  1. I was thinking about getting Manjaro XFCE for my low end laptop to game, but then saw some posts talking about it being buggy?!. I really do not mind how it looks or how easy it is to setup. I kinda like the long setup process anyway. If all I cared about was performance and stability, do you think I should go with Arch instead of Manjaro? If yes, is XFCE perfectly fine or should I mess around with i3 or KDE?
  2. I recently obtained an Acer N15Q9 Chromebook and started to play around with it. After finding ChromeOS to be a poor experience I decided to go through the whole ordeal to get Linux running on it. I used the tools and guides provided by mrchromebox to flash UEFI firmware to the device and proceeded to install Ubuntu 22.10. Everything works fine except when I try to playback audio. It will work fine for a while but then the audio playback will stop and the computed produces a harsh buzzing sound from the speakers. I believe it to be software related as video sources accompanying the audio, like a YouTube video, will stop playback and appear to buffer as this happens. The PC remains usable but until the audio source is killed the speakers continue to do this. I tried installing Ubuntu 22.04.1 as Ubuntu migrated to PipeWire in 22.10 but the issue is present there as well. Anybody got any ideas as to what could be going on?
  3. Put simply the biggest annoyance for me with pc gaming is steam updates. They don't happen automatically and since my pc is turned off except when I use it I have to wait for updates often. So If I had a linux VM with steam installed is it possible to make steam update games instantly? Then since steam transfers over LAN would it just pass It to my gaming pc? I have Gbit so the main slowdown is decompressing does steam transfer decompressed versions of the updates? Steam cache would be pointless since my internet speed is easily fast enough to saturate my ssd with decompression. My main goal is to get around decompression. this might sound like a none issue but if the only down side for me is some extra storage space used I don't see it as a waste. Any help appreciated!
  4. The previous version of Ubuntu 14 I released and posted about built for the Wii was very unstable. This one has an updated Kernel along with Wi-Fi Support now. For all the details and download please check out https://github.com/Wiibuntu/Ubuntu14-Wii but I will sum up some things here. About The Project: Trying to bring newer versions of Ubuntu to the Wii has been a project of mine for the last few months. Many trial and errors. This versions actually build somewhat off of Wii-Linux-NGX But this version uses the same bootloader with a different kernel, a newer one. And it also boots Ubuntu 14 instead of Debian 8. Kernel branch used was "Stable 3x". Originally used the "rebased-v3" Kernel but things where broken. Exact kernel is 3.14.14-wii. How to Install (Homebrew Needed!): In the download section you will find a .img file. That file will two partitions: a fat32 partition and a ext4 partition. The fat32 partition will contain the Linux loader for the Homebrew Channel. Just flash this image to an SD Card (2GB or more needed!) Other Wii Linux Versions: https://github.com/Wiibuntu/Xubuntu-9.04-Wii (Unsupported) https://github.com/Wiibuntu/Ubuntu-13.10-Wii (Active)
  5. So basically, I recovered a lot of files from an external HDD and now have around 250000 PNG files. And now the problem I am facing is that there are a lot of textures from Minecraft texture packs and Windows applications mix in because the recovery program didn't restore the folder structure. And now I am trying to find a tool to mass delete them when they have a certain size, e.g., 64x64 or 1024x1024. I'd prefer a Linux command line tool, but It's not so important. Thank you in advance.
  6. Ubuntu 13.10 Server For Nintendo Wii For detailed information please see the GitHub page https://github.com/Wiibuntu/Ubuntu-13.10-Wii About The Project: Trying to bring newer versions of Ubuntu to the Wii has been a project of mine for a while. Many trial and errors. This versions actually build somewhat off of Wii-Linux-NGX But this version uses the same bootloader with a different kernel, a newer one. And it also boots Ubuntu 13 instead of Debian 8. You have 2 Kernels to choose from via Gumboot. More info in "How To Boot" section of the GitHub page. Wi-Fi Config: Previous Unstable version of Ubuntu 14 for the Wii I released has a Wi-Fi Bug with the b43 Driver. This version DOES NOT have that bug. Wi-Fi Works. Its as simple as using the "whiite-ez-wifi-config" file located in "/home/ubuntu" and setting up for Wi-Fi! If that doesn't work please use the command "sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces" and add the ssid and passkey yourself.
