why it would, but can see it possible) Thanks.
  21. A friend of my suggested I come here and try posting. I have this older Engenio Class 4600 Model 0834 drive chassis. It's two power supplies, two drive I/F modules, and 16 fiber channel HDDs. The thing works, boots up, even can see some of the drives on the fiber channel connection to my workstation. However, I do not have the serial cable, nor any of the software. NetApp has rejected photographs of the device's tags and serial, refusing to help me in any way with software, documentation or support of any kind. So here I am, seeing if I can get any information. Anyone got documentation for this thing? Anyone know where I can buy the frickin' serial cable? Or possibly a pinout for it so I can construct one myself? It's a strange animal, seems to be a PS2-style round connector to plug into the drive I/F module, what on the other end I have no idea, hopefully 9-pin standard serial connector. Very much wanting to buy one of those so I can get into the thing. I've tried using nmap to hunt down it's IP address while connecting it to a isolated network, but sweeping 192.168.0.0/16 and 10.0.0.0/8 yielded no response. Anyone got one of these? Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this bad-boy up and running? I primarily want to get it going to use it to test a glut of fiber channel drives I have and want to resell, but i can't resell untested hardware, and this beast is the only fiber channel gear I have. Seems fiber channel is pretty obscure and hard to find anything related to it. I even tried pestering everyone who has one of these devices for sale on eBay. No one with a listing as of today (2-22-2018) has any information or the serial cable, all of them selling the chassis 'as is', no docs, no nothing. NetApp themselves is a dead-end, they refuse to help me, they are claiming it's not their gear and they have no record of the serial I provided (a photograph of the actual chassis and it's labels.)
  22. I used to use the 9260-8i on an Asus P6T motherboard and I could access the card's firmware config utility just fine, but now that I've moved it to an Asus PRIME X399-A I can no longer access the utility. The card and the RAID array on it still work, I just can't get into the firmware to change or clear any settings. Is there any way to get back access, or am I stuck? Access used to be by pressing Ctrl+H at the RAID card's boot messages which came after the motherboard boot page. The prompt still shows and the keypress seems to be acknowleged, but the config utility fails to come up and the PC goes through to Windows.
  23. So i'm building a server for a local company and i'm running into a issue with my storage configuration. I purchased a Z370 Professional Gaming i7 because it had a ton of IO ports and 10Gb Ethernet built in. I didn't read the manual first and found out if you enable a NVME drive it disables 2 Sata ports. So my problem is i have 2 NVME SSD's, 2 Sata HDD's, and 4 SATA SSD's and only 6 available Ports. My current config is the NVME drives in raid 1 as the OS and the HDD's on the 2 open intel Sata ports in raid 1 for archiving. So now i need to connect 4 SSD's in raid 5 but only have 2 sata ports controlled by a ASMedia controller. Also to be able to Raid NVME drives you need to have your systems storage oprom policy set to UEFI only. I have also looked into Hardware raid cards but there ins't much info on UEFI only raid cards. Any ideas on how to add a 4 SSD raid in a UEFI only config?
  24. Hello, Long time reader, first time poster. Last year i bought an LSI 9211-8i card off ebay and a good friend of mine helped me to re-flash the card into IT mode. The card currently has the 20.00.07.00-it firmware (which i believe is the latest?) Anyway, i started to use this card 3 months ago and it has been working flawlessly until 1½ week ago. A electrician was in my home and cut the power to the whole house when he was fixing in the living room. When i turned my PC back on the card started to act strange (although no other components did/does that) Occasionally all hdds connected to the card just disappears from windows and i have to reboot to be able to access them again. If im unlucky this message also shows upon loading the cards bios "unable to load avago technologies mpt bios". I have tried to switch the card into different pcie slots on my motherboard, but the result is still the same. I was able to avoid this problem for 5 straight days now, but was forced to reboot my machine today. Five hours after the reboot all drives just disappeared and i needed to reboot. One thing i have noticed is, when the card goes FUBAR and i shut down the computer, im forced to turn it off on the powerbutton on the case, otherwise its like card is still sending power to the drives (i can see that they got power through the hdd cage led). Does anyone have a solution to this? I doubt its windows (W7 x64) that's the problem since it can act strange on the BIOS level. Will it help to re-flash the card? I mean, it do have the latest FW afaik. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Mobo: Asus ROG STRIX X99 CPU: Intel 6800K GPU: EVGA 1080TI SC2 PSU: Corsair HX1000W
  25. I working on a clients Tyan server that was built for RiverBed and no ones claiming support. I need some help getting windows on this but its no allow windows to be installed. The problem i am having is that windows boots to the "loading windows files" and then it crashes, then reboots after loading them. I have tried to install windows on another machine and transfer that hard drive to it, when i do that it gets to the windows symbol and resets. Could anyone help me on this topic?
