Dear all, To give a bit of background, the only way to have cabled internet home is through a DSL cable. Unfortunately, the cable of the ISP is old which has a terrible uplink (about 2Mbps max, with a lot of lost packets). Thus a few years ago we moved to 2 4G routers, which has a way better internet connectivity, but limited to 150GB of data each, which is not a lot for 4 heavy users. So I was wondering if I could use some load balancing with one 4G routeur to have some decent internet at times, but also the VDSL connection for unlimited internet. However I would like to avoid having to use my ISP's modem for this, as it is really bad (in my opinion) and locks user's out to modify parameters. Proximus (the ISP) does provide some list of the whitelisted modems, but I would rather use some more prosumer equipement which are of course not whitelisted. Thereby my first question, why would other equipement not work with my ISP. The ISP uses PPPoE, so I would assume that other modems using that protocol should be fine? So assuming the modem part above works, most of them I found have a RJ45 port for WAN. However the DSL connection has an RJ11 port. Can I simply convert one to the other or is there some more processing involved in this? If yes, would modems be able to know/detect it only has 6 pins to use instead of 8? Bonus question, if any of you know any equipent who could be able to handle modem + router + load balancing, I would be interested. (Something from ubiquiti, netgear, ...) If this combination does not exist, I will look for the different elements apart. Thanks all for your time!

Hey all, Currently at home we're stuck with ATT 10/1 internet speeds and paying about 90 a month for it.. I know right? What we want to do is purchase a Verizon hotspot that is basically a wifi hotspot to a local cell tower to get around 15-20 down and 1-3 up. This will then be load balanced with either a PFSENSE or TP link solution to add up to a now redundant 35ish down and 5ish up. Thats still to be tested. How would I connect a wifi AP (Such as a ubiquiti AP) and hard line that to my WAN port on my router, thus making the verizon hotspot connected to my home WAN. Save me from ATT... SAVE ME. (Other ideas or solutions accepted)

Hello, I have two internet connections with a monthly quota of 500 GB and I am planning to setup a PFsense load balancer using these two connections. When the monthly Quota of the connection ends, the ISP throttle the connection to 64Kbps making it unusable. The problem that I'm facing is, if i setup a load balancer using these 2 connections with Pfsense and if one of the connections run out of its monthly data package, the users assigned with this connection would get terrible speeds. I would like to know if there's a feature in Pfsense to assign users after checking if the connection speed is at a certain level (atleast 1Mbps) and if it isnt I want it to be able to send it out of the faster WAN link. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Alright, So first off, I have 2 internet connections: 1. Rogers 25/5 (+/- 20 ms ping) with a usage limit of 100gb (with a $5/gb overage charge) 2. Xplornet 25/5 (700-1000 ms ping) with a soft usage limit of 100gb (After 100gb the speed throttles down, so there are no overage charges) I want to combine the two connections at the same time. I know the ping of the xplornet will be rough, but I can deal with it. But, I also have a work computer that needs to have a low ping (close to 20ms or so) for the work I do, so I am looking for a router that allows me to route the specific traffic of the work computer to always go through the rogers internet. I made a shitty flowchart to help illustrate my idea: And here's an example of what the traffic might look like for one month. |Rogers | Xplornet | Usage Total Work Laptop | 10gb | 0gb | 10gb Computer 1 | 37.5 gb | 42.5gb | 80 gb Computer 2 | 37.5 gb | 42.5gb | 80 gb Total | 85gb | 85gb | 170gb So you can see that the internet is split evenly between the two routers (85gb per router), but the router needs to keep it balanced as the work laptop uses extra internet. I am wondering if its possible to do this with a router, and also wondering which routers would be able to do this. I am proficient with Cisco, Aruba, and all of those enterprise routers, just wondering if any of them would actually support this type of thing. If you need anymore info, lmk Cheers.

Hi, Ive been using Pf-sense for a while but just recently got two internet connections and however want to load balance them a specific way. For perspective, I have one Fiber connection and one Cable connection. My cable connection is way faster in speed but the latency is high, and my fiber connection has a low latency but not a lot of speed. I was wondering if i can load balance by using the Fiber connection only and when the bandwidth usage hits a threshold start using the cable connection. i don't know if this is possible but i'm sure it is as PF-sense can do almost anything. Hi All! I'd like to ask if anyone can recommend a good free or very affordable software load balancer? I've just upgraded my mobile carrier's data-plan, so it has some pretty good LTE speeds. Now I plan to make the most bang for my buck by tethering my phone to my desktop whenever I'm at home. Right now, my desktop uses my home DSL connection via wired LAN. I was thinking of using a load balancer so I could merge both WAN connections into a single high-speed connection. The only one I've read anything noteworthy about is Speedify. Unfortunately, that's a bit expensive—at $19/mo. My current DSL costs $26/mo, and my mobile service is $40/mo. So adding $20 to that is a bit too much. What do you think? Does anyone have any recommendations?