  7. —-SKIP TO THE ANYWAY IF THIS IS IRRELEVENT—- Hello all, I’m sure this isn’t an uncommon question but what’s the most profitable software or service used to mine? just looking to make some passive income. My PCs are on 24/7 and all hardlined through my house. I doubt thru-put is relevant but my office has my modem, main pc, and an 8 port switch (the modem has 2 Ethernets, ports cannot be bonded/aggregated) then two lines coming up from the basement, one’s connected to my server for file transfer among other things and other to a 16 port switch. from that switch we hit the ten ethernets on my server - yes a real server, a 2U rack (U2?). Then it goes to my living room which has a 8 port switch. all of them are tp-link unmanaged switches, same model except the 16. That guy is weird because I can’t do anything with it, that is to say punching in the IP, I can’t access a login page or change anything (found manual online, Deff can’t) anyway here’s the specs, not including the handful of laptops that would probably be better off not mining, rather doing server stuff. Load balancing, ADDS, blah blah pc -5900x overclocked (sorta) to 4.3 steady, I won’t let it go higher cause yesterday my 1000w seasonic suddenly pooped outta nowhere as I was mining and doing stuff -asus/ROG crosshair viii WiFi (whatever’s on their site, x570 NOT the dark hero) -asus strix 4090 RTX OC 24g -PCI 1x to 16x, xfx quik amd 6600 8gb -xfx merc amd 6700 xt 12g -dell nvidia quadro 4000 rtx (Nicehash says dell, I dono, sure lol) ^these are in order as placed in the motherboard. Config can’t be changed as the cards are 2 slots wide except for the quadro, which has to stay on the bottom otherwise my headers aren’t accessable -4x Corsair vengeance (I think, I forget cause I bought diff ram due to the QVL) but I do know it’s 18cl, 3600mhz and 16 gig each putting us at 64 total. All we’re hand picked as I wanted nearly matching serials and most of all made in the same country -2x Samsung 980 pros, 1tb. Main drive is on the top slot, obviously. The other is used as a global spare for my RAID setup -8x Samsung uhm… 870s, 1tb each ^4 are on raid 10, 4 global spares including the NVMe. Hey, had data loss before, won’t happen again! -seasonic 1000w bronze whatever, that’s in the case (anyone wanna buy a 1500w platinum / Corsair? Hsx1500i, something look it up on their site. It’s the EU version, won’t get into why except apparently it’s more efficient) -another PSU, a “game max” 1050 bronze. The seasonic didn’t have enough ports for the 4090 AND the rest of the cards ^that config is well, pretty logical. Seasonic is powering the motherboard, 2 cpu headers and the 4090 the ”gamemax” is ONLY powering the other gpus, the riser, and the SSDs should also mention I’m not daisy chaining any power. So that little guy with 2x six pin plug? Just using one plug for each card NOT both the server has 394gb of ram? Something crazy, 24x dimms, all Samsung ram (I think) again same serials, close enough and all same country/year/date of manufacture. It’s Deff DDR4, forget the speed who cares 2x intel Xeon 6790s? I forget, long story. 2.4ghz, I beleice 8 cores and 16 threads each for sake of this post, won’t get into the storage as it’s irrelevant. 8x iscsi (right?) and a plethora of other drives via usb, I know there’s 6 sata SSDs in there. Plus I have a arourus (?) asus something or other that houses 4x Kingston furies (or rampages, whatever was the fastest) at 1tb. Yes, transfer speeds are bleeping crazy, a gb a second from the iSCSI raid setup yeah their all on raid, each drive aside from the usb 3 ones. Can’t lose data! ANYWAY Nicehash is pulling in about 4$ a day between the server, 4 GPUs and my cpu its all water cooled, overkill water cooled. Ain’t getting into that lol. I have a 500ml/dc5 pump, 1L “fish tank” with another dc5 just helping the top radiator circulate water. It’s using the drain plugs so it’s somewhat not in the loop. That’s connected to a 420mm by 60mm (yep) pulling air out with 3x thermal take 140s. Whatever the fastest fans are, 2000rpm. They’re like 80$ a pop, something crazy Custom water blocks for the motherboard, 4090 and 6700 couldn’t find any for the 6600 (really it don’t need it) or the quadro. THAT needs one, she’s a beast! so without the 4090 going I lose like 3$. Kinda strange cause before I had it, I swear I was pulling in 3$ or so just with the