Before the Internet was introduced to the public I maintained a BBS, in the 1980s-90s. We had "inter-BBS" message threads and as posts were added to them we would "toss" the new messages to other member BBSs. An example of this would be 'FIDONET'. We would have message topics that would actually span many years and in fact message threads would very rarely be closed or deleted for any reason. These days there seems to be some sort of taboo that makes posting to "old" threads some kind of bad thing and some administrators actually go through their message threads and lock them from further posting. As an administrator of a BBS for decades and a website operator I simply don't understand the logic. Information never gets old and in most cases neither do opinions. I believe that this mindset came about because when the internet was introduced there were so many "new" administrators who didn't have a lot of experience with such things and they either found themselves overwhelmed by so many messages or some of them just thought that "old" things are for discarding or throwing away and that must pertain to all of these tons of messages. I actually disagree with such a standard and feel that its kind of short sighted, can actually be detrimental and is contrary to the philosophy of having the internet and 'forums'. Is there an admin who could possibly explain to me just exactly why they believe that such a principal is necessary? And if you are an admin who proscribes to this way of doing things but never really knew why you did, would you be willing to consider changing your mind. There is information being posted on the internet today that will be relevant or at least of interest to people in a century or more. There really is no reason, that I can think of, that it becomes necessary to discourage users from posting to "older" message threads and because they are old really isn't what I would understand to be a valid consideration. Ultimately, of course, it is for the person who produced and maintains the website to decide and I certainly wouldn't argue against the freedom of choice to run your site as you see fit. It is my opinion and belief that discouraging people to utilize a message thread or forum for any reason is suppressing some of the deepest philosophical reasons that we have the internet, i.e.the free exchange of ideas and information. I just ordered a refurbished Galaxy S7 off Amazon, and since it hasn't shipped, I haven't been billed yet. I read in Linus' S8 review that the S8 locks to the carrier of the first SIM, and that he didn't appreciate this feature being 'carried over from the S7'. I did a little research, and found some sources saying this was the case with the S7, and that'll it'll lock to the carrier of the first SIM card I insert. Does the issue exist even when using a 'factory unlocked' phone? This is a complete deal-breaker for me, as I'm going to school in the US, but will need to switch my US SIM card with my original SIM from my home country every time I visit home. What exactly happens when you switch the SIM card out? Does it just not work? Do you have to factory reset the phone, losing all your data? I'd appreciate an answer.

I have Windows installed in a 120GB SSD and initially wanted to keep it like that. But there are some (older) programs where I can't change the installation path to my other HDD's. Is there any way to lock my Windows SSD for programs, but not for Windows updates and drivers and the necessary stuff?

So I have a razer blackwidow and naga plugged into my computer. They were both working fine with no issues however today there was a power cut, one that only lasted for a second but was enough to cause my computer to shut down. When I turned it back on I found that I couldn't move my mouse, first I assumed that the power cut had broken the mouse but then I booted into safe mode. Here the mouse worked fine, when I started synapse the cursor froze again. While doing this my keyboard has worked fine regardless of what is running. I stopped synapse from running at startup then uninstalled it and reinstalled it, this did nothing. I know that it is freezing the cursor in place because when I try and use something other mice it won't move either, team viewer and xpadder are also prevented from being able to move the mouse. I can only assume that an update was applied when the computer restarted but I don't have any system restore points to go back to. I was wondering if anyone knows of this issue or might have an idea of how to fix it, thanks.

i have never had this problem before but today both in gta v and BF4 like every 30 seconds everything just locks for half a second, it is really annoying. like i said, i have never had this problem before. Hey guys I built my PC about a year and a half ago and everything has been perfect, although it has been locking up right from the beginning. By locking up I literally mean that the PC does not respond to anything: Sounds stops Screen Frozen keyboard isn't registering (caps lock doesn't light up) My only choice is to reset the PC via the reset switch, now I have a very good feeling that this is a BIOS related issue with my motherboard (possibly faulty BIOS) but updating the BIOS is pretty risky so I don't want to risk it if its unnecessary. Specs: 650W (more than enough) Asus m5197 MOBO HIS Radeon 7770 GPU AMD FX-6300 CPU 8 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 Ram All case fans along with GPU and CPU heatsink fans continue spinning when this happens.

From yesterday my laptop keeps on locking up on me even if I`m not doing any thing and it`s so far been like every hour or so it lockes up.I have a alienware m17x r4 with the specs of: Gtx 680m, i7 3660QS, 16Gb of ram, What I have tried so far is: Do a system scan for viruses/Malwares, set my bios to default, do a system restore, If you find a way that might solve the problem please put in some instructions because I won`t understand what I have to do. I've been messing around with my new 750 Ti since I got it about 2 months ago and I play a lot of older less intensive games, so I don't even need the full cards performance. On some games I get 120+ FPS and I only have a 60hz monitor so those extra frames are just being wasted as more heat on the card that's unnecessary. I tried locking my fps on evga precision X and that seems to work, but the program has issues with windows 8.1 for me, but anyway for those who do lock your fps what seems to be the best method you found to do it?