Hi guys, I am going to make a lan party at my place with a few friends of mine in 3 weeks. Because of my slow internet 5mbit down 2 mbit up we were thinking about taking the LTE(4G) Router from a friend, where we have 30Mbit down and 20up. Hi! I currently have a pretty stable setup at home (not the best, I know) of having my DSL connection go through my ISP's provided modem+router+ap combo. So I connect most of my devices to that via WiFi, but I use a LAN/Ethernet cable to plug-in my desktop. Anyway, I'm currently contemplating the possibility of upgrading my mobile phone's data-plan and thought to get the most bang for my buck by using the data-plan from my phone's LTE connection in tandem with my DSL connection. So I looked it up and it's apparently possible via Load-balancing, which can be implemented via hardware or software. Given that the software solutions have recurring charges (I'm trying to stretch my spending, not add more!) and that my current network hardware is crap, I think hardware load-balancing would be best (time for an upgrade!). So my question is this: would it be possible? How would I go about plugging my phone to the router for it to load-balance alongside the incoming cable from the modem? And on top of that, does anyone have any suggested best-value routers (hopefully with built-in access-point capabilities) for this? My home is pretty basic, just 2 desktops connected via ethernet, around 5 mobile devices. No NAS (though I might add one eventually). What do you guys suggest?

So I decided to make a last minute decision and just rent a place near school. It's a big house with 8 people living in it in total. I am one of the furthest from the router, but I do gaming and streaming (to watch the WAN show etc.). I do not know the speed of the internet connection in the house, but I am hoping it's the top-tier (120 Mbps down/ 10Mbps up) since there's this many people living in the house. I have two options, but would prefer the cheaper of the two: a) buy an awesome wireless router (preferably AC - desktop and tablet use AC, my phone isn't desperate for internet access when I'm home) that I can share with my 7 roommates. I'm thinking a total of 20+ devices, but maybe a maximum of 10 active connections at any given moment. So which one? The Nighthawk X6 looks nice, because it's tri-band. But the WRT1900AC has a more powerful chipset. These kinds of routers will set me back about $300-350 after taxes. A second issue I might have are if people still connect to the wireless modem. Then the modem will control the load-balancing and treat the router as a single user. If my roommates would agree to just using the new router, I could turn off the radio on the modem, and possibly even get the cost of the router partially subsidized by them. I want to try this option first, as it's the cheaper of the two. Planning on visiting a big-box store with a generous return policy, try it out at the new place. Let my roommates connect to it, and see if they like it (and the connection is stable enough for me). If not, return it, and go with option B. b ) I'm a bit of a security nazi. I really like wired connections. Just pay for another modem just for my room. That'll cost me about $600-700 (to my ISP, after taxes where I get 55 Mbps down, just for the next 8 months) but then I don't have to worry about anyone hogging bandwidth etc. I also have a couple of NAS devices, so having a localized router in my locked room does bring extra piece of mind, but I also don't mind my roommates grabbing files from it from time-to-time.

I just got a 4G router and my internet speed has increased from 5 mb/s to 35 mb/s (download) and even the ping acceptable, all set to browse the dankest memes. My only problems are the occasional loss of connection or extreme drops in speed, these occur like at max once per day, but when they do they're at the most inconvenient times. I know about load balancing routers but my knowledge of networking is pretty basic, so i'm not even sure if this is the best solution and what to look for. As far as i've seen the TP-LINK TL-R470T+ should be a good solution for me. I could hook this up to the 4G router (Huawei E5186) and old ADSL line, and let it use the ADSL connection when the 4G speed drops below that of the ADSL. I think this will work for me, but I also want my wireless network to profit from the back up connection. Of course I could hookup a wireless acces point, but i'd prefer a load balancing router with wireless. So at the end my questions are: What is a good load balancing router with wireless, Or is there a better solution for my problem?