server/6700/6600/4000 ANYWAY to the point whats the most profitable service, don’t know too much about mining so apologies if I’m a dummy. Nicehash I’ve seen ads for so I went for it. I look on forums and ppl say use XMrig. Ok that’s fine and dandy but…. Don’t I need a service to manage my junk? Like my wallet, it deposits idk every 4 hours. if not, how do I step away from Nicehash assuming their taking a fee of some kind? should I sideload nicehashOS? Maybe Ubuntu or Kali (it’s lightweight that’s why I mention it). I’m assuming I can’t use virtual machines and have direct IO with my cards then as far as the overclocking goes (nice hash settings OR manually), which route to go? If I’m mining I won’t be using the pc at all, so that could serve as a reliable stress test. Leaving cpu where it is, I do anything more it’ll blow up as I’m at 86c then the “extra parameters” - what else can I do if anything to increase profits? If that isn’t related, what’s it for? Nicehash just says “go” and makes it foolproof, if I can utilize the extras, sure. Maybe a cheat sheet would help? oh and is there a cheat sheet as far as overclocking my cards go? Say overclock-cheating.com, look up my 4090 and bam, there’s a starting point? the quadro won’t get overclocked at all, at 100% load I’m at 86c, any more and it’s useless in hashing also any other relevant information or education would be great. I suck up knowledge like a sponge when it comes to IT stuff OH OH, as it’s setup now, pump, 2 360s (one 60mm), then my cpu motherboard block, the 420x60 on top, then a slim 120 (ran outta room lol), then 4090 to 6700 and pump inlet. ill be putting the pc back together today as it’s been an open case for months now. Don’t ask lol. I have a spare 140x60 I can put under the pump now that I took out the 1500w - too long for the radiator. Would it serve any benefit to go 4090 out, into the 140, out to the 6700 then into the pump? That 4090 kicks some heat, figure it couldn’t hurt. I’m using soft tubing and it would take maybe ten minutes to shove it in there. any knowledge/education would be awesome!!!!! whoop whoop, keep rockin peeps, thanks!!!
  8. Hi thanks for taking time helping me, it's very much appreciated. I'm getting an error message when I try to stream my videos (This client isn't compatible with the media and the server isn't sending a compatible media format). I think I know why but don't know how to fix. My media is on a second drive which I have set up to mount automatically. I'm guessing it can't find the media or it's a permissions issue. When I check the log it says: /run/media/fedora/Jellyfin/Jellyfin Server Media/tv shows/The long way down/Long Way Down (2).mp4: No such file or directory Full log: https://pastebin.com/embed_js/pqyGMw3D This is the guide I used to auto mount second drive: https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-to-per...ou-should/ I'm using Fedora 39 updated, Jellyfin 10.8.13 and I think I've installed the necessary codecs. # System Details Report --- ## Report details - **Date generated:** 2024-03-09 18:30:59 ## Hardware Information: - **Hardware Model:** Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. 9. Can anyone recommend me some free online books/tutorials for OS & kernel & system programming? Thanks in advance
  10. So I was looking for the best Desktop Environment for gaming and came across two different windowing systems. Which would be better performance wise and stability wise? I am gonna be gaming on it so I would appreciate if there is minimal screen tearing. Also what is the compositor? Should I disable it?
  11. I have a pretty old laptop with integrated graphics. Which would be the best linux distro that is focused on RAW PERFORMANCE. I do not care about looks, simplicity, ease of use, desktop environment, etc. Only pure performance. I know i sound like a newb but I have used debian based distros before but started questioning whether they were the right choice. Please recommend which distro and version would give me maximum performance for my hardware. I just want it to get the job done no compromises on fps.I really dont mind spending a little bit more time if it means that its more stable and even a bit better. Im not able to choose a single distro. I dont prefer changing desktop environments after installation due to conflicting packages so please recommend a distro. Thanks in advance.