TL:DR: In NZ no phones are locked, if we buy on contract we get a subsidy off of a phone dependent on the amount paid and term of the contract, prices are decent(ish) and the US should adopt this because they have no reason to lock phones, and there should be a law passed to make it illegal to lock phones, not illegal to unlock phones. Almost every week if not day, I hear people go on about how horrible the telco's treat people in the US. And by far the biggest issue is the locking of phones. I was watching an old episode of The Tek last night, where they were talking about making it illegal to unlock phones, and this sparked me to write a post, because I think that's the complete opposite thing to make law. You see, here in New Zealand many years ago, it was in fact going to become a law to make it illegal for Telco's to LOCK phones! As far as I'm aware such a law never actually went through, as just the threat of it made Telco's decide against the idea. Many years ago there were only really 2 networks, Telecom and Vodafone. Now these are still the 2 major networks, however many other networks, who were mostly focused on cheaper prices sprung up (2Degrees, and Skinny Mobile. Skinny are just telecom but offering cheaper prices to compete with 2Degrees under a different name). Anyway, continuing with the main point. Here in New Zealand, no one locks phones. Although it was thought by many that Vodafone locked phones, however what was really happening was just that Vodafone phones ran on different bands, and therefore often weren't supported on Telecom (and can still sometimes be the case). While we may not have super fast internet, or unlimited caps (internet here is a completely other topic, Imaging living with 30-60GB per month, with speeds of 5-10mbps... That's what most of NZers have), However I am proud to say that the way we do mobile here in New Zealand is where the Telco's in the US, Canada and wherever else should take note from! If you buy a phone in New Zealand from a NZ telco, it's unlocked. Period. So if only one network offers a phone for sale, you can still buy the phone from them, and use it on your favourite network. Either way that Telco has still made some money from you. Now most phones we buy (And every phone I buy and have bought) are bought at regular price, in other words the $649 you guys pay in the US for a contract free, unlocked phone, is what the majority of us pay. However a New iPhone, or latest GS4, or HTC one always costs about $1049NZD so about $870 USD (So stop complaining about the price in the US please, we would love that price!) Alternatively, you can sign up to numerous plans, each of which offers an amount of subsidy off of a phone. So say you want the iPhone, and you want to sign up to a 24 month plan, if you pay for a plan that's $60/Month (All prices in NZD) then you get say a $300 subsidy off the phone. If you want a phone as expensive as the iPhone for free, you're looking at about a $100-$150 plan (yes, we can get the phones for free!). (if you want actual examples of this, check out this webpage to see exact subsidies and prices and what you get in these plans The main thing to remember here is that not a single phone is locked, and really there is no reason for them to be. If you're signing up for a phone on a 24 month plan with a network anyway, the locked phone isn't keeping you on the network, the 24 month plan is. Which you can freely cancel at any time, although paying a hefty fee in the process! I realise that nowadays telcos will often happily unlock your phone once your term is up, but that begs the question of why do it in the first place? Furthermore, it's YOUR PHONE that YOU'VE PAID FOR, and with a contract, you've ended up paying far more for the phone than if you'd bought it unlocked, so why should they have the right to lock something you've bought and now own, to their own network? Also, with launches like the iPhone launch, where availability is so scarce, imagine how much easier it would be to get one when the only decision you'd have to make is the size and colour, unlike now where you need size, colour, network, etc. Making production and distribution harder. Finally, here in New Zealand, with every phone being unlocked, resale value is very high. I can sell my used iPhone 5 for between $700-$800 and spend the extra $250-$350 to upgrade to the new 5S. Although I have to wait quite a few months, because not only does it take a long time to launch here, but we get maybe 1000 phones for the entire country.... it's horrible. This is exactly what the US and everyone else should start doing! It's time to see the light and sort out their act. It's unfortunate that they're so powerful and can do whatever they want, not giving a damn about their customers and just doing everything for the sake of money and to piss people off. I hope this post was informative, and gives everyone out there an idea of what it's like outside of the US, and something to aim for. As everyone complains about the situation, but doesn't really offer any better suggestions or give any good examples. And if you're REALLY sick of the telco's, feel free to join Kim Dotcom over here in New Zealand, we'll welcome you with open arms (And a powhiri... Google / youtube it. hahaha)....