  12. Hey, I recently resurrected my laptop from the dead with a motherboard replacement. I decided instead of installing Windows, I would try to give PopOS a proper run as a daily OS. I've been using Linux for several years as part of my web dev job so I'm certainly no noob in terms of Linux or PopOS. Everything is working perfectly fine except sound. For some reason no app or even the system will output to the internal speakers. The headphone jack works fine. I've been Googling for hours and tried many different things but no joy. I've installed the PulseAudio Volume Control app as suggested online. In the Output tab the Speakers show as unavailable. If I select them and then use the volume up and down it does output a little boop tone to indicate volume change. So, the speakers are definitely working. Using inxi -A command I can see that it is loading and using the snd_hda_intel driver. The actual audio chipset / model is Conexant CX20751/2. I've tried setting the model to generic, auto and ideapad within the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file but still nothing. The system always defaults to outputting to the headphone jack even though there's nothing connected to it. I'm really hoping there's something I can do to get the speakers working. It's a real pain and annoyance to not have any audio. I've attached screenshots showing the output of the above-mentioned apps and commands. Reading online apparently, it's to do with a change in Ubuntu where they switched from Pulseaudio to Pipewire? The laptop is a Lenovo IdeaPad 510 15ISK-80SR. It's fresh install of PopOS and fully up to date. Any ideas? I'm at a loss. Thanks Thomas
  13. Howdy good sirs! I've been looking at some previous posts on this forum and narrowed my choice down to Kubuntu or Nobara KDE. I am running Intel Integrated Graphics on a laptop with i5 6th generation CPU. I cannot for the life of me decide between these two. What do you all think is the superior Distibution in terms of stability and performance? Please suggest one! I need a third person's outlook on this matter. Thank you in advance.
  14. Hi! I'm looking for a way to host a fileserver, (preferably Nextcloud) a Jellyfin mediaserver and a Pterodactyl panel gameserver all on the same machine. I want to set up folders for each family member and one that everyone can access in the family for shared photos and files. Also, a media solution with an online panel for qbittorrent and a Jellyfin server that only has access to the downloaded films/series. On top of that a Pterodactyl panel (or something similar) where I can create and manage gameservers online. I'd like to run all of that on an SSD and 4x WD RED 2TB drives (with Raid z1 if possible). Running them on different servers isn't an option because I don't have the budget for that. I can scrap the gameserver idea if it isn't possible, however, I need to run a file server and a media server no matter what.
  15. Im on Nobara Linux KDE edition. I want to play Minecraft with MultiMC but their site only provides three download options: Deb, ARCH, and Binary tarball. How do I go about downloading MultiMC? Any help would be appreciated!
  16. Good day LTT, I have an issue with the home server I am trying to DIY. The original motherboard for this build (which had successfully booted into Ubuntu) got bricked; not sure how. I swapped the entire build over to a new motherboard (MSI PRO PRO B550-VC AM4 AMD B550). I was able to get into BIOS, see all my hardware, but when I try to boot, I am stuck on the MSI Pro Series splash screen. I have the Ubuntu Boot USB plugged in ready to reinstall the OS, but no action is being taken. I can get into BIOS, the boot priority is set properly, and I disabled XMP as a test. No lights are on in the diagnostic LEDs. Any idea what else I can try? The rest of the build is an AMD Ryzen 5600G (using integrated graphics), 32GB of Corsair DDR4, a Samsung M.2 970 Evo that the old OS was installed on, and 4 HDDs (2 WD 1TB blue drives and 2 WD 4TB red drives)
  17. i us the Sweet-Ambar-Blue-Dark-v40.tar.xz as my shell theme an my legacy app theme an kora for my folders an icons but i miss the native transparency of the Tokyonight Dark Borderless Gnome Shell Theme which i always wanted about 15% more transparent but could never figure out what lines an values in the config files to change to do so id like some help an advice if not just tell me which lines an values in what config file an where to change in the Sweet-Ambar-Blue-Dark-v40.tar.xz theme file to achieve this please this would be a great help to me an the look of my gnome desktop. id like it to look like this
  18. Hi there, I have been considering switching to dual booting Linux & Windows on my desktop. I was wondering if there is anything important I should know before going through with this. I plan on using full drives for each OS. Here is my planned setup: 2TB NVME SSD for windows (mostly because games take up so much space) 1TB SSD for Linux 2TB HDD That can be shared between the two. All of those drives above are connected via SATA with the NVME drive being the exception. My largest concern would be the shared HDD between the two. Will I still be able to access data on both operating systems without the need of reformatting? In addition, would I have to worry about windows screwing with my connected Linux SSD? To provide more context, I planned on using either Fedora or Ubuntu with either KDE or LXQT. I am not new to Linux because I use it all the time when working with my home server, however this will be my first time using it in a desktop context. If you have another suggested distro for this type of setup, please let me know. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  19. So after switching to linux, 1 of my monitors actually managed to work in 144Hz instead of 120 on windows, but the other one went from 360Hz to only 300, not that big of a difference, but i still would like to know why is that, and if there is a way to fix it? The model is MSI NXG253R (couldnt take screenshot with the dropdown menu open)
  20. I recently completed a build based on the ASUS Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI and an 7970X Threadripper. I am an Electrical Engineering grad student researcher and the computer lives on campus. Typically, if I am not on campus, I VPN in using my school provided laptop and run my actual code on the workstation. All of my machine learning stuff has to be run in Linux, but there are a couple programs that I use that are only offered on Windows, and I don't game much anymore but when I do it's definitely on Windows. Therefore, I am running a dual-boot setup on the workstation. My issue is that if I am not on campus I cannot reboot the computer into whichever OS I want. I know that the people have built/used Raspberry PI based KVM's to be able to reboot/control their workstations remotely. But does the ASUS Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI have some sort of similar functionality built in? I believe that ASUS offers an IPMI card that would allow this sort of functionality? If not, what are people doing in this scenario? Also before someone suggests it, I have tried WSL2 and the performance is not just quite there for training large ML models. I saw about a 20% performance hit and loading in the small sample data of my test program took about 50x as long.
  21. I just restarted my computer after trying to reinstall the Vulcan drivers for my GPU using [this tutorial](https://linuxconfig.org/install-and-test-vulkan-on-linux). When I booted I was greeted with a white screen that says `Oh no something has gone wrong`. I have already tried updating my system with `sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade` like [this topic](https://askubuntu.com/questions/1239025/after-upgrade-to-ubuntu-20-04-oh-no-something-went-wrong) said, but it hasn’t worked at all. As my PC boots up right before the error shows up, this text appears on the screen. ```none /dev/nvme0n1p2: recovering journal /dev/nvme0n1p2: clean, 730378/61022208 files, 119228208/244059136 blocks 5.465823] usb 3-3: 3:1: cannot get freq at ep 0x84 5.492013] usb 3-3: Failed to query (GET_INFO) UVC control 5 on unit 1: 0 (exp. 1) ```
  22. Linux users have been unable to under-volt NVidia GPUs since the Kepler days when NVidia removed that facility from the System Management Interface (SMI). In essence, under-volting allows you to run a higher clock frequency at a lower GPU core voltage and thus at a lower heat load making GPUs more efficient. The same effect can be had by lowering the power limit and adding a positive Clock Offset. The issue with this approach is when a Work Unit (WU) checkpoints, or something else occurs which reduces the GPU load for a longish interval, when returning to activity the offset tends to apply to an already fairly high clock frequency typically causing the WU to fail. However, there is an often over-looked switch for the NVidia SMI that can be used to prevent this from happening. -lgc --lock-gpu-clocks= Specifies <minGpuClock, maxGpuClock> clocks as a pair (e.g. 1500,1500) that defines the range of desired locked GPU clock speed in MHz. Setting this will supercede application clocks and take effect regardless if an app is running. Input can also be a singular desired clock value (e.g. <GpuClockValue>). So one could do something like: nvidia-smi -pm 1 nvidia-smi -i 0 -pl 160 nvidia-smi -i 0 -lgc 1830,1980 DISPLAY=:0 XAUTHORITY=/run/user/121/gdm/Xauthority nvidia-settings \ -a [gpu:0]/GPUFanControlState=1 \ -a [fan:0]/GPUTargetFanSpeed=75 \ -a [fan:1]/GPUTargetFanSpeed=75 \ -a [gpu:0]/GPUPowerMizerMode=1 \ -a [gpu:0]/GPUGraphicsClockOffsetAllPerformanceLevels=75 to: Set Persistence Mode for all GPUs (so power limits "stick" across WUs) Set the Power Limit for GPU0 to 160W Set the Minimum GPU Core Clock to 1830MHz and the Maximum to 1980MHz. Enable manual fan control Set both fans for a Turing or later GPU to 75% (Pascal and earlier only have 1 fan control register which controls both fans) Set GPU0 to "Prefer Maximum Performance" Add a +75MHz (5 x 15MHz Turing "bins") GPU Clock offset
  23. Some Backstory Over a month ago (I believe around Dec 1st) I was finally so fed up with Windows I forced myself to give Linux a proper try. I've been slowly customizing my Windows experience for years, starting with basic stuff and eventually creating full custom images with custom scripts, tools, even a hacked together updater. The problem with all of these is that it's a constant uphill battle. Between Edge being so deeply rooted in the OS to the point that certain programs/games will not work without Edge & it's webview and the constantly changing of basic elements like the inexplicable removal of the user folders from the This PC menu I finally just got fed up. Every Windows update feels like 1 step forward 3 steps back, that 1 step forward is what stopped me from just grabbing LTSC 2019 and calling it a day for another few years until Nvidia decides to stop letting their drivers work on 1809 (like they did with <1803). Anyway onto the actual experiences, enough hating on windows. The hardware I use a very weird selection of hardware. My main system is a few year old watercooled desktop-replacement style laptop (Clevo X170SM-G) while my main portable system is a 2022 Z13 (the 'surface for gamers') which I disable the dGPU in and don't really use for gaming xD I recently picked up a Zenbook Duo (basically the lowest spec one, 10510U, MX250) for cheap and have been using it more and more as my portable system because I really don't need the power of the Z13 all the time... The Clevo Because the Clevo is basically a desktop z490 system crammed into a laptop chassis it just works out of the box on Linux. The only real issue I had was I needed a way to control my radiator fan speed, this is handled by a micro-controller that sends a PWM signal based on the value passed to it over serial, fortunately this is a very similar process on Linux as it is with windows and after figuring out how to make a systemd service it works flawlessly, even better than windows which it tends to randomly stop working requiring me to open task scheduler and restart it. The fingerprint sensor on the Clevo is not supported under Linux. But that's pretty much the only piece of hardware that I have that flat out doesn't work. Having 3 monitors hooked up to a laptop only seems a little more buggy on Linux compared to windows, I do like how on Linux there is actually an option to align monitors by manually entering positions in the Nvidia X Server config panel as well as the ability to save display layouts. Compared to windows where I have to try and pixel perfect drag the preview around to make it mostly line up. I used FancyZones for window management on Windows and switched to using gSnap which took some getting used to (mainly the fact you can't rebind it to shift and you have to use ctrl (+alt to span multiple zones) but the functionality is very similar to FancyZones for my use. The Z13 Compared to the Clevo this is very much NOT a plug and play experience... Lets just get it out of the way, the fingerprint sensor is 'supported' but it functions as a swipe reader and is so inconsistent/slow it's basically useless. Suspend doesn't work. the SD reader is questionable (tbf it's also questionable on windows) and the XGm is it's own can of worms. But everything else just works on Debian/older linux kernels, the trackpad/keyboard have weird issues on anything 6.5+ The XGm is EXTREMELY finicky, I almost want to try the AMD based one and see if it's any better. There's a tool called supergfxctl by the asus-linux team that does allow it to work however it requires logging out and has a 50/50 chance of just not working from my experience, usually a reboot solves it but not always. Many hours have been wasted trying to change the hotplug mode, timeouts, etc to try and get it to work more reliably but nothing seems to help much. Back to the suspend issue, I've tried a bunch of stuff but ended up just giving up and using Hibernate or just shutting down entirely. Suspend just causes the screen to stay off or sometimes turn on but stay at just a black screen. The window changing lighting modes from the blinking red sleep thing to the solid colour so it does know it's supposed to wake up but something is broken with it. Now the biggest annoyance, the 10W power limit... So from my testing on any newer BIOS (>310 I believe) the cpu is stuck at <10W because of something to do with Intel DPTF/DTT. This is a firmware bug that I've reported to ASUS but they have 0 interest in fixing it because 'if the drivers [Intel DPTF/DTT] are working there is no issue'. Even after I explained that it was caused by a BIOS update.... After literal days of testing stuff the fix is just simply use BIOS 310. That fixes the issue entirely. Zenbook Duo Funny enough the Zenbook Duo I bought on a whim because it was cheap seems to be the best supported device, the only things that don't seem to work are NVMe and the SD reader, NVMe drives randomly disconnect after waking from sleep or unplugging/plugging in the charger and the microSD reader randomly stops working. Everything else works pretty much out of the box (you do need to install the asus-wmi-screenpad module to get brightness control for the second screen (which you want because by default it's quite dim) as well as a systemd service to set it to max brightness on boot). Suspend works fine, CPU turbos fine, touch between both screens does sometimes get confused for a sec when touching one screen, then jumping to the other but it's pretty quick to figure it out. I have my eyes on another cheap broken Zenbook Duo but this one is an OLED model, if I can snag it for cheap I'll try it out. If not I'll probably pick up a 1TB SATA M.2 SSD for ~$50 to use this one. I'm actually writing this on the Zenbook Duo \:P Distros I initially installed Debian 12 on both my Clevo and Z13 (this is before I got the Zenbook) and was honestly not that impressed with the preinstalled 'bloatware'. Even without the system utilities I still had to remove probably 3 dozen or so packages (why does gnome come with SO MANY preinstalled games...) but at least it was as easy as just uninstalling them from the Software menu I would like to not have to put in my password EVERY SINGLE TIME I uninstall one though (yes, I know you can remove them through the terminal, I did that later on). Also not impressed that parental controls and help can't be removed from the menu, requiring you to use the command line, it feels very windows like IMO. I did try out Arch (mainly to try and see if it helped with the issues on the Z13) and I very much see why it's for advanced users. Archinstall makes it quite easy to get setup honestly, just customize everything through the prompts and run a few commands to get a desktop environment installed and you're good* *except you aren't I never did resolve this weird fullscreen issue and a lot of characters were missing, basically anything not ASCII. Didn't really try to resolve the characters as it was low on the priority list compared to the fullscreen issue. I'm positive that with some tinkering and more knowledge someone could fix these issues but I ended up just jumping ship back to Debian. Desktop Environments I chose GNOME because of it's design and extension support, I am really not a fan of KDE Plasma's design. I'm sure it would be possible to theme it enough that I wouldn't mind it but I didn't bother. Basic theming on Linux is quite the endeavor (at least on GNOME). Something as simple as changing the accent colour of the Apps/UI requires modifying SVGs, finding and replacing half a dozen values in a CSS file, creating 2 other css override files and placing the theme is 3 separate places as well as running multiple terminal commands just to make sure it applies to native GTK3/4 + flatpak GTK3/4 apps as well as the shell. I did figure it out but it's a lot more complex than I was expecting. To be clear, I had to do a VERY similar thing on windows, requiring modification of the proprietary msstyles file and all the images within for the global dark theme as well as having services running that constantly applied the accent to other elements. I use quite a few GNOME extensions as well, some standouts are: App Hider (to hide a lot of the apps I keep installed but don't launch ever like Characters and Fonts) Notification Filter (to add a filter of .* regex, I HATE desktop notifications, killed the service on windows and disabling them in GNOME doesn't block the stupid 'x is ready' or screenshot notifications....) App Icons Taskbar (Basically moves the dock to the bar at the top all the time, I am not a fan of the amount of screen taken up by both the top bar and bottom dock nor do I like auto-hiding it so this is a perfect solution for me.) Software Most of the apps I used on windows are available on Linux as well: Librewolf (Firefox fork) - Native Linux version Vesktop (Vencord (Modified Discord) Desktop Client) - Native Linux version Freetube - Native Linux version KeepassXC - Native Linux version For the stuff that doesn't have a native Linux version: Winamp - Switched to Amberol which is FINALLY a basic music player that just works and actually looks good \:D RDP client - Using Remmina currently but looking for something less cluttered/complicated. GNOME's app has terrible colours which is a problem because I work through RDP VSCode - Honestly, I didn't even install the native linux version. GNOME's built in text editor + nano is good enough to not need it. Synctrayzor (Syncthing GUI) - Switched to Syncthing-GTK, pretty much the same functionality. Soulseek - Nicotine+ works well, I rarely use it. Just if I can't find the flac for a song via other means. Paint.net - I've been using GIMP but there's quite the learning curve, if anyone knows alternatives feel free to suggest them Video Trimming - I used the built in Photos app for this on Windows but I found this app on the GNOME Software store which is just a basic video trimmer and works great. I don't really use much software, some stuff I didn't mention because it's either such a basic app that GNOME has a version of it or it's popular enough that I didn't feel like it needed to be mentioned (i.e. Steam) Q & A Q: Why only Debian and Arch, why not Manjaro or Pop!_OS or even Ubuntu? A: Manjaro wasn't recommended by the asus-linux team and the main reason I tried Arch was because of their recommendation for the Z13. Plus I don't like pacman, the syntax is extremely convoluted. I use Ubuntu server and was already used to/like apt. Plus a lot of the software mentioned above is distributed as .deb files which makes it easier. As for Pop!_OS and Ubuntu, I don't really have a good reason. I tried Pop!_OS and used it for a short while but didn't really like they're spin on GNOME (and I think I had other issues but I don't remember) and for Ubuntu I didn't want to deal with native, flatpak, and snap. Plus again, I didn't really like their spin on GNOME either. Q: If you have so many issues with the Z13 on Linux why not just go back to windows on the Z13 and use Linux on everything else? A: I can't stand the idea of mixing Linux + windows on my daily systems, having to deal with that sounds like a headache trying to manage different software for each OS, hell I don't even want to run different distros on my systems because of having to remember which package manager/format to get on each machine... Q: Are you going back to windows? A: Hell no, I'm done with windows. It's to the point now where I'm happy with the experience and I have no real reason to switch back. I still use windows on a handful of machines (I have a tablet PC just for discord calls which runs a super stripped down version of windows, same with a PC that I use for playing YouTube videos via Freetube on my 'TV' (it's my old Acer Predator 43" monitor that got repurposed), both of these will probably run linux at some point when I get bored. I also have an old Precision M6700 running windows 7 (mainly for phone tinkering, all it really needs to do is run Odin/Some ancient leaked Qualcomm tools) as well as a VM on my main server for hosting game servers/discord bots/etc. that probably won't change too soon (I have a separate Linux VM which hosts the docker containers for most services). At some point I want to move that VM to Linux and merge it with the docker host but rn that's too much work. At work I still use windows as well as the VM I remote into runs windows because it needs to run the Microsoft Remote Desktop client to connect to our cloud PCs for work. This likely won't change.
  24. Hi there guys. I'm trying to build a new system for a friend of mine working as a web developer on Linux/PopOS. 1. Budget & Location Budget for this build will be around 1500€ (~1600$), we are located in France. 2. Aim The aim here is to upgrade a 6-year-old build that is starting to show its age. He currently has a 7700K and a 1050Ti with 32GB of RAM. No gaming, no video or photo editing, just coding/programming with a lot of open tabs, web browsing etc. 3. Monitors He has 2x 32" 4K monitors (LG 32UN500) 4. Peripherals No additional peripherals needed, he mostly uses Linux and switches back to Windows from time to time. 5. Why are you upgrading? He just wants to upgrade to something a little bit faster and snappier as he has started to notice some lags in his workflow. For the CPU, I was thinking about the Ryzen 9 5900X as it's getting quite cheap and seems like a good value for the money (370€). Mobo, a decent B550 board with wifi (maybe the MSI Gaming Edge Wifi if I can find one available). RAM will probably be 32/64GB DDR4 with a decent clock but maybe I need to consider the infinity fabric here ? Let me know. My biggest interrogation is with the GPU, I know a web dev doesn't really need one but since he's using 2x 4K monitors I was debating whether or not more VRAM could be beneficial (he currently has 4GB). I was thinking about the RTX 3060 12GB but it's sitting at 399€ currently which is way above MSRP. Let me know your thoughts on this ! Thanks !
  25. Hello! I'm looking for an external ssd I can stick linux on that is both rugged and portable enough to go on a keychain. I'm very willing (in fact I might prefer) a bring your own ssd and buy a case option. I'm just in so over my head I don't even know where to begin Thank you!
